Jayantha Dharmadasa set to be SLC president

Jayantha Dharmadasa is set to become the next Sri Lanka Cricket president, after SLC’s executive committee rejected all three original candidates, and named Dharmadasa the sole nominee for the position on Thursday

Andrew Fidel Fernando28-Mar-2013Jayantha Dharmadasa is set to become the next Sri Lanka Cricket president, after SLC’s executive committee rejected all three original candidates, and named Dharmadasa the sole nominee for the position on Thursday. He will run in the April 16 election uncontested, and if elected without incident, will hold the post for two years. He was SLC’s interim president from March 2005 to December 2007, and had expressed interest in contesting this year’s elections in February, but had opted out in the week before applications closed. He then renewed his expressions of interest after the possible complications with the other candidates appeared.MP Thilanga Sumathipala, current president Upali Dharmadasa, and Badureliya Sports Club president Sumith Perera have all had their nominations rejected for various reasons. Sumathipala had had his nomination rejected by the sports ministry earlier in the week due to business interests that were deemed to contravene the sports law.The nominations of Upali Dharmadasa, who is the brother of Jayantha, and Sumith Perera, were found to be in violation of SLC’s constitution, which states a supporting letter from the sports minister must be obtained if candidates for the presidency have not fulfilled specific criteria required of an SLC president. Among these criteria are the requirements that the president must have played first-class cricket, and that he must have sat on the SLC executive committee for at least two years. Upali Dharmadasa had not played first-class cricket, while Sumith Perera had never sat on the executive committee. Neither had obtained the supporting letter from the minister, and thus had their nominations rejected by the executive committee.Jayantha Dharmadasa did not play first-class cricket, nor had he sat on an executive committee, but he had earlier obtained the letter from the sports minister, before deciding not to contest the election, in February.Upali Dharmadasa, who sits on the current executive committee, said his brother was the only viable candidate to have put his name forward. “After my nomination and Mr Sumith Perera’s nomination was rejected, the executive committee decided to nominate Jayantha. He has got the special permission from the sports minister, so he will be appointed the president after the elections.”SLC’s constitution allows the executive committee to make its own nominations if no valid nominations have been received by SLC members.Jayantha Dharmadasa’s sole nomination effectively means uncontested candidates will be elected to the two most powerful positions in SLC for the second consecutive year. Current secretary Nishantha Ranatunga will run uncontested for his position in 2013, as he did in 2012, when Upali Dharmadasa was also elected president uncontested, amid claims of political interference. Last year’s board elections were the first in seven years, during which a series of interim committees administered cricket in the country.

A wet beginning in Port of Spain

The Caribbean T20 had an anti-climatic start as rain prevented a result in the opening fixture between Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago at Queen’s Park Oval. After T&T played their entire innings, Jamaica batted only 1.2 overs before the players had to go off. The teams earned two points each.T&T had found batting tough after they won the toss. They lost early wickets, were 39 for 3 and reached 50 only in 8.5 overs. Dwayne Bravo, who made 30, was the only batsman to score more than 20. T&T had progressed to 87 for 3 but then lost Denesh Ramdin and Bravo in the space of two runs, after which they slumped to 128 for 9 in 20 overs. Krishmar Santokie and David Bernard took two wickets each for Jamaica.Jamaica were 4 for 0 in their chase before the game was washed out.

Tim Paine to undergo neck surgery to repair pinched nerve

Australia’s Test captain is likely to be out of action until early November, giving him a month to prepare for the Ashes

ESPNcricinfo staff13-Sep-2021Australia Test captain Tim Paine faces a disrupted build-up to the Ashes after it was decided that he would undergo surgery on a pinched nerve in his neck, which has been causing problems for a considerable time. First reported in the , Paine will have the operation on Tuesday, after being unable to train at full intensity in recent weeks with rest not helping to ease the problem.A Cricket Australia statement said Paine had been suffering pain in his neck and left arm due to a bulging disc. He consulted a spinal surgeon in Hobart late last week, and it was recommended that he have the surgery to relieve the pressure on the nerve. It is hoped that he would be fit to return to action in early November, which would leave him a month to prepare for the first Test against England, which is currently scheduled to start on December 8 in Brisbane.Related

