Newcastle fans react to Craig Hope takeover update

Newcastle United fans have been reacting to the latest takeover news on social media as the Daily Mail’s Craig Hope provided a fresh update.

He claims that the Premier League is set to revamp their directors and owners test in light of the moral, political and legal difficulties presented by the Saudi-backed proposed takeover of the Magpies.

The Greatest Bargains in Premier League history – How much did they cost?

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

However, Hope also suggests that a decision could extend into next week but the deal is still likely to be approved due to current limitations over the test.

It’s been over a month since reports first emerged and the longer it takes to complete, the more some supporters are beginning to doubt it even happening.

Saudi Arabia’s involvement has come with controversy and opposition, but many at St James’ Park are merely desperate to see someone else in charge of the club – they can only dream of Mike Ashley leaving after a torrid 13 years at the helm.

Newcastle have suffered mediocrity for far too long and this prospective deal could bring them a new lease of life.

Queens Park Rangers: Lee Hoos left "absolutely appalled" by decision to resume Championship on 20 June

QPR chief executive Lee Hoos has not minced his words in reacting to the EFL’s decision to resume the Championship season on 20 June.

The EFL announced on Sunday evening that its highest division would resume later this month, subject to all safety guidelines being met, with hopes of playing the Championship play-off final in the last week of July. [via Sky Sports]

News of the English second tier’s planned restart comes just days after the Premier League announced that top-flight action is set to return on 17 June, but Hoops CEO Hoos is far from pleased with the EFL’s decision.

Giving his reaction to the club’s official website qpr.co.uk, he said: “I am absolutely stunned by this announcement, as is our Director of Football Les Ferdinand and our manager Mark Warburton.

“Incredibly, there has been absolutely no consultation with individual clubs nor with the Championship doctors’ working group by the divisional representatives – or anyone else in the Football League – regarding this matter. On top of that, we were only made aware of the statement 40 minutes before it was made public.

“Having spoken with Les and Mark, they share my views. We are vehemently opposed to this schedule. The players haven’t even returned to full-contact training at this moment and yet they are now expected to be in a position to play at a competitive level in just three weeks’ time.

“I have made our feelings known to the EFL and, having spoken with a number of CEOs at other Championship clubs, I am not a lone voice on this matter. We are absolutely appalled.”

As it stands, QPR are 13th in the Championship but still harbour very realistic hopes of finishing in a play-off place, just six points behind sixth-placed Preston with nine matches still to play (as per TransferMarkt). Therefore, the R’s still have a tangible incentive to resume rather than merely being left to play out the remainder of their season.

Despite the UK government approving the return of live sport behind closed doors from today, Hoos’ concerns about QPR returning to action on 20 June are understandable. His reservations about the players not being able to adequately get up to match speed by then, considering that they have yet to resume full contact training, are quite valid. Also, for Warburton to share similar concerns, as someone who works daily with the players on the training pitch, is significant.

Indeed, if Hoos is accurate in saying that the EFL took the decision to resume the Championship without even consulting key stakeholders, that reflects terribly on the league’s hierarchy.

Furthermore, QPR potentially face a stiffer challenge than most clubs in terms of players’ fitness and availability – Warburton has a modest squad size of 24 players, the fourth smallest in the division (as per TransferMarkt). Therefore, he can ill afford a glut of injuries or enforced absences when the season resumes.

While some Hoops fans might be eagerly looking forward to the return of live football, albeit without being able to attend matches, Hoos is quite justified in his “vehement” opposition to restarting the season in just 19 days’ time.

QPR fans, do you agree with Hoos’ strong criticism of the decision to resume the Championship on 20 June? Comment below with your views!

Sunderland’s Benji Kimpioka could get rare chance to prove first-team credentials

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

The games continue to come thick and fast for Sunderland, but for manager Phil Parkinson the match against Leicester U21s provides him with the ideal chance to run the rule over the fringe players in his squad.

Laurens De Bock and Brandon Taylor could be involved again after being selected in the matchday squad in the last Leasing.com trophy fixture against Grimsby, with the latter starting at centre-back.

Another who looks set to get his chance is Benji Kimpioka, according to Phil Parkinson’s comments, and his inclusion is a great chance for him to stake his claim for long-term first-team involvement.

