The 31-year-old frontman is no stranger to facial hair, but he can usually be seen sporting a bushy beard. Palmer has altered his appearance slightly in order to aid the charitable Movember cause – which seeks to raise awareness of men’s health issues.

Palmer is not particularly pleased with the progress he has made on his top lip so far, in what is a considerable image change for him, but time is still on his side when it comes to producing something slightly more flamboyant.

WHAT THEY SAID

The Red Dragons star has said when asked about his moustache-growing efforts: “How’s it going for me? Terribly. I look horrendous! But it’s worth it. It’s all for a great cause and trying to raise as much money. It’s not just me, there are six or seven other lads – players and staff – involved.”

Palmer, who starred alongside top scorer Paul Mullin last season as Wrexham secured a record-breaking promotion back to the Football League, has registered five goals through 21 appearances in all competitions this term – helping Phil Parkinson’s side up to second place in the League Two table as co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney are given plenty to get excited about.

Lionel Messi and David Beckham: The superstar bromance that has transformed Inter Miami into a MLS superpower overnight

The seven-time Ballon d'Or winner has made a dream start to life in Florida with the help of a guiding hand from a Manchester United legend

Lionel Messi is the new face of MLS. That was always going to be the case when he confirmed Inter Miami as his next destination after leaving Paris Saint-Germain, but he showed the move is not just a marketing stunt in his first two competitive outings for his new club.

Messi marked his debut in a Leagues Cup clash with Cruz Azul by scoring a trademark 94th-minute free-kick to snap Miami's 11-match winless streak, and followed that memorable introduction up with a stunning brace in a 4-0 rout against Atlanta United. Messi fever has taken hold in America, and no one is enjoying it more than Miami co-owner David Beckham.

When Miami were awarded a MLS expansion spot in 2018, Beckham pledged to build the best team in the competition, before adding: "I think Miami needs a star. You have to realise the audience we have and Miami would expect us to bring in a star. That’s what we plan on doing."

At the time, Messi was still very much a one-club man lighting up European football at Barcelona. But Miami stepped up an ambitious bid to make him their 'star' man when his happy marriage with the Blaugrana began to turn sour in 2020.

"I spent three years. A year and a half, very intensely," Miami's managing owner Jorge Mas recently told when quizzed on negotiations with Messi. "I saw it done at the end of May. Beckham talked with Leo, only about football issues, because he was playing. I didn't want him to feel pressured. We've talked in Barcelona, Miami, Rosario, Doha… I spent the entire World Cup in Qatar, watching Argentina."

MLS commissioner Don Garber has added on Beckham's role in the deal: "It’s just not often that things align, and you deliver on the things you say you’re going to deliver. I think that’s cool. David is a special guy. People don’t understand how smart David Beckham is, how thoughtful he is and how hard-working he is."

It's safe to say that Messi would not be in MLS right now if it wasn't for Beckham. And his blossoming friendship with the Argentine great is also bringing joy to supporters across the United States and beyond.

Getty'Dream come true'

Beckham initially paved the way for an influx of top players to MLS when he joined the LA Galaxy after leaving Real Madrid in 2007. It was written into Beckham's contract that he could purchase a franchise for just $25 million, and he exercised that option in 2014 to create Inter Miami.

It was the former England international who shined a spotlight on the potential of soccer in the United States and MLS as a global brand. And the early signs certainly indicate that Messi is capable of fully realising it.

The World Cup winner's unveiling at DRV PNK Stadium was a glitzy affair that saw 21,000 people pack in to watch him being presented with his new No.10 shirt. The event was delayed by a thunderstorm, with Miami chief Mas describing the downpour as "holy water" when eventually accompanying Messi to his specially made stage in the middle of the pitch alongside his brother Jose and Beckham.

Messi's delight was written all over his face and he warmly embraced Beckham, who was visibly emotional when addressing the crowd. "It's a dream come true," he said. "Leo, we are so proud that you have chosen our club for the next stage in your career."

Miami would later release images of Messi's official contract signing in the club's offices, with Beckham watching on next to him like a proud father. The Manchester United legend enjoyed a stellar playing career himself, but seems to be getting just as much joy out of seeing his vision for Miami come to fruition after so many years of hard work.

