Why Southampton should sign Jacob Murphy

Southampton have been linked with a move for Newcastle United winger Jacob Murphy recently, and considering his impressive recent form, it seems as if he could be a solid addition to Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side this summer.

What’s the word?

According to Football Insider, both Rangers and Southampton are interested in signing the 26-year-old ahead of next season and will have to pay around £3m for his services.

Murphy’s contract at St James’ Park is reportedly set to expire at the end of the season and there are a lot of factors still to be decided before his future at Newcastle becomes clear, including whether or not Steve Bruce remains in charge and if they can avoid relegation to the Championship.

Would he be a good signing?

Whilst Murphy has always been an impressive winger at Championship level, producing excellent displays in the second tier with the likes of Norwich City and Sheffield Wednesday in the past, he has never really been able to replicate those performances and goal contributions in the top flight.

In 53 Premier League appearances, he has managed just three goals and four assists, which doesn’t bode well when you consider that the majority of the wingers in Hasenhuttl’s squad have struggled to provide goal contributions this season.

However, the Englishman has been deployed in a right wing-back role by Bruce in recent weeks and has produced some excellent displays, impressing against Wolves, Tottenham Hotspur and Burnley, with one goal and one assist in those three appearances.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/southampton-saints-ralph-hasenhuttl-martin-semmens-st-marys” title=”Latest Southampton news, transfer rumours and more”]

This opens up a new possibility for Hasenhuttl, as the Austrian has openly admitted that Southampton need cover at full-back ahead of next season, so perhaps Murphy could be a solid backup option for Kyle Walker-Peters in 2021/22 should he make the move to St Mary’s this summer.

The former RB Leipzig boss also suggested that Southampton would be looking to complete deals below £10m, so the Murphy transfer would make a lot of sense if his reported asking price is accurate.

Earlier in the season, former Leeds United man Noel Whelan was full of praise for the Newcastle ace, saying: “Murphy is a player with so much ability. He was brought to that club to run, be direct, use that pace and skill that he has with the ball at his feet and now he seems to be doing it.”

Therefore, Murphy’s versatility, low asking price and homegrown status all mark him out as a solid option for Hasenhuttl this summer, so Martin Semmens should definitely try and bring him to St Mary’s.

Dalic criticises Gers’ Barisic

Croatia manager Zlatko Dalic explained his decision to take Glasgow Rangers’ Borna Barisic off against Slovenia on Wednesday.

Dalic criticises Barisic

Barisic was named in the starting XI for the Balkan side in their first 2022 World Cup qualifier – they reached the final in the tournament’s last edition in Russia.

However, he was hauled off after just 45 minutes as he was in danger of picking up a red card. Dalic revealed (via 24sata.hr):

“Borna received a yellow card early, then committed a foul on the edge of the red card. I was looking for more penetration on the left flank, so I transferred Perišić to the left back and introduced Oršić to the wing.”

Harsh

Indeed, the £4.95m-valued 28-year-old (Transfermarkt) was on the edge of being dismissed against Slovenia and really gave Dalic no choice but to take him off. He must do more to make sure he does not put himself in such positions, especially so early on in the match.

However, his overall display was not that bad. He won two of his three duels, landed 86% of his passes and completed 100% of his attempted dribbles (SofaScore). Still, if he wants to play for Croatia both at the European Championships this summer and beyond, he must improve. After all, he has started just four of his nation’s last 10 matches (Transfermarkt) as Dalic appears to be exploring other options.

In other news, this Rangers man’s performance against Celtic has been hammered.

Bruce hit gold with Newcastle’s Murphy

Steve Bruce played a blinder against Tottenham Hotspur by unleashing Newcastle United midfielder Jacob Murphy at right-wing-back.

Murphy had not opened a Premier League fixture in the Toon’s last nine games and only featured as a substitute on four occasions in that run.

When he had been called on, Murphy also took up attacking positions with the 26-year-old tasked with offering width against Wolverhampton Wanderers after Allan Saint-Maximin was forced off with a groin injury.

Murphy also came off the bench with less than 10 minutes on the clock against Aston Villa last month, which was enough to see the £25,000-per-week gem twist and turn his way into Emiliano Martinez’s box before crashing his shot against the crossbar.

The missed chance failed to dent Murphy’s confidence and he soon set Jamaal Lascelles’ up to equalise, yet was left on the bench against Brighton & Hove Albion before the international break and instructed to add defensive resilience against Spurs on Sunday.

But Bruce’s decision to recall Murphy to the Magpies’ starting line-up for the first time since losing 2-1 at home to Leeds United in January proved genius, as the £3m-rated maestro – who is set to be out of contract in the summer – absolutely thrived.

Murphy displayed undiluted grit to fight for the shirt up against Harry Kane, Lucas Moura and Sergio Reguilon, which was all too often lacking from the Toon in their dismal 3-0 humbling at relegation-rivals Brighton last month.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/the-latest-newcastle-news%2c-gossip-and-views-2″ title=”The latest Newcastle news, gossip and views!”]

