BCCI disciplinary panel asks Modi to appear

The BCCI’s three-member disciplinary committee has sent a letter to Lalit Modi asking him to appear before it on July 16 to defend himself against the charges made by the board. Modi’s demand to remove interim IPL chairman Chirayu Amin from the committee will also be considered at the hearing.”You are requested to be present in person to address the disciplinary committee on the said issues after which the disciplinary committee/its members shall decide the issues raised,” the letter said. However, Modi’s lawyer Mehmood Abdi would not commit to his client’s presence at the meeting as the Bombay High Court is due to hear Modi’s petition asking it to quash the BCCI’s proceedings against him on July 14. “Many things can come to pass between now and July 16,” Abdi told Cricinfo. The BCCI voted to ratify the charges against Modi and refer the case to its disciplinary committee at a special general body meeting held in Mumbai last week. At the same meeting, Jyotiraditya Scindia was added to the three-member disciplinary panel to replace BCCI president Shashank Manohar, who had recused himself from the case. Modi had accused Manohar and board secretary N Srinivasan of harbouring personal grudges against him and insisted neither of them should be involved in deciding his case. The third member of the committee is board vice-president Arun Jaitley.Following the decision, Modi’s lawyers sent a legal notice to the BCCI, claiming that Amin may have a grudge against their client, and should therefore be replaced on the panel, as Modi was the person who disclosed publicly that Amin was part of a consortium led by Pune-based construction company City Corporation that made an unsuccessful bid for the two new franchises this year. Modi has also asked the court to appoint an independent person or panel to judge his case.

Celtic: Liverpool want Ben Doak

Liverpool are looking to snap up versatile Celtic youngster Ben Doak, according to The Daily Record’s Scott Burns.

The Lowdown: Doak profiled

Doak is just 16 years of age and was recently on the bench for Ange Postecoglou’s first team against St Johnstone prior to the winter break.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-copy/” title=”Celtic updates!! (Copy)” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Transfermarkt have him classified as a midfielder, FlashScore as a forward and The Glasgow Evening Times as a full-back or a winger, making Doak an extremely versatile player.

He is yet to pen professional terms at Parkhead, though, and it seems as if he could be the latest Hoops starlet to move on before making a senior Celtic debut.

The Latest: Burns’ claim

Burns shared an update regarding Doak for the Daily Record on Saturday afternoon, claiming that the Reds are looking at a compensation deal for the 16-year-old.

However, Celtic are trying to stop a move to Merseyside and are aiming to convince the teenager to agree a long-term contract in Glasgow.

The Verdict: Not ideal

The Hoops have lost a number of talented youngsters over the years, with Leo Hjelde a recent example of a player to depart without making a senior appearance for Celtic before going on to make a first team breakthrough for Leeds United.

Mitchel Frame is another Parkhead academy starlet who has been linked with a Premier League switch, and it seems as if Doak could also now leave.

The pull of the Premier League appears to be too much for these young talents to resist, but hopefully CEO Michael Nicholson and Postecoglou can persuade Doak to commit his future to Celtic.

Wolves backed to seal Dael Fry signing

Wolves are ‘very interested’ in making a move for Middlesbrough centre-back Dael Fry this summer, according to transfer expert Dean Jones.

The Lowdown: Fry impressing for Boro

The 24-year-old is enjoying another impressive season for Boro, making 19 appearances in the Championship and helping his side sit seventh in the table.

Fry also tasted victory away to Manchester United in the FA Cup last week, as he prevented Cristiano Ronaldo from scoring and kept him largely quiet throughout. The Boro beast recording a team high 7.9 match rating, via Whoscored, starting in the middle of a back three against the Portuguese superstar.

The 6 foot 1 ace has been linked with a move to Wolves in the summer, as Bruno Lage eyes up potential new signings.

The Latest: Wolves back to make signing

Speaking to Give Me Sport, Jones confirmed Wanderers’ interest in Fry, claiming Scott Sellars and co are indeed ‘looking’ at him:

“Dael Fry and Tavernier are obviously making headlines at the moment following Middlesbrough’s great win.

