Dilan Markanday: Spurs’ next Dele Alli?

The Nuno Santo era could not have got off to a more perfect start for Tottenham Hotspur.

They sit top of the Premier League standings heading into the first international break of the season and have made it through the qualification stages of the UEFA Europa Conference League.

After sacking Jose Mourinho in mid-April, chairman Daniel Levy was reportedly on the lookout for an attack-minded head coach – one that can develop the club’s young prospects at the same time.

It’s still early days but Spurs are the lowest scorers in the top ten, though they are yet to concede a single goal after three successive wins. Nuno has also given an opportunity to payers like Japhet Tangana and Oliver Skipp, so there is that balance that Levy was looking for, in some respect.

You could argue that the Portuguese is lacking the sort of creative presence that can elevate Spurs’ game even more and perhaps he can kill two birds with one stone by looking to one of their more promising youth products.

Once again, it’s Harry Kane that sits near the top of the creativity charts, despite being their striker and only starting one game. Only one other player has averaged more than one key pass per game, as per WhoScored.

Nuno has trusted Dele Alli to start in a more advanced role in midfield but he’s yet to provide a key chance and is still some way off his 2016/17 form that saw him register 18 goals and seven assists in just one season.

Spurs’ next Alli could be found in Dilan Markanday, who just last week scored a hat-trick for the U23 squad.

According to the club’s official website, the 20-year-old gem is a ‘clever attacking midfielder who normally plays on the right’ – in some ways, this is similar to the Englishman under Mauricio Pochettino.

Furthermore, Markanday has earned a comparison to former academy star Marcus Edwards.

“Markanday has looked bright today. Have always felt he has a very similar running and dribbling style to Marcus Edwards,” football.london’s Alasdair Gold said. He also praised him when Spurs’ U19s faced Inter Milan in 2018.

“Inter are struggling to deal with Dilan Markanday. His dribbling and passing ability is pulling their defence and midfield all over the place.”

Spurs have only scored three goals in their opening three games, so it’s this sort of presence that is required in the no.10 role. Nuno should consider unleashing the U23 sensation and in doing so, he may well discover the next Alli in north London.

Top Scottish club faces bleak future

News comes of the possible demise of one of the country’s oldest and most prestigious clubs, Perth CC, is set to wind up

Cricinfo staff14-Feb-2009While Scotland prepare to play in the ICC World Cup Qualifiers, news comes of the possible demise of one of the country’s oldest and most prestigious clubs. Perth CC, which boasts Adam Gilchrist and Justin Langer among former players, is set to wind up.Founded in 1826, the club was at the forefront of Scottish cricket for many years, but according to a report in the Scotsman it has not got enough players to raise even one XI and its facilities have been repeatedly vandalized.”There is every chance we will go down the tubes, secretary and captain Graham Ferguson told the newspaper. “There’s no point in kidding ourselves we can continue on that basis.”This isn’t something that has happened overnight, but we have lost 11 or 12 of our first-team players to other clubs, our facilities are sub-standard, our membership doesn’t seem to want to get involved in the day-to-day running of the place and we are simply not functioning as a club, where there is any chance of keeping things going 10, 20 years from now.””We have looked at all the alternatives, and we are very sad to be in this position, but placing the club into abeyance, prior to the 2009 season, is firmly back on the agenda, and if the response isn’t there, we will have to wind things up.”

Ronaldo’s Arrival Won’t Stop United’s Haaland Pursuit

While Cristiano Ronaldo’s return to Manchester United has given the club’s Premier League title hopes a massive boost, the Red Devils still have an eye on their long-term future.

Although seemingly ageless, Ronaldo’s time at Old Trafford will inevitably come to an end, and reports are suggesting United see Norwegian star Erling Braut Haaland as the future superstar for the club.

United Can’t Miss Out on Haaland Window

With Haaland seemingly committed to Borussia Dortmund for the remainder of the season, it looks like it will be the ultimate decision time for the 21-year-old striker next summer. A move to England appears to be the most likely destination as Spanish powerhouses, Real Madrid and Barcelona, have other targets and financial constraints in place.

Bayern Munich, who are one of the favourites in the Champions League predictions for the European crown this season, look to be the main competitors to the English clubs for Haaland’s coveted signature. However, it remains to be seen if the former Molde striker would consider staying in Germany, or whether the player, who originally hails from Leeds, wishes to return to his homeland.

It’s no secret that United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would like to be reunited with Haaland after the pair worked together in Norway at Eliteserien outfit Molde. Both manager and player have since gone on to better things and it’s more than likely that Solskjaer’s presence at Old Trafford could play a part in helping United beat their rivals in gaining Haaland’s allegiance.

However, this is no certainty as there’s far from a shortage of takers in the forward, with the likes of Chelsea, Tottenham, Liverpool and Manchester City all being credited as having an interest.

