West Ham interested in Gleison Bremer

Pete O’Rourke has dropped a teasing transfer claim concerning West Ham United’s interest in a deal to bring Gleison Bremer to the London Stadium.

What’s been said?

In recent comments made to Football FanCast, the transfer insider revealed that David Moyes’ side, who had been heavily linked with a move for the Torino centre-back in the buildup to the January transfer window, have indeed been keeping a very close eye on the situation of the 24-year-old ahead of a potential swoop – with the Serie A side reported to be demanding a figure of around €30m (£25m) in order to part with the Brazilian.

Speaking about the interest in Bremer, the journalist told FFC: “He’s a player who has been linked with the Premier League before, West Ham and Liverpool have looked at him.”

Fans will be buzzing

Considering just how much West Ham have struggled defensively following the loss of both Kurt Zouma and Angelo Ogbonna to injury, the news that the Hammers are closely monitoring potential centre-back targets – particularly one with the ability of Bremer – in the January transfer window is sure to have left the London Stadium faithful buzzing.

Indeed, over the seven fixtures in which Moyes has been without his first-choice centre-back pairing, the Irons have lost three games and conceded 11 goals – form which could well prove to be extremely costly for the club’s top-four chances once the sides currently below them in the table have played their games in hand.

As such, it is clear to see that the Hammers are in desperate need of greater depth in the heart of their defence, with Bremer appearing to a make fantastic addition to the 58-year-old’s current options at the London Stadium.

Indeed, over his 20 Serie A appearances so far this season, the £18m-rated defender has helped his side keep five clean sheets, as well as making an average of a colossal 3.5 interceptions – the most of any player in the Italian top-flight – 1.6 tackles, 3.8 clearances, 37.3 passes and winning 6.4 duels per game.

The £18k-per-week centre-back – who is also adept at playing left and right-back – has also chipped in for his side going forwards, scoring two goals and registering one assist, as well as taking an average of 0.8 shots and making 0.3 key passes per fixture.

These returns have seen the Brazilian average a highly impressive SofaScore match rating of 7.17, ranking him as I Granata’s second-best performer in the league.

As such, it would appear that a move for Bremer would be highly advisable one for Moyes to make this winter, as the 6 foot 2 colossus would undoubtedly be an adequate replacement for Ogbonna – and perhaps even a better long-term option than the 33-year-old Italian.

Surrey sign Iftikhar Anjum for early season

Surrey have signed Rao Iftikhar Anjum, the Pakistan paceman, as their overseas player to cover for Piyush Chawla, who will be playing in the IPL during the early part of the season.Iftikhar, 29, has an impressive first-class record, with 388 wickets at 23.87 but has only played one Test for Pakistan, against Sri Lanka almost four years ago. He has featured more regularly in the one-day side, taking 77 wickets from 62 games at an average over 31.He will join up with Surrey at the start of the 2010 season and be available for the first three County Championship matches of the year against Derbyshire at The Oval; away at Hove against Sussex and the festival match against Worcestershire at Whitgift School.Surrey have a new captain, 22-year-old Rory Hamilton-Brown, and are looking to bounce back from a difficult season last year that saw them win just one game in Division Two of the Championship. Chris Adams, the Surrey coach, thinks Iftikhar will bring important experience to the early season.”Signing someone with the experience and proven wicket-taking abilities of Rao Iftikhar will allow us to add a bit of quality to the squad and is very much in line with the signings that we have already made since the end of the 2009 season,” said Adams.”Along with his impressive stats I believe Rao is the type of bowler who will perform well in English conditions and with Pakistan touring later in the year, he has a terrific opportunity to lay down a marker for selection. He can swing the ball well, has a very repeatable action and consistently bowls in the mid to high eighties. We look forward to his arrival.”Surrey have a rich tradition of Pakistani bowlers, with Saqlain Mushtaq and Waqar Younis among the many who have featured at The Oval, and Iftikhar is looking forward to adding him name to that pantheon. “Playing for an English county has long been an ambition of mine and am I very much looking forward to joining Surrey in the coming weeks. Some of the greatest Pakistani bowlers of recent times have played for Surrey and I am honoured to be following in their footsteps.”

