Lions roar silences Titans

ScorecardLions recovered from their Champions League T20 final defeat in blazing fashion when they beat Titans by 269 runs in the first match of the domestic one-day competition in Centurion. For Titans, it was more heartache. After they lost to Sydney Sixers off the last ball of their CLT20 semi-final, they slumped to the lowest total in a domestic limited-overs competition in South African history. They were bowled out for 60 in response to Lions’ massive 329 for 6 and that, after they put Lions in to bat on a belter.Stephen Cook, who did not take part in the CLT20 but has been in training throughout, led the way with a 122-ball 125. He shared in a 161-run opening partnership with Gulam Bodi, who was the second top run-scorer of the CLT20. The pair out on their runs in 28 overs before Bodi top-edged a sweep shot to square leg off Paul Harris.Quinton de Kock, Grant Mokoena and Neil McKenzie were all dismissed cheaply and Lions had been reined in to 255 for 5 in the 44th over. Jean Symes, who also had a good CLT20 campaign, provided the late burst. His 43 off 27 balls included five fours and two sixes to take Lions over the 300-run mark.Surprisingly, Harris, Ethy Mbhalati and Roelof van der Merwe conceded under six runs an over but Rowan Richards and CJ de Villiers took punishment. Richards was a victim of Cook’s onslaught and conceded 78 while de Villiers bowled his 10 overs for 70.The pitch would have not made Lions’ bowlers think they would get away with an easy outing and they would have been surprised to see that they did. Titans were 34 for 9 in the 16th over and all out inside 19 overs. Titans’ scorecard included four ducks and only two batsmen got into double figures.Hardus Viljoen, who used to open the bowling with Marchant de Lange at Easterns, bowled a blistering spell upfront. With fiery pace in the upper 140kphs, he took 6 for 19 and showed off seam movement. Chris Morris and Ethan O’Reilly didn’t have much to share between them but picked up one and three wickets respectively. David Wiese managed 24 of 26 balls but it will be little consolation for Titans who have now lost three of their last four matches against Lions.

Man Utd’s Odion Ighalo loan signing slammed by Gary Neville

Speaking before Manchester United’s clash with Wolves on late Saturday afternoon, Gary Neville has criticised his former side’s loan signing of Odion Ighalo.

What did he say?

The Red Devils had a particularly hectic deadline day, with reports early on Friday morning suggesting they were interested in securing Bournemouth’s Josh King. However, that move failed to materialise, with attentions then turning to Shanghai Shenua man Ighalo.

The Manchester side eventually got a loan deal over the line before the deadline, but Neville has slammed the club for their lack of planning and decisiveness over the entire situation.

He said (as quoted by Sky Sports): “They just needed a body in that area. Rashford’s going to be out for another couple of months. I can’t let the club off the hook though, unfortunately. Romelu Lukaku told us a couple of weeks ago that he had said he was going to leave last February or March.

“That’s nine months to be able to manoeuvre and get into a position to sign a striker for the club for the long-term. And yet they have ended up desperately doing one on Deadline Day. The fact that the club were in that position, knowing that Sanchez and Lukaku were leaving for many, many months, tells us that Manchester United, at this moment in time, are struggling to navigate through the transfer market smartly.”

Desperation

Whilst United managed to get a striker in through the door before the deadline, as Neville suggests, the whole saga really does reflect poorly on how the club have managed the situation.

Quickfire Quiz: How much do you know about Man Utd’s history in the January transfer window?

Having taken the decision to let Romelu Lukaku go last summer, the Red Devils desperately needed to show a bit more foresight in recognising that they needed to replace the Belgium international. Instead, they are now going to finish this current campaign with Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood and Ighalo as their front-line options.

That simply put, isn’t good enough for a team the calibre of United.

Meanwhile, Man Utd are plotting a £20m summer swoop for this starlet.

Aston Villa must go all in for Brentford’s Maupay

[ad_pod ]

According to The Sun, Aston Villa are preparing to launch a bid for Brentford striker Neal Maupay.

What’s the story?

The Villans are in the market for a striker as Chelsea loanee Tammy Abraham looks set to leave the club in the coming days. The 2-cap England striker must soon make a decision on his future, which could see him either remain at Villa Park or join Premier League side Wolves, as reported by the Express and Star.

Considering Abraham has scored 16 goals in the Championship so far this season, Dean Smith can’t afford to let the forward go without securing a replacement.

Villa won’t have massive transfer funds to play with, but they are a huge club who many would want to play for. This draw could be enough to tempt Maupay to the Midlands in this January transfer window.

One for now and the future

The Frenchman has been in scintillating form for the Bees so far this season, racking up 15 goals and 6 assists in 24 Championship appearances. If he could translate that form to Villa Park then the Villans would stand a great chance of making the play-offs.

The 22-year-old would be an ideal replacement for Abraham and as a permanent signing he would offer Smith’s squad a reliable goalscorer for years to come. With so much of his career ahead of him, those years could be prolific indeed if Maupay reaches his full potential.

What do you think, Villa fans, would Maupay be a good replacement for Abraham?

Leicester City join race for Arsenal target Miguel Almiron

After a poor start to the season, Arsenal have finally hit some form and following their win over Fulham at the weekend, the Gunners have made it nine wins in a row and are two points off the top.

In refreshing news for the Arsenal fans, new signings Matteo Guendouzi, Lucas Torreira and Sokratis Papastathopoulos have all played well while Stephan Lichsteiner and Bernd Leno have also put in some solid performances.

All of Arsenal’s signings have greatly improved the squad but one area that Arsenal failed to strengthen was on the wing, where, as it stands, Arsenal don’t have a legitimate out and out top quality winger.

Recent reports had linked the Gunners with Atlanta United winger, Miguel Almiron but according to Calciomercato, Leicester City will try to scupper Arsenal’s deal for the MLS man in January.

