Rangers team news vs Motherwell

Renowned Glasgow Rangers podcasters Heart & Hand have been left reacting to some injury news that has now emerged on Kemar Roofe.

The Lowdown: Team news

Speaking in his pre-game press conference ahead of the match, Giovanni van Bronckhorst revealed that Aaron Ramsey has been ruled out for the next few games through injury, but should be back for their home leg against RB Leipzig in the UEFA Europa League semi-final.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/rangers-news-3/” title=”Rangers news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Dutch manager confirmed that they also have a ‘problem’ with Roofe after he injured his knee last time out, and the club now hope that he too will return for the home leg.

The Latest: Podcasters react

Taking to Twitter, Heart & Hand gave their immediate reaction to the news on Roofe, claiming that it is a ‘huge blow’ for the Ibrox faithful:

“Huge blow losing Roofe but it is what is. Fingers crossed he’s back for 2nd leg.”

The Verdict: Not ideal

It is certainly not ideal to be losing Roofe for the next few matches, especially given that Alfredo Morelos is already out.

The striker has come off the back of four goals and two assists in his last three appearances in all competitions, including a hat-trick away at St. Mirren last time out in the Scottish Premiership (Transfermarkt).

He has made an impact not just in the SPFL, but the Europa League and Scottish Cup as well, and has certainly stepped up to the plate in Morelos’ absence.

Nonetheless, his injury now leaves the Teddy Bears a little light up top.

Spurs must start Reguilon against Villa

Tottenham Hotspur are gaining momentum in the race to finish in the top four of the Premier League this season, and Antonio Conte will no doubt fancy his team’s chances of doing so.

The north Londoners take on Aston Villa at Villa Park on Saturday evening, and while the Italian may be reluctant to make too many changes, if indeed any, he may consider bringing in Sergio Reguilon to offer a more natural balance on the left-hand side.

The Spaniard’s absence saw Matt Doherty operate on that flank in the 5-1 win over Newcastle United last week, with Emerson Royal playing on the right as the duo both ended up on the scoresheet in a comprehensive performance.

However, Conte offered a very encouraging update on Reguilon ahead of Spurs’ game against Villa on Saturday.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-spurs-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-martinez-dybala-spence-conte-2” title= “Read the latest Spurs news!”]

Speaking in his pre-match press conference, the 52-year-old said: “No new injuries, two good news because Ryan Sessegnon and Sergio Reguilon they had the training session with us.”

The Spaniard had been a permanent fixture in Tottenham’s line-up for the majority of the Premier League season, playing 23 matches in the top flight, scoring two goals and providing three assists in that time, even coming off the bench to find the net against Everton recently.

The 25-year-old’s ability to get forward is something that Conte has actively encouraged, with the left-back talking about the kind of job that the Spurs boss wants him to do.

Reguilon said: “I’ve never played five at the back before. I have to learn quickly. The gaffer has told me he wants me to be solid in defence but at the same moment I have to arrive in the box, help the strikers, score goals, give assists. Now I have more of a chance to score goals and give assists. So let’s work.”

Hailed as a “complete player” by his former Sevilla boss Julen Lopetegui, the Spaniard’s return could leave Villa’s defence terrified, particularly with his pace to get in behind. Steven Gerrard’s side are in a bad run of form lately with three defeats on the spin, and they won’t fancy coming up against a speedster like Reguilon who is constantly trying to maraud forward.

Restoring the £80k-per-week earner to the Spurs starting XI could be an inspired change by Conte this weekend.

NUFC: Target makes key decision on move

A major update has emerged on Newcastle United’s pursuit of Manchester United’s Donny van de Beek…

What’s the talk?

According to The Telegraph, the Magpies made contact with the midfielder to speak about a potential loan deal and were met with a firm decision in response – no.

The report claims that he told the club that he does not want to arrive at St. James’ Park on loan and part of his reasoning is their battle against relegation at the bottom of the table.

