Sam Loxton dies aged 90

Sam Loxton, one of the last remaining members of Australia’s 1948 Invincibles, has died at the age of 90

Sam Loxton, one of the last remaining members of Australia’s 1948 Invincibles, has died at the age of 90. Loxton passed away overnight in Queensland, leaving Neil Harvey and Arthur Morris as the only surviving members of Don Bradman’s great 1948 side that toured England without losing a match.Prior to his death, Loxton was Australia’s oldest living Test cricketer, after another Invincible, Ron Hamence, died last year at the age of 94. An allrounder who played 12 Tests, Loxton had a fine first-class record but missed out on greater opportunities at international level due to the presence of the great allrounder Keith Miller. He scored a Test century in Johannesburg but it was as a member of the 1948 squad that he was best remembered, especially for his batting in Leeds, where his 93 in the first innings helped keep Australia in touch before Bradman and Arthur Morris chased down 404 in the second innings. In 22 first-class games on the tour, Loxton averaged 57.23 with the bat and 21.71 with the ball.”It was a magnificent side, not only the ability of the players, but the fact that with the exception of Neil Harvey, who was only a baby, the rest of the fellows in one way or another had served in the war,” Loxton, who served in a tank division, said in the book . “Some in actual theatres, like Miller in the air force and Lindsay [Hassett] in the desert, and so forth. There was a tremendous bond and there was a tremendous desire to play the game. It was breaking new ground.”When we finally got on the ship, I think we had the one and only team meeting of the tour… [Bradman] gathered us all together and put on a little tea and nuts and a few drinks and so forth and just spelled it out. I mean, he never mentioned the opposition. Nor really did he mention the task ahead, he just said that he hoped that we would all enjoy the tour and that success would come from within. There would be outside influences of course, the press and so forth, but that if we all played as a united team then success was sure to come. And it did, it did.”Being away for eight months we were paid 600 pounds, but quite frankly the tour was such a joy that I think if they’d paid the rent at home and given us a few bob for a few drinks we would have gone over there for nothing.”Loxton and Harvey became firm friends, the elder man often acting as an intermediary between the teenager and Bradman during the tour. Loxton also enjoyed a close relationship with Bradman, permitted to refer to the greatest batsman of all by such familiar terms as his middle name “George” or sometimes “the little bloke”.A middle-order batsman renowned for his hard hitting, Loxton took the same aggression to the bowling crease and collected 232 wickets in his first-class career. He captained Victoria in his final two seasons of first-class cricket, until his retirement after the 1957-58 season, but he stayed involved in the game in his later years. He served as Australia’s team manager for the 1959-60 tour of the subcontinent and was a national selector for a decade during the 1970s and 80s. Choosing teams alongside Bradman and Harvey, Loxton was involved in decisions such as the sacking of Bill Lawry during the 1970-71 Ashes series and also the selection of Dennis Lillee, who Bradman had not seen bowl, for his debut that same summer. His cricket administration career ended after the 1981 underarm delivery at the MCG when, visibly upset, he told Greg Chappell: “Greg, you might have won the match but you’ve lost a lot of friends.””I left the ground and drove back to Red Hill, on the Mornington Peninsula, where I lived,” Loxton said. “I was teary all the way. I wasn’t proud. It was a very sad occasion.”A true allrounder away from the game, Loxton also played 41 games in the VFL for St Kilda as a full-forward, finishing second in the club’s best-and-fairest in 1944 and once kicking eight goals in a game. One of his team-mates in that St Kilda side was Miller, who might have outshone Loxton as a cricketer but was on a more level pegging with him as a footballer.Loxton also served as a member of the Victorian parliament, holding the seat of Prahran for the Liberal Party from 1955 to 1979.In 2000, he was devastated at the death of his wife Jo and on the same day the passing of his son, who was taken by a shark in Fiji. Loxton lived alone on the Gold Coast after the death of his wife, and he continued to attend Test cricket and past-player functions, although in more recent years his eyesight had failed significantly.

Clarke to play role in selecting coach

Australia’s captain Michael Clarke will set many of the parameters for the selection of the national team’s new head coach