Ronaldo Can Help Lure Haaland

While there would be some questions on how Ronaldo and Norway international Haaland could play in the same starting lineup, there are suggestions that the Portuguese superstar might also have a role in luring the BVB starlet to Old Trafford. Haaland has previously stated Ronaldo has long been a “role model” for him, and the chance to work alongside the former Real Madrid and Juventus forward might be an opportunity too good to turn down.

United have an abundance of attacking options at the club and may well have to look at moving players on before attempting to land Haaland. The Red Devils boast the likes of Ronaldo, Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood, Jadon Sancho, Anthony Martial and Edinson Cavani among their attacking ranks this season. Uruguayan veteran Cavani might well play a fringe role this term following Ronaldo’s arrival, while there’s plenty of ongoing speculation regarding Martial’s long-term future at United.

With a more than reasonable £68 million release clause thought to be in Haaland’s current Dortmund contract, the battle’s expected to be fierce to try and land one of the brightest talents in Europe. With Solskjaer and Ronaldo at Old Trafford, United might just have the edge going into next summer’s transfer talks.

IPL auction shifted to February 6

Players will lose 20% of their match fee – on a match-by-match basis – if they don’t find a place in the playing XI from the next season

The IPL has taken some significant steps to protect the interests of its eight franchises, including the addition of a performance clause to its player contracts that will see players lose 20% of their match fee – on a match-by-match basis – if they don’t find a place in the playing XI from the next season. However, this clause will be applicable only to new contracts that will be signed from now on.This was one of the key developments at a meeting, involving franchise representatives and IPL officials, which ended in Bangkok on Sunday. The meeting also resolved to hike the players’ purchase cap from US$5 million to $7 million – this cap will not be applicable to the money that will be spent during a one-month trading window starting December 15 for existing players.”This is a very significant development for the franchises,” sources said. “This means that trading can be done for existing players with absolutely no budgetary limits.”The IPL, meanwhile, announced in a press release that it will hold its next players’ auction in Mumbai on February 6. It had earlier been tentatively scheduled for January 29. The IPL also confirmed that the maximum number of foreign players in each squad has been increased from 8 to 10, though those in the playing XI will stay at four. The meeting agreed to scrap the system of flying in players as temporary replacements, an allowance that saw cricketers like Dwayne Bravo, the West Indian allrounder, make a fleeting appearance in the first season early this year. But in a concession to the teams that had picked such players last time, the press release said that “all teams that had temporary replacements will have the first right to pick those players”.”The extra $2 million to purchase players is essentially for the new auction,” sources said. “This will go a long way in levelling the playing field, especially with many of us expecting the English players to be available. The 10-player cap has also brought clarity to the field because there was an original limit of eight and then it was stretched to nine.”According to the sources, franchise can now offload players during the trading window – with the player’s consent – but they will have to bear the difference to the player in case he is sold for less than his current fee. “On the other hand, if a player goes at an increased price, the difference will be shared by the selling franchise and the player,” they said. The details of this arrangement are not known yet.Franchises have also been assured more visibility on the ground, in terms of in-stadia visibility during matches, “while not infringing on the rights of the central sponsors”.The performance clause, incidentally, is also open to existing players but only if they sign new contracts. “It is doubtful how many of the existing players will agree to sign a new contract,” the sources said. “But the idea behind the move is clear. It is a step for the future and will ensure that the money a franchise pays to a player is linked purely to performance, and nothing else.” As per the previous arrangement, a player only needed to be “fit and available for selection” to be entitled to his full fee.The meeting also heard views from various service providers involved with the first season of IPL to “ensure a better experience allround next time”. “But on the whole the Bangkok meeting was held in an excellent, open atmosphere and it has left the franchises satisfied with the clarity achieved,” the sources said. The 2009 IPL season has been tentatively scheduled to start from April 10.

The hearing for Shoaib Akhtar’s appeal against his ban has been postponed because the judge was not available and a new date will be announced next week, a lawyer for the Pakistan Cricket Board said.”Lahore High Court Justice Syed Zahid Hussain was not available to hear the case as he was attending the swearing-in ceremony of the president of Pakistan in Islamabad,” PCB lawyer Taffazul Rizvi told .Shoaib publicly criticised the PCB for offering him a retainership rather than a contract in February, a final act in a litany of offences, for which he was banned for five years. The ban was later reduced to eighteen months, and then temporarily suspended by the Lahore High Court.Despite the troubles caused by that outburst, Shoaib lashed out at PCB officials again during a television show in India. “Some people [in the Pakistan cricket administration] want to force their will and also want to save their egos,” he told . “In the process they have hurt not only me but also the country and Pakistan cricket. However, at the end of the day, I am back and I will play for Pakistan and god willing Pakistan will be back on the winning track.”His latest comments drew flak from former Test captain Intikhab Alam, who is also on the board’s governing body. “I am surprised at the statement he has made about the PCB because he was supposed to go to England and play county cricket, not land up in Mumbai for a dance show and also give irresponsible statements,” he told .Shoaib is currently playing for Surrey a bid to regain his match fitness. The PCB’s ban limited him to only one first-class match this year.

