Glasgow Rangers: Fans laud Jon McLaughlin

Glasgow Rangers have had a fantastic start to the new campaign, and a lot of that has been down to their sturdy backline.

The Gers are currently top of the Premiership table, and have not yet conceded in their first six games. This is the first time in 114 years that a side has not shipped a strike in the opening six fixtures, and they could break the record if they do not concede against Dundee United this weekend.

A lot of this success has been down to Jon McLaughlin. The 33-year-old signed for the Gers on a free transfer from Sunderland earlier this summer and was expected to be a back-up option for Allan McGregor. However, the latter’s injury issues have given McLaughlin the chance to shine, and he has now kept five clean sheets in his first five matches.

On Wednesday, the club shared a photo of the £293,000-valued two-time Scotland international – as per Transfermarkt – to celebrate his birthday, and the fans took the opportunity to laud him. They took to Twitter to share their thoughts, and you can see some of the best comments from the social media platform below.

Everton could land their own Pogba in Abdoulaye Doucoure

It is no secret that Everton are desperate for midfield additions this summer and they could land themselves a box-to-box dream in Abdoulaye Doucoure.

What’s the word?

According to the Evening Standard, the Toffees have already failed with a bid for the relegated Watford star with the offer falling short of their £25m valuation.

It’s claimed that the Merseysiders have a long-standing interest in the French midfielder and they are expected to return with a new bid in due course.

Doucoure is even open to a move to Goodison Park so personal terms aren’t expected to be an issue.

Pogba-esque midfielder

Everton do appear to be closing in on Napoli enforcer Allan, but their spending shouldn’t stop there as Doucoure could be the perfect compliment in a 4-3-3 system.

The 27-year-old has been likened to Man Utd superstar Paul Pogba by Owen Hargreaves in the past, claiming that “He’s got goals, he’s got assists he’s so athletic. He’s got that frame of Paul Pogba, he’s got a good touch and he can finish.”

Despite being relegated with the Hornets this season, Doucoure was one of the few bright sparks. He provided four goals and two assists and displayed those box-to-box capabilities in averaging 1.7 tackles, 1.6 shots and 1.1 dribbles per appearance, via WhoScored.

These are characteristics that neither Andre Gomes, Gylfi Sigurdsson or Tom Davies possess in the Toffees squad.

In addition, Jamie Redknapp believes that Doucoure is one of the most “underrated” players in the Premier League, and it’s these sort of players that Ancelotti should be targeting.

With Allan sat at the base of a three-man midfield, the 6-foot Frenchman could be deployed next to Gomes in the same way that Pogba has played alongside Nemanja Matic and Fred at Old Trafford.

Whilst £25m is hardly a scratch above the surface in this day and age. Doucoure would be a steal so Marcel Brands must pull out all the stops to convince Farhad Moshiri to stump up the cash this summer.

Liverpool: Fans debate over the future of Adrian and Loris Karius

Liverpool fans have kicked into debate following a recent Instagram post from forgotten goalkeeper Loris Karius.

The German has uploaded some photos from a recent Melwood training session alongside fellow shot-stoppers Alisson and Adrian. Liverpool fan account @LFCTransferRoom has posted the snaps from Karius’ story and fans are trying to decide whether he has a future at the club or not.

The 27-year-old hasn’t featured for the Reds since his disaster in between the sticks against Real Madrid in the 2018 Champions League final. Since his nightmarish performance, Karius has been an elusive member of the team, spending two seasons on loan with Besiktas following the appointment of £66.8million Alisson (via BBC Sport).

Since his arrival, the Brazilian has helped transform Liverpool’s defence and has contributed to their sixth Champions League title and first ever Premier League trophy. Now, Jurgen Klopp could be faced with a dilemma as he decides who should serve as deputy to the former Roma man.

Loads of Kopites are discussing this situation and many have mixed opinions on whether Karius or Adrian should be next in line to Alisson. One fan thinks the German ‘needs to go’ whilst another has countered that by saying they want Adrian ‘out at all costs’.

The Spaniard was held responsible for Liverpool’s calamitous exits from both the FA Cup and Champions League last season.

Josh Windass: Gerrard plotting Rangers swoop for former star

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard is keen for additions to bolster their chances at a genuine run at the title and this week, he’s been linked with a move for a former Ibrox star.

What’s the word?

