Shoaib not picked for ODI series

Uncertainty surrounding Shoaib Akhtar’s match fitness has led to his exclusion from the squad for the ODI series against Sri Lanka

Cricinfo staff18-Jul-2009Shoaib Akhtar will not be considered for the upcoming ODI series against Sri Lanka, because of the uncertainty surrounding his match fitness, Wasim Bari, the PCB director for human resources and administration, has said. “Without knowing his match fitness how can we select him for the series,” Bari was quoted as saying to . “Until he does not play a few matches we cannot be sure of his match fitness.”However, Shoaib still stands a chance of being selected for the squad for the Champions Trophy to be held in South Africa later in the year. The PCB is to finalise its preliminary list of 30 players for the tournament by July 23. “If he [Shoaib] is in the 30, his fitness can be assessed later on,” Bari said.Shoaib missed last month’s World Twenty20 due to a skin infection, and last represented Pakistan in the five-match ODI series against Australia two months ago. Last week, he insisted he was back at full fitness, and claimed that he had “three to four good years left in him”.Shoaib, 33, has not been a regular member of the Pakistan side of late due to disciplinary issues as well as injuries. He was involved in a tussle with the PCB after reportedly criticising the board publicly for not awarding him a central contract. Subsequently, upon his return to international cricket, he was dropped after a poor ODI series against Sri Lanka and again under-performed against Australia, taking three wickets with an average of over 50.

Arsenal fans slam Tomiyasu vs Brighton

Many Arsenal fans have slammed the performance of Takehiro Tomiyasu in their 0-0 draw at Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday evening.

The Japan international endured a pretty torrid time up against Marc Cucurella in what was the firstgame where he has struggled since arriving from Bologna in the summer transfer window.

Tomiyasu lost out on five of his duels and also failed to block any shots or make any tackles, dribbles, key passes or crosses from right-back (Sofascore).

He also lost possession of the ball on 13 separate occasions in the match, the joint-fourth most of any of his teammates (Sofascore).

Nonetheless, with the international break coming up, Tomiyasu will now be able to take his mind away from the Gunners and then come back stronger when they face Crystal Palace at the Emirates Stadium in their next Premier League fixture on 18 October.

Crystal Palace: Fans react to Conor Gallagher update

Crystal Palace loanee Conor Gallagher picked up the club’s Player of the Month award for September.

And, as to be expected, a number of Eagles fans were quick to react to the confirmed news on social media.

Gallagher won the award in August with 89.2% of fans’ votes and sealed another Player of the Month triumph with over 47% of votes for September.

The 21-year-old played every minute of action last month under Patrick Vieira, registering three assists in as many games. Two of those came against Tottenham in a 3-0 win, with the central midfielder also winning a penalty against Brighton earlier in the week.

Palace pipped Leeds United to Gallagher’s services on a season-long loan from Chelsea over the summer, and that move has proven to be a shrewd one.

The Eagles posted the news of Gallagher’s consecutive POTM awards on their official Twitter page on Thursday.

This is what these Palace supporters had to say in reply, with one labelling Gallagher as ‘outstanding’.

