Victoria started the morning at 1 for 201 and by stumps they were 5 for 521, with Handscomb on 100 and Daniel Christian on 64, and their advantage over South Australia was 90 runs.Handscomb brought up his hundred in the final over of the day off Gary Putland and it continued a strong start to the summer for him – his Shield scores this season have been 108 not out, 96, 10 and now 100 not out. Christian will begin the fourth day hoping to become the third centurion in Victoria’s innings, after opener Chris Rogers began with 107.Rogers added only three to his overnight score before he was caught off the bowling of Joe Mennie, but his century should have erased any doubts over his place in the Test side ahead of the series against India. Mennie followed in his next over by having Cameron White caught and bowled for 8, but South Australia managed only two more wickets for the rest of the day.By stumps, six Victorians had scored made half-centuries or better, and Marcus Stoinis (90) and David Hussey (81) both missed out on the chance to turn theirs into hundreds. Stoinis fell to Putland and Hussey was caught behind off Mennie, who finished with 3 for 62, but at the close of play the Handscomb-Christian partnership was worth 139 and much work remained for the Redbacks.

Muralitharan joins Australia coaching staff

Australia have made a dramatic move in their attempts to improve their spin credentials in Asian conditions, hiring Muttiah Muralitharan as a coaching consultant for this year’s Test series against Pakistan in the UAE. And while Muralitharan has no intention of turning Nathan Lyon into a master of the doosra, he is already helping Lyon add a carrom ball to his arsenal. The two men have been working together in Sri Lanka this week and Muralitharan said he was confident Lyon would be ready to deliver the carrom ball to Pakistan’s batsmen in the Test series in October. But the appointment of Muralitharan for the short-term role is not only about helping Lyon but also equipping Australia’s batsmen to face Saeed Ajmal and the Pakistan spinners.Australia’s most recent Test tour in Asia was their disastrous campaign in India early last year, when they lost 4-0 and struggled to handle to R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja in turning conditions. The penetration of their own spinners was also a weakness throughout the tour, although it was not helped by Lyon being dropped mid-series and replaced by Glenn Maxwell and Xavier Doherty.Lyon returned for the final Test in Delhi and picked up nine wickets for the match, and since then has moved on to have 112 victims at 32.99 from his 33 Test appearances. Muralitharan said Lyon was clearly Australia’s best spin option and he expected him to be able to deliver the occasional carrom ball in the UAE this year before mastering it in years to come.”In a country like Australia, you don’t need many spinners, you need to get the right one,” Muralitharan said. “I think Nathan Lyon is the answer, for any format. He spins the ball, he is confident, he has done well and taken more than 100 wickets in Test cricket. Australia has to persevere with him and then fill the backups.”The doosra is very difficult to teach. We are trying something else, like a carrom ball … He is a finger-spinner, I am a wrist-spinner. For a wrist-spinner to change the wrist position is easy. But for a finger-spinner to change the wrist position to bowl the doosra is harder. So it would be difficult.”He’s already starting to bowl the carrom ball. So that is the easiest way for the finger-spinners to learn … I think he’ll be ready. He will bowl a few balls in the UAE and he will master it in years to come.”Muralitharan has been working not only with Lyon but also several of Australia’s emerging spinners in Sri Lanka this week, including James Muirhead and Clive Rose. But his role in the UAE will also include bowling to Australia’s batsmen in the nets in an attempt to get them accustomed to the style of Ajmal, who is the highest-ranked spinner on the ICC’s bowling rankings and will enjoy the conditions greatly.”I’m not a good batsman so I can’t give many tips to batsmen, but the thing I can do is that I’m still good enough to bowl to the batsmen,” Muralitharan said. “Myself and Ajmal are a little bit similar. We are bowling doosras and offspin, so they might learn from batting in the nets, rather than me trying to teach them. I can’t teach batting.”Muralitharan said he was confident he would have the support of the vast majority of Australian cricket fans despite his history with the country, which was dominated by his being no-balled for throwing in the 1995 Boxing Day Test in Melbourne. His relationship with Australia has improved significantly and he was one of the most popular overseas players in the BBL during his time with the Melbourne Renegades. His appointment has continued the push by coach Darren Lehmann to have specialists assist the team at strategic times, as when Shane Warne provided spin advice in South Africa this year.”Muttiah Muralitharan is a true great of the game and his involvement with the Australian team will bring enormous benefits,” Lehmann said. “He really understands the conditions we’ll face and will be able to impart a great amount of knowledge. Not only will he help guide our spinners during that tour, but he will also work with our batsmen to help them prepare to play Pakistan’s dangerous spin bowlers.”As we’ve shown in recent times we’ll bring in dedicated skill-specific coaching consultants to our support staff as and when we see fit. That means having more regular support from technical experts to help work on specific areas of performance.”Most recently we had Shane Warne join us in South Africa, and throughout the Australian summer we had a range of former Australian players around the team during the Test series to help impart specialist knowledge. This time around we are fortunate enough to have Muttiah work with us.”

