Tottenham: Fans react as Kyle Walker-Peters returns to training ahead of Palace clash

After the sale of Kieran Trippier this summer, Tottenham currently find themselves slightly short in the right-back department.

Serge Aurier has failed to cement himself in the first-team, leaving 22-year-old Kyle Walker-Peters as the club’s first choice full-back, despite him only making six league appearances for the club last season.

The England U21 international started all three of Spurs’ opening league fixtures, but missed the recent north London derby with a hamstring injury sustained against Newcastle at the end of August.

He is expected to return to the fold for the club’s visit of Crystal Palace this Saturday (as per The Sun), however, in a game Mauricio Pochettino’s men desperately need to win considering they haven’t picked up three points since their opening day victory against Aston Villa.

@HotspurRelated tweeted that Walker-Peters is set to return to first-team training this week ahead of Saturday’s match, though news of his potential return didn’t exactly go down too well with some fans on Twitter, who clearly feel like Aurier should be given more of a chance to prove himself this season.

Spurs fans, would you like to see Aurier given a chance this season or have you been impressed with Walker-Peters? Let us know by commenting below!

Southampton’s switch to a 4-2-2-2 system could be bad news for James Ward-Prowse

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

In just four league games so far this season, Ralph Hasenhuttl has used a 3-5-2 system in the first two matches, and a 4-2-2-2 formation in the two most recent outings – both had differing results.

With the 3-5-2, Southampton lost 3-0 to Burnley and also lost 2-1 to Liverpool, looking shaky at the back and also fairly toothless up top – their only goal came courtesy of Liverpool’s Adrian kicking the ball at Danny Ings.

However, with the 4-2-2-2 system, the Saints picked up a 2-0 win over Brighton – the Seagulls did have 10 men for a large portion of the game – whilst also recording an impressive 1-1 draw against Manchester United last time out.

Whilst the likes of Jannik Vestergaard enjoyed a much improved performance in the new formation against Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side, one man did not in both that game and the match at the Amex – it could even be argued that he is set to become a casualty of Hasenhuttl’s tactical switch.

James Ward-Prowse.

The Southampton academy graduate is predominantly a centre-midfielder, although he can play on the right.

It is out on the right where the 24-year-old has been playing of late, and he really isn’t faring too well in the position.

Ward-Prowse played on the right of midfield in the win over Brighton and the draw against United, but was ineffective in both games.

The Englishman failed to record a single shot or dribble against the Seagulls, whilst also being dispossessed twice and having one unsuccessful touch.

Against the Red Devils, Ward-Prowse was just as ineffective, taking zero shots and completing zero dribbles, whilst recording just one key pass.

For a player of his undoubted quality – he scored seven goals from midfield last term under Hasenhuttl – much more is expected of the usually so impressive midfielder, but he really isn’t supplying the goods right now.

With Moussa Djenepo, Nathan Redmond and Michael Obafemi still to come back from injury, competition for places will be rife after the international break and Ward-Prowse could be the man to miss out due to his ineffectiveness in the 4-2-2-2 system.

Arsenal’s Reiss Nelson needs to provide more after passive performance against Burnley

[ad_pod ]

Unai Emery has plenty to be happy about so far after a promising start to the season for his Arsenal side.

The Gunners have won their first two games of the Premier League campaign, first beating Newcastle United 1-0 at St. James’ Park before defeating Burnley 2-1 at the Emirates Stadium.

The former Sevilla boss has so far given some of the club’s younger players plenty of time to impress, with Joe Willock, Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Reiss Nelson all having started in the first two games.

Find out the truth about why David Luiz joined Arsenal in the video below…

There is some hype surrounding the latter, who looked good on loan at Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga last term. However, he will need to provide a lot more going forward following an offensive display against the Clarets in which he did little of note.

It would even be fair to say that he was a passenger throughout his time on the field, and it came as little surprise when he was replaced at half-time by Nicolas Pepe. During those 45 minutes, he created just one chance and managed one shot.

It was in terms of dribbles and crosses where he was particularly disappointing, though. Not even once was he able to beat his man, and he also failed to complete a cross. Bearing in mind that he is a winger, those numbers are quite frankly not good enough.

All in all, Nelson finished with a rating of 6.22, which was by far the worst of the starting XI. With Alexandre Lacazette and Aubameyang both scoring and record-signing Pepe surely in line to start soon after Saturday’s cameo, Nelson will need to hope that he gets another chance to show his worth in the coming weeks.

Manchester United icon Patrice Evra makes a bold statement on Instagram

[ad_pod ]

We are now into the final days of the 2019 summer transfer window for all the Premier League teams and things could still be looking to heat up immensely.

