Daniel James in talks over a new Swansea contract despite Leeds’ continued interest

[ad_pod ]

As reported by the Wales Online, Swansea star Daniel James is in talks with the club over a new contract, despite coming extremely close to joining Leeds on deadline day.

What’s the word, then?

The Welsh international travelled to Leeds on the final day of the winter transfer window, before the Swans pulled the plug on the deal at the 11th hour after problems arose regarding the £1.5m loan fee.

James will have just 12 months left on his current contract with Graham Potter’s side when the summer rolls around, which will place the Yorkshire outfit in an extremely strong negotiating position if they look to revisit their interest in the 21-year-old – this seems likely given the fact that James was, and is, Marcelo Bielsa’s number one target.

Check out the below above to see football played as you’ve never seen it before… in a maze!

The 5′ 7″ attacker was reportedly left reeling that a move to the promotion chasers collapsed so late on in the day, but does appear to be happy at Swansea after returning to the club. James said: “It’s been a tough few days with everything that’s gone on.

“But I’m back here now, I’ve trained and I really enjoyed it. I do love it here, the boys have welcomed me back and there were a few laughs and jokes.”

What are the chances of him signing a new contract?

Judging by the aforementioned statement, the chances of James renewing his deal with the Swans seems fairly likely.

However, it is worth noting that the attacking midfielder travelled to Leeds for a reason, and if Bielsa manages to guide his side into the Premier League, the Welshman could possibly want to see them come back in for his signature in the summer.

As a result of that, James could potentially delay any contract agreement until he finds out United’s fate, which, if that does happen, would leave Potter and Swansea in a difficult situation.

Opinion: Aden Flint is tailor-made for Tony Pulis

Tony Pulis has become something of a cult-hero in English football ever since he took Stoke City to the Premier League in 2008, with his style of football emerging as something of a benchmark for how managers should utilise squads of limited individual talent.

Whatever your standpoint is on Pulis, there is absolutely no question that his tried and tested methods are consistently effective. He will never inspire supporters to drool over his philosophy but you cannot argue with his results.

His style has been manufactured with one incredibly fundamental objective in mind: to win football matches. If three points are earned with a 1-0 win following a goalmouth scramble which sees the ball cannon off an opponent, onto the post and off the back of the keeper’s head before squirming over the line, then so be it.

It’s a question of what and not how; Pulis has built his career off making his side incredibly difficult to break down, and it’s those foundations which have made him something of a go-to manager for Premier League clubs hoping to beat the drop, and also for Championship clubs dreaming of promotion.

And that’s why he now finds himself at Middlesbrough this season. Boro are a side who are no strangers to relegation from the top-flight or promotion back to it, and with Pulis at the helm it seems they are in prime position to return in 2019.

That Boro have conceded just 8 goals in 17 Championship fixtures is a testament to Pulis’ expertise in constructing an unbreakable defensive unit, but every Pulis back-four needs a leader who commands from deep and embodies the spirit of his philosophy.

At this moment in time, that man is Aden Flint, Boro’s cunning summer signing from Bristol City. Flint showcased his never-say-die attitude in the Robins’ journey to the Carabao Cup semi-final last season with a series of valiant performances in central defence, and he has continued his fine form under a manager who simply adores players of his character.

Flint epitomises everything that is so successful about Pulis’ style: he relishes a physical battle, is an excellent defender at this level, willing to adapt and comfortable playing long-balls to ensure a quick transition from back to front.

Signed for a fee of just £7.2 million in the summer, Flint is already shaping up to be a genius signing and, if Boro ultimately clinch promotion to the top-flight this season, there is no doubt the quality of his performances will represent a core component of that achievement.

Missing out on Anwar El Ghazi could cost Leeds this season

Leeds started the season in incredible fashion as they blew away fellow promotion rivals Stoke City and Derby County but were held to a draw by a very strong Swansea City side.

