Cricket South Africa has placed two 19-year-old bowlers – Prenelan Subrayen and Solo Nqweni – under rehabilitation after independent tests carried out by the Australian Institute of Sport and the Sports Science Institute of South Africa deemed their actions illegal. The two bowlers will not be permitted to take part in first-class cricket till the rehabilitation is complete.”There is a standard protocol we have for dealing with matters of this nature,” Corrie van Zyl, CSA general manager cricket, said. “In the case of Prenelan the situation has been complicated by the fact that he suffered a bad dislocation of his bowling shoulder several years ago and this has contributed to the current problem. He thus needs to undergo both shoulder rehabilitation as well as rehabilitation of his bowling action.Van Zyl said the two players will be under the charge of their respective provincial teams – KwaZulu-Natal for Subrayen and Eastern Province for Nqweni – with assistance from the CSA who will make the facilties and the personnel at the High Performance centre available.”We have every confidence that the rehab process will be successful and that these two talented young cricketers will be able to continue their promising careers in the near future,” he said.Subrayen, a right-arm offspinner, has taken six wickets in three first-class matches this season while right-arm seamer Nqweni has 33 wickets from eight matches.

BCCI to aid in preparing Eden Gardens pitch

The BCCI has asked Ashish Bhowmick, a member of its ground and pitches committee, to assist Eden Gardens curator Prabir Mukherjee in preparing the pitch for the third Test

Amol Karhadkar28-Nov-2012The BCCI has asked Ashish Bhowmick, a member of its ground and pitches committee, to assist Prabir Mukherjee, the groundsman at Eden Gardens, in preparing the pitch for the third Test against England, which begins in Kolkata on December 5. It seems a routine move, part of BCCI’s policy of getting one of the committee members to oversee the preparation of Test pitches, but it has been the focus of speculation, considering MS Dhoni’s continued demands for pitches that turn from day one.Dhoni and the 83-year-old Mukherjee haven’t had the most cordial working relationship either. Despite India’s completion of a 5-0 whitewash of England in 2011-12 with a win in the last ODI in Kolkata, Dhoni called the Eden Gardens pitch an “ugly wicket”. Mukherjee, never one to hold back, responded by saying, “Pitches don’t score runs, batsmen do.” It was also reported that Mukherjee had made disparaging comments about Dhoni’s demands for specific pitches.Board officials, however, sought to dowse speculation. “Prabir Mukherjee is one of the most senior curators in India and Bhowmick, being a member of the BCCI ground and pitches committee from the East Zone, has been asked to assist him,” Biswarup Dey, the treasurer of Cricket Association of Bengal, told ESPNcricinfo.Mukherjee himself was not flustered by Bhowmick’s visit. “It’s not that I’ve been removed or sidelined. We will work together to prepare the wicket,” he told PTI. “I’m more than happy to assist him. He has been asked by the board to help me out. It’s not something that is happening for the first time. I don’t understand what’s the fuss about it.”The BCCI has a policy of asking each of the five members of the ground and pitches committee to oversee the preparation of wickets for international games in their respective zones. While Ramesh Mahamulkar, the Wankhede Stadium curator, prepared the wicket for last week’s Test in Mumbai, Sudhir Naik, the West Zone representative in the committee, supervised the preparations ahead of the match. Similarly, Daljit Singh, the head of the ground and pitches committee, visited Kolkata last week to see if everything was in place. After the Ahmedabad Test against England, which India won by nine wickets on a slow pitch, Dhoni had stated his preference for surfaces that turned and bounced right from the start, so that “the toss was taken out of the equation”. The pitch at Wankhede Stadium met his demands, but England levelled the series with a ten-wicket win.The BCCI, during its annual general meeting in September, had ratified a proposal to expand the ground and pitches committee from five members to 12. The seven additional members were supposed to travel to other centres and help prepare pitches for important games, if required, and also look after the tracks for domestic games that clash with international matches in India.

Read the situation to perfection – De Villiers

AB de Villiers said, after Royal Challengers won with seven balls to spare, he had read the situation to “perfection”