On Thursday at 5pm, all the deals that haven’t been concluded will have to either be scrapped or pushed back for January, so the teams are working hard to get as much over the line as possible.

[ad_pod ]

With all of that in mind, Patrice Evra, Manchester United’s icon, has taken to social media and

/B03MUqUnpQ0/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link” data-lasso->Instagram to share a bold message to all the agents of the footballing world.

Evra boldly proclaimed how Manchester United are no one’s bank and that only the players who respect the badge and are dying to win trophies with the Red Devils are free to join the club.

This was most likely aimed at players who are seemingly just trying to get into the team for the money, and the ones that don’t really want to be there for the right reasons.

Be that as it may, United still have until tomorrow to conclude all and any possible deals coming either in our out of the club.

It remains to be seen whether they are done with their business or not.

West Ham involved in protracted Gomez negotiations

[ad_pod ]

West Ham United Director of Football Mario Husillos is involved in protracted negotiations with Celta Vigo over the transfer of Maxi Gomez and is likely to remain as such until the final days of the transfer window, sources have told Football FanCast.

The Hammers are attempting to restructure their squad this summer and Manuel Pellegrini is keen to secure at least one striker in this transfer window.

Pablo Fornals has already been signed from Villarreal to add depth to the attacking midfield positions but the Irons currently have just Marko Arnautovic and Javier Hernandez as their senior forwards.

Chicharito, however, has been made available for transfer and if he departs, the club will be left with just Arnautovic and utility man Michail Antonio as their striking options.

As such, Pellegrini has instructed the club to once again pursue a deal for Gomez, who has a €50m (£44.7m) release clause in his contract.

The Hammers initially identified the Uruguay striker as a target in January amid concerns that Arnautovic could leave for China.

Of course, he ended up signing a new contract and that development put paid to their plan of signing Gomez, with the money recouped from selling the Austria international set to be reinvested, wholesale, into the acquisition of the 22-year-old.

He scored 13 goals in La Liga as Celta avoided relegation – if they had gone down, his release clause would have halved – and Husillos is now attempting to negotiate a deal that could see Gomez link up with Arnautovic in east London.

However, sources have confirmed to Football FanCast that the Irons first face the issue of Gomez’s release clause, with his current club keen to see his asking price paid in full.

Secondly, the player would prefer to remain in Spain and there is a belief at the Hammers that Celta are merely holding out in the hope that a rival bidder will emerge. Valencia tabled an offer earlier this summer but it was not entertained, while West Ham had a £25m bid rejected.

Gomez, sources have said, would like to play for one of Spain’s “big three”: Barcelona, Real Madrid or Atletico Madrid.

However, West Ham do not believe that the trio will register any sort of interest in him, and are confident that negotiations can be drawn to a favourable conclusion, eventually.

Indeed, one source within the club told FFC that they expect the deal to drag into the final few weeks of the transfer window, with another even claiming that it may be done on deadline day.

It remains to be seen if a compromise can be reached over a fee but there is a belief that Husillos can strike an agreement for a lower figure than the £45m clause in Gomez’s deal.

Pellegrini has explicitly requested the signing of the forward and FFC has been told that “what Pellegrini wants, Pellegrini gets”.

Aston Villa Transfer Roundup: Konsa confirmed, Engels talks, Randolph on radar

[ad_pod ]

Aston Villa have been very busy during this transfer window, but what does the next month or so have up its sleeve for them? Today’s Villa transfer roundup gives you a confirmed arrival, talks for a Ligue 1 defender and interest in a Championship goalkeeper.

Konsa signs

Aston Villa have confirmed the signing of Ezri Konsa from Brentford. The Villans have reportedly paid £12m for the 21-year-old defender. Manager Dean Smith said of the purchase, “Ezri fits the profile of the type of player we were searching for.”

Advanced negotiations for Engels

According to L’Equipe Aston Villa are in advanced negotiations with Stade Reims in regards to their centre-back Bjorn Engels. The 24-year-old Belgian could join the Premier League outfit very soon the report adds.

Randolph on Villa radar

The Telegraph is reporting that Villa are looking at Middlesbrough’s Darren Randolph in their search for a new shot-stopper. The 32-year-old Republic of Ireland international played in every single league game for the North East club last campaign.

The Chalkboard: Hayden would become by far the best midfielder at West Ham United

[ad_pod ]

Isaac Hayden has been identified as a possible West Ham United target after the club missed out on the signing of Andre Gomes, per ClaretandHugh.