Daniel Brettig18-Oct-2011Australia’s captain Michael Clarke will set many of the parameters for the selection of the national team’s new head coach. The coach will be selected through a global search that will use the framework that brought the current Australian Football League premiership-winning coach to his job. While Cricket Australia trumpeted the use of Crank Sports, the Melbourne-based management consultants that have redefined the parameters by which Australian Rules coaches are chosen, it will be Clarke who has an enormous say in the choosing of the successful applicant.James Sutherland, the CA chief executive, said the relationship between the captain and the coach was arguably the most important professional bond in the game.”My personal views are the relationship between captain and coach are as important as any relationship in cricket,” Sutherland told ESPNcricinfo. “They need to be clear on their roles and responsibilities, and they need to have a real bond.”It will vary from team to team and personality to personality, in terms of how that relationship works, but in a successful cricket team there’s a strong bond between the captain and the coach and therefore Michael will be an important person as we look to set the framework and plan what the ideal characteristics and attributes are that we want from the coach.”This may well be a sign of great promise for Steve Rixon, currently Australia’s fielding coach, long-time mentor of Clarke’s, and formerly coach of New South Wales and New Zealand.Rixon’s time with New Zealand was particularly significant as he oversaw the growth of Stephen Fleming’s captaincy in a side that ultimately played well above its limited means. Two themes of the search for a coach will be the need for a candidate who can start swiftly, given that he is likely to be pitched into the job in mid-summer, but also someone with the vision required of the role.Under the recommendations of the Argus review, the head coach will devote much of his time to building a unified coaching vision in concert with the states, while also delegating the coaching of the national team to his assistants at times, namely for various ODI series. This part of the role grants the coach responsibilities in line with those of a coaching or technical director, far more than the national-team-specific commission of past coaches. Technical expertise will also be pivotal given that the new manager of team performance, Pat Howard, comes from a background rich in rugby but almost devoid of cricket.Steve Rixon is one of the candidates to be Australia’s next coach•Getty Images”We will be looking for someone who can evolve in this role,” Sutherland said. “Clearly, whoever comes in will need to hit the ground running as we go straight into a competitive phase, with a summer of six Test matches and the tri-series ahead.”Ultimately we want whoever comes in to be able to step up into that role as head coach, as is contemplated under the team performance review, so we’re looking for someone who can be more than just a coach of a cricket team.”The employment of Crank Sports has been arranged partly to speed up the selection process, given that Howard is yet to make a formal start to his tenure. However it was also done out of interest in the way the firm’s framework for appointments had formalised and structured a previously ad-hoc selection process for AFL coaches. Its merits were seen in the fortunes of the Geelong football club in 2011, when they shrugged off the loss of the long-term coach Mark Thompson and the most high-profile player in Gary Ablett to claim a third premiership in five years under the coaching of Chris Scott.”One of the things that attracted us to what Craig Mitchell is doing at Crank Sports in other sports, particularly AFL, is to really set a strong framework that gets you to objectively assess the individual candidates against that framework,” Sutherland said. “Inevitably there is a degree of subjectivity about it, but in the first instance we make sure we assess each candidate on a level playing field.”

Tottenham: Italian paper breaks big Barak transfer development

Italian newspaper Corriere di Verona have now shared a big transfer development out of Tottenham Hotspur involving target Antonin Barak, who they believe is the perfect fit for an Antonio Conte team.

The Lowdown: Conte eyes move…

As Spurs gear up for their highly-anticipated Premier League clash with Arsenal this evening, a make or break encounter which may well determine who is playing Champions League football, it appears transfer activity is still very much alive behind-the-scenes.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-newest-updates/” title=”Tottenham newest updates…” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Czech Republic international Barak, for example, has been of serious interest to Spurs according to reports in recent days.

Earlier this week, outlet Mondo Udinese.it shared news that Lilywhites head coach Conte is personally prepared to convince the attacker to join his side this summer in a ‘sensational deal’.

Now, in an update, it appears the Italian has now given his green-light for whole club to pursue a deal for Barak.

The Latest: Italian newspaper break Barak development…

As per Corriere di Verona (via Sport Witness), the former Chelsea coach has personally ‘asked’ Spurs to bid for the 27-year-old who is ‘tailor-made’ for his side.

This comes as Barak’s move away from the Marcantonio Bentegodi Stadium is ‘almost certain’ this summer, but the 6 foot 3 star’s club want around €25 million (£21m) and even hope to exceed that number.

The Verdict: Tailor-made indeed

Barak is perhaps one of the more underrated players in Serie A and we believe £21m would be a more-than fair asking price.

Lauded as ‘phenomenal’ for his international performances by members of the press, he has stood out as one of Hellas’ most crucial players – racking up 11 goals and four assists from midfield over 2021/2022.

Barak also stands out as their third-best star overall going by average match rating and is just about to enter his prime, potentially backing how he could be real value for money if Spurs were to advance with a bid.

Rangers: Campbell reacts to Lowry news

Jordan Campbell has been reacting to the news that Glasgow Rangers youngster Alex Lowry has been rewarded with a new contract at Ibrox.

The lowdown: Fending off suitors

The 18-year-old playmaker has signed a new deal with the Glasgow giants, having impressed in his four first-team outings to date.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst handed the teenager his debut against Stirling Albion in the Scottish Cup earlier this year and Lowry found the net after coming off the bench in a 4-0 victory.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/rangers-news-4/” title=”Rangers news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Since then, the Scotland youth international – who has been hailed by his former coach Graeme Murty for his “remarkable” self-confidence – has made his Premiership bow and been linked with the likes of Manchester City and Newcastle United.

