The domestic Twenty20 winners of West Indies, Sri Lanka and New Zealand, as well as Delhi Daredevils, will also get an opportunity to participate in the inaugural Champions Twenty20 League, to be held from October 8-23 in India, just after the Champions Trophy. Lalit Modi, the tournament’s chairman, said the prize money for the tournament will be US$ 6 million, and the draw will be held in London on June 23 after which the venues will be finalised.Delhi have been included on the basis of having topped the round-robin stage of the 2009 IPL. They will be joined by Deccan Chargers and Royal Challengers Bangalore, the 2009 IPL finalists.Other 2009 domestic finalists and winners include Victoria and New South Wales (Australia), Cape Cobras and Eagles (South Africa), Otago (New Zealand), Trinidad and Tobago (West Indies) and Wayamba (Sri Lanka). England’s Twenty20 Cup only begins on Monday and the finalists will only be decided on August 25.There will be a total of 23 matches and the teams will be divided into four groups of three each to play on a league basis before the top two teams from each group move on to the second stage. The four top teams from there will play the semi-finals.Last year’s IPL finalists Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings will not be eligible. Sialkot Stallions, the winners of Pakistan’s domestic Twenty20 tournament, will not feature as originally scheduled because their government has restricted travel to India.”Unfortunately, the Pakistan government won’t give them clearance to come to India, and since yesterday was out cut-off date, it’s not possible to have a team from Pakistan this year,” said Modi. “Delhi Daredevils this year have highest points from the league. But from next year, the third team from India will be decided from a play-off between the two losing semi-finalists.”Modi also said that players from the unofficial ICL could also represent their domestic teams, provided they resign from the league before May 31. However, if their domestic sides qualify for the Champions League those players will not be allowed to play as part of a “one-year cooling period”.The tournament was initially supposed to held from December 3-11 2008 in Mumbai, Chennai and Bangalore but was put off after the terrorist attacks in Mumbai. The cancellation came as a huge blow for the teams that qualified for the 2008 edition, as they would have received at least US$250,000 as participating fees. Each team gets a minimum guarantee amount for playing in the tournament. On the night of the IPL final in Johannesburg, Modi said on television that the fourth season of the IPL, in 2011, could feature ten teams instead of eight.

Jesus must start for Man City vs Brugge

After securing a 2-0 win over Burnley in their latest Premier League outing, Manchester City are back in European action on Tuesday evening with an away clash against Belgian side Club Brugge on the cards for Pep Guardiola’s side.

Their previous Champions League tie saw them lose 2-0 against Paris Saint-Germain thanks to goals from Idrissa Gana Gueye and Lionel Messi.

On the chalkboard

One player that did not feature in the game against Burnley at the weekend who we feel should be in the starting XI for City against Brugge is Gabriel Jesus.

Jesus was not involved in the game against Burnley due to his involvement with Brazil on international duty just a short period before the match against Sean Dyche’s side.

Now that he should be back and available for the team, we feel that Jesus, who has been labelled as City’s “unsung hero” by Guardiola in the past, should definitely be in the starting XI for the midweek match.

City signed Jesus back in the 2017 summer transfer window from Brazilian club Palmeiras. Since then, the 24-year-old, who is currently valued at £54m according to Transfermarkt, has made a total of 204 appearances for the Manchester club across all competitions in which he has managed to score 85 goals and provide 38 assists in the process.

So far this season, Jesus has made nine appearances for City across all competitions, scoring three goals and providing four assists, proving how much of an important attacking asset he has been for the club, even more so considering he managed to score the winning goal in City’s 1-0 victory over Chelsea, proving himself as a match-winner for the team.

His latest appearance for City in their 2-2 draw against Liverpool saw Jesus pick up an assist and ultimately earn himself a solid match rating of 7.1/10 according to SofaScore.

Looking ahead to the Brugge match, we feel that not only will Jesus give Guardiola the chance to rotate his team and give one of his attacking players that featured against Burnley a rest, but would also give the team a great chance of winning based on the attacking prowess he’s shown so far this season.

Herschelle Gibbs has escaped being charged with drunken driving and has accepted 100 hours of community service as part of an agreement with state prosecutors.Gibbs, who was clearly relieved as he left Cape Town Magistrates Court, was arrested a year ago. He has since attended a rehabilitation centre to try to overcome his drinking issues. His lawyer told reporters the charges were withdrawn following representations made to the court. These included his willingness to become involved in a sporting development programme for children.”Herschelle has undergone rehabilitation and has spent a month in a clinic over Christmas,” his lawyer said. “He’s following that programme very well and he’s agreed to get involved with Brad Bing and Sporting Chance as part of community service over the next few years. Sporting Chance develops youth in sport.”Herschelle gets involved with kids and he’s going to be a great role model.”Gibbs can still be prosecuted for the offence if he fails to adhere to strict conditions imposed by the court.

