Crystal Palace: Fans react to club’s Jean-Phillipe Mateta tweet

Many Crystal Palace fans have been angered after the Eagles’ official Twitter account posted Jean-Phillipe Mateta’s backheel against Brighton in their 2-1 win back in February as their Goal of the Day to mark his 24th birthday on Monday.

The Frenchman made just seven appearances for Palace after joining on an 18-month loan deal in January from Mainz [cpfc.co.uk], with that being the only goal he has scored for the club thus far.

Interestingly, he will become a permanent Crystal Palace player should he complete 15 Premier League starts by the end of 2021/22 [Sky Sports].

Despite converting the famous flick away to their south coast rivals four months ago, he has not been given many opportunities to have a sustained impact in south London.

Upon looking back at the goal, loads of Crystal Palace fans took to social media to voice their opinions, with many objecting to his sparsity of appearances following that magic moment.

Crystal Palace fans react:

Replying to the club’s official Twitter account, here is how some Eagles supporters summarised their feelings on the clip of Mateta’s goal at the Amex Stadium:

“A finish so great he didn’t start again”

Celtic can find Brown heir in Patrick Berg

Ange Postecoglou will face a hefty battle this summer as he seeks to replace some of Celtic’s star players.

Both Kristoffer Ajer and Odsonne Edouard look as though they’re heading for the exit door and it will be tough on the new manager to have to sanction those moves.

On the chalkboard

While Celtic will miss the defensive solidity of Ajer and the goalscoring feats of Edouard, they will also find the leadership qualities Scott Brown a huge loss.

The midfield titan has joined Aberdeen in a player-coaching capacity, waving farewell to Paradise after an incredible 14-year spell which saw him win ten Premiership crowns.

He was often the glue which held this Hoops team together, combining tough tackling with a frightening personality and a bullish attitude to the game. If you were on the wrong end of a Brown tackle, it usually didn’t end up well for you.

That being said, his time at Parkhead petered out in a rather disastrous fashion. He made sloppy mistakes and was off the pace on a regular basis as he struggled with his 35-year-old body.

Brown had a tireless attitude to football while his leadership skills were second to none. Therefore, replacing him will be an arduous task.

The solution

The most natural answer to their problems falls into the hands of Ismaila Soro. The diminutive Ivorian found minutes hard to come by in the back end of the campaign but impressed when he did get on the field.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-celtic-news-faria-postecoglou-howe-elyounoussi” title= “Read the latest Celtic news!”]

During a four-match period between the 13th and 30th of December, Soro was given a run in the team as Celtic won all of their matches without conceding. That being said, the Hoops would be foolish not to invest in their midfield options.

One player who could arrive in Glasgow is Bodo/Glimt midfielder Patrick Berg. An unnamed Scottish club have been linked with signing him, but The Scotsman believe that to be either Rangers or Celtic.

He’s been playing under Kjetil Knutsen in Norway, a manager we suggested on Football FanCast would be a good appointment for the Hoops.

Renowned for playing attacking football, Berg doesn’t often receive praise for his efforts in the Norwegian club. However, the midfielder is often the player who makes Bodo/Glimt tick, starting attacks from deep and possessing an eye-catching set of defensive attributes.

Like 1.73m (5 ft 8) Soro, he’s a relatively small figure at 1.78m (5 ft 10), but that doesn’t deter him from his duties in the middle of the park.

Described as an “excellent water carrier” by Bhoys Analytics, the 23-year-old is composed in possession and always looks for the forward pass.

When it comes to replacing Brown, he is also adept at making tackles. During Bodo/Glimt’s title-winning campaign in 2020, Berg produced 2.2 successful tackles and 1.5 interceptions per match. He has started the 2021 campaign in a similar light, winning two challenges per game.

Berg might be small for a defensive midfielder but he has strong acceleration to get him out of trouble and is extremely positive.

This would be a shrewd addition from Postecoglou if he brings in the Norwegian midfielder as Brown’s long-term successor.

AND in other news, McKay must seal Celtic swoop for 58-cap “beast” who’s “always loved” Ange Postecoglou…

Cairns injury rocks New Zealand team already in parlous position

New Zealand all-rounder Chris Cairns’ future in the National Bank Test Series is in doubt.Cairns has suffered a patella tendon strain in his right knee. A scan has shown he has inflammation of the fat pad and the team management will be reviewing his position in the next 24-36 hours. He was dismissed for a duck in New Zealand’s collapse to be all out for 147, 81 runs behind England on the first innings at Jade Stadium in Christchurch today.Chris Drum and Ian Butler opened the bowling in England’s second innings. New Zealand team management said Cairns was expected to bowl in the innings. They also said the injury was unrelated to previous injuries.

Andersen can be Arsenal’s dream Luiz heir

Joachim Andersen is a target for Arsenal this summer transfer window…

What’s the word?

