Windies crowd pleasers

Dozens of cricket fans waving Barbados, Jamaica, and Guyana flags, swarmed Kensington Oval yesterday afternoon as the West Indies, who had gone eight matches without a victory, finally broke the drought against India

Mike King06-May-2002Dozens of cricket fans waving Barbados, Jamaica, and Guyana flags, swarmed Kensington Oval yesterday afternoon as the West Indies, who had gone eight matches without a victory, finally broke the drought against India. The end came at 1:11 p.m. when Stuart Williams’ forcing back foot drive off Harbhajan Singh pierced the cover field for a boundary that provided the West Indies with a resounding ten-wicket win, achieved in three-and-a-half days.Victories these days for the West Indies are as rare as Sahara rain and more than 1 500 fans were on the ground for the post-match ceremony. They screamed themselves hoarse when their heroes came out on the players’ balcony with most of the adulation reserved for Guyanese Ramnaresh Sarwan and Shivnarine Chanderpaul, both of whom relished the chance to sign countless autographs.Sarwan snatched his first two Test wickets with his first two balls yesterday and Chanderpaul made an unbeaten 100 on Saturday, but it was the tall, Trinidadian fast bowler Merv Dillon, who earned the vote from adjudicator Peter Lashley as Man Of The Match.Dillon, who now has 90 Test scalps, gave the best performance of his 24-Test career, claiming eight wickets, four in both innings.Prime Minister of Grenada Dr Keith Mitchell and principal-elect of the Cave Hill Campus, Professor Hilary Beckles, were among a crowd of 8 000 that saw Carl Hooper pull off his third win in 15 matches as captain. It’s great to see the boys win. We have a good record at Kensington and I was always confident we would do well here. I don’t think we should make any changes though Williams and Gayle must know they have to perform, remarked one happy middle-aged man.Ravi Shastri, the former Indian allrounder, who is covering the series as a television commentator, was disappointed with the Indian performance. We just haven’t played well in this match. They just blew it on the first day when our batting was pathetic. I still think it will be a close series, he said.Raj Dhokia, an Indian lawyer, who lives and works in London, says he would like to see more fighting spirit from the Indians.Dhokia, who watched the Test match from the Sir Garfield Sobers Stand with his brothers: Vijay, Mahesh and and Shiv, told the DAILY NATION that 95 per cent of the Indian side were upper class lads, who didn’t need money from cricket to survive. Most of these guys have a nice, relaxed lifestyle. There is no incentive for these guys, they have got it made. They don’t need money from cricket, he said. All four brothers expressed disgust at the standard of umpiring in this match and throughout the series so far. They are all hoping that two new umpires are chosen for the Antigua Test which starts Friday.

Who could suffer if Everton hire Ferguson?

Whichever way you look at it, Duncan Ferguson is a legend at Everton.

He played 272 times for the Toffees and has managed the club on four occasions, taking interim charge of the club before Carlo Ancelotti was hired.

The Italian has now left the club for a second stint at Real Madrid but Ferguson rejected the chance to move with him.

Instead, he wants the Everton job on a permanent basis as Farhad Moshiri and co bid to find Ancelotti’s replacement.

There are a number of impressive head coaches in the frame to be handed the reins with the likes of Rafa Benitez, Erik ten Hag and David Moyes all on their shortlist.

Ferguson doesn’t possess the same managerial experience but he knows the club inside out and has a great affinity with the supporters.

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast last week, Dean Windass commented: “He’s a legend at the football club, he’s got blue blood running through his veins and he’s a very passionate man.

“Give Big Dunc a go, he did very well in temporary charge before Ancelotti. The fans love him, and the fans will be back next year.”

Whether or not the board view him as someone that can take Everton to the next level remains to be seen but if he does join, the club may as well bid farewell to Moise Kean.

The striker has had a troublesome spell at Goodison Park, scoring just four goals in 37 outings for the Toffees.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-everton-manager-and-transfer-news-ancelotti-moshiri-fonseca-howe-moyes” title= “Read the latest Everton manager and transfer news!”]

However, he’s taken French football by storm this term, finishing the campaign with 19 strikes after a loan move to PSG.

Described as “fearless” by Thomas Tuchel, the £25m signing clearly has immense potential. That being said, if Ferguson becomes the permanent manager an exit may grow closer.

He’s already been tipped to leave by various outlets and he doesn’t exactly have the greatest of relationships with Ferguson.

After all, it was the 49-year-old who provided Kean with one of the most embarrassing moments of his career so far.

The youngster was substituted on against Manchester United in December 2019 but lasted just 18 minutes before he was withdrawn by the manager.

Kean cut an extremely sad figure as he trudged down the touchline without a single exchange with Ferguson.

Speaking after the match, the boss said:I just needed to make a substitution to kill a bit of time.”

It was a decision that attracted staunch criticism. In the wake of that remarkable moment, John Arne Riise commented: “He’s destroying this young boy’s confidence.

“He doesn’t even shake his hand. Give him a hug – he’s a young boy. That is the worst thing you can do for any player but especially a young boy who doesn’t speak the language very well.”

Kean would only go on to start four more league matches that term before he was handed a loan spell with Kylian Mbappe and Neymar.

He’s shown what a huge talent he is away from English shores but it’s unlikely he’s going to have a future in Merseyside. Bring Ferguson into the equation and an exit looks even more inevitable.

