Oriol Romeu disappoints in latest Southampton loss, shouldn’t start against Fulham

[ad_pod ]

Despite largely struggling to displace Mark Hughes’ preferred central-midfield duo of Mario Lemina and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Oriol Romeu has become a mainstay in the position under current Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl.

The Spaniard once again started in the 2-0 defeat against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, and his performance perhaps wasn’t up to the standard that Saints fans have been used to from him previously.

The former Chelsea man is there to put pressure on the opposition and break up the play, as well as winning the ball back and generally protecting the backline – his role becomes even more important when the middle centre-back, Jack Stephens in recent weeks, brings the ball out of the defence.

Romeu certainly did his bit in terms of the former as he made two tackles and three interceptions, but his distribution from the 48 passes he had was a real negative – a success rate of less than 69% followed as the 27-year-old struggled when in possession.

Yes, the south coast outfit were largely under pressure against when of the better teams in the Premier League, but he should have been doing better.

Attentions turn to the huge clash against Fulham at St Mary’s on Wednesday when the hosts will be looking to pick up a crucial three points that could move them out of the relegation zone.

Hasenhuttl has preferred to stick with a five-at-the-back formation in recent times but the fact he switched to four at half-time against the Gunners proves that things may be changing, and sacrificing a centre-back could also lead to midfield changes.

The 51-year-old used the former system that some people would conceive as negative in the reverse against Cardiff City, using Romeu, James Ward-Prowse and Hojbjerg in the centre.

It wasn’t a tactic that worked and when you are trying to break down an opponent and a side that could come to St Mary’s for a draw, you don’t need those three players.

In fact, Ward-Prowse is showing the aggression in his game that is one of his Spanish teammate’s strengths, and he and Hojbjerg are good enough to do a job against Claudio Ranieri’s men alone, allowing Hasenhuttl to bring in another much-needed attacking player to the starting XI.

Aston Villa loanee Andre Green may be in line for a new contract

Aston Villa loanee Andre Green may be in line for a new contract with the club, as has been reported by Football Insider.

What’s the story?

The 21-year-old’s future is currently uncertain, as his contract at Villa Park is coming to an end during the summer of 2020.

His case for a new one was not helped by his time at Preston North End, which saw his season-long loan cut short after being afforded just 87 minutes of football across four substitute appearances.

However, he has turned his campaign around at the Valley, which may have been enough to get himself into Dean Smith’s future thinking and earn himself a new contract with the club.

Villa do have an option to extend his current contract, or they could offer him a long-term one.

Big performances, big rewards

Since moving to Charlton in early January, Green has already become an integral part of Lee Bowyer’s side, as they look to stay up in the Championship.

Having not made a single league start at Deepdale, he has already made four in red, either playing off the main striker or being part of a front two with Lyle Taylor.

This has worked to great effect with the 21-year-old already bagging two goals. The first of those came against Preston when he scored his first Deepdale goal of the campaign in any competition. That was followed up by a vital strike in the bottom of the table win over Barnsley.

Did he really play for us?! No Villa fan has managed to name all of these obscure Villans….

In addition to that, he also assisted Ben Purrington’s goal with a pinpoint cross towards the back post for the left-back to get on the end of.

If Green continues form such as this, then it has been put across that there is a realistic chance he could earn himself another contract with the Villans, which would be thoroughly deserved.

Meanwhile, another loanee has made a positive start to life away from Villa Park.

Newcastle reportedly agree deal to sign Lukaku

[ad_pod ]According to Italian media outlet Gianluca Di Marzio on Twitter, Newcastle have reportedly agreed a deal to sign Lazio left back Jordan Lukaku on loan until the end of the season.

What’s the word?

Well, according to Gianluca Di Marzio, the deal is done to send the Belgian international to Tyneside for the remainder of the season.

The 24 year-old, who is the brother of Manchester United’s Romelu Lukaku, has started just once in Serie A this season, as per Transfermarkt.

Newcastle were strongly linked with a move for Monaco man Antonio Barreca, per Sky Sports, a deal that now looks highly unlikely with the reported capture of Lukaku.

Why do they need him?

Newcastle are absolutely desperate for some extra pace and dynamism in the side, and nowhere is that more apparent than on the left flank.

Kenedy has been a shell of the player that arrived on loan in the second half of last season, and Paul Dummett simply does not have the quality on the ball to be a top Premier League full back.

Which Man Utd star got fed by Salt Bae this week? Check out the video below to find out…

The arrival of Lukaku will force Dummett to up his game, and if the Belgian forges a good relationship with Kenedy then it could be an excellent signing from Rafael Benitez.

Why would he be a good signing?

Lukaku’s athleticism means he can bomb up and down the wing for 90 minutes without losing a step, and his assist numbers suggest his arrival will have a positive impact on Salomon Rondon.

The Belgian racked up ten assists in 83 games for Belgian side KV Oostende and six assists in 72 games for Lazio, per Transfermarkt.

The flying full-back has been out of favour so far this season, starting just once in the league for Lazio. However, that is mainly due to the fact that he missed the start of the campaign with a knee injury, from which he has now fully recovered.