“Both of those players will be available in the summer if Middlesbrough don’t manage to win promotion. So, there are a lot of Premier League clubs looking at these two players, Dael Fry, in particular, Wolves, Brighton, West Ham and Southampton are all very interested in him.”

The Verdict: Good for squad depth

Fry may not be someone who would come in as a guaranteed starter, given his lack of Premier League experience, but he is a dominant presence who has won a mammoth 4.2 aerial duels per game in the league this season.

With Romain Saiss and Willy Boly now in their 30s and Conor Coady edging towards that milestone, however, the Englishman could be a future starter for Wolves.

At 24, Fry is at a great age in terms of his peak being ahead of him and he may simply be a player who is now too good for the Championship and is ready to make the step up.

Warne disagrees with Akram's ball-tampering claim

Wasim Akram, the former Pakistan fast bowler and current bowling coach of the Kolkata Knight Riders, has said players in the IPL have been actively tampering with the ball, making it difficult for batsmen to sight it in the later stages of the innings. Akram said he has spotted bowlers rubbing red soil on the ball in places like Mumbai, Rajasthan and Ahmedabad once the floodlights take effect, thereby reducing its visibility when the batsmen are looking to accelerate.”I won’t name anyone but I have seen quite a few cricketers who have been rubbing mud on the ball and that is also tampering,” Akram told espnstar.com. ” If umpires are not watching then I don’t know who is. In this IPL, umpires should look for players who are putting mud on the ball because you can’t alter the state of the ball with anything.”Around the 18th, 19th over in places like Rajasthan, Mumbai or Ahmedabad where there is red soil it is difficult to see the ball under lights and by putting the mud on the ball these players are trying to contain the batsmen or get wickets.”However, Akram denied that rubbing mud on the ball would result in reverse swing. He added that the practice of spinners vigorously running their hands over mud before bowling does not amount to tampering. “That is different, that is just to get some grip on the ball but here someone is just going berserk rubbing the mud on the ball,” he said.Akram’s claims have been denied by Shane Warne, the Rajasthan Royals captain. “I don’t agree with it. I have been hearing this for the first time. You better ask Akram. Maybe he is an expert on this,” Warne said.Akram took over his position with the franchise at the start of this season and is the only Pakistani involved in the IPL. One of the team’s strike bowlers, Ishant Sharma, has struggled in the tournament, picking seven wickets from as many games at an expensive economy rate of 9.44 and conceding 33 runs per wicket. Akram admitted that the fast bowler was struggling to find his rhythm but backed him to bounce back.”He is out of rhythm but is working extremely hard. He just needs a couple of good games and the rhythm will be back,” Akram said. “Ishant feels his run-up is not smooth and the rhythm is not there. He just needs to bowl in the nets, which he is doing, and which will help him get the rhythm back. He is getting wickets but in T20 it is difficult to regain form because, unlike Test matches and ODIs, there are just four overs bowled here and that too on dead tracks.”He said a county stint would help Ishant immensely. ” I think he will be playing for Hampshire this season. And that will improve his bowling and organisational skills because in England he will be alone,” Akram said. “When I was 21, I used to get up at one o’ clock because at this age you tend to sleep late and he does the same which is fine with me. But in county cricket, he won’t get time to rest so much because he will be traveling and bowling everyday. In the process his bowling muscles will get stronger which will help increase his pace.”When asked about up and coming fast bowlers who have impressed him in his coaching stint, Akram singled out the Under-19 left-arm seamer Jaidev Unadkat. “This young kid in our side, Jaidev Unadkat, is the one to watch out for. He is lean like I was when I was 17-18, he can swing the ball both ways and he is hard working. I think we will hear about him in about a couple of years.”

Celtic: Jota could be fourth and final January addition

Celtic could make on-loan winger Jota their fourth and final January addition, according to Football Scotland’s Mark Hendry.

The Lowdown: Japanese trio

The Hoops have already begun working on their January business, with Ange Postecoglou looking to add three Japanese players to his injury-hit squad.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-19/” title=”Celtic updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Terms have reportedly been agreed for midfielders Reo Hatate and Yosuke Ideguchi, whereas Celtic also want to bring in forward Daizen Maeda and are confident of doing so.