Beckham said in a recent interview with : "I never thought I would have the same feeling as an owner as I had when I was a player. When I got the phone call [to say Messi had chosen Miami], I had the feeling I had when I walked out at Old Trafford or Wembley. I was like, ‘We’ve just beaten all competition to sign the greatest player to ever play our game’."

AdvertisementGetty10 years in the making

In the same interview, Beckham also revealed that Messi was in his thoughts right from the beginning of his journey in Miami. “It all came from a conversation over a glass of wine at dinner," he said. " I turn to Jorge and say, ‘One day, we need Messi to come to our club’. It was probably when we first met. I actually found on my phone the other day one of the first presentations that (advertising agency) Doubleday & Cartwright did — they mocked up one of the jerseys with the logo on and Leo was wearing it. That was 10 years ago.

"So it was always in my mind. I suppose every owner of a sports franchise thinks, ‘We want to bring the best players to our club’. Does it happen for everyone? Of course not. But we were sat at dinner and we were like, ‘OK, if we could bring Leo for our market, for our fans, for this part of the world, there’s no one better’.”

Even before Inter Miami had played their first MLS game, Messi was on the agenda. In September 2019, Beckham and Mas travelled to Barcelona for a meeting that would pave the way for Messi's eventual arrival in the U.S.

“We got on a plane and flew to Barcelona from London secretly,” said Beckham. “We snuck into a hotel, met Jorge Messi (Lionel’s father and also his agent) and started the conversation. It purely went, ‘We would love your son to play for our team one day. We know he can’t come yet, but one day we would love to have Leo in Miami’.

“Then obviously Jorge (Mas) did an incredible job creating a narrative around what he could do for the sport in this country, what he could do for MLS and what he could do for Inter Miami.”

Tears after Cruz Azul debut

Inter Miami earmarked a July 21 date against Cruz Azul for Messi's debut long before he touched down in the U.S., and Beckham played his part in drumming up anticipation for the game. "We don't know if Leo is going to play the game or if he will have minutes, because I think that, after all, he needs to be ready," the Englishman said to . "We have to protect him and make sure that he is ready, because he has been on vacation and has just arrived in Miami."

New Miami boss Gerardo 'Tata' Martino, who previously worked with Messi during spells in charge of Barcelona and Argentina, ended up introducing Messi as a 54th-minute substitute – but it felt like a pre-planned move designed to invite a rapturous ovation from the capacity crowd.

It certainly had the desired effect anyway, and Messi got himself straight into the thick of the action with the home fans willing him to produce a moment of magic whenever he got on the ball. Despite Messi's best efforts, Cruz Azul managed to keep Miami at bay and the game looked destined for a draw – until the 36-year-old won a free-kick on the edge of the box in stoppage-time.

Messi is well past his prime now, but he remains peerless when it comes to dead-ball execution, and he showed it again with the whole world watching, curling a beautiful effort into the top left-hand corner of the net.

A number of celebrity figures in the stands rose to their feet in awe, including tennis legend Serena Williams, but it was Beckham's reaction that really caught the eye. After sharing a hug with his wife Victoria, Beckham was seen with tears in eyes, and he had to take a deep breath to compose himself.

"As soon as I saw the free-kick given I thought this is the way it's meant to end," the 48-year-old told reporters after the game. "It's so exciting tonight for our fans. All of these people that have come down here to see Leo just step on the pitch, let alone just do what he's done. It's a dream come true for everybody in this stadium and everybody around this country to see Leo step into the MLS and perform, and I don't have many words for that."

Getty ImagesThe power of Thor

Anthony Hopkins' line reading as Odin holding Mjolnir in the 2011 blockbuster 'Thor' is iconic to a certain generation of Marvel fans, not least because it set up one of the most famous scenes in the entire franchise.

When audiences saw Captain America catch Mjolnir in 'Avengers: Endgame' for the first time some eight years later, they cried tears of joy and cheered in unison, as it was finally proven that the power of the hammer did not belong exclusively to Thor.

