Villa’s Watkins was Smith’s silver lining vs Burnley

After returning to winning ways in the Premier League last weekend, Aston Villa suffered a surprise defeat to Burnley at Turf Moor on Wednesday night.

Dean Smith’s side were in front twice against the Clarets, but a late comeback from the home team saw them walk away with all three points.

Amid all the disappointment, there was one man who the Villa boss and the club’s fans should take comfort in, Ollie Watkins.

The summer signing had gone through a wretched goal drought of around two months in the Premier League, until he broke that duck against Newcastle last time out.

And then on Wednesday, he proved that he seems to have found his goal-scoring touch with a superb near-post run and first-time finish into the back of the net.

It wasn’t just his goal that saw him stand out among a bunch of average performances however, with Watkins’ overall display something for Smith to find a silver lining in.

The £27m-rated ace won nine duels on the night – far above his season average of 7.2 – and really gave the Burnley centre-backs a handful with his physicality and movement off the ball.

The former Brentford ace also showed he’s got the quality to pick out his teammates with two key passes, with only Jack Grealish making more among his Villa teammates.

Writing for The Birmingham Mail, Ashley Preece said in his post-match player ratings: “Villa’s main man up front flicked home his eighth goal from 18 this season. Went close soon after when put through by McGinn’s classy pass.

“Occupied Tarkowski and Mee really well, while it was the former who came through the back of Watkins with what was a real nasty challenge that could have snapped Watkins’ Achilles. Worked hard once more as he completes another 90 minutes. Didn’t have much to go at in the second half as Burnley got their tails up. Another goal will be welcome, though.”

Now that the “top-class” Watkins is back in form, Villa will be confident of maintaining their push for an impressive European place over the coming weeks.

Meanwhile, this Aston Villa ace let Dean Smith down against Burnley…

Quiz: How well can you remember these obscure Liverpool players?

Are you a die-hard Liverpool fan? We bet that you can’t remember some of these Reds players from the Premier League era, ranging from the ridiculous to the sublime.

Of course, things have been much better for Liverpool fans in recent years, thanks to the likes of Brendan Rodgers and Jurgen Klopp helping to transform the club, and surely fans will have put plenty of players from the Roy Hodgson era to the back of their minds.

The Merseyside outfit won last year’s Premier League title, and the Champions League the season before, solidifying their spot as one of the best sides in European football, which is even more impressive when you consider their struggles in the top-flight not so long ago.

Whilst you might want to forget the likes of Jon Flanagan and Jay Spearing, you’ll have to think back to that Anfield era if you are to score 15/15 on this quiz.

You’ll be shown the career path of one ex-Red, but can you name the player?

Man City fans want Aston Villa star Jack Grealish %%page%% %%sep%% %%sitename%%

According to a report by The Athletic journalist David Ornstein, via Sports Illustrated, Man City are huge admirers of Aston Villa star Jack Grealish – with the news prompting many Sky Blues to go wild and urge Txiki Begiristain to ‘get this deal done’.Â

Grealish, who has been a pivotal figure for the Villans over these last two seasons, is currently turning the heads of some big Premier League clubs – which includes City as per this latest update.

The £135,000-per-week England international had attracted interest from the Citizens’ cross-town rivals Man United over the summer, but the playmaker who has drawn comparisons to club legend David Silva is also said to be on City’s watchlist.

As a result, plenty of Sky Blues are keen to see him make a move to the Etihad Stadium – find all of their best verdicts from Twitter down below.

Glasgow Rangers: Fans laud Jon McLaughlin

Glasgow Rangers have had a fantastic start to the new campaign, and a lot of that has been down to their sturdy backline.

The Gers are currently top of the Premiership table, and have not yet conceded in their first six games. This is the first time in 114 years that a side has not shipped a strike in the opening six fixtures, and they could break the record if they do not concede against Dundee United this weekend.

A lot of this success has been down to Jon McLaughlin. The 33-year-old signed for the Gers on a free transfer from Sunderland earlier this summer and was expected to be a back-up option for Allan McGregor. However, the latter’s injury issues have given McLaughlin the chance to shine, and he has now kept five clean sheets in his first five matches.

On Wednesday, the club shared a photo of the £293,000-valued two-time Scotland international – as per Transfermarkt – to celebrate his birthday, and the fans took the opportunity to laud him. They took to Twitter to share their thoughts, and you can see some of the best comments from the social media platform below.

Everton could land their own Pogba in Abdoulaye Doucoure

It is no secret that Everton are desperate for midfield additions this summer and they could land themselves a box-to-box dream in Abdoulaye Doucoure.

What’s the word?

