Warne taunts Bailey as Stars seal hard-fought win

Shane Warne did not take a wicket but left a mark nonetheless as the Melbourne Stars edged past the Hobart Hurricanes in the final over of the BBL match at the MCG.Adding an edge to a contest already noteworthy as Ricky Ponting’s first domestic match since his international retirement, Warne offered a barbed critique of the Australian Twenty20 captain, George Bailey, who battled to 28 from 26 balls before falling victim to Cameron White.Twice Warne drew edges from Bailey that were not held, leaving the former Australia spin bowler to remark while miked up to the broadcasters: “You would think the Australian Twenty20 captain would smack me out of the park, wouldn’t you? Rather than keep nicking me?”White eventually dismissed Bailey, as the Hurricanes were restricted to 8 for 134. Clint McKay snared three wickets after Tim Paine had tried to hold the innings together following Ponting’s exit in the second over for eight, coincidentally the same score he made in his final Test innings. The Stars’ chase was guided in its early stages by Rob Quiney and Brad Hodge, before cameos by Cameron White and Glenn Maxwell took the hosts close enough to make the final result a formality, despite a noteworthy spell by the limited-overs specialist Ben Laughlin. After the match, Bailey said he had no intention of getting into a war of words with Warne. “Is it disrespectful? Until I actually see it I don’t think I’ll get into a war of words with Warnie,” Bailey said. “I think he’s still the world’s greatest leg-spinner isn’t he, who’s going to have a Test comeback at the age of 43? So he needs a bit of respect.”

Veja abaixo a entrevista exclusiva:

A gente aprende.

Vamos deixar as coisas acontecerem naturalmente.

Can Ganguly inspire Pune with bat?

Match facts

Big picture

After losing a tight contest against Chennai Super Kings on Thursday night, Pune Warriors have flown two-and-a-half hours north to Delhi for their third consecutive away game. Warriors made an impressive start in the tournament with three wins out of four, but are now showing signs of homesickness. They have lost three consecutive away games and slipped to the fourth position after being on top for a while. That they are confronting a red-hot Delhi Daredevils team doesn’t make their task any easier. One of the concerns for Warriors is the form of their captain, Sourav Ganguly, who has scored only 85 runs this season. In Chennai, he faced 14 deliveries from the slow bowlers, his perceived area of strength, to score eight runs. He fell to left-arm spinner Shadab Jakati, managing to get the ball as far as mid-off. Against Daredevils, he won’t have the luxury of facing much spin. Expect Virender Sehwag to unleash his fast bowlers on Ganguly.Daredevils were lucky to get away with a win on Thursday against Deccan Chargers. Kevin Pietersen scored an unbeaten century after being dropped thrice while other big names faltered. Although they are at the top of the table, Sehwag would want himself and his team to put up a strong batting display to dispel doubts.

Players to watch

Ashish Nehra returns to his original home ground and his experience of playing at Kotla and with Sehwag will be important when Warriors devise their plans. Nehra made a good comeback in the previous match, picking up two wickets, after his horror last over in Bangalore.Shahbaz Nadeem is flourishing under Sehwag. He has picked up five wickets in the last two matches while bowling at an economy of four. Nadeem’s form has ensured that Daredevils haven’t missed Roelof van der Merwe, allowing them to play Ross Taylor in his place.

2011 head-to-head

Daredevils played Warriors twice in 2011. They won a high-scoring game by three wickets in Navi Mumbai and the other was washed out.

Stats and trivia

  • Irfan Pathan has bowled six maiden overs in all seasons of IPL, which is second behind Praveen Kumar’s eight
  • Robin Uthappa has 33 dismissals, some way behind Adam Gilchrist who leads the list for most dismissals, 50, in IPL history

    Quotes

“The leadership he has brought to the team is fantastic. He is highly motivated and he wants to contribute. He is a knock away from showing what a world-class player he was.”

“Facing him in the middle during practice, I found him very hard to hit.”

Clarke and Ponting double-tons keep Australia on top

Michael Clarke entered this Test with a whitewash on his mind. After two days, he could hardly have hoped for Australia to be in a stronger position to push for it