Messi's eldest son, Thiago, just so happens to be a Marvel fanatic, and his favourite character is the God of Thunder. Miami boss Martino handed Messi his first start for the club against Atlanta United on July 26, and after breaking the deadlock just eight minutes in, the diminutive forward pulled out a Thor-inspired celebration for Thiago and his other two sons, Ciro and Mateo, as they sat pitchside.

If ever there was a footballer worthy of Thor's hammer, it's Messi, and his gesture to summon Mjolnir aptly captured the magic of his immediate impact at DRV PNK Stadium. There was, however, some initial confusion over the meaning of the celebration.

Beckham was sitting close to Messi's family and also had a huge smile on his face as the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner raised his hand. It was suggested on social media that Messi was simulating a 'hold my beer' signal for Beckham, as a tongue-in-cheek way of acknowledging his own brilliance.

However, Messi's wife, Antonela Roccuzzo, later took to social media to set the record straight. She posted an image of Messi performing the celebration with an emoji of Mjolnir and the amusing caption "Thorsday".

So as it turns out, Messi and Beckham did not have their own private celebration organized ahead of time. But the Miami chief reacted with the same child-like exuberance as Messi's sons, which just goes to show how much he has grown to love MLS' new poster boy.

É possível contratar outros atletas no decorrer do ano. Trabalhamos, como dissemos no ano passado, utilizando garotos da base, a saída de alguns, permanência da base do time e contratações pontuais. Há expectativa de que, até a metade do ano, tenha mais um, talvez dois nomes – indicou o presidente.

M Ashwin has the tools to be a good spinner – R Ashwin

Rising Pune Supergiants offspinner R Ashwin has said that his team-mate M Ashwin, a legspinner, has the tools to become a good bowler, and praised him for turning the ball in the Twenty20 format

Rising Pune Supergiants offspinner R Ashwin has said that his team-mate M Ashwin, a legspinner, has the tools to become a good bowler, and praised him for turning the ball in the Twenty20 format.”He’s got all the tools, the most important thing for a spinner in the modern era is to spin the ball. Most of the spinners don’t do it in this era and I don’t blame them for it because of the format they play in,” R Ashwin told in an interview along with M Ashwin. “I’m sure getting hit in this format, getting hit in this in tournament, getting his wickets, the whole learning curve is going to be important for him so I feel it’s a great platform for him.”This is not M Ashwin’s first IPL experience; the 25-year-old was a net bowler with Chennai Super Kings last year. R Ashwin, who was a part of Super Kings from 2008 till their suspension in 2015, was impressed with M Ashwin even then and remembered how his googly troubled the Super Kings batsmen.”At CSK he bowled to all batsmen and all of them really struggled against him,” R Ashwin said. “They couldn’t pick his googly and couldn’t hit him out for a single six, so those are all positives to me. In fact we wanted to pick him last year itself but somewhere or the other they left him out.”When asked about his sharp googly, M Ashwin said it was something he had not worked on much. “It comes naturally to me because I am an open-chested bowler and it’s something I’ve had since childhood. I’ve never really worked on it.” He also said that having a more experienced bowler like R Ashwin in the side helped him understand how to bowl on different pitches.M Ashwin made his first-class debut for Tamil Nadu in 2012, and was handed his cap by R Ashwin. The legspinner did not get to bowl on debut in the rain-marred match, and was soon dropped.”He had his first bowl for Tamil Nadu in the next game [after his debut] and I don’t think he went very well, after which he was dropped,” R Ashwin said of M Ashwin. “Different people perceive bowlers differently and it’s very difficult to spot bowlers, but he looked like someone who has good revs. He spins the ball a mile – both inwards and outwards – that is a trait that is inborn and you have to look for such traits.”Speaking about his own role at a new franchise, R Ashwin said that he still did not know what exactly his role was. In 11 T20s since the Asia Cup, R Ashwin has bowled his full quota of overs only five times, and he played all those matches under MS Dhoni’s captaincy. In the five IPL matches this season, R Ashwin has bowled four overs in a match three times.”The role I’m playing at Supergiants is pretty different and it’s pretty unique. We’re still gelling into the team and I’m still finding my own feet in this team because I don’t know what role I’m exactly playing so I’m just feeling into it. It’s common when a franchise starts off new,” he said. “I have gone out bowling my legspin a lot, I thought I should be using it this IPL. I don’t know…the time might come where I will use it. I keep seeing him [M Ashwin] and the way he loads and try and ask him a few questions.”Apart from sharing their names and first-class and IPL dressing rooms, R Ashwin revealed he and M Ashwin, who is four years younger, had studied at the same college – Sri Sivasubramaniya Nadar College of Engineering in Chennai – though their time there did not overlap.