According to Football Insider, the Scottish giants have joined the race to clinch Josh Windass from Wigan Athletic this summer with his loan club Sheffield Wednesday and Middlesbrough also in the hunt.

It’s claimed that the Gers are keen to bring him back to Glasgow just two years after he was sold on deadline day for £2.5m.

Meanwhile, leading talisman Alfredo Morelos is edging ever closer to an exit after Lille opened negotiations with Rangers over a record-breaking £17m deal, so a new threat is certainly going to be required in the attack.

Smart call?

Windass’ time in Scotland was pretty decent overall, providing 19 goals and 13 assists in 73 appearances, via Transfermarkt, and ultimately, he was a player that Gerrard didn’t want to let go in the first place.

The 26-year-old revealed in an interview with Open Goal, via the Scotsman, that the Rangers boss was keen to keep hold of him – “He basically said, ‘you’ve got a decision to make. The board have accepted this offer, I don’t want you to go but obviously it’s down to you’.”

Whilst the former Reds midfielder labelled Windass a “good boy” but claimed that he couldn’t guarantee him starts as a number nine, and now it appears that time may have arrived.

This season, the attacking maestro has split time between Wigan and the Owls, where he has netted seven goals from 25 matches whilst averaging 2 shots, 0.9 key passes and 0.5 dribbles per game playing predominantly through the middle, via WhoScored.

Those at Ibrox know Windass all too well and given the uncertain future of Morelos, bringing back the former midfielder could be a wise decision for Ross Wilson to make.

O jogo recomeçou elétrico no segundo tempo.

Mateo Ponte, no fim, ainda faria.

Como ficou a situação de cada um

Com o resultado, o Botafogo encerra o Brasileirão na 6ª posição, ainda sem vaga direta na Libertadores. O Fortaleza, por sua vez, está rebaixado

Everton fans react as Mikel Arteta emerges as contender to replace Marco Silva

The Liverpool Echo report that former Everton midfielder Mikel Arteta has emerged as a new content for the Toffees’ vacant managerial role, and fans of the Merseyside outfit have been quick to react on Twitter.

The Spaniard, who made 209 appearances for Everton during a six-and-a-half year spell with the Premier League side, is currently working as Pep Guardiola’s assistant at Manchester City.

The Liverpool Echo say that the 37-year-old is one of the names being discussed at boardroom level at Goodison Park though, and he is seen as a ‘serious contender’.

Given he has no managerial experience his appointment would have to be seen as a risk. However, plenty of supporters who have had their say seem content at the possibility of him taking charge, with one even saying he would be a better fit than Carlo Ancelotti, who The Telegraph report is the first-choice option.

However, not every fan is happy about Arteta being named as Marco Silva’s successor, and rightly so given their current predicament and his lack of experience of being the main man.

One individual chose to fire a dig at chairman Bill Kenwright and suggested that the Spaniard would be a cheap alternative, while another suggested that if it comes down to a straight choice between the 37-year-old and Ancelotti, the board would be mad not to select the latter.

Wolves’ pursuit of James Rodriguez would be an outrageously silly move

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

According to El Desmarque, Wolverhampton Wanderers are one of the clubs interested in making a play for Real Madrid midfielder James Rodriguez but it’s not necessarily a signing they should want to make.

What’s the word?

Reports in Spain suggest that the Colombian international is out of favour under Zinedine Zidane despite managing to start five of nine games in La Liga and the Champions League this term.

It is thought that Rodriguez has slipped alongside Gareth Bale in the Frenchman’s estimations because of matters off the field, leading to president Florentino Perez sounding out any proposals in the January transfer window.

The 28-year-old had been sent out on a two-year loan deal to Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich, where he scored 15 times and assisted 20 goals in 67 appearances, but that wasn’t enough for the club to pick up the option to make it a permanent move.

Outrageous

Rodriguez, who is valued at £45m by Transfermarkt, is a client of football super-agent Jorge Mendes and his arrival in the west Midlands would eclipse any fee they have ever paid.

The representative has deep ties with those high up in the hierarchy at the club so there’s no denying that these links carry some substantiation considering he could sweeten any deal, but if Wolves have any sense then they’ll steer clear.

According to Forbes, Rodriguez earns $21.4m (£16.6m) per year at Madrid and that sort of amount combined with any transfer fee makes any deal seem completely absurd.

The club pulled back on a move for Ruben Dias in the summer because of his €66m (£56.2m) release clause so why would they pay in excess of this for a player that will be coming close to his 30s by the end of next season – that would just go against Fosun’s plans too.