Pakistan coach fumes at unhelpful pitch

A docile pitch at the National Stadium in Karachi helped turn Pakistan’s first two days of Test cricket in 14 months into an ordeal. It hardly offered any assistance to their pace attack, and Pakistan coach Intikhab Alam said that the track, on which Sri Lanka amassed 644 for 7 declared, was not what the home team had expected.”I am not very happy with the state of the wicket,” Alam said even while admitting the team had performed poorly on the opening day. “I will be very honest with you that we [Pakistan] were not expecting such a wicket. We needed a wicket which had grass and some bounce because we rely on our fast bowlers. The curator was told that we needed such a wicket but unfortunately it was not made.”Alam declined to comment on whether the curator, former Test player Agha Zahid, should be sacked, but said the use of the centre square for domestic games would have hampered preparations. “I’m sure some discussion will be held on this and what should be done for the future. Wherever you go in the world they don’t touch the centre wicket – it’s especially reserved for Test matches. They play on the side wickets, but here the problem is that the sponsor wants to play on the centre wicket because they want to televise the [domestic] matches.”Pakistan leaked 406 runs on the first day, and Alam admitted the team had erred by not plugging the third-man region, an area where Mahela Jayawardene and Thilan Samaraweera scored easy runs. “After every day’s play we discuss the performance and yesterday we analysed that we should not have given them free runs,” he said. “We positioned a third man from the start of the second day and also a sweeper to make sure that they do not score quickly.” Alam said the matter had been discussed with captain Younis Khan, whose positive approach did not pay off on the opening day. With both Muttiah Muralitharan and Ajantha Mendis posing a threat to the batsmen during their short spells on Sunday, Pakistan face a tough challenge to match Sri Lanka’s total. “Pressure is always there on a professional player,” Alam said. “Our strategy is that a batsman who walks in should stay at the wicket and with right shot selection, big partnerships can be forged,” he said. “I don’t see anything unusual in the wicket.”Pakistan’s lone specialist spinner, Danish Kaneria, was largely inconsistent, and conceded 170 runs off 46.2 overs for his three wickets. It was the 33rd time he had given over a 100 runs in an innings – this being his 94th innings. “I did talk to him and if you see his performance today, his line was much better,” Alam said. “He was playing after a long time [it was Kaneria’s first international game since December 2007].”I was not very happy or satisfied with our bowling attack. We bowled either too full or too short. The wicket was a type on which we should have bowled a bit short of a length. Today the bowlers’ line and length was very good and at one stage they had scored 19 runs in the first 15 overs. The idea was to frustrate them and not let them score quickly.”The worst of the bowlers, though, was debutant Sohail Khan, who was taken for 131 off 21 overs: an economy-rate of 6.23. Sohail was picked ahead of 20-year-old Mohammad Talha, who had impressed in recent domestic games. “Our consensus was that he had more experience than Talha and had been playing domestic cricket for quite sometime,” Alam said. “He had taken a good number of wickets in domestic cricket at these very same venues. Unfortunately two catches were dropped off his bowling but it’s a part of the game.”

Ronaldo available for Newcastle clash

Manchester United will be able to call upon the services of new signing Cristiano Ronaldo when they take on Newcastle United next weekend.

The Red Devils will be hoping to maintain their unbeaten start to the new campaign when Steve Bruce’s charges visit Old Trafford next Saturday, and Ronaldo’s availability should certainly aid them in their mission to do just that.

What’s the word?

After picking up a yellow card for removing his shirt while celebrating his record-breaking winner in Portugal’s 2-1 victory over the Republic of Ireland in midweek, the 36-year-old is suspended for his nation’s encounter with Azerbaijan on Tuesday.

As a result, Portugal head coach Fernando Santos released the player on Thursday in order to help him accelerate his move to United, freeing him up to return to England earlier than initially expected.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side applied for an “elite sport exemption” on Ronaldo’s behalf but the government rejected it, according to The Times, so he will have to isolate for five days and return a negative virus test before being allowed out of quarantine.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner was greeted by former team-mate turned technical director Darren Fletcher at Manchester Airport on Friday, allowing him plenty of time to train with his new team-mates before their next fixture.

Solskjaer will be absolutely delighted

News that Ronaldo should be available to face Newcastle for his second Old Trafford debut will leave Solskjaer feeling absolutely delighted.

Despite United picking up seven points from a possible nine in the opening weeks of the new Premier League season, the addition of a legendary striker who has scored 674 clubs goals in 895 appearances will always be welcomed.

Solskjaer’s biggest decision may be who partners Ronaldo in attack. Mason Greenwood has done a fabulous job leading the line so far, scoring three goals in as many top-flight games, so he’s likely to keep his place in the starting XI.

That could see Jadon Sancho sacrificed after his underwhelming performance against Wolves last time out, although he’ll be hoping to bounce back with a positive display next time out.

Hatfield: Wolves could be busy in January transfer window

Express and Star journalist Luke Hatfield thinks that Wolves could be busy in the January transfer window having endured a disappointing deadline day in which they failed to complete deals for Renato Sanches, Boubacar Kamara or Kieffer Moore.

Bruno Lage make six summer signings, with Hee Chan Hwang, Jose Sa, Rayan Ait-Nouri, Yerson Mosquera, Louie Moulden and Francisco Trincao all signing deals at Molineux.

Wolves have had a tough start to the new Premier League campaign as they have lost all three of their opening games by a single goal to nil. Whilst they haven’t registered a point on the board as of yet, the performances have been good and in their most recent match against Manchester United, they were unfortunate not to take at least a point against the Red Devils.

Whilst they were active in the summer window, Hatfield believes that Wolves could be busy in the January window also, telling Football FanCast: “January is always the hardest window to shop in. Clubs don’t want to let players go in the middle of the season, you’ve got to have players who are going to hit the ground running, so it’s a tricky window to operate in.

“Wolves could well be busy in it, but of course it depends on how their start to the season goes. If they have a fantastic start and they find themselves in the top half of the table, maybe challenging for the Europa League places, maybe they’ll think they’re happy with what they’ve got. But equally if they have a poor start to the season, it could spur them into action.”

Wolves manger Bruno Lage will be hoping that his side gels quickly and that they can improve on last season’s 13th place finish in the Premier League table under Nuno Santo.
