Brighton & Hove Albion: Seagulls join transfer race for £30m-rated Odsonne Edouard

Brighton have joined the transfer race for £30m-rated Celtic striker Odsonne Edouard, according to a transfer report in The Times.

The report stated that the Seagulls are the latest club to show an interest in the Frenchman, whom Hoops manager Neil Lennon hopes will remain in Glasgow for another season but has been deemed unlikely to sign a new contract at Celtic beyond his current deal which expires in 2022. Therefore, the Scottish champions may be open to selling him prior to then.

Edouard netted a hat-trick in Celtic’s first Premiership match of the season last week, following on from the 27 goals that he struck in the 2019/20 campaign. He has been more than just a penalty box poacher, too, with an impressive tally of 19 assists last season as well.

While there may be an inclination among some cynics to dismiss him as a flat-track bully in a league that his club have dominated since 2012, the 22-year-old has proven that he can rise to the big occasion – he scored three times in the Hoops’ Europa League campaign, including in both legs of the last 32 tie against eventual quarter-finalists FC Copenhagen, as well as in both league fixtures against arch-rivals Glasgow Rangers (as per TransferMarkt).

Brighton have not been reluctant to spend big on attackers who they feel would given them a greater threat up front – they lavished £15.3m on Jurgen Locadia, £17.1m on Alireza Jahanbakhsh and £18m on Leandro Trossard, with their joint-record transfer fee of £20m paid to Neal Maupay last summer (as per TransferMarkt). A return of 10 goals in last season’s Premier League from the ex-Brentford man has shown the latter fee to be money well spent.

It would be quite a show of faith in Edouard if Brighton were to not only smash their transfer record, but to raise it by 50%, in order to sign a striker who ex-Celtic manager Martin O’Neill described as the Hoops’ best attacker since the legendary Henrik Larsson, who scored 242 goals in 315 matches at the club prior to leaving in 2004.

That comparison illustrates the massive esteem that the 22-year-old has earned from his sharp-shooting feats at Parkhead and, if Brighton could see off rivals for his signature and bring him to the Amex Stadium, it would represent a massive statement of intent from the Sussex outfit.

Glasgow Rangers: Paul Heckingbottom raves over Kemar Roofe signing

It’s been a very busy week for Glasgow Rangers as they have brought two new strikers to Ibrox. One was 23 year-old Cedric Itten, and the other was 27 year-old Kemar Roofe.

Supporters might know more about Roofe as he has played in England for clubs like Leeds United and Oxford United before he moved to Belgium side Anderlecht, per Transfermarkt.

When someone new signs, many in the media give their opinions on whether they believe the transfer was a good decision or not and what they think about the player.

One person who has been discussing Roofe signing for the Gers is Paul Heckingbottom, who managed the striker during his spell in charge of Leeds United.

Speaking to The Scottish Sun about Roofe, Heckingbottom said: “It’s a great bit of business for Steven Gerrard. That’s a statement signing from Rangers, very impressive. I’m certain he’ll do well in Scotland, and the Rangers fans will love his approach.

“I wish Kemar well, he’s a good lad and a top professional. He’ll enjoy the size of Rangers. He’s been at Leeds and Anderlecht, so going to Ibrox won’t faze him at all.

“He will relish the pressure and expectation. I’m really pleased for him with this move.”

It’s hard to disagree with Heckingbottom here, Roofe has been at some big football clubs, and therefore he should adjust easily to the pressure and expectations at the Gers.

In Belgium, he played 16 times, and scored seven goals whilst picking up three assists, whilst in the 2018/19 season at Leeds, he managed 15 goals and two assists in 34 appearances, per Transfermarkt.

The fact that in his last two seasons he has nearly scored one goal every two games bodes very well for the Scottish side as it highlights he is very clinical despite the pressure of needing to perform at his last two clubs.

Hopefully he will be able to continue this good goalscoring record of late at the Ibrox, as fans of the club will be hoping to win the title this campaign.

Being praised by his former boss Heckingbottom, who has also managed Hibernian in the Scottish Premiership, shows the quality the forward has and it will be exciting to see how he does this season.