No boot camp for Footitt

Stuart Broad has predicted that Mark Footitt, England’s surprise pick for the pre-Ashes camp, will be a serious contender for the Investec Ashes against Australia and suggested that when he gets to Spain he will at least be spared some of the boot camp rigours of previous vintage. To prepare for previous Ashes series, Andy Flower, the former team director, preferred outward bound style experiences designed to build unity through shared hardship or visits to battle fields and concentration camps intended to bring a sense of perspective to young minds. The trip arranged in 2010-11 was organised by the ECB’s security adviser, Reg Dickason, and came under the auspices of the Australian police force. James Anderson and Chris Tremlett, two England fast bowlers, suffered rib injuries in boxing matches. Minor misdemeanours were punished by hundreds of press-ups.Graeme Swann wrote in his autobiography that he hated every minute of it and joked: “I would gladly be England cricket’s first conscientious objector.”Broad expects England’s introduction to Trevor Bayliss to be more cricket orientated. “I think it’s going to be a planning trip, the guys getting together and talking about how we want to play our cricket, how we want to beat Australia, the coach having his ideas.”I’m sure there’ll be some bowling over there, some fitness, fielding etc. It’s only a three-day camp, so we haven’t got time for everything but I don’t think we’ll be in tents and at 3am holding bricks above our heads.”Footitt, Derbyshire’s left-arm pace bowler, a rare commodity in English cricket unlike their rivals Australia, took the most wickets overall in domestic cricket in 2014.Stuart Broad played against Mark Footitt when the two were coming through age-group cricket•Getty Images

“Footitt’s had a fantastic year and a half: left-armer, slightly different, swings it,” Broad said. “He’s consistently put his name in the hat really. He trained with us at Lord’s before the first Test of the summer and was impressive in the nets.”We’ve got 14-15 guys who could potentially play in the Investec Ashes and it’s important everyone is on fire in knowing the way the team want to play, knowing the plans and knowing the new coach as well.”I think he’s been included because he’s taken a load of wickets in county cricket. I think it’s exciting, it shows that if you perform in county cricket you do get recognition. He’s taken a lot of Division Two wickets at a really good average and he’ll want to test himself at the top level.”I’ve played a lot against Footy, we were the same age group growing up and he’s done incredibly well since he’s gone to Derbyshire. He’ll be excited to hopefully get an opportunity but of course he will be bowling at the guys as a left-arm option. There are not that many left-armers in England so it will be great to see what he can do.”

Handscomb hundred keeps Victoria on top

Victoria started the morning at 1 for 201 and by stumps they were 5 for 521, with Handscomb on 100 and Daniel Christian on 64, and their advantage over South Australia was 90 runs.Handscomb brought up his hundred in the final over of the day off Gary Putland and it continued a strong start to the summer for him – his Shield scores this season have been 108 not out, 96, 10 and now 100 not out. Christian will begin the fourth day hoping to become the third centurion in Victoria’s innings, after opener Chris Rogers began with 107.Rogers added only three to his overnight score before he was caught off the bowling of Joe Mennie, but his century should have erased any doubts over his place in the Test side ahead of the series against India. Mennie followed in his next over by having Cameron White caught and bowled for 8, but South Australia managed only two more wickets for the rest of the day.By stumps, six Victorians had scored made half-centuries or better, and Marcus Stoinis (90) and David Hussey (81) both missed out on the chance to turn theirs into hundreds. Stoinis fell to Putland and Hussey was caught behind off Mennie, who finished with 3 for 62, but at the close of play the Handscomb-Christian partnership was worth 139 and much work remained for the Redbacks.