ESPNcricinfo staff07-May-2012Royal Challengers Bangalore needed 39 to win off 18 balls against Deccan Chargers, as AB de Villiers prepared to face Dale Steyn, who had two overs remaining. The first delivery of the 18th over disappeared for a flat six over midwicket, the beginning of 23 game-changing runs in Steyn’s over. De Villiers said, after Royal Challengers won with seven balls to spare, he had read the situation to “perfection”.”I guess we know each other pretty well,” de Villiers said of his battle against Steyn. “I can’t take anything away from Dale, he could have knocked me over with any of those balls, unfortunately for him I read it well, it was just my night.”I thought I saw him whispering to Sanga [Kumar Sangakkara]. I think they took the fine leg back. I was quite lucky, I saw them communicating about where to bowl and I saw Sanga saying short of a length and I was expecting the short delivery upfront. From there on I knew he was going to go full. I just nominated that over well, on another day he might knock me over.”De Villiers began his innings when Royal Challengers needed 76 off 37 balls, and he finished unbeaten on 47 off 17 deliveries. His awareness of the situation was so complete that, after taking 22 off the first five balls of that Steyn over, de Villiers intentionally steered the final delivery to third man to keep strike for the penultimate over. He then hit the first three balls of the 19th over from Anand Rajan to the boundary as well.”I enjoyed the situation tonight, I came in [with] 80 [to get] off 40-odd balls. I knew what was required and played to that kind of game plan and, like I said before, my game plan paid off tonight. On another night it might not, so I took full advantage tonight.”I won’t say I’m a finisher of the game. I’d like to think of myself as a guy who can play anywhere, that’s something I’ve worked on in my whole career. I’d like to be a guy that can adjust to certain situations and that’s something I strive for. I can even get better hopefully as there’s lots of room for improvement.”While de Villiers provided the finish, Royal Challengers had significant contributions from other batsmen as well. Tillakaratne Dilshan scored 71 off 54 balls, while Chris Gayle adapted to playing second fiddle during a 91-run opening stand. “I thought Dilshan played an amazing knock, and even Chris, it was a much-needed foundation we needed,” de Villiers said. “We’ve collapsed a few times in the IPL before, so we needed that foundation to finish it off well at the end, and luckily for me I was in that kind of situation to do so.”And before de Villiers launched his attack on Steyn, Mayank Agarwal had given Royal Challengers valuable propulsion by hitting 18 off the six balls he faced. It was overshadowed by the extraordinary flurry of boundaries that followed, but de Villiers acknowledged the importance of Agarwal’s contribution.”Some of the guys around me played amazing knocks. Mayank Agarwal took a lot of pressure off me with those boundaries he hit,” de Villiers said. “It was either him or me who had to take a lot of risks, and he did it before I did. So he played a very important hand tonight and set it up well for me. I could just go and play the situation at the end.”The win helped Royal Challengers move to fifth spot in the league, overtaking Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI Punjab.

Rain spoils first Rose Bowl one-dayer

ScorecardThe first match between Australia Women and New Zealand Women in the Rose Bowl one-dayers was washed out after only 22 overs were bowled at the SCG.Rain was expected to be a factor in the game as Australia elected to field. The first break occurred in the fifth over when showers stopped play. When play resumed, New Zealand openers Frances Mackay and Lucy Doolan played solidly to put up a half-century stand within the first 10 overs. Mackay was the more aggressive batsman, hitting five fours before falling for 25. Doolan, though, persevered and scored 43 before edging to the keeper just before the rains came.Only three more balls could be bowled after her dismissal before the game was abandoned. The two teams will clash again in the remaining two matches, both to be played at the SCG, on January 27 and 29.

I struggled with vision – Gambhir

Concussed India opener Gautam Gambhir has been advised complete rest for ten days along with medication that should help him recover faster

Concussed India opener Gautam Gambhir is still suffering from the after-effects of the fall he took during The Oval Test, and has been advised complete rest for ten days along with medication that should help him recover faster.Gambhir vomited even during the flight back to India, and has been told by the specialist that he shouldn’t have stayed back for so long. “The doctors said if you are still dizzy and puking, these are clear symptoms of concussion,” Gambhir told ESPNcricinfo.During what was a wretched tour of England for him, a full-blooded sweep from Matt Prior hit him on the left elbow when he was fielding at forward short leg during the first Test. He couldn’t open the second innings of that Test, and batted at No. 4 on the fifth day. There he batted for 70 minutes in India’s unsuccessful attempt to draw the Lord’s Test. The scans didn’t show any break, but the intense pain ruled him out of the second Test. In the final Test of the series, even before he got a chance to bat, he fell awkwardly on his head while trying to catch a skier. That left him concussed. He came out to bat twice despite dizziness and blurry vision, but lower down the order. However, it was clear he was having trouble sighting the ball, and could barely exert himself when running between the wickets. He batted for close to two hours over the two innings. He described his condition thus: “If I looked down, I felt like puking. If I tried to focus on one object, that made me feel dizzy. The vision remained blurry.”Since Gambhir’s comeback to the Test side during the tour of Sri Lanka in 2008, this was the first time he ended a series longer than two matches with an average of less than 40.00. “You can’t even get down to thinking of the performance when you have batted through injury three out of the six innings,” Gambhir said.Gambhir is no stranger to batting through injury or pain, though. Earlier this year, he had already been ruled out of the ODI-leg of the South Africa tour with an injured hand when he batted for four-and-a-half hours to help India save the Cape Town Test and draw the series. He scored a match-winning century in the 2007-08 Ranji Trophy final with a broken hand. At the same venue, the Wankhede Stadium, Gambhir played half his World Cup final innings with back pain. This time, though, the pain and injury barrier proved too significant to ignore without running the risk of letting the team down. “If your vision is blurry, if you can’t focus on one object, if you can’t judge the pace of the ball or its trajectory, not only are you putting yourself at risk, you are also letting your team and your country down,” Gambhir said. “During the [Oval] Test I did what I had to do. There was no choice but to bat, but after that, even when taking throwdowns, I struggled with the vision.” Gambhir stayed with the team for a while, hoping he would recover in time for the limited-overs leg of the tour, but the symptoms remained, eventually ending his tour.If it was the classic accompaniments of concussion that kept him out of the ODIs, the pain in his injured elbow kept Gambhir out of Trent Bridge. “Look, you are not just blocking, which is what was required at Lord’s,” he said. “This was a new Test. It was not just about time, you had to score runs, you had to field, you had to last five days.”The pain in the elbow was massive. It might be easy for an outsider to say that it is not broken and he can play, but the pain was too much. I experienced it during the nets and the throwdowns before the match. And an elbow injury is different from a hand injury, which was the case in Cape Town. You can bat with a swollen hand, but it is very difficult to bat with a painful elbow.”Now, Gambhir said all he could do was rest for ten days and take the prescribed medicines.