Lou Vincent admits bookie approach

Lou Vincent, the former New Zealand batsman, has admitted to the tribunal investigating corruption in the Bangladesh Premier League that he was approached by an illegal bookmaker during the 2013 season. While a member of the tribunal said Vincent had pleaded guilty to not reporting the approach, the batsman said his mistake had ended there and he had rejected the offer.”I can confirm that I admitted a breach in January 2014 of the ICC code in failing to report an approach from a bookmaker whilst playing in the Bangladesh T20 league in January 2013,” Vincent said in a statement. “I confirm I rejected this approach at the time. There is no allegation or suggestion anything untoward occurred beyond the approach itself. I also express I have no involvement in any of the matches, or matters, involving the other parties, which were the subject of recent hearings and investigation in Bangladesh.”Vincent played eight matches for Khulna Royal Bengals in the 2013 BPL season. One of the three members on the BPL tribunal, Shakil Kasem, told AFP that Vincent had pleaded guilty to not reporting an illegal approach. He also said Bangladesh batsman Mohammad Ashraful, who had publicly admitted his involvement in corruption, and another unnamed international cricketer had also pleaded guilty.”We’re going to review their guilty pleas, deliberate on that and come up with sanctions within two weeks,” Kasem said.On February 26, the BPL tribunal released its findings and found only one owner of Dhaka Gladiators guilty of “being party to an effort to fix” a match in the league. Six others were found not guilty, but both the ICC and Bangladesh Cricket Board said they were “disappointed” by the outcome and may yet consider an appeal.Vincent’s involvement in an ACSU investigation had come to light in December 2013 when the reported that three former New Zealand cricketers were under scrutiny.

Resuming on 68, Rao powered on to a 277-ball 177, with 22 fours and two sixes, before his dismissal prompted Gujarat to declare at 479 for 8.Odisha began well in pursuit, with Girjia Rout putting on 111 with Natraj Behera for the first wicket before falling lbw to Jasprit Bumrah off the last ball of the day. Natraj, batting on 64 at stumps, remained on course for a fourth century in as many innings.

Vidarbha were 101 for 1 at stumps, still trailing by 231.In the morning, offspinner Akshay Wakhare completed a five-wicket haul as Jharkhand took 51.2 overs to crawl from their overnight score of 233 for 5 to 332 all out. After Wakhare dismissed Shahbaz Nadeem early in the day for 45, the tail provided stodgy support to Kumar Deobrat. Between them, Jharkhand’s last four scored 26 off 171 balls. Deobrat moved to a relatively breakneck 69 off 159, with seven fours and two sixes, before he was out to left-arm spinner Sumit Ruikar.Read the full report of Karnataka v Mumbai here: Lad revives Mumbai with half-century.Read the full report of the Delhi v Punjab here: Jiwanjot turns it around for Punjab.

Sivaramakrishnan elected to ICC panel

Laxman Sivaramakrishnan, the former India legspinner, is set to join Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara as a players’ representative on the ICC cricket committee, replacing the Federation of International Cricketers’ Associations (FICA) chief executive Tim May

Laxman Sivaramakrishnan, the former India legspinner, has joined Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara as a players’ representative on the ICC cricket committee, replacing the Federation of International Cricketers’ Associations (FICA) chief executive, Tim May*. Sivaramakrishnan, currently a commentator on Indian television, is learnt to have beaten May in a fiercely contested election that saw intense lobbying by both sides. The ICC confirmed Sivaramakrishnan’s appointment in a release on Monday, saying: “Sangakkara and Sivaramakrishnan were recently elected by a vote of the 10 Test captains, and will serve on the Cricket Committee for a three-year term from 2013-15.” Former England captain Andrew Strauss has replaced Ian Bishop as ‘Past Player representative’, the release said. “Strauss is one of the two Past Player representatives (replacing Ian Bishop), while Sivaramakrishnan is one of the two Current Player representatives (replacing Tim May). The other Current Player representative is former Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara, who has been on the committee since 2007.”Based on nominations received by it, the ICC board had proposed three names – those of Sangakkara, May and Sivaramakrishnan – for the two players’ representative positions. Sangakkara, sole current player, is expected to be elected unanimously while Sivaramakrishnan is believed to have received six of the ten votes in the other slot, for former players. The representatives are elected by the captains of the ten Test-playing countries, who cast their votes in a secret online ballot.Sivaramakrishnan had been backed by the BCCI, which, ESPNcricinfo has confirmed, contacted at least one other member country “requesting” support. He is also believed to have been backed by one more country, independent of the BCCI. Incidentally, though he has been elected as a players’ representative, India has no recognised players’ association.May, the former Australia offspinner, has been the public voice of players’ concerns globally since establishing FICA in 1998. He was, however, handicapped by the fact that FICA is recognised by only five Full Members of the ICC: Australia, England, New Zealand, South Africa and West Indies, the first four of whom are understood to have supported his nomination.Apart from FICA’s limited global influence, one factor that is believed to have gone against May was his sustained criticism of the running of Twenty20 tournaments including the IPL, Sri Lankan Premier League and the Bangladesh Premier League. It is believed that this won him few friends on the Asian boards.Tony Irish, the chief executive of the South African players association, criticised the BCCI’s interventionist approach to the election process. “It’s a sad day for the governance of cricket when players aren’t allowed to freely elect their representatives,” Irish was quoted as saying. “Cricket is a global game and the decisions that are made should be global decisions for the benefit of the global game, not for the benefit of one country, whichever country that is.”However, a member of a board that voted for Sivaramakrishnan contested that view. “It is disingenuous for FICA or its supporters to protest because in an election, candidates canvas votes and FICA did the same thing on Tim May’s behalf. The fact is that May didn’t have the support of many captains and that showed in the votes. Suggestions that May had the support of nine captains to start with are completely baseless.”The ICC cricket committee is a leading decision-maker for the game’s governing body in on-field matters, including playing conditions such as the use of the DRS to review umpiring decisions. It is headed by Anil Kumble, the former Indian captain, and includes Andrew Strauss and Mark Taylor (past players), Gary Kirsten (Full Member team coach representative), David White (Member board representative), Steve Davis (umpires’ representative), Ranjan Madugalle (match referees’ representative), John Stephenson (MCC representative), David Kendix (statistician), Trent Johnston (Associate representative), Ravi Shastri (media representative) and Clare Connor (women’s representative).*06.10GMT, May 6: The article has been updated after the ICC confirmed the appointments