Thanks to Oli McBurnie’s brace, Bielsa’s men were held to a 2-2 draw at the Liberty Stadium in what was a pulsating Championship game.

After getting through the first initial games of the season without making changes, Pontus Jansson has picked up a knock as has fellow centre-back Liam Cooper, who was forced to withdraw from the Swansea game during the warm-ups.

Although going forward the club haven’t picked up any injuries, with the intensive impetus put on pressing from the front, it’s unlikely that Leeds will be able to keep their attacker’s injury-free throughout the whole season.

Leeds had been linked with a move for Lille forward Anwar El Ghazi, but have lost out to Aston Villa in the race for the talented Ligue One forward.

The Breakdown

Since making his move to France, the Dutch winger has struggled to showcase the form he showed during his time with Ajax.

Valued at £4.5 million by Transfermarkt, the 23-year-old still has the potential to be a top player, and could’ve added some much-needed depth going forward for Leeds.

Bielsa has so far been able to rely on Pablo Hernandez and Ezgjan Alioski, but he could still do with some valuable back-ups to use over the course of the summer.

Team News & Predicted Starting XIs: Southampton vs Newcastle

Southampton and Newcastle will have the final say on the Premier League’s weekend action in Sunday’s 4pm kickoff and considering the two sides have conceded just 13 goals between them this season, it looks set to be something of a tactical chess match at St. Mary’s.But how will the plans of Mauricio Pellegrino and Rafa Benitez be affected by injuries? Football FanCast take a look at the likely starting XIs…

Southampton

With a clean bill of health following the international break Pellegrino looks set to stick with what is arguably his strongest starting XI, retaining the 4-2-3-1 formation Southampton have used exclusively thus far in the Premier League this season.

It didn’t achieve the right result last time out away at Stoke but there’s more than enough quality in the XI to turn what has been a somewhat disappointing start to the season around.

However, following the summer signing of Wesley Hoedt and amid Southampton’s recurring failure to create consistently, Pellegrino may opt for a new-look team with three at the back.

Up front is another point of contention; Shane Long is believed to have overcome the injury that saw him miss Ireland’s win over Wales on Monday night, but he may start on the bench as a precaution.

Newcastle

There’s a fair few question marks hanging over Newcastle ahead of Sunday’s game, not least including the availability of Jonjo Shelvey after breaking his finger trying to stop a fight between Jamaal Lascelles and Mo Diame.

That could see defensive midfielder Isaac Hayden return to the engine room alongside Mikel Merino – something that seems likely away from home in a game that will probably be decided by just one goal.

Aside from that, Christian Atsu and Matt Ritchie are both doubts, which would severely impact Newcastle’s options going forward, but are expected to travel to the south coast.

Ayoze Perez looks set to continue playing just behind in Joselu in attack, while Benitez will be reluctant to change a back four that performed so well against Liverpool.

Tottenham legend believes club could recoup £50m for flops this summer

Tottenham Hotspur legend and BT Sport pundit Glenn Hoddle says the club should look to recoup £50m of the money they spent on Vincent Janssen and Moussa Sissoko last summer at the end of the season after the duo have suffered disappointed campaigns.

Spurs bought Janssen for £17m from AZ Alkmaar in July to provide competition for Harry Kane but the striker has scored just five goals in 25 appearances in all competitions, and just one in the Premier League – from the penalty spot.

The 22-year-old was handed a rare start in the 4-0 win against Watford last weekend, but he missed a gilt-edged chance in the first half and was replaced by the returning Kane after the break.

Meanwhile, Sissoko was a £30m addition from Newcastle United but he has failed to produce the performances that he showed while playing for France at Euro 2016.

Even though he has made 29 outings in all competitions for Mauricio Pochettino’s side, most of those have been brief appearances from the substitutes’ bench.

Hoddle believes the north London outfit should look to cash in on the pair this summer and reinvest the money into the squad.