Some fans have called for the 19-year-old to be given an opportunity following a return of two goals in six games for the struggling under 23s, and a fixture against a team mainly made up of youngsters should prove suitable.

What’s more, game time has been limited for the winger in the senior side, and so far he has accumulated just nine minutes of playing time this term – none of which came under Jack Ross.

As a result, he should be determined to make the most of his opportunity, and with Lynden Gooch currently sidelined there is a vacant position at right-wing – Luke O’Nien had to play out of position in that role against Southend at the weekend.

Kimpioka seems to have that battling spirit, too, previously stating he will fight to earn a first-team place. He has showed signs of potential, enough for the club to try and pin him down to a long-term deal, and if he begins to show his ability against Grimsby he’ll likely get more chances.

Josh Maja and Denver Hume are recent examples of successful academy graduates, while Parkinson has a track-record of trusting youngsters, as evidenced by his time at Bolton when he introduced Luca Connell, who subsequently thrived and earned a move to Celtic, into the first team.

If Kimpioka can showcase his pace and direct style he will offer Sunderland an alternative option on the wing, and could begin to push for more substitute appearances and further starts in cup competitions – with Gillingham visiting in the FA Cup at the weekend.

Leeds fans can’t get enough of this moment from Ben White

As if he couldn’t endear himself to the fans anymore.

Ben White certainly has made a great impression in his first couple of months in a Whites shirt since joining on loan from Brighton and Hove Albion.

He’s been lauded with praise from the fans, and has even picked up a Player of the Month award to go with it.

He’s been getting plaudits from the pundits as well, with former Leeds man Noel Whelan saying that he could go on to reach the heights of £80m Manchester United defender Harry Maguire.

There was one incident though in this weekend’s game against Birmingham that has really got fans talking.

In the second half and with the visitors bearing down on goal, White threw himself in front of an effort from Alvaro Gimenez and received a bit of a whack in the process for his troubles.

Leeds supporters loved the commitment that he showed in defending the cause, even though he isn’t technically one of their players.

Here’s what they had to say.

On the day that Leeds celebrated their 100th anniversary, you wonder if he’s going to go down in the same breath as some of the legends that have gone before him at Elland Road with moments like this. Although he may have to stick around for a lot longer than his one season on loan to find out.

Real Madrid fans are gushing over Federico Valverde

Real Madrid managed to survive their trip to Turkey in the Champions League and tallied a narrow 1-0 victory over Galatasaray.

Seeing how their start to their European campaign was far from ideal, having lost and drawn their first two games, the result will have come as a huge boost for Zinedine Zidane’s troops.

And one player that had a big hand in that triumph was definitely their young Castilla product, Federico Valverde.

The 21-year-old midfielder started alongside Toni Kroos and Casemiro in midfield and he did not disappoint.

In fact, his display prompted loads of Real Madrid fans to swarm social media and Twitter with various comments of praise and messages of support.

Many called him the future of the club and a joy to watch.

It seems that the young midfielder is slowly but surely winning the hearts of the Madridistas.

Liverpool must improve pass accuracy quickly before it costs them points

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Liverpool’s 100% Premier League record may still be intact but an underwhelming second-half performance against Chelsea almost ended their run, and much of that was due to their deficiency in possession.

On the chalkboard

The Reds have had the majority of possession in all but one of their league matches so far – Chelsea – but in each of those matches they have failed to use the ball effectively in the final third.

Last Sunday’s game was a fine example of that. They had a pass success rate of just 63% in Chelsea’s final third, so it is not surprising that they were unable to produce their usual free-flowing style in open play, instead resorting to goals from set-pieces.

Whilst an effective avenue of goals for Liverpool, with 20 goals last season, set-pieces will only go so far, and against teams more organised than Chelsea they will struggle to find a breakthrough if failings in the final third continue to occur.

In fact, they were uninspiring with the ball in all areas. A pass accuracy of 73% led Chelsea to dominate the ball with 55% possession, and but for a strong defensive display from Joel Matip and fine goalkeeping by Adrian, the Blues would have turned that pressure into an equaliser.

