Pundit Carlton Palmer thinks Matt Targett’s Aston Villa career could be over following his loan move to Newcastle United, GiveMeSport report.

The Lowdown: Newcastle debut

Targett, who sealed a loan move to St James’ Park on deadline day, made his first appearance for the Magpies on Tuesday evening.

The left-back helped Newcastle to a 3-1 win over rivals Everton, with Gregg Evans labelling his first performance under Eddie Howe as ‘excellent’.

There is no option to buy in Targett’s loan move, but Palmer doesn’t think the full-back has a future at Villa Park.

The Latest: Palmer’s comments

Palmer, who features for the BBC, was talking to GiveMeSport regarding Targett. He believes the left-back is ‘done’ in the Midlands, with his long-term future now away from Villa Park.

“I think he’s done but I think he’s been unlucky. I think he’s played well whenever I’ve seen him play for Aston Villa, but Steven Gerrard wants to play a different way.

“He wants to play with his full-backs further up the field and Digne is his number one full-back now.

“If Matt goes back there, he is playing second fiddle, so his future is away from Villa Park now.”

The Verdict: Gerrard has a decision to make

Steven Gerrard brought in Lucas Digne from Everton last month and admitted that he would have preferred for Targett to stay.

The Villa boss then revealed that the door is now open for youngster Ben Chrisene to challenge Digne, so with Targett set to return in the summer, Gerrard may have a big decision to make.

Targett is still under contract until 2025 with Villa, and after his decision to leave last month, Villa may well look at a chance to cash in on a permanent exit, especially with the club also keen on Bologna youngster Aaron Hickey.

Fábio Carille fará na noite desta quarta-feira seu primeiro jogo no Pacaembu como técnico do Corinthians. Auxiliar de 2009 até o fim de 2016, ele não comandou o Timão no estádio municipal nem mesmo como interino.

Palco de “muitas histórias do Corinthians”, como o próprio Carille classificou, o Pacaembu deixou de ser usado frequentemente após a construção da Arena em Itaquera, inaugurada em 2014. Nesta quarta, às 21h45, o Timão recebe a Ponte Preta na sua antiga casa porque a atual passa por reforma no gramado.

Prestes a comandar o Corinthians pela primeira vez no Pacaembu, Carille disse que será “um privilégio”. Será a estreia oficial desta temporada de 2018, a segunda do treinador à frente da equipe.

– Para mim, é um privilégio muito grande dirigir o Corinthians no Pacaembu, onde o clube tem muitas histórias, foi a sua casa por anos. É um lugar que o torcedor gosta, que dá todas as condições de trabalho. É um privilégio – afirmou Carille.

Com mais um estádio para o currículo de treinador, Carille comandará o Corinthians pela 84ª vez, contando os jogos como interino. Ele tem 42 vitórias, 26 empates e 15 derrotas. Para 2018, ele quer melhorar esse aproveitamento atual de 61%. Vai começar com o pé direito no Pacaembu?

Um ano e meio longe do Pacaembu

A última vez que o Timão atuou em sua antiga casa foi no dia 8 de agosto de 2016, quando empatou por 1 a 1 com o Cruzeiro. Na ocasião, a Arena Corinthians estava à disposição da organização dos Jogos Olímpicos, que utilizou o estádio em Itaquera para o torneio de futebol.

Ao todo, contando também as vezes como visitante, o Corinthians tem 1690 jogos no Pacaembu. São 966 vitórias, 397 empates e 327 derrotas.

Maratona na antiga casa

Após o jogo contra a Ponte Preta, o Corinthians voltará atuar no Pacaembu no domingo. Isso porque o São Caetano mandará a partida pela segunda rodada do Paulistão no estádio Municial.

Na sequência, o Timão receberá a Ferroviária, dia 24 de janeiro, e São Paulo, dia 28, no Pacaembu. Depois, Corinthians tem dois jogos fora de casa, contra Novorizontino e Santo André, mas volta a ser mandante contra o São Bento, em 14 de fevereiro, quando a Arena já deverá estar disponível.

Adam White has dropped a claim regarding Celtic’s interest in a deal to bring Zinedine Ferhat to Parkhead in the January transfer window.

What’s the talk?

In a recent interview with GIVEMESPORT, the journalist stated his belief that the Nimes winger – who has been heavily linked with a move to Parkhead this winter – would be an extremely impressive signing for Ange Postecoglou to get over the line, with White going as far to state that the 28-year-old would be one of the best players in the Premiership.

Speaking about the Celtic-linked forward, the journalist said: “He’d be a really good option. He can play as a number 10, can also play out wide and as an attacking midfielder, very graceful, creative, and I think he’d improve Celtic’s team and would be one of the better players in the SPFL.”

Bye-bye Johnston

While the likes of Jota, Liel Abada and Kyogo Furuhashi have been in deadly form for Celtic so far this season, with this trio having already scored 35 goals and registered 19 assists between them in the current campaign, Postecoglou’s backup options have been rather less impressive.

One such player is Mikey Johnston, the £10k-per-week 22-year-old who has so far failed to score a single goal over his 18 outings in all competitions this season, with Willie Miller going as far to describe the winger’s performance against Hibernian in the League Cup final as “pathetic.”

And, with the academy graduate being linked with a move to Aberdeen this January, it would seem a very wise move for Postecoglou to allow the winger to depart for Pittodrie, and subsequently make a move to bring Ferhat in as his replacement.