Speaking on BT Sport’s Premier League Tonight show, the 59-year-old said: “I just think £50million for Sissoko and Janssen, what could you do with that sort of money?

“Add to that squad [to improve].”

Tottenham will look to close the seven-point gap to Premier League leaders Chelsea when they host Bournemouth at White Hart Lane on Saturday, with the Blues facing Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Five last-minute signings Celtic should still target

After a shaky start at Celtic, Brendan Rodgers looks as though he is getting to grips with life at the Glasgow club. Losing 1-0 to Gibraltarian side Lincoln Red Imps was never going to go down well but since that embarrassment, the former Liverpool boss has guided the club back into the Champions League group stages and that, ultimately, is what the fans wanted.

They have a tough group, though – consisting of Barcelona, Manchester City and Borussia Monchengladbach – but you can bet Celtic Park will be rocking when those three roll into town, as Rodgers looks to navigate a route to the knockout stages.

Meanwhile in the league, it’s normal service. Three wins from three games see the Hoops top of the Scottish Premier League with a game in hand over their nearest rivals and their fans will be hoping it’s a sign of things to come.

Rodgers has been quick to get in players he feels can help improve the team, but there’s no doubt he’ll be busy until the deadline and here at Football FanCast we take a look at five players who could be on their way into Celtic Park before the deadline.

Cristian Gamboa

According to the Daily Record this one is very nearly done. The Costa Rica international has played very little for West Brom under Tony Pulis so is naturally going to be happy to move north of the border for a crack at first team football. Gamboa has bags of pace from defence and would be the ideal man to help Rodgers implement his pressing game at the Glasgow club.

Michel Vorm

Celtic were linked with the Tottenham number two earlier this month, and after his performance against Liverpool he’s surely only going to attract more interest. The Dutch stopper showed in the 1-1 draw at White Hart Lane last weekend that he is still a good keeper, he’s just unlucky to be stuck behind Hugo Lloris at Spurs. He must realise he’s good enough to nail down a first team spot elsewhere, and that could be with the Hoops.

Andre Wisdom

Andre Wisdom is a decent defender but just doesn’t seem to be able to force his way into the Reds first team. He’s spent loan spells at West Brom and Norwich in recent seasons, but now could be set for a move to Celtic. Rodgers knows him from his time at Liverpool and may feel that the Englishman would benefit from playing alongside the more experienced Kolo Toure.

James McCarthy

It looks as though McCarthy is going to find it hard going under Ronald Koeman. He’s been ousted from Everton’s midfield by new signing Idrissa Gueye and can’t get ahead of Gareth Barry so it might be time for a change of scenery. For Celtic, however, he wouldn’t be bad a signing at all. He can pass the ball well and isn’t scared of a battle, so watch this space.

Bastian Schweinsteiger

Brendan Rodgers has played down the speculation surrounding the World Cup winner moving to Glasgow. But that doesn’t always mean much when it comes to transfers, especially with Brendan Rodgers. Before Liverpool signed Mario Balotelli he said the club were not interested in the Italian’s services, but as we all know he became a Liverpool player a few days later. Don’t rule this one out just yet.

Jordan Nobbs is back! Women's Super League winners and losers as ex-Arsenal star marks Lionesses recall with Aston Villa hat-trick

On a dramatic weekend of action in the top flight, it was England stars who made the headlines in the majority of the key fixtures

Manchester City's hopes of securing Women's Champions League football – and maybe more – increased massively this weekend with a 2-1 win over Arsenal, whose own ambitions this season were hit hard by defeat.

That was the headline fixture in a reduced schedule of Women's Super League action, with only four games taking place. However, there was no less drama, with Saturday's clash of titans followed up with a big game in the relegation race as Leicester beat Liverpool.

Elsewhere, Manchester United needed some luck to beat Tottenham in a game that had everything, while Aston Villa hit struggling Brighton for six as Jordan Nobbs made a statement ahead of a potential return to England action.

