Windass urges Ward-Prowse to reject Villa and stay at Southampton

Despite controversially being left out of the England squad, former Hull City ace, Dean Windass, has advised James Ward-Prowse to stay at Southampton amid interest from free-spending Aston Villa.

Many fans were shocked to see Ward-Prowse excluded at the expense of Ben White in Gareth Southgate’s England squad, however, after the performances of both Declan Rice and Kalvin Phillips, the England manager appears to have silenced his critics once again.

Something that is less of a surprise is that Ward-Prowse is being linked with a move away from Southampton, with Dean Smith’s Villa reportedly wanting to bring the set-piece specialist to Villa Park this summer.

The £75,000-per-week midfielder’s creativity and dead ball ability would certainly lift pressure off Jack Grealish’s shoulders, but he should reject any advances from Villa to stay with the Saints, according to Windass, who spoke exclusively to Transfer Tavern:

“I can’t see Ward-Prowse leaving Southampton for Villa because, in my opinion, I think Southampton will finish above Villa next year.

“Why would he want to leave? He’s captain of Southampton and he’s a big fish in their pond so like I said earlier on, why would he want to go?”

Villa look to be making a big splash in the transfer market this summer having already confirmed the £33million signing of Emiliano Buendia who is coming off the back of yet another title-winning season in the Championship with Norwich City.

Southampton certainly ended up disappointing last season with a relegation battle, but some quality additions on the flanks could turn them into serious contenders in the top-half of the table.

Celtic: Robinson reacts to Carter-Vickers links

Football Insider pundit Paul Robinson has been reacting to Celtic’s reported interest in Tottenham defender Cameron Carter-Vickers.

The Lowdown: Carter-Vickers links

A source close to the player informed USA journalist Larry Henry Jr regarding the Hoops’ interest in Carter-Vickers.

Any possible move for the Spurs centre-back would reportedly be a permanent one, despite the 23-year-old having six loan moves during his time in north London.

Reports back in May suggested that Tottenham value Carter-Vickers around the £10m mark.

Celtic may well be in the need of defensive reinforcements, with Kristoffer Ajer unhappy with the Hoops after they rejected two bids for his services.

The Latest: Robinson reacts

Robinson was talking to Football Insider regarding the links to the American defender.

The 41-year-old was asked if he would be a good addition for Ange Postecoglou, to which he said:

“I was impressed with him at Bournemouth last season. It was a good loan spell.

“He has got a good amount of experience behind him now. He could be a stabilising force at the back for Celtic next year.

“Obviously it did not work out for Shane Duffy last season and everyone expected him to be a big success when he went up there on loan so there are no guarantees.

“Postecoglou has got a lot of building to do up there but I believe he can get them going again. I like the appointment and I think he is a manager who can unite the club once again.

“Signing someone like Carter-Vickers would be a great start because he could sure up the defence. The quicker they get their back four and goalkeeper sorted out the better really.”

The Verdict: £10m way too much

Should Spurs still be wanting £10m for the defender, Celtic would have to make him their club-record signing.

Yes, they may have money to spend if Ajer gets his wish and leaves, but links of a £5m offer for highly-rated teenager Mario Vuskovic and claims they are monitoring £3.5m wonderkid Piero Hincapie could be wiser defensive moves, given their price and age.

Carter-Vickers has over 100 games experience in the Championship but is yet to feature in the Premier League, so £10m for the defender who has never proven himself at the highest level could be a costly decision.

Villa’s owners want James Ward-Prowse signed

Aston Villa have been handed a transfer update on their pursuit of England and Southampton star James Ward-Prowse, and it should leave fans buzzing.

What’s the story?

According to recent reports from The Guardian, Smith is keen on landing the midfielder this summer  – a move that would fit in with what the Villa boss recently had to say about the club’s transfer plans and signing Premier League proven players.

Now, Football Insider claim that “Aston Villa owners Wes Edens and Naseef Sawiris will throw their financial might behind the bid to lure James Ward-Prowse from Southampton.”

It’s added: “A Villa source has told Football Insider that billionaire owners Edens and Sawiris are backing Smith to the hilt for a third consecutive summer as they look to build on the club-record capture of Emiliano Buendia last week. The owners are keen for a deal to be finalised in time for the midfielder to be at the club’s Bodymoor Heath training ground for the start of pre-season.”

Dean Smith will be buzzing

As Southampton captain, and that too at only 26, the midfielder is the cornerstone of Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side, and it’s no surprise the Saints boss has waxed lyrical about him.