“The consensus of the spinal surgeon and the CA medical team was to have the surgery now which will allow plenty of time to fully prepare for the summer,” Paine said. “I expect to be able to restart physical activity by the end of this month and be back in full training in October. I will be ready to go by the first Test and am very much looking forward to what will be a huge summer.”It means Paine will be ruled out of Tasmania’s early Sheffield Shield matches. They are one of four states due to start their season later this month when they face Queensland. Beyond the opening two matches, the rest of the Sheffield Shield schedule remains uncertain due to Covid-19 disruptions. It appears that Paine could lose the chance to captain Australia on his home ground in Hobart at the end of November with the Test against Afghanistan now in serious doubt following Cricket Australia’s stance that they will cancel the match if women aren’t allowed to play sport under the Taliban’s rule in Afghanistan.Australia have only played four Tests in the last 18 months – all against India last season – with the tour of South Africa earlier this year postponed due to Covid-19 concerns. There remains uncertainty around the Ashes series with CA and the ECB continuing to work through the quarantine requirements for the England squad when they arrive into the country while there is the possibility that some players will opt out of the tour.

CSA refuses Bangladesh series

South Africa have declined a proposal from Bangladesh to play three ODIs and five Twenty20 matches in May. Cricket South Africa (CSA) met with the South African Cricketers’ Association (SACA) on Tuesday and they decided that the international schedule for 2012 would not allow for the series to take place.”As much as we would like to help another cricket country, it is not going to be possible,” Jacques Faul, CSA’s acting chief executive, told ESPNcricinfo. “With the volume of cricket to be played this year, sometimes rest is more important.”SACA had indicated on Monday that they would not support the idea of a series against Bangladesh because of the crowded calendar. On consultation with the medical and administrative staff of the national team, including team manager Mohammad Moosajee and coach Gary Kirsten, CSA felt the same way. “We agreed with SACA,” Faul said. “We have a big year ahead and our players are scattered over the IPL and county cricket, so we cannot play this series.”South Africa are due to play Zimbabwe in five Twenty20 practice matches in Harare between June 20 and 24, before heading to England for a tour of over two months. They will then play the World T20 in Sri Lanka and also travel to Australia in October-November, before hosting New Zealand at the end of the year. The Bangladesh board had approached CSA with the request last week, after their tour to Pakistan was postponed by a court order. Their August visit to Zimbabwe was also moved because of work being done to the pitches in Harare and Bulawayo. It left Bangladesh without any international cricket until the World Twenty20 in September. With the IPL only ending on May 27, South Africa would have had to play without some of their key players if the Bangladesh series was to take place. CSA decided it would not fit in with their plans to consider the series, which would have had to be played in South Africa. The Bangladesh summer is deemed too hot for cricket while South Africa would have struggled to find a venue as well, with the Highveld (Johannesburg and Pretoria) and Cape Town unable to host matches in winter.

Kaif, Saha tons revive Central, East

Wriddhiman Saha, back from a decent performance in the Adelaide Test against Australia, put East Zone in a strong position against North Zone with an unbeaten century in Delhi