Gutted

Nick Hammond is facing his first blunder of the January transfer window for Newcastle by missing out on a deal to sign van de Beek as fans will be left gutted.

The report indicates that discussions were had between the two parties leading up to the player’s final decision and this suggests that the transfer chief did not do enough to convince him.

Newcastle’s pitch was not tantalising enough to tempt the Dutchman into ditching Old Trafford to join the Magpies and this could be an error as he could have been an excellent addition to the squad. Although he has struggled for game time at Manchester United, he has previously proven his quality for Ajax in the Eredivisie and the Champions League.

Back in 2020, Scott McTominay praised his character and believed that his game time would increase. He told Sky Sports:

“Donny van de Beek is a great lad and a brilliant football player. I’m sure, the way he is working in training and how hard he’s working, his time will definitely come to get more minutes on the pitch.”

However, that has not been the case and he has played 69 minutes of Premier League football for the Red Devils this season. This comes after he made 19 appearances last term, four starts, and played 515 minutes in the English top-flight.

In the 2018/19 campaign, he produced 12 goals and 12 assists from midfield in the Eredivisie and Champions League combined. He averaged a WhoScored rating of 7.16 across 12 matches in the latter, showing that he can produce quality displays on a regular basis at the top level, which is why Newcastle fans will be gutted that he has decided not to join the club.

It is now down to Hammond, Eddie Howe and PIF to either change his mind and seal a transfer or identify alternative targets who can come in and have an impact on the side.

Benitez’s feelings on Everton fans revealed

Former Everton manager Rafael Benitez believes ‘some players are scared’ of the club’s fans, The Athletic’s Gregg O’Keeffe has reported.

The lowdown

The Spaniard was sacked at the weekend following Everton’s 2-1 defeat at Norwich City, who are in the Premier League relegation zone.

The former Liverpool boss, who was only appointed at Goodison Park in July, oversaw just 22 games – seven wins (32%), four draws and 11 defeats.

Since they beat Burnley 3-1 in their fourth game of the season, Everton are bottom of the Premier League form table with only nine points from a possible 45 in that time (via Transfermarkt).

The latest

As per The Athletic, O’Keeffe wrote that, in Benitez’s eyes, some members of the team ‘buckle under the expectations of the fanbase’. The journalist added in a tweet accompanying that article that “Benitez felt Moshiri listened too much to agents”.

The Spaniard is said to be surprised by the timing of his dismissal, which came ‘just days’ after he was backed in his decision to sell Lucas Digne to Aston Villa.

The verdict

It was clear that Benitez’s tenure couldn’t go on. During Saturday’s defeat at Carrow Road, an incensed Everton supporter even tried to run across the pitch to confront him in the dugout

However, prior to last weekend, he seemed to have Moshiri’s full support. The Iranian had just last month claimed that Everton’s struggles were ‘largely’ down to injuries and insisted that Benitez would be supported in the transfer market.

Whoever’s to blame for things unravelling, the Toffees find themselves looking for a seventh different manager in less than six years. That suggests that there are some deep-rooted issues to be resolved at Goodison Park.

Prior hundred rescues Sussex

Matt Prior scored his first hundred for over a year in front of England captain Andrew Strauss and national selector James Whitaker to hold Sussex’s batting together on day one of their County Championship clash with Middlesex at Hove