So, who signed off for February's international break in style? And who will have plenty to ponder as the league pauses? GOAL takes a look at this weekend's winners and losers…

  • Getty

    WINNER: Manchester City

What a two weeks it's been for City.

Last week, Gareth Taylor's side beat Leicester in what was a tricky outing against a resurgent team. A day later, both Manchester United and Arsenal dropped points. The results threw City right back into the race for the Champions League – if not more.

That was consolidated with an absolutely massive win over Arsenal on Saturday, one which saw them leapfrog the Gunners into third place.

Taylor and his players haven't been shy in admitting their ambitions to win the title this season, despite being off the pace for large spells. Now, though, they're well in the mix.

The way City performed in this game was aided by a very sloppy opponent, but that shouldn't take away from how brilliant they were.

There's an argument that, with a front three of Chloe Kelly, Bunny Shaw and Lauren Hemp, they have the best attack in the league. With firepower like that, you can't write them off.

    LOSER: Arsenal's back three

Saturday was a tough day for Arsenal – but particularly the defence. The Gunners were extremely error-prone in dangerous areas, regularly giving the ball away in their own defensive third and causing their own problems.

"We’re not good in our possession. We lose the ball in really dangerous areas. We don’t use the ball well enough to sustain attacks," head coach Jonas Eidevall said afterwards. "This game here, it’s my responsibility."

For the first time under the Swede, Arsenal played a back three when they faced Man City in the cup on Wednesday. They were 1-0 winners in extra-time, but switched to a back four just after the hour.

Eidevall set-up his team that way to combat City's excellent wingers but, throughout the game, it was clear that his centre-backs didn't appear too comfortable in the unfamiliar formation.

Not only that, but it limited the influence a player such as Leah Williamson could have in possession, with the England captain more focused on keeping her shape instead of driving into midfield with the ball to start an attack.

Three days after that game, Arsenal started with a back three again this weekend and those same problems remained – but more came, too. As well as the mistakes on the ball, the space that Lauren Hemp and Chloe Kelly had out wide was incredible.

Ultimately, those two issues led to the two goals City scored. The Gunners pulled a goal back in the second half, after changing to a back four again mid-game, but they'd left themselves too much to do and couldn't get anything from the game.

Will that spell the end of the back three experiment? We'll see.

  • WINNER: Beth England

Things have been difficult for Spurs as of late, with defeat to Manchester United on Sunday afternoon their seventh successive loss in the league.

But despite the team's struggles, Beth England has been on fire since her January transfer from Chelsea. She netted her fourth goal for the club at the weekend – in just her fifth appearance – and what a goal it was.

A quick free-kick from Mana Iwabuchi inside her own half released England down the right, but she had it all to do still. With three United players back as she charged towards goal, the striker slowed up, cut inside of Maya Le Tissier and rifled a low shot into the far bottom corner, past Mary Earps.

It was a wonderful effort that continued a rich vein of form which will keep her well in the picture for England's Women's World Cup squad, even if she was not selected for the upcoming Arnold Clark Cup by Sarina Wiegman.

On the other hand, though, it illustrated how things have been for England since she joined the club – incredibly isolated.

If Spurs can get more players around her and create more chances, it'll only increase the likelihood of them staying up – while also improving England's chances of getting on the plane to Australia and New Zealand this summer.

    LOSER: Ella Toone

At several points on Sunday, it looked like United were going to drop points for the second successive week in the WSL, which would've been a significant setback in the race for Champions League football.

Fortunately for them, Leah Galton broke the deadlock after a frustrating hour and, after England's equaliser, they got lucky with a Molly Bartrip own goal that proved the difference between a disappointing draw and rising back to the top of the table.

However, the day wasn't without bad news for Marc Skinner's side. Shortly after going 2-1 up, Ella Toone was involved in an altercation with Spurs midfielder Eveliina Summanen that saw the England international raise her hands.

Whether it was a sending off or not is something that many will debate, but red was the colour of the card the referee brandished after Toone gave her a decision to make.