Speaking about Ward-Prowse’s influence, he said: “You have to walk out there and always be the role model of what we are standing for. When you see him running and him fighting for everything in every game then this is what a captain should do.

“Not speaking in the dressing room or telling people how it works, but showing it on the pitch how it works. For me, this is how a captain should be.”

The news that NSWE will be backing Smith to the hilt this summer with potential new signings, including getting a big-money deal for Ward-Prowse over the line, should be music to the ears of the Villa boss.

Smith showed last season in the Premier League that with the right kind of financial backing, he can work wonders – you only have to look at the signings of Ollie Watkins and Emi Martinez and how they turned them into a team just outside the top ten to see that.

Having that same kind of commitment from the owners this time around is a recipe for success, and the Villa boss will be absolutely buzzing with this latest transfer update.

Meanwhile, Villa could deliver another Buendia masterclass with this star…

Bye-bye Moura: Spurs eye Bundesliga star

Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly entered talks to sign Marcus Thuram…

What’s the word?

According to RMC Sport journalist Mohamed Bouhafsi, the 23-year-old is set to leave Borussia Monchengladbach this summer and discussions with the Premier League outfit have advanced in recent days.

He tweeted:

“Marcus Thuram will leave Borussia Monchengladbach this summer. The player is in talks with Tottenham. It is a priority of the club. Sources close to the English club explain that the discussions have advanced in recent days.”

It remains to be seen how much the Bundesliga side will command for their first-choice winger but Transfermarkt currently values him at around £31.5m.

Bye-bye Moura

With the future of Lucas Moura up in the air, the North Londoners could already be preparing for life after the Brazilian, who would leave renowned for his come-from-behind hat-trick against Ajax in the Champions League final.

As per Goal.com, the 28-year-old has been subject to interest from Saudi Arabia, with rivals Al Hilal and Al Nassr thought to be considering a move for him in the transfer window.

If the new director of football, Fabio Paratici, wants to find an instant replacement, then perhaps he’ll find it in the Gladbach sensation.

The three-cap France international has enjoyed a phenomenal campaign at Borussia-Park, where he has delivered 11 goals and 12 assists in 40 appearances across all competitions, via Transfermarkt.

That included a brace against Real Madrid, whilst he has also found the net against big league rivals RB Leipzig and Borussia Dortmund.

Thuram is described as a sharpshooter by the official Bundesliga website and they also liken him to Manchester United’s fellow Frenchman, Anthony Martial.

At 6 foot 4, he’s certainly bigger in stature and is a tad bit more stockier than the Premier League marksman but his quick, direct and strong capabilities have made him a left-winger to be feared.

“I believe that Marcus is far from the end of his development. There’s a lot more to come from him,” claimed his former boss Marco Rose. “Marcus is a footballer who benefits greatly from his physique and stature. He’s also a fine technician, who can always deal with situations in tight spaces.”

Thuram has also been described as “fast, robust and dangerous” by sporting director Max Eberl and lauded as someone who is going to have a “great future” by former coach Jean-Louis Gasset.

Paratici must look to make the towering speed demon one of his first signings at the club. He’d be a perfect replacement for Moura, even based on his goal record alone but it’s evident that he’d offer the Premier League side so much more.

Celtic sent Siriki Demble warning

Celtic have been warned to move quickly or risk losing out on Peterborough United striker Siriki Dembele.

Noel Whelan, formerly of Aberdeen, discussed the potential transfer with Football Insider.

The lowdown

24-year-old Dembele scored 11 goals and provided 12 assists in 45 appearances for Peterborough as they secured automatic promotion from League One.

Overall, the striker has netted 25 times and set up a further 28 goals in 122 outings for The Posh.

Dembele is about to enter the final year of his contract at the Weston Homes Stadium, and the club’s Director of Football Barry Fry doesn’t currently expect him to commit to a new deal.

According to Football Insider, Celtic are one of many clubs eyeing him.

His younger brother, Karamoko, already plays for the Hoops, but arch-rivals Rangers are said to be in the hunt, along with Fulham and Crystal Palace.

Dembele is a supremely versatile forward. He’s just about played the majority of his games as a centre-forward, but has also notched 26 combined appearances as a left-winger and attacking midfielder.

The latest

Whelan reckons it would be good business for Celtic but cautioned that ‘goalscorers don’t hang around’.

“There’s no doubt they need new strikers in there,” he said.