ScorecardMatt Prior’s dazzling hundred held Sussex’s innings together•Getty ImagesMatt Prior scored his first hundred for over a year in front of England captain Andrew Strauss and national selector James Whitaker to hold Sussex’s batting together on day one of their County Championship clash with Middlesex at Hove. The 26-year-old’s unbeaten 123 came in a disappointing total of 217 as the second division leaders’ decision to bat first on a well-grassed pitch was undermined by some consistently probing Middlesex seam bowling.Prior gave one difficult chance on 15 when Scott Newman dropped him running in from the backward-point boundary, but otherwise he played with his customary freedom – particularly through the off-side – as he struck 15 boundaries from 149 balls faced in 222 minutes.Prior looked like he might miss out on what was his 21st first-class hundred when Sussex slumped to 166 for 8, but Monty Panesar, another player looking to impress Strauss, helped him add 46 for the ninth wicket – of which he contributed seven. But while Prior prospered once he had got established, batting was a desperate struggle for his team-mates – none of whom managed more than skipper Murray Goodwin’s 17. The pair added 62 for the fourth wicket after Tim Murtagh had picked up two wickets with his new ball outswingers and Joe Gatting had lost his off stump to Gareth Berg to leave the leaders reeling on 28 for 3.Goodwin was looking the part when he chased a wide one from Murtagh and was well taken low down by Strauss at slip. Sussex’s middle order offered little support to Prior with Andrew Hodd falling for nine to former team-mate Tom Smith. The left-arm spinner, who left Hove to join Middlesex in the winter, beat him in the flight in his fourth over to claim the first Championship wicket of his career.James Anyon sacrificed his wicket after a mix-up with Prior ended with both men at the same end and Berg wrapped up the innings with two wickets in three overs. Middlesex’s batsmen found the going just as difficult and Strauss’ poor early-season form continued when he fell for 13.Nine championship innings have yielded 226 runs for Strauss, who had just played the shot of the day – a straight drive off Rana Naved – when he gloved an attempted pull off the next delivery and was caught by Prior, keeping wicket for the first time this season ahead of the start of the Test series against Bangladesh in three weeks. After a brief stoppage for bad light, Middlesex were plunged into more trouble when Corey Collymore had Newman caught behind before pinning Dawid Malan for a second-ball duck. Another stoppage ended play 11 overs early with Middlesex 46 for 3 and much depending on Owais Shah, who finished unbeaten on nine.

West Ham: Masuaku letting Moyes down

West Ham United are currently in the middle of a quite wonderful season.

A trophy might not be on the horizon for David Moyes’ side but they have made enormous progression under the Scot who has steered them to a top-five position.

A defeat to Arsenal ensured they slipped out of the top four over Christmas but judging by the club’s wretched injury crisis, they have done well to even remain in the conversation for Champions League football.

The Hammers are currently without the likes Kurt Zouma and Angelo Ogbonna while Aaron Cresswell has had his issues too.

The left-back’s absence from the Irons squad has opened up a space in the team that Arthur Masuaku has grasped with both hands, at least until now.

He scored a fluke goal against Chelsea a few weeks back but on Thursday night vs Spurs, demonstrated why he’s such an expendable asset for Moyes.

During that context, Masuaku struggled significantly, so much so that he was described as “terrible” by one Irons analysis account on social media.

Indeed, it’s simple to see why that’s the case as the raw stats don’t paint him in a very pleasing light.

As the Hammers crashed out of the Carabao Cup to Antonio Conte’s team, it was Masuaku who let them down during the 2-1 loss to Tottenham.

Clashes between these two sides should be a meaningful derby but it was understandable that as we drove closer to Christmas, the match was going to have less riding on it than normal.

Despite that, Masuaku very much showed that if a certain Santa Claus was a West Ham fan, very few presents would be coming his way.

During the contest, the full-back was extremely poor in possession, surrendering the ball on no fewer than 23 occasions.

Someone with his offensive threat will always lose the ball more often but it was a concern that he performed very few positive actions in the game, completing just 50% of his dribbles and failing with an enormous eight crosses – a failure rate of 88.9%.

Furthermore, Masuaku was only successful in winning 2/5 of his aerial contests.

All of that saw the defender somehow still earn a respectable SofaScore rating of 7.1, worse than Nikola Vlasic whose uninspiring time at the London Stadium was summed up this week.

He claimed an assist for Jarrod Bowen’s strike but that came from the attacker’s scuffed shot, rather than trying anything productive for his teammates.

As such, it would be a wise idea for Moyes and his coaching staff to not only axe Vlasic from the team, but immediately jettison the club’s stand-in left-back too.

Cresswell cannot return soon enough.