Phil Hay sheds light into Leeds’ summer transfer plans

Leeds United’s recruitment since Marcelo Bielsa took the reigns at the club has been nothing short of impressive. It’s hard to disagree when they sit top of the Championship standings a year after crashing out of the playoffs. That’s two top-three finishes under the Argentine.

And the west Yorkshire outfit could well be a Premier League side next term. If the season cannot be resumed, then the EFL will decide the final table via an unweighted points-per-game system which sees Leeds go up as champions – but this depends on the PL confirming that there will be relegations.

It means that this summer their moves in the transfer market will be huge as they can’t become a one-season wonder after a 16-year absence from the top-flight.

Just look at how things have gone for Aston Villa after they spent around £120m on new players yet find themselves embroiled in a relegation scrap.

This week The Athletic’s Phil Hay has shed some light on their plans and offered up potential targets. He said:

“A portion of the club’s transfer money and the budget set aside will be taken up by the conversion of loans into permanent deals. Leeds are already committed to signing Helder Costa permanently from Wolves. They are set on taking Jack Harrison from Manchester City and Illan Meslier from Lorient and have options to acquire both. They are also obligated to sign Jean-Kevin Augustin from RB Leipzig (for a fee in excess of £15 million) although that might be open to discussion if Augustin is in two minds about whether he wants the move. He hasn’t found his feet yet but he came with Bielsa’s blessing in January.

“It’s obvious that if Leeds can’t retain Ben White they’ll need another first-rate centre-back. They also have to make sure that they’re properly resourced at left-back. Manchester City’s Yan Couto, a right-sided Brazilian, is a player I’ve heard them strongly linked with.

“I’m told that the targets Leeds had before the pandemic haven’t changed. But nobody is quite sure what the post-COVID market will look like or how it will operate.”

He claims that the club will set aside money to try and keep hold of some of their successful loan stars such as Man City’s Jack Harrison and Lorient’s Illan Meslier. They are also, of course, obligated to buy Jean-Kevin Augustin and have to fork out for Helder Costa.

They could well try for Ben White too.

Interestingly, Hay also adds that they could go back to City to nab young Brazilian starlet Yan Couto on loan but most importantly, that their plans haven’t changed because of the pandemic.

It just remains to be seen what sort of market there is when – and if – football returns to normality.

The centre-back position will be one of Marcelo Bielsa’s biggest challenges ahead of next season as he faces the prospect of losing Gaetano Berardi and White, meaning only skipper Liam Cooper is the only senior option in the role.

Liverpool fans love Virgil van Dijk’s inspiring message

It was a difficult win for Liverpool against Crystal Palace on Saturday in the Premier League.

The Reds squeezed past the Eagles 2-1 thanks to a late Roberto Firmino winner after Wilfried Zaha has leveled things up at 1-1. They were not at their best, but it was another huge three points for the Reds as they continue their march towards the Premier League title. That now sees them top the table by eight points from Leicester City after having won 12 of their first 13 matches of the league campaign.

Virgil van Dijk was in top form on the day, at least according to the club’s supporters. After the match, he also had some wise words, as well. He said: “If you are prepared to suffer setbacks, because in the games that will happen, it’s about how you react and so far we have been doing that pretty well.”

These are words that could have been used on a number of occasions so far this season for the Anfield outfit, yet they continue to lead the way. The comments were shared again on Liverpool’s official Twitter page on Tuesday, and they brought in plenty of reaction from the club’s supporters.

They took to the social media platform to share their thoughts, and you can see some of the best comments from the social media platform below.

Newcastle swoop for Jarrod Bowen could mark the end for Miguel Almiron

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

If there is one player in the Premier League who deserves a goal just for simply running himself into the ground, then Miguel Almiron would be that man. The Paraguay international’s commitment to the cause cannot be questioned, with former Newcastle ace Lee Clark desperately pleading for his hard work to be rewarded.

“He’s got such a brilliant work ethic for the team, the reports you get from the training ground is that he works ever so hard on the pitch and I think everybody that is associated with the club are willing Almiron on to get this goal.”

Clark’s comments came about two months ago, and unfortunately for the Magpies, he is still yet to break his goal-scoring duck for the club. It all means he has now gone 22 games without finding the back of the net, and serious questions must now be raised as to whether Newcastle should think about cutting their losses.