Howey endorses Manchester City move for Lewandowski

Robert Lewandowski to Manchester City is a “very good shout”, says the club’s former defender Steve Howey.

City are desperately trying to sign a new striker this summer but are having trouble landing target Harry Kane from Tottenham.

As per multiple reports, including from The Guardian, the north London outfit’s stance is Kane is not for sale.

It means City may soon have to look elsewhere. And, according to the Daily Mail, that elsewhere could be German giants Bayern Munich.

The outlet reported earlier this month that Pep Guardiola is weighing up a reunion with his former forward Lewandowski as the Premier League champions continue to struggle to strike a deal with Spurs for Kane.

For Howey, the Poland international could be the perfect alternative. He exclusively told TT:

“I think he would cost less and he’d probably be asking for slightly less in wages as well. I mean, that’s a very good shout.

“They haven’t really got an out-and-out goalscorer like [Sergio] Aguero, that’s what he did. He was just born to score goals, but Lewandowski is born to score goals too.”

It was another ridiculous campaign by Lewandowski last season after he managed to score 48 goals in all competitions. Whether Kane is off the table or not, the 32-year-old is definitely an option City should be considering.

Ponting warns about ditching IPL salary cap

Ricky Ponting believes dumping the Indian Premier League’s salary cap could be detrimental to the competition

Ricky Ponting believes dumping the Indian Premier League’s salary cap could be detrimental to the competition. Talk has begun about stopping the limit, which is currently at US$5million per team, but Ponting, who played for the Kolkata Knight Riders in the opening stages of the event, said the move might make the tournament less competitive.”I have certainly heard there may be no salary cap next year, but I’m not sure if that will be good for the IPL,” Ponting said in the Australian. “The more I’ve thought about it, it might be detrimental to the whole set-up.”We want good, competitive cricket with lots of international players playing good, close games against one another. If they go ahead with no salary cap, a lot of that might go out the window.”One window Ponting wants is for a break in Test and one-day internationals so the IPL can be held without interruptions. “I really do think they can manage it well and have the IPL as something that is going to help the game, and not just be extra money coming in for the international players,” Ponting said. “What it has done already is attracted new audiences to the game and more audiences to the game … Overall it should make cricket a better thing.”

Leeds United back in for Rangers’ Ryan Kent

Leeds United appear to be back in for Rangers star Ryan Kent this summer amid speculation over a move last year.

What’s the story?

It was confirmed in the summer of 2020 by Gers boss Steven Gerrard that the Premier League side had a bid rejected by the Ibrox outfit, and that Leeds’ initial bid was nowhere near their valuation.

Then, Victor Orta admitted that a deal for the winger was never likely to happen because the Scottish club simply didn’t “want to sell him”, and that it was “never their plan to put Kent in the market”.

Now, The Athletic claim that Marcelo Bielsa’s men retain an interest in the 24-year-old as they look to strengthen their wide options ahead of the new Premier League season next month.

Bielsa will be buzzing

Given that Leeds wanted him last summer, and were only unable to do so because Rangers dug their heels in and refused to let him go, Bielsa will surely be buzzing at the news that the Whites remain interested in him.

Former Rangers striker Kris Boyd has waxed lyrical about the winger saying: “There’s Ryan Kent who is phenomenal – he gets you off your seat. His numbers have increased season after season. Even if the team are not at the level we saw at the start of the campaign, he is still a threat. He is so comfortable with the ball – it is like has superglue in his boots!”

And, speaking back in May, former Premier League and Leeds striker Carlton Palmer backed a move to Leeds for Kent, saying exclusively to FFC: “Listen, Champions League or no Champions League, the place to play is in the Premier League. If he got the opportunity to go and play in the Premier League, I’m sure he’ll go and play in the Premier League.

“He’s got maybe an opportunity to play in the Premier League. For me, as a manager, as a player, the place to be now or the place to play is in the English Premier League.”

While a permanent deal for Jack Harrison has already been completed, and Raphinha will no doubt be a starter on the right flank, Bielsa is in need of some quality strength in depth outside of those two.

And in a player who bagged 13 goals and provided 15 assists last season, and was actually fouled more times per game than Raphinha, the Leeds boss can find exactly that.

It’s exactly why this latest update is sure to have the Leeds boss buzzing, he’d love to have Ryan Kent in his squad.

Meanwhile, Leeds are closing in on a major agreement…