It means the creative midfielder will miss United's next three games – Durham in the FA Cup, bottom club Leicester at home and, crucially, Chelsea away.

There's no doubt that Toone – still a young player at 23 years old – will learn from this, but to lose such a key player for such a huge game is a massive blow for Skinner and his United team.

Garang Kuol: Newcastle's new Australian wonderkid tipped to become one of the world's best

The 18-year-old has agreed a move to the Premier League after shining for Central Coast Mariners, and could yet be involved in the 2022 World Cup.

Australian football is lacking a superstar.

The days of Harry Kewell, Mark Viduka and Tim Cahill being leading lights and global ambassadors for the country's national team are now long gone, and as they prepare for their fifth successive appearance at the World Cup finals, the Socceroos are crying out for a new hero.

And while it would be unfair to expect a teenager who is yet to start a professional match to step up to the mark, Garang Kuol is being touted as Australia's next big thing.

The 18-year-old thrust himself into the limelight with his performances in the A-League for Central Coast Mariners last season, and could now be set for a place on the plane to Qatar 2022 after earning his first international call-up in September.

He managed to back that up by agreeing a move to the Premier League just a couple of weeks later, and there is real excitement that Australia have found themselves a generational talent.

But who is Garang Kuol, and what makes him so special? Let NXGN explain…

Getty ImagesWhere it all began

Kuol was born in Egypt to Sudanese parents who had fled their war-torn home a few years earlier.

One of six brothers, Kuol and his family moved to Australia when he was aged six, and he and his older brother, Alou, soon began to learn about their new home's football history, watching highlights videos from the Socceroos' previous World Cup appearances.

"It was basically a mash-up, the key moments put into one tape – some of the goals and big moments," Kuol told the . “I can’t remember much about it, but I just remember players like [Mark] Bresciano, Tim Cahill and stuff.

"We used to watch that, legit, like every day, the same tape. It was one of the sickest things ever!”

While he would try replicate those goals in his garden, Kuol's formal footballing education began at semi-professional side Goulburn Valley Suns, for whom he was promoted to the senior side at just 15.

"Garang came onto the scene and the way he was tearing up these senior players, players that had just literally retired from the professional game, it was just phenomenal to see," Craig Carley, his coach at the time, told .

By 2019, he was following his brother Alou's path by being enrolled into the Central Coast Mariners academy.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesThe big break

With Alou having shone for the Mariners before leaving to join Stuttgart in 2021, much was expected of Garang when he appeared on the teamsheet for the first time in April 2022, named among the substitutes against Western United.

And though he did not make it onto the pitch that day, a week later it became clear that he could have an impact on the professional game.

He netted just five minutes after coming on for his league debut against the Wellington Phoenix, sparking a run that saw him score four goals in nine appearances to end the campaign, including a run of three goals in as many games to help the Mariners reach the play-offs.

"Garang, he's a special talent," his manager, Nick Montgomery, said. "When he comes off the bench, he just needs one chance. That shows what a talent he is."

Used exclusively as an impact substitute, Kuol averaged a goal every 47 minutes, and earned himself a place in the A-League All-Stars squad to face Barcelona in a post-season friendly.

Again a substitute, Kuol ended up grabbing all the headlines after a 30-minute cameo that left the Barca backline reeling.

The teenager twice came close to scoring an incredible solo goal in the second half, and certainly made an impact on Xavi as he watched from the touchline.

"It was a big surprise," the Barca boss said post-match. (He is) very fast, he created many chances and we conceded two or three chances because of him. So, a great player and a great future. He's a talent."

Getty ImagesHow it's going

After a quiet few months in pre-season, Kuol exploded back into the Australia's collective footballing consciousness in mid-September, when he became the youngest player since Kewell in 1996 to be called-up to the Socceroos squad.