Using the ball effectively

Jurgen Klopp’s side are often so effective with the ball because of the care his midfield trio take when in possession, but in recent games Jordan Henderson has faltered slightly.

The Reds skipper started the season well but performances in his last two away league games against Burnley and Chelsea, in which his pass accuracy was 72% and 59% respectively, show that he is in need of improvement.

A solution could be more patient play, with Liverpool often frantic and turnovers happening frequently, a combined total of 135 recoveries in their trip to Chelsea is evidence of that.

That is partly due to Liverpool’s effectiveness on the press which often means they dont have to rely on intricate play in the final third, but over the course of the season they will face a variety of opponents, and they will need to be effective in all aspects of their game like Manchester City are – with their rivals boasting a pass success rate of 89% compared to Liverpool’s 82%.

Man Utd legend Roy Keane’s sadness at club’s decline sums it all up

[ad_pod ]

Even in his playing days, Roy Keane was never one to shy away from speaking his mind. It often caused him problems with managers and teammates alike, and he has taken that brutal honestly into his punditry work since his retirement from the game.

Fans across the world have gotten used to the Irishman’s dead-pan delivery and savage put-downs. Who could ever forget his classic “Gary, it’s two yards man”, or the brilliantly effective “nonsense”?

But after Manchester United’s insipid 2-0 defeat to West Ham on Saturday, even the hard-nosed Red Devils legend barely had any anger to boil over. It was pure disappointment.

There have been several occasions in the past when Keane has verbally unleashed on the state of affairs at United. But his assessment on Sky Sports at the weekend had none of that vitriol or fury. There was almost an air of resignation the Red Devils have “fallen” way beyond even his darkest nightmares.

You feel anger when you realise the individuals involved are capable of more, but are simply producing below their standards. Keane’s verdict however summed up everything about United’s decline at the moment. How do you possibly get all worked up when this is as good as they’ve got?

If Cristiano Ronaldo was going through a bad patch of form, calling him out could have reinvigorated him. How do you do the same to someone like Scott McTominay, Jesse Lingard or Andreas Pereira?

They often say disappointment can be far worse than anger. And in this instance, Keane’s assessment encapsulates United’s situation to a tee.

Vurnon Anita leaves Leeds with a sense of what could have been

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

There is a curious case with Vurnon Anita. Capped three times at international level, he is very much a story of failed promise.

Signed from Ajax by Newcastle after growing up in the prestigious Dutch club’s academy, his career never really took off in the Premier League.

In fact, since arriving in England, it hasn’t taken off at all.

Now 30, Anita has left Leeds by mutual consent. It took until deadline day in the European window for his future to be resolved but he is now no longer at Elland Road.

That is likely to come as some relief. He never appeared under Marcelo Bielsa for the Whites, joining Willem II on loan in 2018/19.

His average match rating of 6.18, per WhoScored, tells a sorry story though.

This isn’t the player that Leeds arguably thought they were getting.

A versatile individual boasting the ability to play in defence and midfield, this should have been seen as somewhat of a coup for the Championship. Among certain supporters, there is a feeling of relief but also a sense that it was a shame things didn’t work out.

But as Anita finally waved farewell, he’ll leave behind a sentiment of what could have been.

He appeared just 22 times for the club but it wasn’t without a lack of promise.

During his first few months at Leeds, Anita played at left-back, a role he initially looked to make his own.

In his first seven starts, he completed a mighty 17 tackles as the Whites lost just once in that time versus Milwall.

He made four of those challenges in his first two outings against Fulham and Sunderland before really impressing against Nottingham Forest. In that fixture, he won three tackles, three interceptions and made four clearances according to WhoScored.

He then made a further five successful challenges against Birmingham.

Statistically, he coped well at full-back and even made a clearance off the line against Ipswich.

There was a slight dip in that loss against Milwall achieving a rating of 6.6 but he was back on it when Leeds beat Burton 5-0, finishing on a 7.

Watch Leeds United Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Those matches gave an indication of the type of player Anita was and what he could have become.

Beyond that point, the Dutchman found things tough. He didn’t appear in the squad for three consecutive games and then had to suffer from being on the bench for the majority of the 2017/18 campaign.

There is unlikely to be much regret surrounding his departure but he was definitely someone who could have offered so much more.