The Report by Brydon Coverdale25-Jan-2012
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsMichael Clarke made 210•Getty ImagesMichael Clarke entered this Test with a whitewash on his mind. After two days, he could hardly have hoped for Australia to be in a stronger position to push for it. A day that started with Clarke and Ricky Ponting both bringing up double-centuries and producing the highest Test partnership ever recorded at the Adelaide Oval ended with India two wickets down, and still 543 runs in arrears.Of course, Australia lost three top-order men in the first session of the match and it didn’t hurt them, but after nearly 11 hours of roasting in the field, India’s batsmen must find some energy on the third day to match Australia. At stumps, Sachin Tendulkar was on 12 and Gautam Gambhir had reached 30, with India on 2 for 61, and on the best batting pitch of the tour India needed someone to bring up the team’s first century of the series.Already they had lost Virender Sehwag, who was brilliantly caught by Peter Siddle off his own bowling on 18. Flat-footed and stuck to the crease, Sehwag toe-edged a ball high to the right of Siddle, who thrust his hand up and pulled in one of the best catches of the summer, and nobody was happier than Ed Cowan, the man who dropped a regulation chance at midwicket when Sehwag had 5.India were 2 for 31 when Rahul Dravid (1) was bowled for the sixth time in the series, the victim of a strange occurrence when a Ben Hilfenhaus delivery ricocheted off his elbow and down on to the stumps. The Australians hadn’t found much swing in the hot Adelaide conditions, but the two breakthroughs gave them a strong start after the outstanding work of their own batsmen.By pushing the total to 7 for 604 before Clarke declared the innings closed, Australia gave themselves a chance of a third innings victory in the series, something they haven’t achieved in more than 60 years. India haven’t lost three Tests in a series by an innings in more than 50 years. There’s plenty of cricket to be played before such a scenario becomes a realistic possibility, but the groundwork had been laid. The 386-run partnership between Ponting and Clarke was the fourth-highest of all time for Australia in Test cricket, and all three of the stands above them on the list featured Don Bradman. Clarke became the third player in Test history, after Bradman and Wally Hammond, to score a triple-hundred and a double-century in the same series. For the sixth time in the series Australia batted through an entire session, this time the first of the day, without losing a wicket. The runs flowed freely as India wilted. Clarke and Ponting went to lunch already having compiled the highest partnership ever recorded in an Adelaide Test, beating the previous record of 341 set by South Africa’s Eddie Barlow and Graeme Pollock in 1963-64. By then, Clarke had his double-ton and Ponting was within touching distance of his.Clarke brought up his with a clip for two through midwicket off R Ashwin and celebrated another monstrous innings in the series: after his unbeaten 329 in Sydney, he finished this innings with 557 runs already in 2012. All through 2011, he managed 618. He didn’t add to his score after lunch; on 210, Clarke was bowled by Umesh Yadav, who kept at the batsmen, despite leaking runs.Ponting was on 199 when Clarke departed, and his sixth Test double-century came with a strong front-foot pull to the boundary off Yadav. For a while, it looked like Ponting would go on to register his highest Test score, which stood at 257, but eventually the pull brought him undone when he picked out the deep midwicket, Sachin Tendulkar, who took a well-judged catch jumping to his left.Already India had removed Michael Hussey for 25 with a very sharp piece of work from Gambhir at silly point. Hussey pushed the ball and took off anticipating a single, but Gambhir was good enough to collect the ball cleanly and aware enough to flick it onto the stumps, catching Hussey short. It was an example of how India needed to field; half-chances had to be grabbed. There weren’t always. Ponting was put down on 215 when VVS Laxman at midwicket grassed a chance off the bowling of Ashwin and Ishant Sharma had missed the chance for a return catch when Ponting had 186, the ball struck back at a catchable pace but the bowler not alert enough to get his hands to it.In the end, India picked up a few wickets, including one off a good carrom ball from Ashwin that kissed the edge of Peter Siddle’s bat and was taken by Wriddhiman Saha – his first Test catch. By that stage, India had taken 3 for 13, but Brad Haddin (42 not out) and Ryan Harris (35 not out) refused to make life easy for India and batted through until the declaration came after tea.For India, it was another dreadful day. The film critic Leonard Maltin’s entire review of was: “More of the same, only worse”. It could also have been said of India in the field, particularly in the morning. The bowling was too often insipid, and Sehwag’s captaincy uninspiring and conservative. At times, he did not appear to think taking a wicket was that important. Ashwin was given fields that encouraged him to bowl straight, and both Clarke and Ponting picked off the runs with ease. Ashwin finished with an unwanted record of his own, his 3 for 194 the most expensive bowling analysis ever recorded in an Adelaide Test, but he had his captain to thank – or blame – for much of that.By stumps, it was all down to India’s batsmen. The pitch had plenty of runs in it. India just needed their batsmen to find them.