“If you can get a player on the cheap who is a good standard and will do very well in the Scottish Premiership, it’s a no-brainer.

“But they have to get a manager in there to get a deal done as quickly as possible.

“Goalscorers don’t hang around too long and god forbid you don’t want Rangers swooping in there and beating you.

“They need to get things in place before you start buying players. The manager is the priority.

“He can bring his players, you can’t judge him if he fails with someone else’s players.”

The verdict

Dembele probably shouldn’t be viewed as a replacement for Odsonne Edouard, were the Frenchman to leave, because he’s not really an out-and-out number nine.

But his versatility would make him a valuable asset to any of his suitors and he’ll surely be available for a relatively small fee given Fry’s public admission over his contract.

Clubs are bound to pounce on bargains of this nature, but Celtic feel like a club in limbo at the moment, almost paralysed until they finally resolve this managerial uncertainty.

Sunderland: McFadzean continues to falter

What defines a scapegoat? According to the dictionary, it’s a person that’s blamed for the mistakes and wrongdoings of others.

Therefore, it wouldn’t be politically correct to suggest that Callum McFadzean was Sunderland’s.

He may be targeted considerably by fan blogs for his poor performances but the fact of the matter is that for the most part, he deserves the criticism. After all, he is the man making the errors.

McFadzean is a committed professional and is a handy full-back when it comes to the offensive phases of play. Though, when he’s faced with a tricky winger he looks way out of his depth.

We have seen that on multiple occasions this term. Whether it was giving away a penalty against Wimbledon last year or being run ragged by Otis Khan in the EFL final at Wembley, he’s had plenty of moments to forget in 2020/21.

During that clash, he was beaten by Khan on four occasions while he was also led what Sunderland reporter James Hunter described as “merry dance” by Olamide Shodipo when the Black Cats faced Oxford United.

Though, none were arguably worse than what occurred against Hull City on Tuesday evening.

On paper, a 2-2 draw with their fellow promotion hopefuls was a good result, but consider three straight defeats before that and their chances of automatic promotion appear to be fading by the day.

McFadzean owes a great apology for his role in the defeat to Hull.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/latest-sunderland-transfer-rumours-and-news-grigg-denayer-louis-dreyfus-sanderson-melamed” title=”Latest Sunderland transfer news and views!”]

Playing at left-back, he was terrorised by Mallik Wilks, one of League One’s best players this season.

The Hull winger has netted 16 goals this term while providing six assists for his teammates in the process. He didn’t find the net on Tuesday but he did create both goals after skinning McFadzean down the right.

Bailey Wright may have been unable to pick up Josh Magennis who bagged both strikes inside the area but if Sunderland’s left-back had been stronger and more adept he’d have been able to stop the source of the delivery.

In total, McFadzean lost a whopping 80% of his defensive duels as he committed two fouls and was dribbled past on three occasions. He was only able to make one tackle during his time on the field too.

Wilks was a constant threat, producing four shots, four dribbles and two key passes for the Tigers.

Against one of the most dangerous players in the third tier, the Mackems full-back was caught napping on several occasions.

Lee Johnson has been keen to stick with him in recent weeks while Denver Hume steps up his recovery from injury but his performance this week that should have left the manager seething.

He needs to drop him permanently from the starting XI during the run-in.

Pundit values Soucek at £35-40 million

In an exclusive interview with The Transfer Tavern, Steve Bull, who scored 306 goals for Wolves, has claimed that West Ham should value Tomas Soucek around £35-40 million.

Soucek originally joined the Hammers on loan for the second half of last season but was quickly snapped up on a permanent deal after impressing David Moyes in helping turn West Ham’s fortunes around.

Moyes has admitted that West Ham may have to listen to offers for both Soucek and Declan Rice this summer, even if they do qualify for the Champions League, with Rob Lee telling Football FanCast that the latter is worth £100 million.

Speaking on how much Soucek could cost for any team looking to sign him and how Moyes could be tempted to cash in, Bull told The Transfer Tavern:

“If he is good enough then somebody will approach West Ham and try to prise him away for around £35-40 million.

“Someone will tempt West Ham with an offer because he’s a very good player.”

During the latest round of international fixtures, the £62,000 per week midfielder continued to impress as he netted the perfect hat-trick for the Czech Republic as they beat Estonia 6-1.

West Han are currently in pole position to qualify for the Champions League but have been rocked by the recent injury blows to both Rice and Michail Antonio.