Liverpool fans fume at Robertson latest

A number of Liverpool supporters are fuming after Andy Robertson was ruled out of the vital clash with Chelsea next month through suspension.

The Reds enjoyed a memorable win over Leicester City on Wednesday evening, making it into the Carabao Cup semi-finals in the process.

Jurgen Klopp’s men left it late to draw 3-3 with the Foxes at Anfield before Diogo Jota fired home the winning penalty after a tense shootout.

One player who was unavailable for the game was Robertson, who was serving the first of a three-match ban after his red card against Tottenham last weekend.

Liverpool’s Premier League clash with Leeds United on Boxing Day has now been postponed however, which means the Scot will still be unavailable for the trip to Chelsea on January 2nd instead, as confirmed by James Pearce on Twitter.

Michael Keane has been Everton’s unsung hero

Everton’s season has already had several ups and downs under Rafael Benitez, with their fast start to the Premier League campaign unravelling in recent weeks.

The Toffees got 2021/22 off to a blistering start, losing just one of their opening eight top-flight fixtures to spark hope of a genuine push for European qualification.

Summer signings Demarai Gray and Andros Townsend stole the headlines after bagging a combined eight goals in Everton’s first nine games in all competitions, but neither has found the back of the net in the team’s last four outings.

Injuries have played a significant part in the Toffees’ downturn in futures over the last four games, with the absences of Yerry Mina, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Abdoulaye Doucoure contributing to their miserly total of just one point from a possible 12.

However, one player who has been relatively consistent throughout Everton’s rise and fall has been Michael Keane.

The centre-back has had to contend with lining up alongside a number of different partners at the heart of defence this season, including Mina, Mason Holgate and Ben Godfrey. He has been an ever-present in Benitez’s side, though, playing every minute of their topsy-turvy campaign.

Keane’s goal against his former club Burnley helped to seal a 3-1 victory, and although his two assists came in defeats against Watford and Wolves, they illustrate his attacking prowess in the opposition box.

However, it’s in his traditional defensive duties where Keane has really excelled. As per SofaScore, the 28-year-old has won a whopping 59 duels, made an astonishing 46 clearances and 30 interceptions, and completed 17 tackles and 14 blocks.

If Everton are to get back on track and revive their season, then the England international could well be key to their fortunes, and Benitez will be hoping that his unsung hero continues his current run of impressive form.

ICC to meet WADA on code solution

The ICC will soon engage with the World Anti Doping Agency (WADA) to find out whether there can be a meeting ground on the contentious ‘whereabouts clause’ in the agency’s amended code

The ICC will soon engage with the World Anti Doping Agency (WADA) to find out whether there can be a meeting ground on the contentious ‘whereabouts clause’ in the agency’s amended code. The ICC board will study the results of this engagement – and whether they will lead to a satisfactory solution – when it convenes again in three months before arriving at a final decision on implementing the WADA code.Until then, the ICC will continue in-competition and out-of-competition drug testing of all international cricketers without applying the ‘whereabouts’ clause. “We need to find a solution to the practical problem India is having, which is a constitutional issue of the country, which is why we decided to suspend the ‘whereabouts’ clause,” Haroon Lorgat, the ICC CEO, said after the board meeting in Johannesburg on Wednesday. The Indian board has been leading the opposition to the ‘whereabouts clause’ in the amended WADA code, which mandates cricketers, nominated to an international testing pool, to reveal to an ICC-nominated officer before every quarter. details of their location for an hour every day for the next three months to facilitate out-of-competition testing. This whereabouts system was to start from August 1 but was stalled after the 11 Indian cricketers in the pool, including Sachin Tendulkar, refused to reveal the required information citing security and privacy concerns. The BCCI has backed the players on this issue and its stand, in turn, has been validated by India’s Attorney-General, the country’s topmost legal officer, who has conveyed to the Indian board that the clause violates constitutional privacy guarantees.Besides, it has emerged during the ICC meetings in Johannesburg over the last few days that the BCCI’s stand has been backed by other major boards, including Australia, South Africa, England, New Zealand, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh; they have apparently conveyed this in writing to the ICC, too.The Indian board’s proposed solution is that the ‘whereabouts clause’ be scrapped altogether or that testing officials accept a guarantee from national boards that a player who needed to be tested would be made available within 24 hours of a request being made. But if WADA refuses to budge over the issue, the BCCI may eventually push for the ICC to develop and implement its own cricket-specific code.”The doping question is best described as a work in progress,” David Morgan, the ICC president, said. “We will have further meetings with WADA and we hope to have a situation that is acceptable to Wada and all the cricket-playing nations.”