The club’s early 2022 business may not stop there, though, with rumours of Jota’s loan possibly becoming permanent surfacing earlier this month.

The Latest: Permanent Jota move?

Football Scotland journalist Hendry shared a Celtic-related transfer update on Wednesday morning, suggesting the Hoops are not interested in Gremio midfielder Fernando Henrique.

Within their report, they reiterated that Celtic want to bring in Hatate, Ideguchi and Maeda before facing Rangers on January 2, with Jota’s permanent Parkhead move possibly their fourth and final winter window addition.

The option to buy fee for Jota, labelled as a ‘game-changer’ by Alex McLeish, stands at £6.5m, which could see him become the club’s most expensive signing under Postecoglou ahead of Kyogo Furuhashi’s £4.86m summer switch.

The Verdict: Enough?

Celtic have plenty of attacking injuries to deal with at this moment in time, one of which is Jota, with full-backs Josip Juranovic and Adam Montgomery playing on the wing against Ross County on Wednesday. [SofaScore]

Postecoglou has also relied heavily on Callum McGregor, David Turnbull and Tom Rogic in the middle of midfield, so two new additions should be enough for the second half of the season.

Four permanent signings in January would continue Postecoglou’s Parkhead rebuild after 12 additions in the summer and should give him plenty of options to choose from as Celtic look to chase down rivals Rangers.

Conte set for Spurs boost amid contract claims

Tottenham Hotspur boss Antonio Conte is in line for a huge boost after a major behind-the-scenes update emerged on the future of first-choice goalkeeper Hugo Lloris this weekend…

What’s the word?

As preparations for their Premier League clash against Brighton and Hove Albion on Sunday were abruptly put to a halt, it has been revealed the north Londoners have opened talks with the Frenchman over a contract extension, as per Football Insider.

The 34-year-old’s current £100k-per-week deal is set to expire at the end of the season and it’s believed, according to an inside source, that he is keen to commit to fresh terms that would take him into his late 30s at the club.

Lloris is settled with his family in north London and is also thought to believe that there are good times ahead under the Italian.

Spurs are keen to tie him down before the new year, when the veteran shot-stopper is free to talk to foreign clubs and even sign a pre-contract elsewhere.

Conte boost

This should come as a massive boost to Conte, who has selected the 136-cap France international in all but one of his games in charge, and as club captain, he serves as a big influence in the dressing room.

It also means that the 52-year-old head coach will not have to target a new option between the sticks, when there are much bigger problems to solve, such as their lack of solid defensive options at centre-back, his lack of alternatives to Harry Kane or the need for a creative playmaker.

Lloris is currently Spurs’ longest-serving player, having racked up 388 appearances since arriving from Lyon in August 2012. And he was named skipper by Mauricio Pochettino back in 2015, so it’s clear to see that he’s been a crucial player for the club over nearly a decade.

Much of the Lilywhites faithful will be overjoyed by this latest development from Hotspur Way as recently, many fans were discussing the prospect of their leading glovesman remaining past the current campaign.

“Hope he stays” and “seems sensible” were just two reactions relayed by Spurs-Web.com this week.

Therefore, many around N17 will be buoyed by this behind-the-scenes update, not at least Conte, who clearly is a fan of his goalkeeper. This will come as a big boost to him, should the Frenchman agree to an extension in the coming weeks.

Spurs eye dream Conte defender in January

Tottenham Hotspur retain an interest in signing Nikola Milenkovic ahead of the January transfer window…

What’s the word?

That’s according to Italian outlet Calciomercato, who claim Spurs manager Antonio Conte is an admirer of the Fiorentina colossus, though they will face competition from the likes of West Ham United, Manchester United and Juventus.

Valued at £18m by CIES Football Observatory, the Serbia international is a target for the north Londoners this winter, with his current contract set to expire in 18 months time.

It remains to be seen how much a move for Milenkovic would cost.

Conte’s dream defender

The Viola colossus has all the attributes to be a perfect signing under Conte and if sporting director Fabio Paratici and chairman Daniel Levy can seal his signature, then they could well form a frightening duo in north London.