Uganda push on, Afghanistan back on track

After an opening-day defeat, Afghanistan put themselves back in contention with a 13-run win over much-fancied Hong Kong at Belgrano on the second day of the ICC World Cricket League Division 3. The match went to the wire thanks to Hong Kong’s late-order batting, with 98 added for the last two wickets.Afghanistan’s top order, which completely failed on Saturday, showed much greater stability. Openers Karim Khan and Shafiqullah Shafaq demonstrated excellent shot selection in a stand of 72, but when both fell within the space of three balls, Hong Kong were right back in the game.Quality spin bowling from Nadeem Ahmed (2 for 23) and Najeeb Ahmed (2 for 35) helped contain some solid middle-order batting, although no-one managed to go on and make a really big score.Afghanistan’s final total of 201 in 49.5 overs looked just about par on a bouncy pitch, but Hong Kong’s reply never got going, none of the top eight passing 20. At 90 for 8 the match was petering towards a foregone conclusion, but Munir Dar, who made 49 off 38 balls, including three consecutive sixes off Mohammad Nabi, rekindled the excitement. Nevertheless, when he was bowled by Samiullah Shenwari that appeared to be that. But Nadeem Ahmed at No. 11 continued to attack, smacking 27 from 18 balls before top-edging a hook to Mawais Naziri on the boundary edge.”In the end it was a good effort, especially from Munir, as he looked like he was desperate to win the game and it could have gone either way,” said Hong Kong skipper Tabarak Dar. “He has won us the game at No. 8 before and we bat all the way down to 11 so we always have a chance of winning the game.””It was a very good game,” admitted Kabir Khan, Afghanistan’s coach. “There were plenty of nerves but I was very confident in my team and it was a good win for us as it kept alive our hopes in the tournament. I was worried as we didn’t have any of our regular bowlers left and Nabi started bowling medium-pace as it is a short ground and it doesn’t spin and anything could go for six. The players have started thinking now and they are adjusting to different situations which makes me proud to be with them and proud to be their coach.”Hosts Argentina have it all to do after a second successive defeat, going down to Papua New Guinea by 21 runs at St Albans Club, with Rarua Dikana, who took his second five-wicket haul in as many days, doing all the damage.Dikana took 5 for 5 in 8.4 overs after PNG had been bowled out for 127. They started well, Vani Vagi Morea’s 39 off 35 balls dominating an opening stand of 59. But after he was dismissed the innings fell away, Diego Lord taking 4 for 34.Argentina slid to 28 for 4, but recovered to 69 for 4 before Dikana ripped through the lower order. “I think there’s still a long way to go, but two wins from two games is good,” Dikana said. “We still have a lot of improvements to make, especially in our batting, and we need to play better against Uganda. It’s so far, so good for us. “I’m enjoying my time with the ball in this tournament. I concentrate on bowling in the right areas and we do a lot of work on this and try and make the batsmen play.”A brilliant 81 not out from Roger Mukasa helped Uganda to a nine-wicket win over Cayman Islands at the Hurlingham Club with more than 23 overs to spare.Cayman Islands’ form has already made them favourites to be one of the two sides relegated, and their batsmen again failed to post anything close to a decent score as they were bowled out for 104.

Newcastle transfer update on Diakhaby

Newcastle United are now reportedly eyeing a move for Valencia centre-back Mouctar Diakhaby before the summer transfer window ends.

The Lowdown: Centre-back wanted

The St. James’ Park faithful are after a new central defender, with the likes of Ozan Kabak and Phil Jones recently being linked.

However, with the deadline just a few days away, they need to act fast if they are going to bring one in, and Steve Bruce has admitted funds are running thin.

The Latest: Diakhaby eyed

As per AS, the North East club have not ruled out the possibility of signing Diakhaby, who sees Tyneside as a ‘good destination’ for him.

The Valencia ace wants to play in the Premier League, and would cost Bruce’s team a fee in the region of between €8-10m (£6.9-8.6m) in order to secure his signature.

The Verdict: Sign

At 24 years of age, Diakhaby has not reached his peak yet, and so potentially paying a mere £6.9m for him would represent good business by the Magpies.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/newcastle-updates-5/” title=”Newcastle updates! (5)” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

With a six-foot-three frame, he would offer them a threat in both boxes and should have few problems in coping with the physical demands of the top flight.

Nonetheless, having played in the UEFA Champions League with two different sides (Transfermarkt), Diakhaby has experience of playing at the highest level, and so should raise the games of those around him.

Spurs XI vs Pacos - team and injury news

Tottenham Hotspur begin their UEFA Europa Conference League campaign later this evening.

Nuno Santo and his squad head to Portugal to face Pacos de Ferreira for the first leg of their qualifying clash at the Estadio Capital do Movel Stadium.

The 47-year-old head coach has already confirmed that he will be making vast changes for the encounter, with none of Sunday’s starting XI that defeated defending champions Manchester City expected to feature from the off.

That means plenty of Spurs’ fringe players and youth prospects are likely to start tonight but what sort of XI could we see from the Portuguese?

Football FanCast have predicted tonight’s lineup…

As mentioned above, there should be a whopping 11 changes from Sunday’s 1-0 victory over City, though Harry Kane has not travelled and Joe Rodon is out through injury, as per football.london.

With club captain Hugo Lloris earning a rest, there is likely to be a competitive debut for summer signing Pierluigi Gollini, who has joined on loan from Atalanta to be the Frenchman’s back-up this season.

His former teammate back in Italy, Cristian Romero, is another who looks set to start after Eric Dier and Davinson Sanchez guided Spurs to a clean sheet at the weekend.

The 23-year-old colossus could partner youth product Maksim Paskotsi, who featured in many of the Lilywhites’ preseason matches as a right-back under Nuno. However, his primary position is in the middle and without Rodon, the young Estonian could be trusted at centre-back in what would be his senior debut.

Two of the full-backs named on the bench on Sunday, Ben Davies and Matt Doherty, should make a straight swap with Sergio Reguillon and Japhet Tanganga.

Meanwhile, in midfield, we could see a three-man engine room of Harry Winks, Giovani Lo Celso and another Hotspur Way academy star, Nile John.

