Yusuf, Kulkarni lead West into final

ScorecardA rapid half-century from Yusuf Pathan converted a middling total into a competitive one for West Zone in Visakhapatnam, after which Dhawal Kulkarni and Arpit Vasavada secured a 42-run win against Central Zone, sealing a place in the Deodhar Trophy final. West’s wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel had a terrific game, effecting seven dismissals, equalling the national record.West Zone did not make a good start after winning the toss. Cheteshwar Pujara held the top order together but wickets fell around him and West were struggling at 125 for 4 in the 36th over. Pujara had just fallen for 60 off 96 balls. Yusuf provided the acceleration, smacking 70 off 57 balls with nine fours and a six. Legspinner Piyush Chawla ran through the lower order, dismissing Yusuf as well, to finish with 4 for 54 in 12 overs. West Zone had scored 233 for 9 in their 50 overs.Central Zone’s top order fared worse than West’s did. Their openers fell for 1 and 4, and their No. 4 and 5 batsmen were also dismissed in single digits. Shalabh Shrivastava made 65 at No. 3 and his 63-run stand with Chawla, who made 41, was the only substantial one in the innings. It took Central from 73 for 4 to 136 for 5. Once that partnership was broken, though, the rest folded and Central were dismissed for 191 in 44.3 overs. Kulkarni finished with 4 for 39, while Vasavada took 3 for 19.

Maddinson 61 leads Sixers to victory

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsApart from Australia winning the Ashes, there have been few other projects more worried over in the administrative corridors of the game in the country than the effort to build a more competitive Sydney Thunder. Bottom of the table in each of the first two instalments of the tournament and winless last season, the team based in the western melting pot of Australia’s largest city has much to live up to after an off-season of regeneration. Now boasting Michael Hussey as captain, David Warner and Michael Clarke on their books, and a pair of sturdy English internationals in Chris Woakes and Eoin Morgan in place of the expensive Chris Gayle, the Thunder are a notably improved squad. They duly pushed on to their highest BBL score batting first against the blue blood Sydney Sixers at the Sydney Cricket Ground, but were unable to restrict their more fancied opponents in the chase.Warner and Usman Khawaja, who tweaked a hamstring while batting and is a doubt for the Thunder’s second game on December 27, gave their team an ideal start but the problems of previous seasons – lack of even contributions – returned to haunt the middle order. By contrast, the Sixers had a decent start from Nic Maddinson, before handy innings down the order took them home in front of 18,180 spectators.Nic Maddinson struck six fours and four sixes during his 40-ball 61•Getty Images

The pitch at the SCG was mottled and arguably a poor surface for Twenty20 combat, offering some spiteful bounce and sideways movement for seamers in addition to variable pace. Maddinson was struck more than once by Dirk Nannes but hammered enough clean blows in between to pass 50, with a languidly pulled six into the Members Stand the best hit of the lot.His dismissal gave the Thunder some chance, but the captain Steve Smith, Moises Henriques and the England allrounder Ravi Bopara held their nerve. The Thunder’s major shortfall in defending their total was the fact that while their pacemen are all of a high standard, the spin duo of Carl Sandri and Blake Dean lack the incisiveness. That pair had sat nervously on the boundary’s edge as Khawaja and Warner took little time getting into stride. Winded by one short ball from Brett Lee in the opening over, Khawaja soon improved his timing, while Warner maintained the momentum of impressive Ashes form with a series of percussive blows. They were helped by some indifferent fielding from the Sixers. Khawaja was turfed low by Daniel Smith behind the stumps, while Steve O’Keefe missed a one-handed return catch offered by Warner. The runs flowed rapidly, and at 0 for 116 in the 11th over, a tally beyond 200 looked probable. But the unlikely intervention of Mark Cosgrove, who tempted Warner to sky a catch, swung the momentum. In dramatic fashion , after Khawaja’s 66 and Warner’s 50, no other Thunder batsman reached double figures as the innings petered out. None of Hussey, Morgan or Woakes could make an impact, and the total only passed 160 in the end through a bold blow by Sandri, who swatted his first ball from Lee for six down the ground. That strike took the visitors up to a total that looked reasonable enough in the prevailing conditions, but the clean striking of Maddinson, the composure of Henriques and Bopara, and a Thunder bowling attack little short of the required depth, made it another night of disappointment for the losing team.