Spurs could well be in need of additional centre-backs, too, with Cristian Romero facing a pretty long stint on the sideline. There won’t be many better options out there this winter than Milenkovic, and he could well be an ideal option alongside the Argentine in the future, particularly under Conte.

Milenkovic ranks inside Fiorentina’s top six players and is arguably one of their best on the ball, averaging a passing accuracy of 90.8% – the second-best of any player to start ten or more league games.

This would suggest that he’s more than capable of being a reliable ball-playing option in defence for Conte. Furthermore, he offers a ruthless edge, also averaging 1.9 tackles and 1.3 interceptions per game, via WhoScored.

Once likened to Premier League great Nemanja Vidic, the Serbian should have no trouble in adapting to the English top-flight, especially if he turns out to be half the player of the ex-United powerhouse.

“Milenkovic is better than Vidic with the ball at his feet, and he is much calmer on the field,” Mozzart journalist Dejan Stankovic told ESPN in 2018. “He is the most talented centre-back Serbia have had since Vidic, and they definitely have one thing in common – [they are] both are fearless.”

Meanwhile, he has also been dubbed a “beast” by former Partizan head coach Ivan Tomic.

On the above evidence, Conte would surely love to seal a move for Milenkovic. He had the best defence in Serie A with Inter Milan last season, on their way to the league title, and the Fiorentina star has all the skills to be a perfect fit in his Italian-based system over in N17.

Conte and Milenkovic would be a frightening prospect heading into the remainder of the campaign.

Leeds backed to make move for Dele Alli

Leeds United should ‘seriously consider’ making a January move for Tottenham midfielder Dele Alli, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The Lowdown: Alli’s fall from grace

Alli was one of the hottest properties in English football at one point, scoring 18 Premier League goals in the 2016/17 season when he was only just out of his teens.

He has been hailed as ‘fantastic’ by former Arsenal hero Ian Wright but his stock has fallen rapidly of late, with only six league starts coming his way this season and none since the arrival of Antonio Conte.

It means a January exit could potentially be on the cards, and Leeds are desperately in need of a new midfielder, with Phil Hay believing the plan is to go shopping for one in January after the injury to Kalvin Phillips.

[freshpress-quiz id=“375277″]

The Latest: Leeds backed to sign Spurs man

Speaking to Give Me Sport, O’Rourke claimed Alli is an option Victor Orta and co would have to weigh up if the opportunity arrived to sign him:

“Not to rule out Leeds, either. I think if Dele Alli was there and he wanted to go to Leeds, it’s something they would have to seriously consider.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-28/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Worth a gamble?

Alli’s reputation has undoubtedly diminished over time but he is such a talented footballer and he may just require a fresh challenge.

He is still a player with 37 England caps to his name, not to mention scoring 51 goals and registering 37 assists in 179 Premier League appearances.

Granted, he wouldn’t be a signing to accommodate the loss of Phillips to injury, given his attack-minded nature, but Marcelo Bielsa may believe he could get the best out of him, and he would certainly add quality depth to a side whose injury concerns are becoming a full-blown crisis.

Start time 1430 (1230 GMT)No sleepless nights for Tendulkar this time•Associated Press

Big picture

For once, India and Pakistan will not be playing on an island. India-Pakistan matches are usually separate events within the main event, oblivious to the larger picture of the tournament, but this game doesn’t seem to be the usual matter of life and death. For once, this match, though the first big clash of the Champions Trophy in terms of traditional rivals coming face to face, is more about the cricket. What’s helped is the tight draw in the tournament format. Pakistan, who have been more vocal in setting up the match (Shahid Afridi, Umar Gul and Younis Khan have been quoted on how badly they want to beat India), will know only net run-rate can keep them out of semi-finals if they win this match. India, blighted by injuries to Yuvraj Singh, Virender Sehwag and Zaheer Khan, have a year and a half of good work done in ODIs to defend. A loss in their opening match will leave them needing to beat Australia and possibly run-rate calculations to go their way.The build-up for this match, though, has been different from the last time the two teams met at the same venue, in the 2003 World Cup. Sachin Tendulkar then lived the match a year in advance. Everywhere he went, he was reminded of the match. He said he couldn’t sleep properly for 12 nights leading into the game. March 1 was a day people of two countries lived for. If you had asked Tendulkar of this match six months ago, he would have – rightly – not known of any such fixture. Before March 1, 2003, the teams had not played each other for three years. In last three years now, they have played 17 ODIs, six Tests and two Twenty20s.Hype or no hype, once the match begins, Centurion – and the rest of world, wherever the match is telecast – will be engrossed. Albeit slowly, the atmosphere will build. It can’t be such a bad thing if a cricket match is a cricket match and not a war.