Remaining at Everton would surely destroy him even more; he has to get out.

MCFC fans react to Laporte comments

Manchester City fans think Aymeric Laporte is leaving the club following his latest comments ahead of the Champions League final on Saturday.

During the 2018/19 campaign, Laporte was one of the Citizens’ best players as they won the Premier League title ahead of Liverpool by a single point. He played 35 times in the league (Transfermarkt) under Pep Guardiola as City conceded just 23 goals in the competition.

However, he suffered a serious injury last season, which massively curtailed his playing time, and he has been unable to reclaim his place since recovering as Guardiola has generally selected John Stones and Ruben Dias ahead of him. As a result, he has played just 16 times in the league this campaign.

Speaking prior to the final in Porto, £45m-valued Laporte (Transfermarkt) suggested he does not know what the future holds for him and mentioned his lack of playing time. The comments were shared on Twitter by @City_Xtra, and the City fans now think he will soon be leaving. The supporters took to the social media platform to share their thoughts.

Let’s see what the fans had to say about the Laporte comments below

Patient Dippenaar hopes for place in SA one-day side

“Every game is a must-win for South Africa. Obviously if we lose here and go2-0 down we put added pressure on ourselves, but we’re not thinking aboutthat right now.”South African captain Shaun Pollock may have been stating the obvious, but despite a relaxed net session on Tuesday morning, there is a steelydetermination to level the series when South Africa meet the West Indies inthe second of seven one-day internationals at the Antigua Recreation Ground. The South African selectors have one injury headache before Wednesday’sgame after Neil McKenzie’s hamstring trouble forced him off the field duringthe last-ball defeat at Sabina Park. He is expected to require a few moredays to recover fully, and even though he batted in the nets his place inAntigua at least looks likely to go to the patient Boeta Dippenaar.Dippenaar has spent much of the tour as a spectator, playing only in thewarm-up games and doubling as a stand-in wicket-keeper for Mark Boucher. Hehas done little wrong since a good season at home, where he scored hismaiden Test hundred, but was the unlucky man when Herschelle Gibbs returnedfrom his ban at the beginning of the year.”I haven’t heard anything yet,” Dippenaar said when asked about hispossible inclusion for the Antigua game, “but I’m preparing myself. I justwant to be ready when the chance comes. I’m looking forward to it.”It’s been very frustrating not playing as much as I would like. Whenthere are games to be played you’ve got something which drives you andmotivates you. At times it’s a bit difficult to keep going when it doesn’tlook as though you’re going to get a game.”But you never know, tomorrow might be a chance.”I’m feeling good, and have been hitting the ball well in the nets. Butit’s like with bowlers sometimes – you need to spend a bit of time out inthe middle to get some real confidence going. One game can change it all.”Dippenaar’s wicket-keeping role is not something for which he consideredhimself an obvious candidate.”It’s been different – and very hard work! I’ve discovered muscles inmy body that I never knew I had. Previously I’d only done about half a gamewhen I was 15, so it’s been a new experience for me.”South Africa (probable): Gary Kirsten, Herschelle Gibbs, Jacques Kallis,Jonty Rhodes, Boeta Dippenaar, Lance Klusener, Mark Boucher, Shaun Pollock,Justin Ontong, Roger Telemachus, Allan Donald.

HUGO NEVES – Repórter do Record (Portugal)

Eddie Howe to Crystal Palace ruled out

Crystal Palace have been handed a fresh blow in their quest to find their next manager…

What’s the word?

According to former Celtic winger Davie Provan, Eddie Howe won’t be going to the Eagles this summer as his move to Parkhead is a “done deal.” He told Go Radio (via Daily Record):

“I don’t think for a moment Dermot Desmond would have exposed himself to the possibility of being embarrassed by Eddie Howe. And Eddie Howe himself has chosen not to rule himself out. So reading between the lines I think there’s an agreement, I think it’s a done deal,” he said.

Provan later added: “I don’t think for a moment that Eddie Howe is going to take a Crystal Palace, I don’t think Dermot Desmond would leave himself open to that embarrassment.”

Huge blow

Only last month, Football Insider reported that the former Bournemouth manager was on Palace’s three-man shortlist and had even held talks with Steve Parish and the club’s hierarchy. If that’s true, then the Selhurst Park owner and CEO is in line for a devastating blow following these fresh claims that Howe is heading for the Glasgow giants.

The Eagles still do not know who will be in charge next season, as with Roy Hodgson’s contract set to expire, the 73-year-old veteran seems likely to be heading for the exit.

Palace were set to be boosted by the fact that Howe was ‘not close’ to any club and was waiting until the summer to decide his future, but the comments from Provan are hard to ignore.

The 43-year-old was largely the mastermind behind the Cherries’ rise through the leagues – across two stints on the south coast, he took charge of 454 matches, winning 42% of those. That is a better return than Hodgson at Palace, with the former England boss managing a poor win rate of just 33%.

Howe, a three-time winner of the Premier League’s ‘Manager of the Month’ award, managed to keep Bournemouth in the top flight for four straight seasons until their unfortunate relegation last year, but in reality, they were always punching above their weight under him.

To lose out on him is certainly a blow to Parish considering he was amongst his top three options. He will likely be gutted that the 43-year-old appears Celtic-bound.

AND in other news, Fresh twist emerges in Crystal Palace managerial hunt, it’s bad news for Parish…