He made 30 league appearances last campaign, and his ability to play as a wing-back will appeal to Benitez, who has often opted to use a back-three this season.

With his constant overlapping runs, dangerous crosses and impressive versatility, this could prove to be a crucial capture in the Magpies’ relegation race.

So, Newcastle fans, are you happy with the move for Lukaku? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below…

HYS: Should Milner be in Liverpool’s first XI against Arsenal?

[ad_pod ]

At the start of the season, not many Liverpool fans would have been surprised if James Milner was given a bit-part role.

The Merseyside outfit recruited two new midfielders in Fabinho and Naby Keita, which made it that much harder for the fringe players to get a look-in.

For Milner, though, he was given a starring role in Liverpool’s midfield, and for the most part has been a regular in the team.

Last weekend, the former Manchester City star was named on the bench for the team’s Premier League match against Cardiff City at Anfield.

Adam Lallana was selected instead as he played in a midfield alongside Fabinho and Georginio Wijnaldum.

This weekend, the Reds will go head to head with Arsenal at the Emirates and there could be more tinkering from manager Jurgen Klopp.

Liverpool are unbeaten in the top flight so far this season, and they will be hoping to keep up with Man City in the title race by overcoming Unai Emery’s side on Saturday.

With that in mind, should Milner come back into the line-up, or would he make a better impact coming off the bench?

Let us know by voting below.

Opinion: Potential Klopp decision on player shows just how good the manager is for Liverpool

Jurgen Klopp is a popular man at Anfield, and with good reason. The Reds have improved significantly under his leadership, and they look almost certain to challenge for the Premier League title this season.

However, since his arrival at Liverpool, Klopp has become as well-known for his personality as he is his tactical awareness. A bold and fiery individual, the German seems to have a connection with his players that just works, and that has undoubtedly played a crucial role in the rise of the Reds.

Often seemingly more eager to put an arm around a player rather than issue a stern warning or complaint, the German’s positive rapport with his playing contingent is clear, and that has been reflected once again by a recent note from the Bleacher Report.

According to the Bleacher Report, Liverpool would apparently prefer to hang on to Loris Karius over Simon Mignolet this summer, with one of the two players likely to leave following the arrival of Alisson.

This apparent show of faith is yet another example of how much of a positive impact Klopp is having at Anfield.

After all, it would have been very easy for Klopp to simply give up on Karius after last season. The German has been the butt of many jokes since moving to Anfield, and that came to a head in the Champions League final – with Karius vilified for what was undoubtedly a very poor performance. That, combined with a string of other mistakes throughout the course of the campaign, surely would have left many Liverpool fans calling for an exit.

Instead, though, Klopp looks ready to give him another chance – albeit as second-choice – and that’s an approach that other managers maybe wouldn’t take. Jose Mourinho, for example, has repeatedly vilified players like Anthony Martial and Luke Shaw at Old Trafford, and that has, more often than not, ended poorly for him.

In Karius, though, Klopp clearly recognise the potential – and he’s unwilling to simply cast him aside.

For Liverpool, this could have hugely positive consequences. Not only will it give player confidence knowing that their manager isn’t going to abandon them, but it will also more directly give Karius a boost. There is a decent player in there, somewhere, and he needs to find it. Being farmed out on loan or in a permanent transfer isn’t going to do his confidence any good at all. Instead, faith could be what he needs – and Klopp giving it to him could be huge for all involved.

Even if it is, indeed, Kariuss that is sold – Klopp’s faith is evident, and that is in stark contrast to the approach of some other managers.

In Focus: Chelsea legend claims Spurs’ new man has joined the wrong team

Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea both endured a dramatic transfer window this summer but fans of the North London side may be aggrieved by these comments made to Sky Sports.

What’s the story?

Arriving in a late deal from Paris Saint-Germain, Ivorian defender Serge Aurier moved to Tottenham Hotspur as a direct replacement for Kyle Walker, who joined Manchester City earlier in the season, and the full-back will aim to get his career back-on-track.

Highly-rated across the continent, Aurier was involved in a number of unsavoury incidents during his time in the French capital- including a charge of assault that made him unable to travel to England last year to face Arsenal in the Champions League.

Spurs will look to turn the defender’s reputation around though and Mauricio Pochettino’s ability to get the very best out of young players will be decisive. However, in comments cited by The Daily Express, Chelsea legend Didier Drogba joked his close friend had joined the wrong side.

What was said?

Soccer Football – Paris St Germain – Training – Paris, France – August 23, 2017 Paris St Germain’s Serge Aurier during training REUTERS/Benoit Tessier

Speaking to Sky Sports, the Premier League icon said:

“I just spoke to him a few hours ago. He’s so happy to be in England and of course we’re going to help him.  He’s my younger brother so I’m going to give him some tips.”

“He plays for the wrong team! But I’m happy for him, very happy for his move.”

Is Drogba right?

Time will tell whether Didier Drogba’s joke turns out to be a very accurate prediction, as Aurier faces a battle to establish himself in Tottenham’s first-choice line-up due to impressive performances from young defender Kyle Walker-Pieters.

