Crystal Palace: Fans react to Lukaku absence

Chelsea will be without new signing Romelu Lukaku against Crystal Palace on Saturday afternoon, according to The Athletic.

And, as to be expected, the forward’s expected Stamford Bridge absence has had a lot of Palace fans talking on social media.

The Blues announced the arrival of the Belgium superstar on Thursday evening in a deal worth £97.5m.

He returns to Chelsea after leaving for Everton back in 2014 and has signed a five-year deal with the Champions League winners.

Patrick Vieira will take charge of Palace for the first time competitively against Thomas Tuchel’s side, who look set to be without Lukaku.

David Ornstein suggested that Lukaku’s second Chelsea debut could come against Arsenal on August 22 but he is not available for the opener against Palace.

Bulls fight back after battling to 208

Queensland finished the first day in Perth on a high after their batting line-up again struggled to post a decent total. On a day when 13 wickets fell, Western Australia finished at 3 for 33 following a pair of late strikes to Ryan Harris, which left Luke Pomersbach yet to score as the only not-out batsman.Harris ended the day with the important removal of the opener Liam Davis (32), who had incredibly scored all the Warriors’ runs apart from a solitary leg-bye. He also picked up the nightwatchman Steve Magoffin following the departure of the debutant Wes Robinson, who was bowled by Ashley Noffke for a duck.It evened up a contest that had seemed to belong to Western Australia as they sent the Bulls in and knocked them over for 208. Magoffin made the perfect start and had Queensland at 2 for 3 having had both openers, Ryan Broad and Greg Moller, caught in the cordon.A steadying partnership from Andrew Symonds and Clinton Perren followed, although Symonds had a couple of lives in his 43. Perren, who was making his first Sheffield Shield appearance for the summer, top scored with 58 before handing Robinson the ideal beginning to his first-class debut.Robinson had Perren caught and two balls later added the Queensland captain Chris Simpson, who failed to score. The Warriors’ other debutant, the fast bowler Paul Davis, also enjoyed his first four-day outing with 3 for 48 having been called in from outside the 12-man squad when Arron Crawford hurt his groin in the warm-up.Western Australia were also without Ben Edmondson for part of their time in the field after he also suffered a groin problem, although he is a chance to bowl in the second innings. The injuries left the Warriors so undermanned that their assistant coach Trevor Penney had to take the field as a substitute.

Champions Twenty20 League formally launched

The venue for the Champions Twenty20 League is yet to be decided but Lalit Modi has no objection to the tournament being held in England © AFP

The BCCI-backed Champions Twenty20 League has been formally launched with a commitment from the men in charge that it would give priority to the ICC’s Future Tours Programme. The launch, which followed a meeting among top officials of the BCCI, Cricket Australia and Cricket South Africa in Mumbai, confirmed most details previously announced but left the tournament’s venue yet to be confirmed. In a curious twist, there was also a feeler sent out to England, which in recent days appeared to have fallen out with this version of the Champions League in pursuit of its own. The doors are still open for England to join, IPL commissioner Lalit Modi said, and he remained “positive” with regard to their participation in the US $6 million event. The concession to the FTP allows Michael Hussey and Matthew Hayden to play Australia’s warm-up match from October 2 to 5 before the first Test against India begins in Bangalore on October 9. Hussey and Hayden are also part of the Chennai Superkings squad, one of the Indian teams in the Champions Twenty20 League.”One of the regulations of the proposed Champions League is that all international players who have FTP commitments at that time are required to play international matches and not the league matches,” Modi – who attended the meeting along with Cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland and Cricket South Africa’s Gerald Majola – said. “There are one or two players impacted by that and those players will be excused from the IPL commitment.”In the new arrangement, Cricinfo has reliably learnt, Hussey and Hayden could conceivably play a few games for Chennai, then play the tour game for Australia, and return for the Champions Twenty20 League final if their team makes it that far.