His debut against New Zealand – naturally as a substitute – saw him become the sixth-youngest player to represent Australia, and with the World Cup now on the horizon, there is a real possibility of him being involved in Qatar as one of the youngest players in the whole tournament.

At the same time, reports emerged that Kuol was closing in on a move to Newcastle United, having previously been linked with the likes of Barcelona, Chelsea and Borussia Dortmund.

New Newcastle sporting director Dan Ashworth made a habit of plucking talented youngsters from lesser-known leagues during his time at Brighton, and his swoop for Kuol suggests a similar strategy will be implemented at St. James' Park.

Kuol completed his £300,000 ($336,000) move to the Premier League following his international exertions, and will officially be registered with the club at the start of the January transfer window.

Getty ImagesBiggest strengths

A two-footed attacker who can play either out wide or as a central striker, Kuol's main strength lies in his one-on-one ability, with his pace and close control making him a nightmare for defenders to stop.

That was illustrated perfectly against Barcelona, and though he did not find the net on that occasion, there is no question that his shooting ability is excellent for a player of his age.

As a youth, he would regularly cut in from the left-hand side onto his slightly-stronger right foot and fire off shots that were both powerful and accurate.

With elite clubs keen to find players who are dangerous in attacking transitions, Kuol profiles as the ideal forward player for the next generation.

SC rejects MCA, Maharashtra Cricket Association appeals

The Supreme Court has dismissed the appeals of the Mumbai Cricket Association and the Maharashtra Cricket Association against the Bombay High Court order that had ruled all IPL 2016 matches to be played in Maharashtra in May to be moved out

ESPNcricinfo staff27-Apr-2016The Supreme Court has dismissed the appeals of the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) and the Maharashtra Cricket Association against the Bombay High Court order that had ruled all IPL 2016 matches to be played in Maharashtra in May to be moved out of the state.”It is better to move out the matches in wake of the drought,” the Supreme Court order stated. The MCA and Maharashtra Cricket Associations had filed separate pleas in the Supreme Court last week, stating they would use only treated sewage water for the matches. “[Our contention] is that there is loss of revenue and diminishing of job opportunities,” MCA joint-secretary Unmesh Khanvilkar had told ESPNcricinfo. “We are challenging it on that [ground] only because we are ready to use [treated] sewage water for the matches. Even without the IPL, we use the water to maintain the grass.”The Bombay High Court’s ruling had come earlier this month after a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) questioned the hosting of IPL matches in Mumbai, Pune and Nagpur while severe drought persisted in Maharashtra. The court had sought an explanation from the BCCI and the state associations on why water should be “wasted” on hosting the games when the state faced one of its worst ever droughts. The court later allowed the opening match to be held as scheduled in Mumbai on April 9, and asked the Maharashtra state government and Mumbai’s civic body, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, to spell out their plans to tackle the problem of water shortage. The board had, in its response, stated its intention to use treated sewage water for ground preparation in Mumbai and Pune. Mumbai Indians and Rising Pune Supergiants, the franchises based in Maharashtra, had proposed to contribute INR 5 crore to the Maharashtra chief minister’s drought relief fund and supply 40 lakh litres of water to drought-hit areas at their own cost. The High Court, however, ruled that matches be shifted out. The verdict originally affected 13 matches, including the final which was to be held in Mumbai on May 29.The court later granted permission to conduct the match between Supergiants and Mumbai in Pune on May 1, after the BCCI had sought permission for the same citing logistical difficulties, due to a short turnaround time from the match between Supergiants and Gujarat Lions on April 29 at the same venue. Pune will miss out on five matches, including the Eliminator and the second Qualifier, while no games will be held in Nagpur.Mumbai had opted for Jaipur’s Sawai Mansingh Stadium as their alternative home venue, while Supergiants had listed Visakhapatnam as their alternative ground. Mumbai will play their last game at the Wankhede Stadium for IPL 2016 on April 28 against Kolkata Knight Riders, while Supergiants’ last match at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium will be on May 1, against Mumbai.