“Jacob Murphy [was] outstanding for Newcastle at right-wing-back,” The Times’ Chief Football Writer Henry Winter noted on Twitter after the game. “[He] ran himself into the ground, defending/attacking. His resilience echoed all over.”

The former England U21 international was eventually replaced in the 83rd minute by Javier Manquillo having developed cramp, which was not too unexpected given the performance he delivered and his lack of minutes in recent months.

Murphy has experience of playing at right-wing-back this season having been called on to play in defence on five occasions in the Premier League, but had not featured in the role since Newcastle were beaten 5-2 at Leeds in December.

He was unable to stop the Whites from thriving on their left-hand channel that day and appeared to duck out of the away when Jack Harrison delivered the cross for his side’s third goal.

Yet it was a very different Murphy on show this Sunday against Spurs, as he won a whopping 10 ground duels, made five successful tackles and created two goalscoring opportunities, per SofaScore.

Murphy has only averaged 3.6 ground duels won per Premier League game this season, along with 1.1 tackles and 0.7 key passes, but excelled to end the day with two more successful tackles to his name than any other player.

Jonjo Shelvey and Emil Krafth also registered two key passes, but no United player won as many ground duels as Murphy, either, with Miguel Almiron the second-most successful player in black and white after winning seven.

Moura won seven of his ground duels for Tottenham, while Kane could only win one and Reguilon won three as they often found the Toon’s right-wing a challenge to break through.

Bruce will surely have been delighted with Murphy’s performance, and feel that his decision to recall the winger in defence was vindicated.

Celtic: Kenny endures Old Firm shocker

An Old Firm with little riding on it? Celtic may have lost their grasp on the SPFL title but that was never going to be the case at Parkhead on Sunday.

Indeed, this was a fantastic opportunity for the Hoops to deny their rivals of an unbeaten campaign.

The Bhoys have been shocking this season and after watching their title slip away to Rangers, this was the only sense of pride they could regain.

For the most part, Celtic were the better side. They created plenty of openings in the first half and if it wasn’t for Allan McGregor, they’d have taken home all three points.

The score ultimately finished 1-1 as Celtic dropped yet more points. It wasn’t a first Old Firm as a manager to savour for John Kennedy, but nor was it a good afternoon for Jonjoe Kenny.

This was an Old Firm initiation for the young defender but he failed it, slipping up defensively and looking out of sorts from an offensive point of view.

McGregor may well have denied the Bhoys victory but it was Kenny who arguably cost them the game.

Celtic were seemingly cruising through the first half when a huge lapse in concentration ruined their day. Kenny was in possession of the ball when he played a bizarre back pass that went out of play for a corner.

The set-piece was ultimately one that Alfredo Morelos scored from and again Kenny was at fault. The Everton loanee lost his marker and then failed to track him to the back post. It left the Rangers striker with a tap in he couldn’t miss.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/latest-celtic-manager-and-transfer-news-boupendza-mcgeady-marsch-mccarthy” title=”Latest Celtic manager and transfer news!”]

Speaking on BBC Sportsound, Pat Bonner said: “Jonjoe Kenny played that passback with no control when he didn’t even need to which led to the corner. Balogun out jumps everyone and no one follows Morelos. After dominating the game it’s another set-piece that undoes Celtic.”

This was nothing short of a nightmare display from the 24-year-old. He lost possession of the ball on 17 occasions, more than any other Hoops player including Ryan Christie, while he completed just 80% of his passes.

Celtic’s right-hand side was virtually non-existent with Christie providing little threat either. However, he did at least provide two key passes, something Kenny didn’t produce any of.

Offensively he was particularly mediocre. Against Dundee United, the full-back regularly got forward and proved a constant threat. However, this Sunday he didn’t show much, registering just one accurate cross from three attempts.

This was a dismal outing and one that let Kennedy down significantly.

Gers fans slam Ian Crocker.

Glasgow Rangers fans are disgusted at Ian Crocker after the Sky Sports commentator continually criticised Alfredo Morelos on Wednesday.

The Gers beat Hibernian 1-0 at Easter Road as they maintained their 23-point lead at the top of the Premiership (BBC). Morelos scored the only goal of the game in the second-half, but he was arguably lucky to still be on the pitch after an apparent stamp on an opponent in the first 45 minutes.

Crocker was commentating on the match for Sky Sports, and he was outraged by the incident, even demanding retrospective action to be aimed at the Colombia international. He then proceeded to spend the remainder of the match complaining about the 24-year-old.

It is fair to say the Gers supporters were absolutely livid at the pundit, and they took to the social media platform Twitter to share their thoughts.

Let’s see what the fans had to say about Crocker below

“@SkyFootball absolutely shocking, biased commentary from Crocker and Walker. For so called ‘neutral’ pundits, their constant reference to Morelos’ challenge and the need for the compliance officer to get involved was a disgrace! Why are they still commentating on Rangers games?”