The Fine Print
  • When – September 29 to October 8
  • Where – Not finalised. Likely venues are in north India (Delhi, Mohali, Jaipur) with Bangalore as an option. Long-shot choice is England
  • Who – Top two teams from India (Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings), Australia (Victoria and Western Australia) and South Africa (Dolphins and Titans); two other teams will be picked from among England, Pakistan, West Indies, Sri Lanka and New Zealand
  • How much – The prize money pool is $6 million
  • Format – The inaugural tournament will have eight teams divided into two groups. After the preliminary league matches, the top two from each group will play the semi-finals and the winners will clash in the final. There will be 15 matches in all

There is still a question mark over the venue, however. Modi had earlier said the tournament would be held in Mohali, Delhi and Jaipur but that decision seems to have been put on hold. Instead Modi said he had no issue with a statement by IS Bindra, the principal adviser to the chief executive of the ICC, who said earlier this week that he would like the Champions Twenty20 League be staged in England because it would have “spectators from all different countries, multi-racial crowds for all teams, it is the most cosmopolitan place.””Ideally we would like to conduct the games at the venues announced originally but there are offers from other people and the members decided to examine all the options and not to decide right now,” Modi said. “September is a good time to be playing in England and I don’t think any of the partners would have any objections to that.”Ironically, there is still no clarity over the participation of an English team in the tournament, though the issue was discussed at the meeting. Middlesex are England’s Twenty20 Cup winners but if they reject the offer Modi said teams from New Zealand, Sri Lanka and West Indies were willing to complete the eight-team line-up – currently comprising the top two domestic teams from India, Australia and South Africa, along with Sialkot, Pakistan’s Twenty20 champions.”We’ve extended an invitation to the Middlesex and we are hoping to hear positively from the ECB”, Modi said. “We have always wanted this to be a global competition. England and the ECB have contributed to the game of cricket we would continue to endeavour to have England as part of the inaugural season of Champions League.” The BCCI had rejected an offer from the ECB to join England’s version of the Champions League to be held in Sharjah this October.

Liverpool fans react to Minamino loan links

Southampton have reportedly made enquiries into the potential loan signing of Liverpool winger Takumi Minamino, according to talkSPORT.

The Japan international spent the second half of the 2020/21 season on loan with the Saints and scored two goals in ten appearances for Ralph Hasenhüttl’s side as they finished 15th in the Premier League table.

It appears as though he’s made a good impression on Southampton, who are reportedly keen to agree a deal to sign Minamino for another spell at St Mary’s this term.

It remains to be seen whether Liverpool are willing to listen to offers for the 26-year-old at this stage of the transfer window as Jurgen Klopp prepares for the upcoming Premier League campaign.

Minamino has been hailed as a ‘lively character’ by Football Insider pundit Kevin Campbell but has struggled to make his mark at Anfield, scoring just four times in 31 appearances and being limited to four Premier League starts for the Reds since joining in January 2020.

Plenty of Liverpool supporters took to social media to issue their thoughts on Southampton’s rumoured interest in signing Minamino, with some disparity among the reactions.

Take a look at the best of the replies from the Anfield Watch Twitter account below…

LFC fans hail Oxlade-Chamberlain display

Some Liverpool supporters have hailed Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s performance against Osasuna, as the Reds finished pre-season in style.

Jurgen Klopp’s side were excellent against the La Liga side on Monday night, easing to a fully-deserved 3-1 victory. It was Liverpool’s last pre-season friendly of the summer, with the real football getting underway on Saturday as the Reds open their Premier League campaign at Norwich City.

The Osasuna game saw a number of players shine, from Ibrahima Konate at centre-back to Kostas Tsimikas at left-back and Takumi Minamino and Roberto Firmino in attack.

Another who also impressed greatly was Oxlade-Chamberlain, who looked full of energy and almost scored a stunning long-range effort in the first half.

Klopp claimed that the midfielder was “on fire” after the game and it wasn’t only the Liverpool manager who recognised the influence he enjoyed.

Rangers miss out on Harry Wilson

Rangers had been tipped to sign Harry Wilson earlier in the summer but Steven Gerrard won’t be reunited with the Welshman at Ibrox after he completed a move to Fulham recently.

What’s the word?

Rangers were heavily linked with the Liverpool winger in 2018, with reports claiming that Gerrard was very keen to add him to his squad having managed him during his spell working in the academy at Anfield.