Collingwood leads Durham to victory

Scorecard Paul Collingwood showed the form which made him a mainstay of the England one-day team for a decade as his innings of 73 helped Durham to an easy Clydesdale Bank 40 group win over Hampshire at the Rose Bowl.Collingwood shared a stand of 142 with Michael Di Venuto, who made 70, as Durham reached an impressive 210 for 5, despite two stoppages for rain which reduced the match to 34 overs aside.Hampshire, chasing a revived target of 216 under the Duckworth-Lewis method, never looked like managing it and could only muster a paltry 134 all out. That gave Durham victory by 81 runs and earned them their fifth win in eight group matches to keep alive their hopes of reaching the semi-finals.Hampshire’s defeat was their fifth in seven matches as they were comprehensively outplayed. The turning point was the stand between Collingwood and Di Venuto in 20 overs with Collingwood hitting five fours and two sixes in his 63-ball innings.Collingwood looked set for a century until he lifted Sean Ervine to mid-off where Liam Dawson clutched the catch. There was late hitting by Gareth Breese, including a six off Chris Wood, to take Durham past the 200 mark.Hampshire needed a swift start and they failed to get it once James Vince had been carelessly run out by a throw from the deep by Liam Plunkett while going for a third run. Vince’s opening partner Jimmy Adams was top scorer with 24 but when he was bowled by Breese’s second ball, Hampshire quickly fell away.Breese and fellow spinners Scott Borthwick and Ian Blackwell found plenty of turn in the pitch to help them and there was little cheer for a small home crowd. The only resistance came from Michael Carberry and Hamza Riazuddin in a stand of 38 for the sixth wicket, but even that took nearly eight overs as Hampshire rapidly fell behind the run requirement.Breese also accounted for Ervine and Benny Howell to finish with figures of three for 19 from seven overs while Borthwick and Blackwell each took two wickets. So too did Mitchell Claydon, who put Hampshire out of their misery with 11 balls to spare when he bowled last man David Griffiths.

Warwickshire make amends with big win

Warwickshire, tipped as relegation candidates by most bookies, left Trent Bridge with a fourth win in six games and as the top of the table side

George Dobell at Trent Bridge20-May-2011
Scorecard
The last time Warwickshire left Trent Bridge – last August – they did so having been bowled out twice in a day and as victims of an innings defeat. It was an embarrassing performance. What a difference a few months makes. This time, Warwickshire left with a fourth win in six games and as the top of the table side. That’s not a bad record for a team who were tipped as relegation candidates by most bookies. So, should Warwickshire now be considered as genuine championship contenders? Wins over Nottinghamshire and Somerset – pre-season favourites for the Championship – bode well, but winning the title may prove a bridge too far. For all their improvement this season – and they do look a stronger squad – the real tests lie ahead. The depth of their squad will be sorely tested in the coming weeks. For a start, Warwickshire are unlikely to see any more of Ian Bell or Jonathan Trott, who now depart on England duty. William Porterfield and Boyd Rankin will play the first two days of next week’s Championship game against Durham before leaving to represent Ireland (substitutes will be allowed).Jim Troughton should be fit to return next week but, with the likes of Neil Carter, Chris Woakes and Ant Botha unlikely to return from injury until the start of the T20 season, the depth of Warwickshire’s squad will be tested. Even in this game, Darren Maddy, 37 on Monday, was forced to bowl the most overs in one innings he has managed in his career. New Zealand offspinner, Jeetan Patel, has been signed as an overseas player for the T20.”That was a very good performance,” Ashley Giles, Warwickshire’s director of cricket said afterwards. “All I told the guys was to remember the feeling we had when we left here last year. Bell played a class innings and we won the game with our first innings bowling: we went at them hard and it shocked them a bit.”We’re still improving. But, if you can go to Taunton and Trent Bridge and win, then you’re doing something right. It doesn’t make much difference who is top of the table at the end of May. But if we’re top at the end of July then I do think we can challenge, as we tend to finish the season strongly.”Nottinghamshire’s chances of retaining the title have clearly taken a heavy blow over the last couple of weeks . In due course, however, they will welcome back the likes of Samit Patel, Alex Hales, Neil Edwards, Darren Pattinson, Luke Fletcher, Andy Carter and Graeme White, and have proved mightily adept at bouncing back from adversity in recent seasons. It would be unwise to write them off just yet.At least Nottinghamshire made Warwickshire fight on the third day. Adam Voges and Paul Franks stretched their overnight stand to 174 – the club’s highest fifth-wicket stand against Warwickshire – with Franks registering his highest first-class score for six years. With a series of pleasing square drives and pulls, Franks looked set for his first century since 2005 until he edged one angled across him. Voges fell to an outstanding slip catch by Varun Chopra, diving full stretch to his right.A merry ninth-wicket stand of 54 between Andre Adams and Stuart Broad diverted the embarrassment of an innings defeat. Adams, racing to his third half-century in three games from just 29 balls, thrashed Naqaash Tahir for 16 in three balls at one stage, with a pulled six landing on the roof of the Fox Road Stand. In truth, however, such partnerships only served to highlight the lack of resistance the previous day and delay the inevitable. Nottinghamshire’s lamentable batting on the second day – and Bell’s excellence in Warwickshire’s first innings – had given away too much ground to make up. Set just 60 to win, Warwickshire cantered to victory in just eight overs. Bell, again timing the ball quite beautifully, underlined the impression that he is in wonderful touch. At one stage he took poor Charlie Shreck for four successive boundaries.Afterwards, Notts’ director of cricket, Mick Newell, declined to highlight his side’s batting frailties. “Our squad has been exposed a little,” he admitted, “but the difference was that we were out-bowled throughout the game. Rankin bowled a quick, aggressive spell; Maddy swung it and we weren’t able to cope.”But Newell and Giles admitted that Broad looked a little short of cricket going into the Test series against Sri Lanka. In the two Championship games he played last year, Broad claimed 19 wickets. This year, he’s managed just five and they’re coming at a cost of 44 apiece. “He’s not played any serious cricket since mid-December, so he’s still looking for his rhythm and form,” Newell said. “The Championship is there to get him back for England, but he’s definitely been a bit under-done and the two games he played have looked like extended nets.”Giles agreed. “He’s bound to be a bit under-done,” he said. “Trott, Swann and Broad are probably not quite there yet, but there’s another week until the Test starts, so they should be fine by then.”It was telling, however, that as spectators left Trent Bridge, Swann returned to the middle for some more bowling.