Sutherland to stay even if Ashes lost 5-0

James Sutherland’s 12-year-old tenure as chief executive of Cricket Australia is so secure that not even a 5-0 defeat to England at home in the forthcoming Ashes series would be enough to remove him, the CA chairman, Wally Edwards, has said.Following an AGM in Melbourne, CA laid out a strong financial position, to the point that the game’s governors have set up a future fund that will peak at A$70 million in reserves. Edwards launched a fierce defence of his chief executive, with Sutherland himself rebuking Ricky Ponting’s contention that the organisation lacked vision and ignored requests for greater forward thinking when the national team was strong.Edwards confirmed that Sutherland was under contract until June 2015 following that year’s World Cup, and that nothing would stop him from seeing out that term. “We want to see continued improvement,” Edwards said. “If we lost the series 5-0, James Sutherland will still be the CEO of Australian cricket, and James is contracted through to June 2015 after the World Cup, and there will not be any changes in that situation, regardless of the way we perform on the field this summer.”I don’t know where the stories are coming from but they’re not real in our world. I can reaffirm there is absolutely no discontent whatsoever with James’ performance, and I’m bewildered where the story’s come from, but you would understand that better than me. We’re very confident where we’re going. We have a solid plan and it’s not just a plan for a quick fix, it’s a plan for continued high performance of our men’s and women’s sides.”Sutherland defended his own position and that of the team performance manager Pat Howard, following comments by former coach Mickey Arthur that both men, alongside the captain Michael Clarke, would be under enormous pressure for their jobs should the Ashes be lost. But he saved his most pointed responses for Ponting’s contention that CA had not responded to the requests of coaches and players to buttress the national team against coming storms when Australia was still the world’s undisputed No.1.”Over six years up to that time [2012] we grew from $39 million dollars to $75 million of investment in high performance and elite teams, which includes player payments,” Sutherland said. “Take player payments out of that, $7 million grew to $19 million in and around the team. That is not the sign of an organisation that is failing to invest in high performance activities.”Ricky Ponting had no budget responsibility, and he didn’t have any sort of view as to what the budget was. He wouldn’t know. There might be things along the way he is looking for. In that same period the number of staff with the Australian team doubled. I’m not getting into a tit for tat conversation about Ricky Ponting. We will have our own private conversations as we have, and we understand each other very well. We are on very good terms.”When questioned on what goals were set for the improvement of the national team over the coming summer, Sutherland said that while he was naturally intent on ensuring that the Ashes be regained, there was a bigger picture to be aware of. Edwards and Sutherland have overseen major governance reform in Australian cricket, while also attempting to ensure the game is as well placed as possible to fight for talent and support in what the chief executive regards as the world’s most competitive sporting landscape.”It’s not just about the team,” Sutherland said. “What I am responsible for and what the management of Australian cricket is responsible for, which includes the state and territory cricket associations, is the strategy for Australian cricket, and delivering on all of those things. We’ve got an increasingly complex business in a highly competitive market. There’s no other country in the world that has as much competitiveness for sport entertainment and elite talent as what there is in Australia.”Therefore our strategy and the delivery of that strategy is incredibly important. We can only achieve the potential for our sport if we have all the moving parts going in the same direction. That’s why the unification process for Australian cricket that we are going through right now is so important.”We are very confident that with Wally as chairman and him working closely with state boards, and me working closely with the management teams of state associations, that we’re going in the right direction. And I include cricket performance as well. This is not just business speak. This is talking about state associations taking responsibility for the development of cricket, [so] that [they] are ready to play cricket for Australia and win cricket matches.”

Will Malinga's absence impact Mumbai?