Cricket Canada insists it will be ready to host 2012 Under-19 World Cup

With the Under-19 World Cup reaching its climax, Ranjit Saini, Cricket Canada’s interim president, has insisted his country will be ready to host the 2012 edition, despite concerns the country does not have the necessary 12 grounds demanded by the ICC.In 2009 Kenya were controversially stripped of hosting rights to the 2010 Under-19 World Cup after the ICC claimed its grounds would not be ready in time. The decision caused anger in Kenya and claims the move owed more to commercial pressures than logistical ones.At the moment Canada could face similar treatment, but Saini said that redevelopment will take place in time. “We have the necessary 12 grounds, but some need upgrading and we will be approaching the government for a grant. This will deliver the infrastructure upgrade that Canadian cricket needs. The city of Toronto has accepted it so we’re confident. I think we have a good chance.”

Siddle missed the final West Indies game in Perth with a nagging hamstring complaint but has been picked in the Boxing Day squad. However, his last hurdle before the MCG is a 50-over game at the SCG as the defending champions aim to shift from fourth place. “The funny thing was I was actually better before the Perth Test than I was in Adelaide, so it’s not as big a deal as everyone thinks,” Siddle said in Melbourne.”I’ve had a couple of bowls the past two days and I had a good hit-out yesterday in the middle of one of the district grounds and it’s come up fine. I don’t feel any different to when I was bowling a few months ago. It’s feeling ready and I’m feeling confident.”Siddle was pleased to be able to test the problem before he ran into Pakistan. “I’ve got to get through this game with no worries and I am confident of doing that,” Siddle said. “Hopefully I get my spot back now and get back in there.”He comes into the squad for Rob Cassell while another boost for the Bushrangers is the fitness of Brad Hodge, who had to pull out of what was meant to be his final Sheffield Shield appearance with a knee injury.New South Wales have called in Dominic Thornely for the encounter after losing Phillip Hughes to the Australia squad. WBA interested in signing Jamie Paterson

There is no doubt that West Brom and Valerien Ismael will be looking to add quality to their team in the January transfer window, as they endeavour on a battle in the second half of the season to climb into one of the automatic promotion spots.

Although Albion are maintaining their ability to dominate inside the Championship as they currently sit fourth in the table, their lack of goals and poor finishing is costing them valuable points and catching up on them in the league table.

They go into their game on Saturday having not won in their last four fixtures, scoring once almost a month ago against Middlesbrough.

This lack of firepower has added huge speculation surrounding West Brom, the January transfer window and which forwards they could attract to join the club and save their season before they fall any further.

What’s the word?

According to the Daily Mail, Jamie Paterson has now had his name thrown into the mix of strikers, wingers and forwards on the Baggies’ list of potential signings.

Paterson has also only signed a one year contract with Swansea this season, so West Brom could also get the player at a cut price in the January transfer window, which will surely only add to the attraction to snap up the forward.

Saving their season

The 29-year-old is currently at Swansea, after moving to the Welsh side from Bristol City and has been performing impressively in his time with the team, scoring eight goals and registering four assists in 20 appearances so far this season.

Because of that, he’s earned rave reviews, particularly from a former teammate in Lloyd Kelly who said:

“He’s got the quality of a top player.”

“And obviously the form that he’s in at the moment is good for him.”

Paterson is definitely proving he has the ability to finish and also assist his teammates with his current 12 involvements making him an ideal fit for West Brom due to their current goal drought and complete lack of finishing. For example, they’ve had a shocking 61 shots and 0 goals in their last three games.

Consequently, the striker could definitely be somebody who saves their season and pushes them towards promotion.

It isn’t certain what the exact plans are for West Brom going forward, and if they will add players to their squad in the upcoming transfer window at all remains to be seen. However, Ismael will have to inject something into Albion, to get the side back into contention for promotion.

West Brom face sixth-placed Coventry City at the weekend and will be desperate to take three points from the game, as a loss could see them fall further down the Championship table to as low as seventh.

In other news: Valerien Ismael could be sacked before Christmas