Ian Crocker’s anti-@RangersFC bias is embarrassing. Relentless criticism of Morelos.

“It’s not really commentary is it folks? More of an agenda led vendetta by messrs Crocker and Walker against Morelos. @ScotlandSky”

“Ian Crocker has an unhealthy obsession with Morelos”

“Sort it out @ScotlandSky. Crocker and Walker constantly bleating and basically begging for action against Morelos last night was pathetic. I pay for balanced opinion not downright hatred.”

“”Goal from Morelos, who should’ve been sent off.” Sky’s coverage summed up by Crocker’s misery when Morelos scored. Not how intelligent Morelos was; dragging Porteous out wide to collect the ball, then cutting in to receive the ball onside and scoring. No. It was a witch-hunt.”

Exclusive: Pundit blown away by two Rangers men

In an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, Steve Howey has heaped praise on Rangers duo Allan McGregor and James Tavernier for their performances this season.

The former Newcastle and Manchester City centre-back waxed lyrical about McGregor and Tavernier when speaking exclusively to FFC earlier this week.

Veteran goalkeeper McGregor has quickly re-established himself as the first choice between the sticks since returning to Ibrox on a two-year deal.

And Tavernier, who has arguably been one of Steven Gerrard’s best and most consistent players, seems to have found an entirely new level over the past 12 months.

The club captain has now scored 17 goals this season as he continues to rack up astonishing numbers from right-back as Gerrard’s side edge closer to Scottish Premiership title glory.

When asked by Football FanCast to name Rangers’ best player this season so far, Howey went one step further than that, by saying that both players have been immense for Gerrard’s band of merry men.

Here’s what he had to say about McGregor and Tavernier when speaking exclusively to Football FanCast:

“With Rangers, the two players that have stood out for me this season – and all of them really have done very well, everyone’s chipping in – but Tavernier, some of the goals he has scored from set-pieces and Allan McGregor the goalkeeper (stand out) but, I think all of them have done very well.

“If you take Tavernier, for example. He was at Newcastle and this is why I’ve got such admiration for these players because ultimately, they’ve been rejected.

“We’ve seen so many good players who have been at clubs and have been released and not come back because they’ve let the rejection get to them.

“I mean, don’t get me wrong, the likes of Adam Armstrong, Ivan Toney and Tavernier have all suffered massive setbacks but they’ve come good.

“And again, I’m delighted for Tavernier, I think he’s been excellent this season.”

Tavernier has even managed to turn his domestic form into two goals and three assists in six Europa Lague appearances, whilst he’s clearly turning heads amid interest from clubs south of the border.

It’s no surprise, then, that his market value has soared, as he is currently valued at £7.2m via Transfermarkt, which is a dramatic increase in his market value last year.

This means that any potential move away from Ibrox won’t come cheap, with Gerrard reluctant to sell any of his key men in the January transfer window as he bids to stop Celtic from ten in a row.

Both men are two of the most seasoned and experienced members of the squad and it’s unlikely that the board would be willing to let both players leave halfway through the season, especially when they find themselves leading the title race at the top of the table.

Rangers fans will hope that the two men picked out by Howey continue to shine and lead Rangers to the title.

Spurs ace Ben Davies could miss Liverpool

According to Evening Standard journalist Dan Kilpatrick, Tottenham could be without Ben Davies for tonight’s Premier League encounter with Liverpool in another injury worry after he was taken off against Wycombe Wanderers in the FA Cup – coming as fellow left-back Sergio Reguilon looks set to miss the match.

Davies was hauled off after picking up a knock during Tottenham’s 4-1 victory away to the Championship side, and at the moment, it is unclear whether he will feature in north London on Thursday as Jose Mourinho gears up for a crunch clash (Evening Standard).

Spurs could miss Davies for Liverpool clash

Indeed, the 27-year-old is a doubt for the match this evening, but there is a glimmer of optimism in Kilpatrick’s update as Davies hopes to pass a late fitness test.

Whether he will be deemed able enough to take part remains to be seen, but for now, he is considered a doubt for Liverpool as Tottenham’s left-back options seem alarmingly thin.

Both Reguilon and Davies potentially being absent leaves little room for manoeuvre as far as Mourinho is concerned, with Japhet Tanganga emerging as an option if the Welshman indeed cannot feature.

Transfer Tavern take

The Lilywhites youngster has been deployed as a left-back before, but not this season as per Kilpatrick.

Spurs fans will be hoping Davies is passed fit, but right now he remains a doubt – coming as both Reguilon and attacker Dele Alli (football.london) look set to miss Liverpool.

Mourinho is certainly a fan of the player, who he described as ‘very intelligent’ back in October for his contributions as part of a back four (football.london), meanwhile pundit Darren Bent hailed him as one of the ‘standout’ performers of 2020/2021 after Spurs’ League Cup win against Stoke (Sky Sports via TBR).