The latest: Campbell reacts

Taking to Twitter upon the clubs’ confirmation of Lowry’s new contract, Campbell – who is Rangers correspondent for The Athletic – voiced his delight by saying:

“Excellent news for Rangers that they have tied down Alex Lowry on a new deal until 2025. At 18, he’s already shown he has bundles of ability. Should become a more regular presence next season. Important that top talents are retained until they can impact on the first team.”

The extension means that the Uddingston-born starlet will remain with the Gers for at least another three years.

The verdict: Spot on

Whilst the upcoming Europa League final is a sure sign of things moving in a positive direction under Van Bronckhorst following the sudden departure of Steven Gerrard in the autumn, being able to tie down players such as Lowry is a huge positive for the Teddy Bears.

Albeit only a small sample size, the five-cap Scotland under-19 ace has scored three times and provided two assists this season across all levels for Rangers, showing that he can frequently make a difference in the final third.

Furthermore, even tentative links with Premier League big-hitters such as Manchester City would suggest that the teenager is a prodigious talent and one to keep a very close eye on next season.

Wolves eye up Hirving Lozano move

Wolves are interested in signing Mexico and Napoli winger Hirving Lozano in the summer transfer window, according to a latest report.

The Lowdown: Lozano in-and-out at Napoli

The 26-year-old has found himself in and out of Napoli’s team this season, with injuries and illness holding him back at times but the wide man still managing to contribute.

Lozano has chipped in with four goals and assists apiece in Serie A, in just 16 starts, and he has helped them compete in a tense title race with AC Milan and Inter Milan.

The Mexican’s current deal doesn’t expire until the summer of 2024, but according to a fresh update, a move to Molineux could be on the cards.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/all-the-latest-from-wolves-3/” title=”All the latest from Wolves!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest: Wolves keen on move

According to Napoli Today [via Sport Witness], Wolves have been ‘following’ Lozano ‘for some time’, as they weigh up a potential summer move.

The idea of him staying pout at Napoli is ‘not entirely a foregone conclusion’, which further gives Wanderers hope of sealing an exciting signing.

[freshpress-poll id=“388780″]

The Verdict: Audacious swoop by Wanderers

Lozano has proven himself on the biggest stage of all, catching the eye for Mexico at the 2018 World Cup, registering one goal and assist each and standing out with his pace and directness.

For that reason, it is hugely exciting to see Wolves being linked with a move for him and he could be someone who takes their attacking game to the next level in the Premier League.

With Adama Traore likely to leave permanently this summer and Francisco Trincao expected to leave, too, Lozano could fill the void out wide, and much more, becoming the latest attacking hero at Molineux.

In other news, a journalist has dropped an exciting Wolves transfer claim. Read more here.

Leeds could strike gold with Edwards swoop

Leeds have recently been linked with a move for Arsenal youngster Khayon Edwards, who could follow in the footsteps of Sam Greenwood at Elland Road.

This forms part of The Transfer Tavern’s The Gossip series, where we analyse players based on praise and criticism from past and present.

The Lowdown: Leeds keen on Edwards

The Whites have recently been linked with a move for Edwards and are thought to be in the mix in the race to sign the teenage striker.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-41/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/cropped-2022-04-02T155252Z_391313781_UP1EI421841M9_RTRMADP_3_SOCCER-ENGLAND-LEE-SOU-REPORT.jpg” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Goal reported that Chelsea have made contact with the 18-year-old, with Arsenal experiencing difficulty in their attempts to secure the forward on a professional contract.

Edwards could therefore leave in a cut-price deal over the summer, with just a compensation fee possibly needed.

The Latest: Greenwood a favourite at Leeds

Victor Orta has previous of bringing a young Gunners striker to Yorkshire in Sam Greenwood, who put in an impressive cameo in Leeds’ 3-0 win over Watford on Saturday.

He appears to be a favourite under Jesse Marsch, who revealed after the victory that the 20-year-old has adapted to his ideas better than anyone.

The Verdict: Edwards to follow suit?

Edwards has been efficient in front of goal this season, contributing to 23 goals in just 22 games, scoring 17, most of which have come for Arsenal’s under-18s.

He is still awaiting a senior debut at the Emirates Stadium, so perhaps he could be interested in a move to Elland Road, especially after seeing the likes of Greenwood and Joe Gelhardt coming through at Leeds and now being viewed as first-team players.

The Gunners youngster has been labelled as a ‘wonderkid’ and ‘prolific’ by an Arsenal news Twitter account, so you can see why the Whites are plotting a move for him. However, they may have to be quick, especially after the Champions League holders made their move.

Antes, nós jogávamos no Maracanã. Infelizmente, aconteceu esse imprevisto. Contra o Madureira, não poderemos jogar lá. Nós estamos buscando (uma solução), mas teremos de jogar fora – afirmou.