The Big Picture

Before this series, New Zealand were in total disarray, having endured 14 successive defeats at the international level, and seemingly without a plan. Two Twenty20 matches were all it took to change the vibe in their side. It was made possible by the influx of players who hadn’t been a part of the misadventures in the subcontinent. Adam Milne hustled away with Shane Bond-like pace, Peter McGlashan’s innovative reverse sweeps left Umar Gul – a Twenty20 expert – looking out of place, and Luke Woodcock stunted a rampant chase with a tight spell. Suddenly, all of New Zealand’s experiments have begun to work and they look good for the remainder of the tour.It is unlikely that the hosts will drop their intensity in Christchurch. It has taken a lot of effort to end the losing streak and Ross Taylor’s men will want to savour the taste of victory for as long as possible.Things don’t look so bright for Pakistan though. Despite all the controversies, they were expected to stand up in the Twenty20s – after all it was the format least likely to test their admittedly thin resources. Yet, while they have managed to challenge Australia, England and South Africa in the longer formats, their T20 form has nosedived, and they have now lost six on the trot. The problem seems to stem from their team composition, with a fragile and inexperienced top order failing to put enough runs on the board for their accomplished six-man attack to work with. Given that the AMI Stadium is another rugby-cum-cricket ground that will wrong-foot the best of bowlers, Pakistan may find merit in going the other way and loading up on their batting.

Watch out for…

Ross Taylor has made two steady, but crucial, contributions lower down the order, and in both games, his intent to stay around till the end was obvious – a big improvement from the one-dayers in India when he often fell at key moments. Martin Guptill‘s form at the top has allowed Taylor to play a guiding role in the second half, but expect the captain to step on the gas in Christchurch.Younis Khan‘s return to the Twenty20 side has so far yielded five runs in two innings. He is, however, too good a player to fail three times on the trot. Another player due to come good is Abdul Razzaq whose manic hitting left South Africa dazed in a recent one-dayer in UAE. He showed signs of finding his range in Hamilton, and the crowds in Christchurch can expect him to send a few their way.

Team news

With the series in the bag, New Zealand have decided to give Brendon McCullum more time to rest his back, which means McGlashan will continue to keep wicket. Each member in their 14-member squad has got a chance in the first two matches, and they are likely to fiddle with the line-up some more in the third game. Will Adam Milne get another go?New Zealand (probable): 1 Jesse Ryder, 2 Martin Guptill, 3 Dean Brownlie, 4 Scott Styris, 5 Ross Taylor (capt), 6 James Franklin, 7 Peter McGlashan (wk), 8 Nathan McCullum, 9 Kyle Mills / Adam Milne, 10 Tim Southee, 11 Luke WoodcockPakistan seem to have got their combination wrong – only eight of the 16 members in the squad, including allrounders Shahid Afridi and Abdul Razzaq, are batsmen. Afridi may have to give up the opening slot and add substance to a misfiring middle order. Sohail Tanvir is yet to get a chance and, if picked, his unusual delivery stride could rein New Zealand’s batsmen in.Pakistan (probable): 1 Mohammad Hafeez, 2 Ahmed Shahzad , 3 Shahid Afridi (capt), 4 Younis Khan, 5 Fawad Alam / Asad Shafiq, 6 Umar Akmal, 7 Abdul Razzaq, 8 Umar Gul, 9 Wahab Riaz / Sohail Tanvir 10 Saeed Ajmal, 11 Shoaib Akhtar

“Getting that first win was something special for us … It had been a while and obviously to do it back-to-back was even more special. Hopefully we will continue with confidence from now on.”