That’s according to The Athletic, who claim the Lyon centre-back is likely to end up in North London with both Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur battling it out for his signature after an impressive loan spell at Fulham this campaign.

Arch-rivals Spurs appear to be the clear favourites, whilst Europa League runners-up Manchester United have also been mooted with interest, but there is seemingly still a chance that he could end up at The Emirates.

The 25-year-old is likely to command a fee in the region of €23m (£20m) and the Ligue 1 outfit are said to be open to offers, with them not planning for his return ahead of pre-season.

Luiz replacement

This could be quite a shrewd piece of business from Mikel Arteta and Edu as they certainly need to bolster their side’s defence following the confirmed departure of David Luiz.

After two years at the Emirates Stadium, the 34-year-old will leave the club following the expiry of his contract, leaving a huge hole in the backline.

Andersen may well have been part of a side relegated from the big time this season but he was one of the few shining lights in Scott Parker’s side – evidently if three of the traditional top seven are mooted with interest.

Luiz, a renowned livewire, has been a very good ball-playing defender for the Gunners. For example, this season, his 83.5% passing accuracy and 3.6 long balls per game saw him rate out as one of Arteta’s best options.

As per WhoScored, the five-cap Denmark international recorded a respectable 5.8 successful long balls each outing and still brought home 81.4% accuracy, which was better than midfielders like Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Ademola Lookman.

His form at Craven Cottage has earned a fair share of plaudits, with the 6 foot 4 centre-back being described as “absolutely sensational” by club legend Tony Gale and “magnificent” by the Mirror’s chief football writer John Cross.

For just £20m, there can’t be many better alternatives out there at such a bargain price, especially if Arsenal want to instantly get back on track next season.

Andersen just proved he can cut the mustard in the Premier League and with Arteta in need of a new option, Edu must look to secure him as he seems to be the dream replacement for Luiz, on the above evidence.

AND in other news, Edu could finally replace Ozil with Arsenal swoop for “exceptional” £18m-rated wizard…

Sutton makes Spurs Bielsa claim

Chris Sutton has suggested Marcelo Bielsa has had his head turned by Tottenham Hotspur as they continue their search for a new manager.

The Lowdown: Spurs interested in Bielsa

Reports have recently suggested Tottenham are interested in hiring the Leeds boss to replace Jose Mourinho as the club’s permanent manager (Football Insider).

Bielsa’s current contract at Elland Road is set run out at the end of the term (The Athletic).

The Latest: Sutton makes Bielsa claim

Speaking on BBC 5Live following a call from a Leeds fan, Sutton suggested the Argentinian has had his head turned by Spurs. He said:

“He’s not signed a new contract with Leeds United. Everybody gets their head turned, everyone gets their head turned. My source is not Marcelo Bielsa, but I will have a word with my source.”

He continued, to Leeds fan Derek: “I understand your point but the fact of the matter is, whether you like it or not, he hasn’t signed a new contract for next season. Is something amiss?”

The Verdict: Why?

Bielsa is a club legend at Leeds United. He was the man to take them back to the Premier League for the first time in 16 years, and they are on course to finish in the top half this campaign. His achievements mean he is adored at Elland Road. He is also a legend across the globe, too – former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino has previously admitted to being inspired by the ex-Marseille manager (via Give Me Sport).

Although he has not put pen to paper on a new deal, he has previously said he will wait until the end of the season to contemplate such a move (Sky Sports). While Spurs have more funds and are more established, Bielsa has free reign at Leeds to put the team together as he wishes – whether he would have that freedom at Tottenham is up for debate.

While Levy may be interested, it is hard to see Bielsa making the switch to north London.

In other news, Levy wants to hire this Champions League winner as the new Spurs manager.

Bull can’t understand why Nuno left Wolves

It shocked the entire Black Country as well as the whole of the Premier League when Nuno Espirito Santo announced he would be leaving the club this summer. It’s something even Wolves legend Steve Bull couldn’t believe.

Fans were able to give Nuno a good send-off after their game against Manchester United at Molineux as 10,000 Wolves supporters said their final goodbyes to the man who got them out of the Championship and into the Europa League within two seasons.

Fans are obviously feeling a bit empty and sad that he is leaving with some even hanging a huge flag from the Iron bridge in the Midlands wishing Nuno goodbye, good luck and a thank you for everything he achieved at Wolves.

Nuno only signed a new contract at Molineux in October 2020, however, that did nothing to stop him parting ways with the club, something Bull can’t get his head around as he explained exclusively to Football FanCast:

“I know that the night before he was happy as larry and was absolutely fine, but then the next morning I was getting loads of texts saying he had left.”

The early frontrunner for the job is former Benfica manager Bruno Lage who was also Carlos Carvalhal’s assistant coach at both Sheffield Wednesday and Swansea City.

Wolves will have to be careful who they appoint as Nuno’s successor because after a poor season this year which saw them finish 13th in the Premier League, a bad manager could see them tumble towards the bottom three next season.