Mumbai Indians will rely on their batsmen to fire with their seam attack weakened by Lasith Malinga’s absence

Kanishkaa Balachandran19-Sep-2013Overview
Mumbai Indians had a Champions League title to their credit even before winning an IPL trophy. A team regularly tagged as pre-tournament favourites finally lived up to their billing when they beat the IPL’s most successful team, Chennai Super Kings, in the final of IPL 2013. Mumbai were part of the Champions League last season as well, but struggled in South African conditions, failing to win any of their three completed games. Now with the tournament back in India, they will be more of a threat. It will be an emotional moment, not just for Mumbai, but for cricket fans as Sachin Tendulkar signs off from mainstream limited-overs cricket upon the conclusion of this tournament. He had an ordinary IPL by his standards but at least got to be part of a winning IPL side. Getting there, Mumbai had to make some hard decisions, including dropping the underperforming Ricky Ponting as captain and batsman. Rohit Sharma not only led the side well, he also finished as the leading run-scorer for his side.Mumbai suffered a blow in the lead up to this edition with the withdrawal of Lasith Malinga, one of their most prized overseas players, due to personal commitments. Their strength remains in their batting, with Dinesh Karthik and Ambati Rayudu – part of India’s recent ODI squad in Zimbabwe – their key home players apart from Rohit. In this edition, Mumbai are in Group A with Rajasthan Royals, Perth Scorchers, Lions and Otago.Key players
In Malinga’s absence, the credence on Harbhajan Singh will increase. Harbhajan looked a different bowler in IPL 2013, flighting the ball a lot more, bowling quick topspinners. He finished with 24 wickets at a miserly economy of 6.51. Harbhajan, however, was not given a lifeline by the selectors, at least in the India A one-day squad featuring in the ongoing series against West Indies A. The Champions League is another chance for him to make a comeback, with the home season fast approaching.Weakness
Malinga has carried the seam attack for long, but Mumbai will have to cope without him in this edition. Mitchell Johnson bowled with fire and will be expected to fill Malinga’s role. Besides Johnson, they don’t have too many seam options. Abu Nechim and Rishi Dhawan are the only Indian seamers, while Nathan Coulter-Nile has limited international experience. The question, though, is whether they can afford to play two international seamers in the line-up, with the cap on foreign players at four.Surprise package
The hyped Tendulkar-Ponting combine flopped at the top, causing the management to leave out Ponting. Dwayne Smith replaced him as opener and the West Indian made the position his own. In 13 games he scored 418 runs. Often guilty of throwing his wicket away after getting a start, Smith batted more responsibly and with greater consistency, scoring four fifties. His 62 in the second qualifier helped Mumbai progress to the final.

O Botafogo ainda aguarda a proposta formal.

Zimbabwe complete massive win

Zimbabwe lifted themselves above Bangladesh’s international stature with the whopping 335-run win in the first Test in Harare