Chelsea were also in the running for the Paris Saint-Germain man, with Antonio Conte looking to bolster his options at wing-back, and Aurier would perhaps have been a superior option to Victor Moses, who occupied that position for the Premier League champions throughout last season.

However, Aurier should get plenty of opportunities to make his mark with Tottenham as the Lilywhites will have to balance their squad through involvement across all competitions, starting with this week’s Champions League crunch tie with Borussia Dortmund.

Derby County trying to snap up League One winger ahead of rivals

Derby County are in the market for Oxford United winger Marvin Johnson, reports the Daily Mail.

What’s the story?

The Rams are believed to have begun strategising ahead of this summer’s transfer window.

It is unlikely that Derby will reach the playoffs this season as they currently reside 10 points behind the top six in the Championship.

With the club expecting to compete in the second tier for the 2017-18 campaign, attention has turned to League One for transfer targets.

According to the Daily Mail, Derby manager Steve McClaren has been impressed by the winger’s performances for Oxford and is considering a summer swoop.

Should Johnson join Derby?

The 26-year-old is likely to have attracted plenty of interest from Championship clubs due to his form at Kassam Stadium.

Johnson has made 27 League One appearances, 22 of which were starts, and has scored five goals in all competitions.

The winger joined the U’s from Motherwell just last year, but it would be difficult to turn down an opportunity to play in the Championship.

As it stands, Oxford face a big challenge if they want to seal a place in the playoffs as the club currently sit 11th in the standings, nine points adrift of the top six.

It is unlikely that Johnson will find himself in the Championship with Oxford next season, so this could be his only chance to secure a big move.

Hodgson’s England must channel EURO 96 spirit to shine in France

Talk of the EUROs has been at fever pitch for the last week.

EURO 96, that is.

Television, the press and social media all went into nostalgia overdrive as we all looked back fondly on the tournament that brought the fun factor back to supporting England.

As we all know, England hosted it and were cruelly halted by Germany on penalties at the semi-final stage.

Those clips of Paul Gascoigne’s goal, Stuart Pearce celebrating, Gareth Southgate’s penalty and Baddiel & Skinner’s song still set off the butterflies in the stomach as a national reputation for hooliganism and violence was blown away.

But the biggest thing you notice looking back is just how far a little bit of character can take you.

Terry Venables’ Three Lions were panned by the media going into the tournament for a wild night out during their Far East tour.

It featured a number of star players, booze-soaked clothes, a dentist’s chair and a set of debauched photos that set the red-top press on fire.

Alan Shearer had not scored an international goal in two years and England made a rubbish start – but they came through it and took the tournament by storm as our big stars stepped up when it mattered most.

Goal-shy Shearer ended his drought and banged in five to win the Golden Boot. ‘Gazza’ silenced his critics with a wonder goal against Scotland before picking apart Holland’s defence in a 4-1 win that saw us top our group.

And Pearce banished his World Cup Italia ’90 spot-kick miss by hammering in two shootout pens, roaring to the crowd and releasing six years of pent-up frustration.

Then there was boss Venables, an east London wide-boy, respected and loved in equal measure by the group for his ability to have fun, but knuckle down when necessary.

You only have to look at the attendance figures for Wembley friendlies to see the difference the 1996 tournament made and how the effect is still lasting, two decades on.

The six leading up to EURO 96 drew an average gate of just 29,341. In the six after, it was 54,201. Now that same statistic is up to a staggering 71,481.

We might not have won the tournament but, that summer, football definitely came home.

Going into EURO 2016 we have none of the controversy of 20 years ago – yet are we really any better off for it?

Yes, we have an exciting core of uninhibited rookies, but some of the more established players are failing to step up and share the burden of responsibility. We know the side can turn on the style, we saw it in the second half of the 3-2 comeback win in Germany in March.

But lacklustre wins over Turkey, Australia and Portugal have seen turgid and predictable football that is failing to win over the press and is increasingly worrying the fans.

Ross Barkley was once dubbed the new ‘Gazza’ and Everton pal, John Stones, compared to Rio Ferdinand when the duo hit the international scene a few years ago. Both now seem to be drifting aimlessly towards mediocrity.

Raheem Sterling still struggles with his final ball, Liverpool’s Adam Lallana never tests the ‘keeper and rarely plays a killer ball, and you cannot help but feel Jordan Henderson is still playing at half his potential.

In Harry Kane, Jamie Vardy, Daniel Sturridge and Wayne Rooney, England have the attacking talent to be a real threat in France. We know that.

What we do not know is who can unlock the ball and chain weighing them all down.

Talk is turning to injury risks and failing formations as we once again start drifting towards a major tournament, desperately devoid of the fun factor that defined 1996.

Who can lift the group and release the pressure valve to bring them all out of their shells?

It might only take a moment – a flash of skill, a feat of genius, or even just a well-placed wisecrack.

But it can prove to be the platform for a whole tournament and, as we have seen, it can last a generation.