Muralitharan joins Australia coaching staff

Australia have made a dramatic move in their attempts to improve their spin credentials in Asian conditions, hiring Muttiah Muralitharan as a coaching consultant for this year’s Test series against Pakistan in the UAE. And while Muralitharan has no intention of turning Nathan Lyon into a master of the doosra, he is already helping Lyon add a carrom ball to his arsenal. The two men have been working together in Sri Lanka this week and Muralitharan said he was confident Lyon would be ready to deliver the carrom ball to Pakistan’s batsmen in the Test series in October. But the appointment of Muralitharan for the short-term role is not only about helping Lyon but also equipping Australia’s batsmen to face Saeed Ajmal and the Pakistan spinners.Australia’s most recent Test tour in Asia was their disastrous campaign in India early last year, when they lost 4-0 and struggled to handle to R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja in turning conditions. The penetration of their own spinners was also a weakness throughout the tour, although it was not helped by Lyon being dropped mid-series and replaced by Glenn Maxwell and Xavier Doherty.Lyon returned for the final Test in Delhi and picked up nine wickets for the match, and since then has moved on to have 112 victims at 32.99 from his 33 Test appearances. Muralitharan said Lyon was clearly Australia’s best spin option and he expected him to be able to deliver the occasional carrom ball in the UAE this year before mastering it in years to come.”In a country like Australia, you don’t need many spinners, you need to get the right one,” Muralitharan said. “I think Nathan Lyon is the answer, for any format. He spins the ball, he is confident, he has done well and taken more than 100 wickets in Test cricket. Australia has to persevere with him and then fill the backups.”The doosra is very difficult to teach. We are trying something else, like a carrom ball … He is a finger-spinner, I am a wrist-spinner. For a wrist-spinner to change the wrist position is easy. But for a finger-spinner to change the wrist position to bowl the doosra is harder. So it would be difficult.”He’s already starting to bowl the carrom ball. So that is the easiest way for the finger-spinners to learn … I think he’ll be ready. He will bowl a few balls in the UAE and he will master it in years to come.”Muralitharan has been working not only with Lyon but also several of Australia’s emerging spinners in Sri Lanka this week, including James Muirhead and Clive Rose. But his role in the UAE will also include bowling to Australia’s batsmen in the nets in an attempt to get them accustomed to the style of Ajmal, who is the highest-ranked spinner on the ICC’s bowling rankings and will enjoy the conditions greatly.”I’m not a good batsman so I can’t give many tips to batsmen, but the thing I can do is that I’m still good enough to bowl to the batsmen,” Muralitharan said. “Myself and Ajmal are a little bit similar. We are bowling doosras and offspin, so they might learn from batting in the nets, rather than me trying to teach them. I can’t teach batting.”Muralitharan said he was confident he would have the support of the vast majority of Australian cricket fans despite his history with the country, which was dominated by his being no-balled for throwing in the 1995 Boxing Day Test in Melbourne. His relationship with Australia has improved significantly and he was one of the most popular overseas players in the BBL during his time with the Melbourne Renegades. His appointment has continued the push by coach Darren Lehmann to have specialists assist the team at strategic times, as when Shane Warne provided spin advice in South Africa this year.”Muttiah Muralitharan is a true great of the game and his involvement with the Australian team will bring enormous benefits,” Lehmann said. “He really understands the conditions we’ll face and will be able to impart a great amount of knowledge. Not only will he help guide our spinners during that tour, but he will also work with our batsmen to help them prepare to play Pakistan’s dangerous spin bowlers.”As we’ve shown in recent times we’ll bring in dedicated skill-specific coaching consultants to our support staff as and when we see fit. That means having more regular support from technical experts to help work on specific areas of performance.”Most recently we had Shane Warne join us in South Africa, and throughout the Australian summer we had a range of former Australian players around the team during the Test series to help impart specialist knowledge. This time around we are fortunate enough to have Muttiah work with us.”