Newcastle: Matty Longstaff must start v Fulham

It’s been a truly bizarre, indeed almost nightmarish, season for Matty Longstaff at Newcastle United.

Described as “talented” by Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp, the 21-year-old showed in that stunning goalscoring performance against Manchester United in October 2019 that he has the ability to be a top-drawer player for the Magpies.

Speaking after that game, Arsenal icon Martin Keown declared: “The young lad should be knocking on Steve Bruce’s door and saying ‘Why didn’t you play me sooner?’ It was almost to say to the boss, ‘Hey, look at me, you have overlooked me for too long.’

“It was like a Paul Scholes…I know that’s big praise and they are big boots for him to copy, but him and his brother – Carrick, Scholes…you know, they did very well. And this is an important ingredient now in this Newcastle team, yes they were more disciplined but those two definitely won them the game.”

However, after putting pen to paper on a new deal last summer, things have gone horribly south for the younger Longstaff, playing just five games in the Premier League all season and not featuring at all since mid-January.

It has raised a few eyebrows to put it mildly, not least from the rest of the Newcastle squad apparently. The Athletic’s Chris Waugh revealed: “Steve Bruce, the head coach, has simply opted to exclude the academy graduate, much to the bemusement of team-mates and the player himself.

“There have been some suggestions that his naivety at Premier League level is part of the reason, yet that does not tally with the decision to field Longstaff against three of the very best sides in the division over the Christmas period.

“This season really needed to be one during which Longstaff was given opportunities. The club, Bruce and the player all recognised that. So, if those chances were not going to arrive on Tyneside, then surely a loan deal would have been in the player’s best interests.”

However, with the final day of the Premier League season now here, surely Bruce has no excuse but to give the £4.5m-rated Longstaff the chance to shine.

After being promised genuine first-team opportunities this term, there’s no questioning that the 21-year-old will be frustrated, maybe even livid, at being cast aside for the majority of the season – not least considering how badly the Magpies were struggling prior to the March international break.

The clash against Fulham later this afternoon should offer him an overdue chance to taste first team football.

Meanwhile, Luke Edwards has dropped an exciting Newcastle United update…

Pundit says Alli will regret failed PSG move

Dean Windass has exclusively told Football FanCast that Dele Alli should have taken up the opportunity to leave Tottenham in January.

Prior to the window opening, Alli has been enduring a wretched campaign having fallen out of favour under Jose Mourinho, and had played just 74 minutes in the Premier League, with his only start coming on the opening-day.

Following his lack of opportunities, former manager Mauricio Pochettino was keen on bringing the £100,000-a-week attacker to the French capital on loan to improve his chances of being named in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the Euros.

But Tottenham blocked the move at the last minute because they were unable to find a replacement, meaning Alli was forced to remain in north London for the remainder of the campaign.

He’s appeared 11 times in all competitions since the window closed, but having made only one Premier League start since, Windass believes the former MK Dons youngster will regret staying.

He told Football FanCast:

“I think he should have left. If the rumours were true about PSG under Poch, then I would have gone on a loan deal.

“If Dele Alli had that chance then I would have gone because I’d want to play games and I knew the manager would have trusted me.

“We don’t know what happens in training. Is he sulking? These are the questions no one can answer.”

Journalist offers Fernandez fitness latest

Newcastle medics fear that the after-effects of Covid-19 have hampered Federico Fernandez’s recovery from injury.

That’s according to The Athletic’s Chris Waugh, who offered an update on the Argentine on Tuesday afternoon.

Fernandez was a regular for Newcastle during the first half of the season, his only absence down to a positive coronavirus test back in December.

He then strained his thigh muscle, keeping him out from the middle of January until the beginning of March.

Fernandez setback gives Bruce headache

The 32-year-old returned to the bench for the goalless draw at West Bromwich Albion and remained among the substitutes for the Aston Villa and Brighton matches.

But there was no sign of him in the matchday squad last Sunday as Newcastle faced Spurs. He’s clearly struggling to build-up to full match fitness.

His return can’t come soon enough for the Magpies. Steve Bruce was forced to select Emil Krafth and Paul Dummett, two full-backs by trade, either side of Jamaal Lascelles in a back three at the weekend.

Krafth in particular found it a real struggle – Lee Ryder rated his performance a mere four out of ten, with Waugh commenting on The Athletic that Fernandez has been “huge miss”.

Transfer Tavern verdict

If Newcastle feel they can’t rely on Fernandez, it raises real doubts about his future. His contract is up in the summer, and at 32 a renewal seems unlikely if these problems persist.

It’s clear that we don’t yet fully understand the toll the pandemic is taking on certain players, and fans will be hoping the former Swansea man is back at full fitness as soon as possible.

In other news, Noel Whelan made this claim about a possible Steve Bruce replacement.