Form guide

(last five completed matches, most recent first)India – WLWWL
Coming off a tri-series win in slow-and-low Sri Lanka, they will need to quickly adjust to livelier pitches in South Africa. Centurion, though, has assisted spin and makes for a smooth transition.Pakistan – WWWLL
The bowling unit looks almost perfect, as it showed in the win over West Indies. Batting is the weak link, and they need bigger contributions from senior batsmen.

Team news

Gautam Gambhir and Younis are fit and ready. But for India the good news is offset immediately by the injury to Yuvraj. They should go with the same batting line-up that won in Sri Lanka, except for Gambhir replacing Yuvraj and Rahul Dravid moving down the order. They will be tempted to play two spinners at SuperSport Park, which has brought much joy to Ajantha Mendis and Roelof van der Merwe in the first two matches. The bowling has been cause of worry for India, and those last three slots will be the most discussed.India (probable) 1 Gautam Gambhir, 2 Sachin Tendulkar, 3 Rahul Dravid, 4 Suresh Raina, 5 MS Dhoni (capt/wk), 6 Virat Kohli/Dinesh Karthik, 7 Yusuf Pathan, 8 Harbhajan Singh, 9, 10 and 11 three out of Ishant Sharma, RP Singh, Ashish Nehra and Amit Mishra.Who does Younis replace? Misbah-ul-Haq seems the most likely candidate; Umar Akmal would like to think he has earned another match after his Man-of-the-Match performance against West Indies. There seems no need to tinker with the bowling combination.Pakistan (probable) 1 Imran Nazir, 2 Kamran Akmal (wk), 3 Younis Khan (capt.), 4 Shoaib Malik, 5 Mohammad Yousuf, 6 Umar Akmal, 7 Shahid Afridi, 8 Rana Naved-ul-Hasan, 9 Mohammad Aamer, 10 Umar Gul, 11 Saeed Ajmal

Watch out for…

Pakistan bowlers v Indian batsmen: As has so often been the case, this is the deciding mini contest. Pakistan have three different kinds of fast bowlers, and two different kinds of spinners, who will need a perfect show from opposition batsmen, if they are to be outdone.Gautam Gambhir and Shahid Afridi Last checked they had to be physically separated from a mid-pitch altercation, in Kanpur. Since then Afridi has become a different man, so mature he seems almost possessed. Will he able to keep his calm when he comes to bowl to Gambhir? Will Gambhir survive for that long?Sachin Tendulkar and Mohammad Aamer Tendulkar knows all about pressure, playing Pakistan, and playing Pakistan in pressure games. Will he try to bully and unsettle a 17-year-old opening the bowling against him?MS Dhoni and Younis Khan Two men seemingly above negative emotion and most likely to stay composed in tense circumstances, and rightly the captains. Are they too cool for an India-Pakistan match?

Stats and trivia

  • Pakistan have beaten India only once in an ICC tournament, in the 2004 Champions Trophy. India have won in the World Cups in 1992, 1996, 1999 and 2003, and also twice in the 2007 World Twenty20.
  • Umar Akmal and Mohammad Aamer have never played India in an international. Neither have Virat Kohli, Amit Mishra and Abhishek Nayar played Pakistan.
  • Tendulkar, with 2381 runs to his name, is 22 short of Inzamam-ul-Haq’s record aggregate in India-Pakistan matches. In current teams, Dravid (1823) and Afridi (1404) are the other leading run-getters.
  • In 14 ODIs against Pakistan, Harbhajan Singh has taken nine wickets at an average of 71.11 and a strike rate of 90.6 balls per wicket.