Rodriguez undoubtedly was one of the best players in the world after his rapid rise following his 2014 World Cup campaign but since then he’s become somewhat stagnant.

He’s unlikely to come in and replace Joao Moutinho given the 33-year-old has just signed a three-year contract extension too.

Sheffield Wednesday boss Garry Monk’s comments show just how well he’s done

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Sheffield Wednesday manager Garry Monk has talked up his side following their 0-0 stalemate in Saturday’s Yorkshire derby.

His post-game thoughts go to great lengths in highlighting just how much of a brilliant job he’s done so far at Hillsborough.

What’s he said?

Both teams missed an opportunity to take possession of the Championship lead at the weekend as first-placed West Bromwich Albion slipped up at home to Charlton Athletic.

The Owls had one of the best chances of the match in the second half when Steven Fletcher rifled an attempt off the crossbar while Leeds United could have won it late on if wing-back Ezgjan Alioski’s header was inches to one side.

Speaking after the match, the 40-year-old said:

“We were very unlucky not to have won the game.

“If you keep putting in performances like that and pushing that standard like that, you’ll be able to win games, dominate games and regularly be in situations where you take points whilst we’re still growing.

“We were up against a team that has been together for two seasons under that manager and we have been together for eight weeks and the way we went about it, you’d have thought it was the other way round.

“I was very proud of that performance.”

Major encouragements

Wednesday currently occupy a playoff position in fifth place as they remain three points behind West Brom.

Under Monk, they have lost just one of eight matches, and that came in the absence of their top goalscorer, Fletcher.

It means the south Yorkshire side have picked up 15 points from a possible 24, which prior to the game had the former Leeds boss well on track to smash all of his recent predecessors out of the water.

The Owls haven’t been able to reach the Championship playoffs since 2017 recording successive seasons languishing in midtable, so the fact that Monk has them in and around the top five at this early stage is only a compliment on just how well he’s done in such a short space of time.

In addition to that, he’s not been able to fully stamp his own mark on the squad after joining at the start of September, outside of the transfer window.

All the more impressive.

Man Utd ace Andreas Pereira delivered a Paul Pogba-esque performance

This article is part of Football FanCast’s In Numbers series, which takes a statistical look at performances, season-long form and reported transfer targets…

In an impressive team performance against Liverpool, Marcus Rashford no doubt stole most of the headlines for appearing to kick-start his season at Manchester United with a goal. But one man who perhaps may have flown under the radar, was Andreas Pereira.

How much money could you make busking for a week as a freestyle footballer? Find out in the video below…

The Brazilian appears to be a trusted lieutenant of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, becoming a main-stay of the first-team picture this season. The 23-year-old has played nine times across all competitions, and has featured in all but one of United’s Premier league games. He has regularly deployed from the right-hand side, appearing there in six different matches. But against Liverpool on Sunday afternoon, the Red Devils boss entrusted him with the number ten role. And boy did it pay dividends.

As the likes of Mason Greenwood and Axel Tuanzebe continue to be the talk of the town as the most promising academy products, it is easy to forget that Pereira has come through the Red Devils academy too after joining the club back in 2011.

His display against Liverpool typified everything that Solskjaer is seemingly keen on implementing: a fast, attacking game, with a commitment to pressing from the front and doing the hard yards. As Graeme Souness testified to on Sky Sports, the United midfield bossed the visitors in the middle of the park, and that was in no small part thanks to Pereira’s dynamism.

Watch Manchester United Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

All the talk this summer revolved around the future of Paul Pogba and whether the France World Cup winner would be leaving the club. As a bona-fide star, it may be understandable if the United faithful are reluctant to see him go. But in Pereira, they have someone who can equally affect games in powerful ways both at the defensive and offensive ends.

As per Sofascore, he won five duels, two tackles and made three interceptions as he set about trying to hustle and harry Liverpool’s midfield trio. It was a tenacity and drive that filtered through to the rest of his teammates, and whilst he put in a lung-busting effort to help the side out off the ball, he contributed in equal measure whenever he was in possession. His three key passes were a joint game-high and his three accurate long balls were often the start of some promising counter-attacks for Solskjaer’s men.

So whilst United may be wary of letting Pogba go, Pereira’s unbelievable all-action display against their arch-rivals on Sunday may have just given the club a glimpse of a potential in-house successor to the Frenchman.