The Report by Mohammad Isam20-Apr-2013
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsBrendan Taylor scored his second century of the match•Associated PressZimbabwe lifted themselves above Bangladesh’s international stature with the whopping 335-run win in the first Test in Harare. Brendan Taylor’s twin centuries and skillful swing and seam bowling finished off the game inside four days, as Zimbabwe took a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. The game ended when Kyle Jarvis took a magnificent catch at deep fine-leg to give Graeme Cremer his fourth wicket, that of Robiul Islam, to bowl out Bangladesh for just 147. Earlier in the day, Zimbabwe declared their second innings on 227 for 7, setting Bangladesh an improbable 483.Bangladesh, a long-time rival at the bottom of the world rankings, brings out the best in Zimbabwe, who came into this series on the back of five consecutive Test defeats. This time, Zimbabwe were far ahead mentally as they used their familiarity with the conditions in Harare to mighty effect. It was a crushing loss for the visitors who are at the backend of a much better season, and it will set them back a few steps as they head into the second Test in a must-win situation.Taylor made 171 and 102 not out in a Test match that, till date, has been his most prolific. He was almost a one-man show, especially in the second innings when one wrong shot from him could have given Bangladesh a sniff. Zimbabwe were 84 for 6 in the second innings, but Taylor took Graeme Cremer under his wing as they staved off a rampant Robiul Islam. He broke several records on the way too. He became the first Zimbabwe captain to have scored two hundreds in a Test and also has the highest score for a Zimbabwe captain. He also beat his previous best of 117 in the first innings, and added the highest score against Bangladesh under his belt. With the ball, Zimbabwe were led by the impressive Jarvis. It was a complete domination of the Bangladesh batsmen as he, Shingirai Masakadza and Keegan Meth kept the ball up and used excellent lines. Jarvis finished with figures of 7 for 115 in the match, doing justice to the hype around him. Masakadza took five wickets in the game while Meth kept one end quiet as the other two went about knocking the batsmen over.Cremer too played a useful hand with the bat, scoring 42 and 43. These were vital runs, as he added two big seventh-wicket partnerships with Taylor that frustrated Bangladesh greatly. He ended the game with four cheap wickets, capping off a fine all-round display. If Bangladesh’s first-innings collapse of 9 for 32 was bad enough, their second-innings showing was equally poor. Shahriar Nafees’ extra keenness at the start of Test innings cost him yet again. After scoring two consecutive boundaries, he created a big gap between bat and pad, played all over a full delivery from Jarvis and lost his off stump. After the lunch break, Ashraful hardly got out of his self-induced shell as he looked to drag the game for as long as possible. Mahmudullah at the other end went after the bowling, and soon enough, perished. Whether he had seen substitute Sean Williams stationed at deep square-leg cannot be a valid point for a batsman at this level of cricket, but his innocuous pull shot said much about his muddled mindset. His dismissal again triggered a collapse as Shakib Al Hasan and captain Mushfiqur Rahim fell soon after. Similar to the first innings, Shakib was caught at gully but this time he wasn’t fending. He has a unique way of playing a late cut which he guides past gully and point, but this time he couldn’t keep the Jarvis delivery down.Luck too wasn’t on Bangladesh’s side as two of the dismissals showed. Jahurul Islam was given out caught behind when the ball had appeared to flick his shirt on the way to the wicketkeeper Richmond Mutumbami. A prolonged appeal from the slips created enough pressure on the umpire Tony Hill.Mushfiqur was brilliantly caught at second slip by Taylor, who jumped to his right and grabbed it one-handed. The Bangladesh captain’s dismal Test was in far contrast to his opposite number.Mohammad Ashraful’s dim-witted run-out close to the tea break rounded off a forgettable session for the visitors. Cremer spun one past Ashraful’s bat and wicketkeeper Mutumbami’s gloves, but Taylor saved the ball at slip. Ashraful, thinking it had beaten Taylor, went off for a run and was duly run out amid loud laughter among the Zimbabweans, as he wasted another opportunity and the home side basked in the glory of a great performance.

Misbah rubbishes reports of rift with Hafeez

Misbah-ul-Haq, the Pakistan captain, has denied reports of a rift with Twenty20 leader Mohammad Hafeez ahead of the five-match ODI series against South Africa. The Pakistan media alleged the pair had been involved in a verbal altercation during the warm-up match against the South African Invitation XI in Kimberley on Wednesday. Hafeez was not part of the playing XI in that game, which the tourists won in the last over, by just one wicket. Some publications claimed the main event was not the victory but a disagreement between the two players. The main issue of contention was apparently Hafeez’s position in the batting order. According to reports, Misbah wants Hafeez to bat at No. 3 while Hafeez wants to open, and Misbah is in favour of playing two allrounders – Shahid Afridi and Shoaib Malik – while Hafeez wants more bowlers.Misbah refuted all those claims. He called it “irresponsible and baseless” reporting, and said the team had laughed at the suggestions of infighting. “People who are putting out those stories should be ashamed of that. The team is like a family, we are playing here like a family, we all support each other and there is nothing wrong.”He also said such allegations tend to emerge “whenever we lose a few games”, as was the case in the Test series, and performances like their Twenty20 one would quell the chorus. “That [the T20 win] was really good for us and brought back a lot of confidence for the batsmen,” Misbah said.Pakistan’s management also moved swiftly to dismiss the assertions. Team manager Naved Cheema said the reports were part of a conspiracy to destabilise the team: “It has become a common practice to launch a propaganda campaign against the team by targeting players ahead of an important event, but the team management is fully aware of the situation and is determined to defy all such moves in the larger interest of the Pakistan team and cricket. Our aim is to take Pakistan cricket higher with our team playing quality cricket and producing positive results.”The PCB issued a statement rubbishing the claims as well yesterday. The statement said: “[In view of] reports in a few media outlets that there was supposedly a disagreement amongst the think tank of Team Pakistan, in particular between skipper Misbah-ul-Haq and Mohammad Hafeez, with regards to the selection of the ODI XI, the PCB high-ups launched a thorough inquiry. The team management was contacted in South Africa and it was discovered that no such disagreement whatsoever existed amongst the think tank, or between Misbah and Hafeez. It is therefore stated for record that all such isolated reports in the media are baseless … and an attempt to demoralise the team.”Meanwhile, Misbah was upbeat about his team’s chances in the one-day series and said they would rely on their spinners to keep South Africa tied down. “Our spinners are world-class and can really bowl well in any sort of conditions, especially in ODI games where we have to restrict the opposition by bowling dot balls,” he said. “In the one-day format, we can always put up a good show. South Africa are a good side, but they will find it a little difficult in this format.”