The Breakdown

Since joining the MLS side, Almiron has established himself as one of the better players in the league and is currently enjoying his best season in the MLS. The Paraguayan has so far scored 12 goals and created a further 13 in the league this season.

The 24-year-old is capable of playing on either wing but also through the middle as an attacking midfielder. While his stats are quite impressive, the fact that he’s playing in the MLS which in truth, isn’t a very good league means that Arsenal should be cautious with any potential move.

What is true, however, is that the potential is there and for a reported £15 million, Arsenal wouldn’t exactly be spending a lot of money on a player that could turn out to be a solid addition to the squad.

What do you think Arsenal fans?

Hijack: Chelsea should swoop for Kovacic

According to the Daily Star, reporting via Marca, both Manchester United and Liverpool are considering offering Mateo Kovacic a way out of Real Madrid this summer.

Kovacic has enjoyed a fine summer, having reached the World Cup final with Croatia. However, that success looks to have done nothing to improve the 24-year-old’s chances of establishing himself in the starting XI at the Bernabeu.

With the likes of Toni Kroos, Casemiro, Isco and compatriot, Luka Modric, ahead of him in the queue, a move would be the best thing for Kovacic at this stage of his career.

With the Premier League looking a likely destination, top English clubs should be falling over themselves to land the Real Madrid man.

New Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri has already added Jorginho to his midfield ranks, but more work in the centre of the park needs doing if the Blues are to make themselves title contenders again. The capture of Kovacic would be that extra injection of quality needed at Stamford Bridge.

The Breakdown

With Cesc Fabregas ageing; Tiemoue Bakayoko having flopped in the Premier League so far; Ruben Loftus-Cheek’s future in doubt; and the likes of Danny Drinkwater and Ross Barkley looking a long way from establishing themselves in the first team, Chelsea’s midfield is lacking reliable creative options.

Kovacic would bring extra energy and inventiveness to Stamford Bridge. His attacking instincts would prove vital to Sarri’s team, but the player’s tidiness on the ball and defensive discipline also ensures that he wouldn’t become a burden when his team are under pressure.

Transfermarkt value the Croatian at £27 million, and his signing would represent a smart bit of spending on Chelsea’s part.

HYS: Which formation should Spurs use vs Newcastle?

Tottenham’s 2017/18 Premier League campaign kicks off with a tricky trip to St. James’ Park this weekend, facing a Newcastle side who will be desperate for a strong start to life back in the top flight after gaining promotion from the Championship last season.

But Kieran Trippier’s injury does pose some questions for Mauricio Pochettino to answer pre-kickoff, namely who should replace the right-back in his starting XI and whether his absence means Spurs would be better off utilising 3-4-3 or 4-2-3-1.

The Lilywhites switched between both systems last season to great effect, although they didn’t actually lose a single Premier League fixture when lining up with a back three, suggesting it’s the best setup to get them off to a perfect start this time around.

But, Tottenham fans, how would you line up the Lilywhites for the trip to Tyneside this Sunday? Let us know which formation Pochettino should utilise by voting below…

Season stats for Chelsea’s £70m target Bernardo Silva

Antonio Conte definitely won’t be sitting on his hands in the summer transfer, despite Chelsea’s fantastic season so far, with The Times stating the Blues are prepared to spend a remarkable £70m to bring Bernardo Silva to West London this summer.

French principality side Monaco have impressed this season, currently standing ahead of Paris Saint-Germain at the top of the Ligue 1 table, with Bernardo Silva being a huge reason behind their success.

However, for a fee of £70m, you’d expect Bernardo Silva to have stand-out statistics and it’s fair to say he doesn’t boast them currently.

From 25 appearances in Ligue 1 this season, Bernardo Silva boasts five goals and six assists from his position in attacking midfielder and, whilst those numbers are relatively impressing, they’re not quite enough to warrant such an audacious price-tag.

Silva’s passing accuracy is also average, standing at 80%, whilst he averages just 0.4 aerial duels won a match and 1.7 shots per game. At just 22, he is a fantastic talent but Chelsea’s may be getting ahead of themselves if they part with a club-record fee for his signature.

Liverpool youngster ready to step in with Toure against Arsenal

Liverpool youngster Tiago Ilori has claimed that he’s working hard to make sure he’s ready to step in should Jurgen Klopp need him for Wednesday’s game against Arsenal.

The 22-year-old Portuguese centre-back was re-called from his loan spell at Aston Villa by the Merseysiders last week and made his official debut for the club after just one full training session against Exeter in the 2-2 FA Cup draw in Devon.

Jurgen Klopp was somewhat forced into fielding a team of youth and fringe players given his side’s injury woes, with his centre-back ranks having suffered the most.

Kolo Toure, Mamadou Sakho, Dejan Lovren and Martin Skrtel were all unavailable on Friday night, and although the former is likely be back for the crunch Arsenal game, Ilori may find himself thrust in if Sakho cannot regain fitness.

And speaking to the Liverpool Echo about the possibility of lining up alongside the veteran Ivorian, the former Sporting Lisbon man claimed that he’s doing all he can to be ready to play if needed:

“Obviously, there are some defenders out injured at the moment but I don’t know what the manager will decide, we’ll have to see what happens now,

“I just try to work hard every day. I’ll keep doing my best so that when the opportunities come along I can perform.”

Despite having signed for Liverpool way back in 2013, the Exeter game was Ilori’s competitive debut for the club, and he revealed that it was a proud moment for him:

“I’d waited a long time for that and I loved it,

“It was a dream come true. Hopefully there will be more minutes to come for me in a Liverpool shirt.

“I’m pleased to be back. This is where I feel most comfortable. This is my parent club. I love being here.”