They’ll replace Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Oliver Skipp (who has not travelled) and Dele Alli, whilst there’s no place for Tanguy Ndombele once again as uncertainty over his long-term future in north London continues to rumble on.

There could also be a third debutant in the starting XI, with Spanish winger Bryan Gil in line to feature from the off. He may partner the returning Ryan Sessegnon in the attack.

The versatile £25m wide man has not played for Spurs since March 2020 – the 3-0 defeat to RB Leipzig in the Champions League – and enjoyed a fruitful loan spell at their Bundesliga rivals Hoffenheim last term.

Whilst Nuno has confirmed that 17-year-0ld “diamond” Dane Scarlett will lead the line in the absence of Kane and Heung-min Son.

Desmanche?

Romano confirms Spurs’ Vlahovic interest

Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Tottenham have a genuine interest in Dusan Vlahovic, although they have not yet made an offer for the Serbia international.

The Lowdown: Spurs eye a striker

Harry Kane previously dropped a bombshell on the club by saying he wants to leave this summer (Sky Sports), and he is yet to start a game under new manager Nuno Espirito Santo (Transfermarkt).

As such, Spurs are said to be looking at signing a striker, with Vlahovic said to be on their shortlist.

The Latest: Spurs eye Vlahovic

Romano has provided an update on Spurs’ pursuit of the Fiorentina striker via his Twitter channel.

He claimed that Spurs have a ‘genuine’ interest in Vlahovic, but they have not yet made an offer. Atletico Madrid have had a bid turned down, he added, while Manchester City are not working on the deal for the 21-year-old.

The Verdict: Not much time left

There is just over a week left before the transfer window slams shut. While Harry Kane has not yet departed, Manchester City are still said to be looking to sign the England captain (The Telegraph). Until the transfer window slams shut, there is no guarantee that he will stay in north London.

Even if he were to stay this summer, Spurs would still need a new centre-forward, and Vlahovic would be a fantastic candidate. He netted 21 goals in 37 Serie A matches outfit for Fiorentina last season, and has two in two in all competitions this term (Transfermarkt). Also, according to Serie A expert Conor Clancy in an interview with This Is Futbol, “people were saying this guy’s the real deal”, a further hint of the Serbian’s talent.

Valued at £36m and with Fiorentina eager to hold on to Vlahovic, he would not come cheap, but Daniel Levy cannot afford be to put off by a big asking price, especially if Kane doesn’t hang around much longer.

In other news, Tottenham also want to sign this World Cup finalist.

Callum McGregor could replace Cabaye at Palace

Crystal Palace could finally replace instrumental midfielder Yohan Cabaye this summer, three years after he departed the club.

What’s the story?

According to French outlet Homme du Match, the Eagles are preparing a £7m offer for the Scotland international Callum McGregor as new manager Patrick Vieira looks to add some class to his engine room options.

The Celtic captain has cultivated an enviable reputation for himself after winning 14 major trophies in his homeland, and he could be the perfect complement to Palace’s current options in the middle of the pitch.

Patrick Vieira would love him

After arriving at Selhurst Park in July 2015, Cabaye quickly became the heartbeat of a successful Palace side, dictating the tempo of their play with his quick thinking and precise passes, attributes which McGregor also possesses.

At the peak of his powers in south London during his first season with the capital club, the Frenchman averaged an impressive two shots per league game, 1.5 key passes and 0.4 dribbles, recording a passing accuracy of 82.6%, as per WhoScored.

McGregor’s comparative figures for last term outline the obvious similarities between the pair, with the 28-year-old managing 1.6 shots per game, 1.6 key passes and 0.8 dribbles.

While the likes of James McArthur, Luka Milivojevic and Cheikhou Kouyate have done an admirable job in the Palace midfielder since Cabaye’s departure, the trio are more industrious and pragmatic than their elegant predecessor.

Applying a touch of finesse to proceedings is something McGregor has been doing in Glasgow for a number of years now, and his impressive displays have earned many plaudits down the years, including former Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers.

“He controls the tempo of the game,” said Rodgers. “He is a boy that takes the ball, so clever in his movements, and we ask him to go into certain area of the pitch to offer support. He has a dream of a touch that allows him to go forward.

“His feet are nice and soft, he doesn’t play backwards so much, and he has a great range of passes, and he has the personality now to play those passes, not just one that is secure to keep the ball, he can break a line with a pass and open up and split up the game for us.

“He has been absolutely exceptional in that role, but I say that everywhere he plays.”

Therefore, Vieira would surely love to sign McGregor this summer, taking another significant step in his mission to overhaul the decaying squad Roy Hodgson left behind.

And, in other news…Fabrizio Romano drops exciting Palace transfer update that’ll leave fans buzzing