When it became clear that the Reds were keen to cash in on the 24-year-old permanently this summer after a number of loan spells away from the club, he was once again touted as a potential option for the Gers.

Former Rangers man Michael Ball tipped his old club to make a move for the Wales international earlier this year, saying: “Steven’s got that connection with him. He knows of him, so that personal relationship could be a bonus. The money, we’re not too sure what they have to spend, so it all depends if any players move out as well at Rangers.

“If [Alfredo] Morelos moves on, the big money that they’ll get would give Rangers the opportunity to bring Harry and maybe a few others in.”

Should Rangers have signed Wilson?

Wilson has regularly emphasised his class in loan spells away from Liverpool but has never really established himself as a regular in Jurgen Klopp’s squad, perhaps due to the world-class talent that the German has available to him at Anfield.

Last season saw Wilson join Cardiff City on loan and he impressed with his performances in the Championship, contributing seven goals and 11 assists in 37 appearances and averaging a solid 6.96 rating from WhoScored for his endeavours.

It is therefore no surprise that he has earned himself a permanent move to the Championship this summer, with Fulham paying £12m to sign him earlier this week as they look to secure an immediate return to the top flight.

[freshpress-quiz id=“593776”]

The “outstanding” winger – as hailed by Roy Keane – could have been an excellent addition to Rangers’ squad ahead of their upcoming Champions League qualifying campaign. Given Gerrard’s relationship with him, you could definitely argue that Ross Wilson should have acted faster to try and bring the Welshman to Ibrox this summer.

India dominate England comprehensively

For a nation that heaps expectations on its cricketers, India’sdominance over England at Colombo was hugely satisfying, tosay the least

Erapalli Prasanna23-Sep-2002For a nation that heaps expectations on its cricketers, India’sdominance over England at Colombo was hugely satisfying, tosay the least. Coming after the equally exciting win at Lord’s inthe final of the NatWest Trophy, this game just goes to provethat India are now a daunting one-day outfit, and if anything willinstill fear into the hearts of their opponents, it is the battingthat Sourav Ganguly and Virender Sehwag showed off on Sundayevening.
© ReutersGanguly, in my opinion, has started enjoying his cricket more oflate, but Sunday must have provided more than the usual shareof enjoyment and entertainment as he sat gleefully at the otherend while Sehwag went berserk. A smiling, encouraging captainis always a big asset, especially to the younger players, for hetakes the pressure off by a few opportune words.Once Ganguly and Sehwag had added 192 runs for the firstwicket in double-quick time, the match was virtually in the bag.Sehwag was the first to be dismissed, but not before he hadsealed a knock that is best described as inspirational. Hisdaredevil style of hitting through the line and on the rise -andhis astounding talent at succeeding – is quite, quite remarkable.England’s bowlers, especially Andy Caddick, were perhaps guiltyof trying to bowl too fast at Sehwag, for the increased paceonly made the youngster’s job easier, enabling him to use thepace to his own advantage. On a belter of a track like thePremadasa, there is little point in just trundling up and down, and more variations must be tried to throttle the batsmen.Sehwag in particular has a tendency to play a few loose shotsearly in his innings, and England’s bowlers failed woefully tocapitalise on that. With the line and length they were bowling, they only had a chance to get Sehwag if they obtained somemovement off the track. But as I said, given the pitchconditions, that was not likely to happen.Nasser Hussain could really not have anticipated such anonslaught, and in fact he would have been quite happy once hisbatsmen had put 269 on the board. Given India’s earlybreakthroughs, it was quite a feat by England to reach thatcompetitive total. Ashish Nehra and Zaheer Khan bowled brilliantfirst spells, and the early exit of Marcus Trescothick – always apivotal man for England – must have given the Indians a hugeboost.Hussain got out to a really atrocious stroke, and his battingmade the Indian quicks look twice as fast as they really were. That shot was not at all warranted in the situation, and if this ishow England is going to play in Australia, I am not sure they willbe able to make too many dents on the opposition. But I did likethe attitude and approach of young Ian Blackwell, refreshinglydifferent and positive as compared to his experiencedcolleagues.I must say, though, that India’s main spinners were a hugedisappointment. Both Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh areexperienced enough at the international level, and there is littleexcuse for not being on top of their game, especially on subcontinental tracks that always hold promise for spinners. I havealways emphasised the importance of turning and flighting theball, and neither Kumble nor Harbhajan managed to do enough ofthat on the day.On current form, the South Africans will surely find the Indianbatting too hot to handle. With Sehwag and Ganguly striking topform, there isn’t much any bowling attack can do, and the onlything India must guard against is complacency – a quality thatseems to creep in often, especially after a hugely one-sidedgame.