Newcastle must axe Dwight Gayle

Newcastle officially appointed Eddie Howe as the club’s new manager earlier this month and he is now tasked with hauling the side out of the relegation zone.

The Magpies are currently 19th in the Premier League table and are the only team in the entire division yet to win a match, with 20th-placed Norwich even on one win.

A key part of his plan to evade relegation could be the January window when he could need to make major decisions on transfers in and out of St. James’ Park.

Get him gone

One player who find themselves on the chopping block in the January window is outcast centre-forward Dwight Gayle.

Steve Bruce handed him three appearances earlier this season, all of which came as a substitute, and he has been unable to prove that he is a better option than Callum Wilson at the top end of the pitch. He also played 18 times last season and scored one goal for the club in the top-flight.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/check-out-the-latest-newcastle-howe-ter-stegen” title= “Read the latest Newcastle news!”]

In the 2020/21 campaign, he lost a whopping 61% of his duels on the pitch and missed five ‘big chances’. This shows that he did have the service required to build on his solitary goal but his finishing was not up to the desired standard and that could be why his role has been reduced this term.

Toon legend Alan Shearer previously blasted the striker for ‘cheating’ after he was booked for a dive against Manchester City in the Premier League. He said:

“My first reaction was that it was a dive. The referee gets that absolutely spot on.

“Why would he go down there? There is no need. You have the chance to go on and pull the trigger. It is just cheating. I’m still so angry with Dwight Gayle – I really am. Why did he dive? Why didn’t he take the chance to shoot?”

Following PIF’s takeover of the club, a number of transfer links have emerged suggesting Newcastle want to sign a new striker in January. Dusan Vlahovic, Giovanni Simeone, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin are just a few of the names touted with a switch to St. James’ Park in the winter window, which could leave Gayle on very thin ice.

Therefore, Howe must ruthlessly axe the £32k-per-week dud in January and allow him to leave on a permanent deal, replacing him with a fresh addition to the squad. His statistics since the start of last season suggest that he does not have the quality to make a significant impact for Howe’s team in the coming months to help them avoid relegation and that could spell the end of his career on Tyneside.

Shakib and Shahadat fined for excessive appealing

Shakib and Shahadat were fined 10% and 5% respectively of their match fee while Imrul Kayes was reprimanded

Cricinfo staff14-Jul-2009Bangladesh allrounder Shakib Al Hasan and fast bowler Shahadat Hossain have been fined for excessive appealing during the first Test against West Indies in St Vincent which concluded on Monday. Shakib was docked 10% of his match fee while Shahadat was fined 5%. Imrul Kayes, the opening batsman, was let off with a reprimand for the same offence.Andy Pycroft, the ICC match referee, found the players guilty during the final day of the Test as Bangladesh chased their first Test victory away from home.”The effect of prolonging the appeal is just the same as appealing more than once which means pressurising the umpires,” Pycroft said. “I can understand the enthusiasm and excitement on the field as the Bangladesh players were sensing a long-awaited victory and their first in the West Indies but excessive and prolonged appealing on more than one occasion is against the spirit of the game and has no place in the game.”Imrul is relatively new to international cricket as he is playing only his third Test match and I am willing to accept that he didn’t fully appreciate the importance of adhering to the ICC Code of Conduct. But I am sure he has now learnt his lesson and will avoid repeating the same mistake again.”