ESPNcricinfo staff04-Feb-2012Wriddhiman Saha, back from a decent performance in the Adelaide Test against Australia, put East Zone in a strong position against North Zone with an unbeaten century in Delhi. East began with a 60-run stand between openers Dheeraj Jadhav and Manish Vardhan but soon found themselves in some trouble. Rajat Bhatia trapped Vardhan leg-before and Jadhav was bowled by Parvinder Awana in the next over. The score became 60 for 3 when Bhatia dismissed Natraj Behera for a duck. Saha and Ishank Jaggi then settled into a big partnership for the fourth wicket which ended only in the penultimate over of the day. The pair had put on 194 at a healthy rate when Jaggi fell to Harshal Patel for 86. Saha was batting on 100 with 12 boundaries as East finished on 258 for 4.Mohammad Kaif helped Central Zone recover with an unbeaten hundred against South Zone in Chennai. Central put in a disappointing performance after choosing to bat, with only No. 8 Piyush Chawla making more than 30 apart from Kaif. Abhimanyu Mithun bowled Naman Ojha for 9 in the ninth over, after which Central’s specialist batsmen were unable to build any partnership of note. When Robin Bist, the highest run-getter in the recent Ranji Trophy, was bowled by KP Appanna for 5, Central slipped to 90 for 4. Parvinder Singh and Jalaj Saxena managed starts but could not support Kaif for long. It was down to Chawla, who smashed eight boundaries in his 52 off 54 deliveries, to revive the stuttering innings. Stuart Binny limited the stand between Chawla and Kaif to 73 when he had the former caught by Robin Uthappa. Kaif remained unbeaten on 108 off 207 deliveries with Central ending on 292 for 8.

Australia look long-term for Ryan Harris

Ryan Harris, Australia’s preferred pace spearhead, has almost certainly played his last Test match for 2011, and will not return until he can get his injury-afflicted body fit enough to guarantee five days of strong bowling. One of the most problematic men among the quintet of players omitted from the Brisbane Tests, Harris, 32, is Australia’s best bowler when fit, but seemingly less likely to remain so with each match he plays. Pat Howard, the team performance manager, has decreed Harris must be brought to a point at which he is capable of performing for five days before he can resume with the team.At present, Howard indicated, two or three days of bowling and fielding is about the best Harris can manage. Currently convalescing after a hip/pelvis complaint, Harris is understood to have been placed on a longer-term fitness program over the next month, and is unlikely to be considered for the Hobart Test or the Boxing Day match against India. He is scheduled to return to bowling in Brisbane on Monday, but will not be rushed back.”The medical team are working particularly hard with a mandate to try to get him back to produce a really good five-day outcome,” Howard told ESPNcricinfo. “We know we could rush him back quickly and get him bowling for two or three days and that doesn’t really help him in the long-term or Australian cricket, so we’re really looking at how do we get Ryan back to play at his best for five days. We all know if we can get him back to that stage, then we’ve got a fantastic asset playing for Australia.”Harris bowled some outstanding spells to help Australia win a Test series in Sri Lanka, and was also among the wickets in the first Test against South Africa in Cape Town. However a hamstring strain kept him out of the third Test of the Sri Lanka series, and he missed the second in South Africa with a hip ailment. He is also managing a degenerative right knee. This combination of trouble spots means that Harris’ fitness can be a day-to-day proposition, and Howard is adamant the Test team led by Michael Clarke should not be second-guessing the fitness of any of its XI. To that end, Howard has suggested that last-minute or even match eve fitness tests may be consigned to the dustbin of history. The early decision to rule out five players from the Brisbane Test squad was a choice made out of consideration for the demands of the summer ahead, but also to ensure that fitness tests and the flying in of shadow players did not disrupt the assembly and preparation of the firs Test team.”What we’re trying not to do is wait until the last day to make a decision on an injured player,” Howard said. “We didn’t wait until 6pm the night before the Test to say Pat Cummins can’t play. We’ve said put in all the physio we can, be very active with that and medical services to get him back to 100%, rather than try to put him out at 80%, and we made that decision with a few of the players looking at we’ve got six Test matches here.”Cummins joined the Australia squad in Brisbane on day two of the first Test against New Zealand, as part of the team’s desire to more closely monitor the fitness and wellbeing of its cricketers. Howard said the team’s medical and fitness staff were being given a greater opportunity to work with the likes of Cummins and Shaun Marsh, also allowing the captain Michael Clarke to see and know precisely how his injured players are going.”Shaun Marsh has been with the team all week, Pat Cummins is coming up to visit, Ryan Harris has been in, Shane Watson’s been in, Mitchell Johnson flew back over [for surgery],” Howard said. “We do want to closely deal with that because that helps the selectors have a deeper squad, that helps the captain understand where his team is going for the next couple of Tests, the strength and conditioning guys monitor that re-entry into games. There is a closer co-ordination of that.”