Liverpool linked to Nicolo Barella

Liverpool have been linked with a big-money move for Inter midfielder Nicolo Barella following a string of impressive performances.

What’s the story?

According to Italian outlet La Repubblica, the Reds are preparing a £60 million offer for the 24-year-old machine as they step up their search for Gini Wijnaldum’s replacement.

The Italian outfit’s poor financial situation is well known, and Liverpool could be looking to take advantage by securing themselves a top player this summer.

Klopp will be elated

Liverpool have been heavily linked with a move for Atletico Madrid dynamo Saul Niguez in recent weeks, but the Spain international now appears to be closing in on a transfer to Barcelona, with Antoine Griezmann moving in the opposite direction.

However, it appears as though the Anfield outfit have already moved on from their efforts to sign Saul, targeting Euro 2020 winner Barella instead.

The diminutive midfielder has excelled since arriving at Inter back in 2019, scoring seven goals and providing 21 assists in 87 appearances for the Nerazzurri, winning the Serie A crown along the way.

His standout performances have earned several plaudits in his homeland, including Claudio Marchisio.

“As an ex-midfielder, I cannot help but admire the constant growth and talent of Nicolò Barella,” said Juventus legend Marchisio last season.

“Such a young player, already mature and complete. Inter fans are fortunate, but even more fortunate is our Italy squad.”

Therefore, news that Liverpool are lining up a substantial offer for Barella will surely leave Jurgen Klopp feeling elated.

Wijnaldum’s decision to join French giants Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer has left a substantial gap in the club’s engine room, one that will be extremely difficult to plug.

Having said that, Barella is certainly someone capable of filling the Dutch international’s shoes. As per WhoScored, he recorded 1.3 key passes per league game last season, 1.6 tackles and one dribble, placing him in the top three for each metric when compared to his teammates.

Liverpool will be hoping to close the gap on Premier League champions Manchester City next season after finishing a whopping 17 points behind them in 2020/21, and signing Barella would certainly provide a significant boost to their chances of doing just that.

Windass urges Ward-Prowse to reject Villa and stay at Southampton

Despite controversially being left out of the England squad, former Hull City ace, Dean Windass, has advised James Ward-Prowse to stay at Southampton amid interest from free-spending Aston Villa.

Many fans were shocked to see Ward-Prowse excluded at the expense of Ben White in Gareth Southgate’s England squad, however, after the performances of both Declan Rice and Kalvin Phillips, the England manager appears to have silenced his critics once again.

Something that is less of a surprise is that Ward-Prowse is being linked with a move away from Southampton, with Dean Smith’s Villa reportedly wanting to bring the set-piece specialist to Villa Park this summer.

The £75,000-per-week midfielder’s creativity and dead ball ability would certainly lift pressure off Jack Grealish’s shoulders, but he should reject any advances from Villa to stay with the Saints, according to Windass, who spoke exclusively to Transfer Tavern:

“I can’t see Ward-Prowse leaving Southampton for Villa because, in my opinion, I think Southampton will finish above Villa next year.

“Why would he want to leave? He’s captain of Southampton and he’s a big fish in their pond so like I said earlier on, why would he want to go?”

Villa look to be making a big splash in the transfer market this summer having already confirmed the £33million signing of Emiliano Buendia who is coming off the back of yet another title-winning season in the Championship with Norwich City.

Southampton certainly ended up disappointing last season with a relegation battle, but some quality additions on the flanks could turn them into serious contenders in the top-half of the table.