Hayden is a solid if unspectacular midfield player and the report claims that he would cost £15m in this transfer window, but would he improve the Hammers’ midfield?

On the chalkboard

The club currently have Mark Noble, Declan Rice, Pedro Obiang and Jack Wilshere as their main options in the centre of the pitch.

Per WhoScored, Hayden averages 2.9 tackles per game in the Premier League, 1.6 interceptions, 1.1 clearances and is dribbled past 0.7 times. He also has 0.9 key passes in each game, along with a pass completion rate of 79.4%.

By comparison, Noble makes 1.5 tackles, 0.7 interceptions, 0.4 clearances and is dribbled by 1.2 times each game. His key passes rate is 0.7, while his pass completion rate is 85.3%.

Rice, a far more defensive talent than Noble, averages the same number of tackles as Hayden per game, 1.5 interceptions, 1.6 clearances and is dribbled past 1.5 times each game. His key pass stat is 0.6 while his pass completion rate is 86.4%.

Obiang fares even worse: 1.7 tackles, 0.5 interceptions, 0.6 clearances and being dribbled by once mean that he is worse than Hayden in every conceivable defensive area. His key passes number is a mere 0.3 but his pass success rate is 80%.

Wilshere, who has barely played any football for the Hammers, averages 0.9 tackles and interceptions while he does not even have a clearance stat. He is dribbled by 0.5 times per game, makes 0.6 key passes and has a completion rate of 89.8%.

Hayden, then, may well be the man to improve Manuel Pellegrini’s midfield.

Sort out his radar

Hayden needs to be more accurate with his distribution.

Other than that, he has a higher tackle rate than every other West Ham player including England international Rice and is only bettered in one area: clearances, by the former Chelsea youngster.

This is a player who would come in and instantly improve the Hammers but he simply has to learn how to pass the ball more successfully.

It is all very well winning it back but if he is merely going to give it away again, there isn’t much point.

If he does rock up in east London, he will need some accuracy training; other than that, he appears to be Pellegrini’s ideal midfield player.

He will add steel and assiduity and could even be Mark Noble’s long-term replacement.

At £15m, he’s an absolute snip.

Gallery: The best moments from Daniel Sturridge’s Liverpool career as exit confirmed

[long_read]

It’s official.

Daniel Sturridge will be leaving Liverpool after a six-and-a-half year stay at Anfield, where he has arguably enjoyed the prime years of his career.

After showing flashes of his potential with Chelsea, the England international’s career really took off at Anfield, where he managed to score an impressive 68 goals in 160 appearances, finding the back of the net every 2.4 games on average.

His partnership with Luis Suarez in the 2013/14 season, where Sturridge managed to hit 22 goals in 29 league games as the Reds came within touching distance of the title, was arguably his best campaign as a professional footballer.

You can relive Liverpool’s Champions League celebrations in glorious 2D thanks to the guys at 442oons in the video below…

Sadly, injury problems stopped the 29-year-old recording an even more prolific strike rate, although his time as a Liverpool player did end romantically with a Champions League trophy – his second after winning it with Chelsea.

There have been a fair few, but let’s take a look at a handful of Sturridge’s best moments in a Liverpool shirt…

[snack_break title=”Scoring just eight minutes into his debut against Mansfield in the FA Cup”]

Sturridge found the back of the net just minutes into his first ever appearance for Liverpool, netting a well-taken effort against Mansfield in the FA Cup. Not a bad way to start things off.

[snack_break title=”Notching an exquisite double against Everton in the Merseyside derby (Ignore the other bloke)”]

The Englishman was at the top of his game when Everton travelled to Anfield in 2013/14, where Sturridge scored two excellent goals – he could’ve had a hat-trick if he hadn’t missed a late penalty!

[snack_break title=”Scoring a world-class chip vs West Brom to announce himself as a truly top-tier Premier League player”]

This was the strike that truly proved Sturridge was one of the league’s finest forwards and a player brimming with confidence. A shot didn’t even look on, but Liverpool’s No.15 found the top right corner with an audacious chip which worked perfectly.

[snack_break title=”Netting in the Europa League final with a delightful outside-of-the-boot curler”]

Sadly, this goal isn’t remembered as much as it should be after Liverpool lost 3-1. Despite the scoreline, Sturridge’s amazing curler with the outside of his boot was one of the finest goals you’ll see in a cup final.

[snack_break title=”Finally winning a trophy with Liverpool in his last ever game for the club”]

Sturridge’s excellent goalscoring form throughout his time at Liverpool was finally rewarded with silverware at the last possible opportunity. It was the second Champions League title he has won after picking up a medal for Chelsea’s win in 2012.