Indeed, over his 33 Ligue 1 appearances for Nimes’ last time out, the £4.05m-rated forward was in astonishing form, scoring six goals, providing ten assists and creating nine big chances for his teammates, as well as an average of taking 1.9 shots and making 1.6 key passes per game.

These returns saw the £13k-per-week Algeria international earn a sensational seasonal SofaScore match rating of 7.07, ranking him by far and away as his side’s best performer in the top flight of French football.

As such, it would indeed appear as if the Nimes winger would be a huge upgrade on many of Postecoglou’s current options out wide – Johnston included – leading us to hold the belief that the 56-year-old must make a move for the player who has 82 career assists to his name before the end of the month.

An injury expert has dropped a ‘worrying’ claim on Jamal Lewis, as he could now face a long spell on the sidelines at Newcastle United.

The Lowdown: Lewis injury

Speaking to the media last week (via The Chronicle), Eddie Howe revealed that the St. James’ Park faithful ‘don’t expect’ Lewis to be back ‘for the foreseeable future’, after admitting himself that his injury ‘looks bad’, and could be a ‘hamstring problem’.

Nonetheless, it is not clear just how long he will be out for, although an injury expert has now given a likely timeframe.

The Latest: Could be ‘eight weeks’

Speaking to Football Insider, injury expert Ben Dinnery, who runs the Premier Injuries site and has a background in both medicine and data analysis, has claimed that it is likely that Lewis has injured his hamstring, and suspects that he could now be out for up to ‘eight weeks’:

“The mechanism of injury was the acceleration phase of a sprint.

“He pulled up fairly sharply, which is a good indication that it is his hamstring.

“The worrying thing is you have varying degrees of strain. If it is a grade one, you would expect him to be back for the festive period.

“But the fact that Eddie Howe has said that he is out for the ‘foreseeable future’ means it’s probably more severe, maybe high-end grade two.

“If that is the case, it could be somewhere between four and eight weeks, so maybe after the winter break.”

The Verdict: Blow

It would certainly be a blow if the North East club are without Lewis for the next few weeks.

The Northern Ireland international has been a revelation under Howe, as he started their last four matches in the Premier League before his injury, where he was barely getting a look-in under Steve Bruce (Transfermarkt).

The former Burnley and AFC Bournemouth manager sung his praises before raising his concerns over his injury, claiming that Lewis has been ‘excellent’ in his athletic work, while former top-flight striker Noel Whelan has recently complemented the ‘real energy’ that he has to get up and down the left flank.

Nonetheless, with fixtures piling up during and after the hectic festive period, Howe will now find it more difficult to win games without Lewis in his team.

Lucas Pratto, enfim, se sente mais tranquilo no São Paulo. Mesmo a dois pontos da meta de 47 estabelecida internamente pelo elenco para não ter nenhum risco de cair para a Série B do Campeonato Brasileiro, o time abriu seis pontos de distância da zona de rebaixamento, com nove a serem disputados. Por isso, o atacante está mais tranquilo para falar de uma possível volta ao futebol argentino, mas no futuro, e, principalmente, de seleção.

O centroavante virou titular enquanto o time nacional era comandado por Edgardo Bauza e balançou as redes. Mas, depois da chegada de Jorge Sampaoli, não foi mais lembrado, o que lhe causa estranheza, já que o atual treinador da Argentina tentou levá-lo do Atlético-MG para o Sevilla, da Espanha, no ano passado.

Mas ele tem contrato até janeiro de 2021 com o São Paulo, que pagou 6,2 milhões de euros (R$ 20,7 milhões na época) ao Atlético-MG por 50% de seus direitos e deve pagar 1,5 milhão de euros (R$ 5,8 milhões) em janeiro por mais 15%. Por isso, voltar ao seu país é apenas um desejo para o futuro, pouco cogitado por ele.

Newcastle United transfer target Ousmane Dembele has informed Xavi of his intention to leave FC Barcelona, according to El Chiringuito (via Sport Witness).

The lowdown

Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo reported last month that Newcastle are in ‘pole position’ to land France international Dembele.

He’s valued at £45million by Transfermarkt, but The Magpies could potentially bring him in on a free transfer because his contract is up at the end of the season.

That’s not to say it’d be a cheap deal. Dembele’s £287,000-per-week wages make him the second-highest earner at Barcelona, behind only Philippe Coutinho (£380,000).

The latest

El Chiringuito’s Jota Jordi revealed that Dembele is lining up his exit from the Camp Nou after a lucrative offer from the Premier League.

“Dembele has told Xavi not to count on him for next year,” he said. “He has an offer from England of a lot of money, with a transfer bonus because he would go free.”

The translation from Sport Witness mentions Newcastle United by name, although it is not clear from Jordi’s comments if they are the ones who have made that offer.

The verdict

This would be an exciting, if risky, signing for Newcastle. Dembele, a former Young Player of the Year in both Ligue 1 and the Bundesliga, is one of the four most expensive players in football’s history.

The great Lionel Messi once dubbed him a ‘phenomenon’, backing him to break into the world’s elite, so there is no questions he is a player with immense natural talent.

But the big concern is his injury record. Since he joined Barcelona in that blockbuster deal in 2017, he’s missed a whopping 100 games through a relentless series of problems.

Ability counts for little without availability, especially if you’re shelling out massive wages for the player in question.

In other news, there’s been a key update on another NUFC target at Barcelona.