According to the Evening Standard, the Toffees have already failed with a bid for the relegated Watford star with the offer falling short of their £25m valuation.

It’s claimed that the Merseysiders have a long-standing interest in the French midfielder and they are expected to return with a new bid in due course.

Doucoure is even open to a move to Goodison Park so personal terms aren’t expected to be an issue.

Pogba-esque midfielder

Everton do appear to be closing in on Napoli enforcer Allan, but their spending shouldn’t stop there as Doucoure could be the perfect compliment in a 4-3-3 system.

The 27-year-old has been likened to Man Utd superstar Paul Pogba by Owen Hargreaves in the past, claiming that “He’s got goals, he’s got assists he’s so athletic. He’s got that frame of Paul Pogba, he’s got a good touch and he can finish.”

Despite being relegated with the Hornets this season, Doucoure was one of the few bright sparks. He provided four goals and two assists and displayed those box-to-box capabilities in averaging 1.7 tackles, 1.6 shots and 1.1 dribbles per appearance, via WhoScored.

These are characteristics that neither Andre Gomes, Gylfi Sigurdsson or Tom Davies possess in the Toffees squad.

In addition, Jamie Redknapp believes that Doucoure is one of the most “underrated” players in the Premier League, and it’s these sort of players that Ancelotti should be targeting.

With Allan sat at the base of a three-man midfield, the 6-foot Frenchman could be deployed next to Gomes in the same way that Pogba has played alongside Nemanja Matic and Fred at Old Trafford.

Whilst £25m is hardly a scratch above the surface in this day and age. Doucoure would be a steal so Marcel Brands must pull out all the stops to convince Farhad Moshiri to stump up the cash this summer.

Liverpool: Fans debate over the future of Adrian and Loris Karius

Liverpool fans have kicked into debate following a recent Instagram post from forgotten goalkeeper Loris Karius.

The German has uploaded some photos from a recent Melwood training session alongside fellow shot-stoppers Alisson and Adrian. Liverpool fan account @LFCTransferRoom has posted the snaps from Karius’ story and fans are trying to decide whether he has a future at the club or not.

The 27-year-old hasn’t featured for the Reds since his disaster in between the sticks against Real Madrid in the 2018 Champions League final. Since his nightmarish performance, Karius has been an elusive member of the team, spending two seasons on loan with Besiktas following the appointment of £66.8million Alisson (via BBC Sport).

Since his arrival, the Brazilian has helped transform Liverpool’s defence and has contributed to their sixth Champions League title and first ever Premier League trophy. Now, Jurgen Klopp could be faced with a dilemma as he decides who should serve as deputy to the former Roma man.

Loads of Kopites are discussing this situation and many have mixed opinions on whether Karius or Adrian should be next in line to Alisson. One fan thinks the German ‘needs to go’ whilst another has countered that by saying they want Adrian ‘out at all costs’.

The Spaniard was held responsible for Liverpool’s calamitous exits from both the FA Cup and Champions League last season.

Josh Windass: Gerrard plotting Rangers swoop for former star

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard is keen for additions to bolster their chances at a genuine run at the title and this week, he’s been linked with a move for a former Ibrox star.

What’s the word?

According to Football Insider, the Scottish giants have joined the race to clinch Josh Windass from Wigan Athletic this summer with his loan club Sheffield Wednesday and Middlesbrough also in the hunt.

It’s claimed that the Gers are keen to bring him back to Glasgow just two years after he was sold on deadline day for £2.5m.

Meanwhile, leading talisman Alfredo Morelos is edging ever closer to an exit after Lille opened negotiations with Rangers over a record-breaking £17m deal, so a new threat is certainly going to be required in the attack.

Smart call?

Windass’ time in Scotland was pretty decent overall, providing 19 goals and 13 assists in 73 appearances, via Transfermarkt, and ultimately, he was a player that Gerrard didn’t want to let go in the first place.

The 26-year-old revealed in an interview with Open Goal, via the Scotsman, that the Rangers boss was keen to keep hold of him – “He basically said, ‘you’ve got a decision to make. The board have accepted this offer, I don’t want you to go but obviously it’s down to you’.”

Whilst the former Reds midfielder labelled Windass a “good boy” but claimed that he couldn’t guarantee him starts as a number nine, and now it appears that time may have arrived.

This season, the attacking maestro has split time between Wigan and the Owls, where he has netted seven goals from 25 matches whilst averaging 2 shots, 0.9 key passes and 0.5 dribbles per game playing predominantly through the middle, via WhoScored.

Those at Ibrox know Windass all too well and given the uncertain future of Morelos, bringing back the former midfielder could be a wise decision for Ross Wilson to make.