National T20 Cup: Sensational Iftikhar Ahmed leads Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to second successive title

Captain returns 3 for 5 and then smashes 19-ball 45* to shut out Central Punjab in title clash

Danyal Rasool13-Oct-2021Khyber Pakhtunkhwa defended their National T20 title, storming past Central Punjab to win by seven wickets on Wednesday evening in Lahore. A stunning all-round performance by Iftikhar Ahmed, who took three wickets for five runs and smashed an unbeaten 45 off 19 balls, was at the heart of the show from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, who dominated the game from start to finish. After putting Central Punjab in to bat, Imran Khan struck off the second ball, getting Muhammad Akhlaq to nick off to the keeper. It was followed by the best spell Central Punjab enjoyed in the game – Kamran Akmal and Ahmed Shehzad were together at the crease, leading the revival with an 85-run partnership off 61 balls. Both players, once they got going, began to look dangerous, particularly when Asif Afridi, so impressive otherwise, was smashed for 16 in his first over. But once Khalid Usman had Akmal stumped and Iftikhar got rid of Shehzad within seven balls of each other, Central Punjab went to pieces. Iftikhar and Muhammad Imran struck three times each, while Qasim Akram and Faheem Ashraf were the only other batters who managed double figures. The last nine wickets fell for 63 runs as Central Punjab failed to bat out their 20 overs, setting Khyber Pakhtunkhwa 149 for victory.A total as low as that hadn’t been defended all tournament, and in truth, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were never in danger of letting that happen on the night. They didn’t start especially explosively, but even while the asking rate climbed, they had wickets in hand, and appeared in control of the chase. Sahibzada Farhan and Kamran Ghulam were astute in their pacing of the innings, as they added 47 for the second wicket, aware only a flurry of wickets could imperil their charge to the title. Even when both did fall, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa needed a further 69 in just over seven overs; with a man in Iftikhar’s form coming in to bat next, it didn’t feel all that much.Any doubts were put to rest in the 15th over, where a wayward Muhammad Faizan went for 20 runs, and from that point on, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa required less than a run a ball.Iftikhar, though, wasn’t content to stroll through to victory, and blasted his team past the finishing line in just another couple of overs. Fittingly, it was a couple of boundaries from him that sealed the win. He would go on to be named the match and tournament awards, by far the best player in a team that was head and shoulders above the rest.

ESPNcricinfo staff26-Jun-2012Paul Adams, the former South Africa spinner, has been unveiled as the new coach of the Cape Cobras. Adams takes over after Richard Pybus – who has since been handed the Bangladesh job – stepped down at the end of last season, citing differences with administration in the franchise as the reason for his stepping down.Adams has previously held coaching roles with the Western Province amateur side and the South Africa A side, and was the assistant coach of the now defunct seventh domestic franchise, Impi.Cobras chief executive Andrew Odendaal said there are “high expectations” of Adams to lead the traditionally strong franchise.