And if The Northern Echo’s report on Steve Bruce’s transfer stance on Jarrod Bowen is true, it could very well be the beginning of the end for Almiron’s time at St James’ Park. According to the publication, the Magpies boss is continuing to recommend that the club attempt to sign the Hull winger either in January or next summer. And based off his stats to start this current season, it is easy to see why.

The 22-year-old has no such goal-scoring problems as compared to Almiron, netting 10 times in 17 games – including five in his last five Championship matches. A right-winger capable of playing down the middle (remind you of anyone?), Bowen’s under-lying numbers also make for impressive reading. He averages 3.5 shots, 1.1 key passes and 1.9 dribbles per game, with an average match rating of 7.31 as per Whoscored.

Newcastle man Almiron however, averages just 1.8 shots, 0.6 key passes and 0.9 dribbles per game, whilst his match rating is down at a miserable 6.35. With Bruce appearing to favour this five-at-the-back formation with Joelinton as the sole striker, there is no room for a number ten – a position the £18m-rated man could perhaps have played were Bowen to join.

Instead, it would be a straight shoot-out to take up the wide berth on the right-hand side, and on current form, Bowen looks like he would win that battle hands down. And that could very well mark an early end to Almiron’s career at St James’ Park.

Man Utd fans drool over Brandon Williams after impressive Brighton display

Making his first start in the Premier League, Brandon Williams arguably could not have enjoyed a much better outing for Manchester United on Sunday afternoon.

The 19-year-old has been one of the main beneficiaries of first-choice left-back Luke Shaw being ruled out of action, and has now already made seven appearances for the first-team.

Against Brighton at the weekend, the teenager produced an impressive display for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side, providing a useful presence going forward, whilst still remaining on top of his defensive duties.

As per Sofascore, he won five duels, made four tackles and also contributed one key pass, and was perhaps unlucky not to get on the score-sheet thanks to a Mathew Ryan save.

After seeing his display against the Seagulls, United fans flooded to Twitter to voice their thoughts on the academy product.

Many supporters of the Manchester side hailed the teenager’s performance, and insisted that could well spell the end of Luke Shaw’s time at the club.

Some Red Devils fans simply raved about his showing, with one fan in particular claiming he has “already eclipsed Roberto Carlos’ career”.

Everton fans can’t get enough of Tom Davies after West Ham United display

Everton fans have expressed their love for Tom Davies after the midfielder put in a great performance against West Ham United in what was his first start in the Premier League this season.

Prior to the game, Everton fans were keen for the academy graduate to start after poor performances from Morgan Schneiderlin so far this season.

The supporters got their wish and were not disappointed with what they saw, with some of them hoping he even gets a chance to captain the side very soon.

The partnership between Davies and Gomes was impressive throughout and fans hope to see more of this in the future, as the duo made 34 and 37 passes in the game respectively – more than any other Everton player.

The Englishman also received a 7/10 rating for his display against the Hammers, per Liverpool Echo, and bearing in mind the injury problems Fabian Delph and Jean-Philippe Gbamin have faced lately, Davies has an ideal opportunity to cement his place in the starting XI.

And, if the reactions to his performance against West Ham are anything to go by, fans will certainly be hoping this is the case.

Here’s what some of them have had to say…

Tottenham fans furious with Mauricio Pochettino over Lucas Moura snub

A man who will forever go down in Tottenham’s history books for his dramatic Champions League hat-trick against Ajax last season, Lucas Moura hasn’t exactly enjoyed the brightest of starts to the current campaign.

The Brazil international has featured six times in the Premier League this season, but has played just 240 minutes in the competition. Against Brighton on Saturday afternoon, the 27-year-old was once again restricted to a place on the Spurs bench, and he only came on with 17 minutes to go.

In the short time he was on the pitch, the speedster registered two shots on target, and completed two of his attempted dribbles.

After seeing the Brazilian’s cameo appearance, Spurs fans flooded to Twitter to voice their fury at the situation surrounding the forward.

Many Lilywhites supporters revealed they couldn’t believe why the 27-year-old simply hasn’t been given a chance to shine by Mauricio Pochettino this season.

Some fans of the north London side criticised the Spurs boss for his treatment of the former PSG man, and one fan in particular labelled it as a “disgrace”.
