Duckworth/Lewis and bad batting make for poor bedfellows

A culmination of poor batting, poor wicket and the dreaded Duckworth/Lewis method saw Hampshire Hawks fall to the fourth successive defeat in the Norwick Union League at Derby on Saturday. The Derby saga started on Friday when the team were told not to travel up to the Midland county until word was received as to the fitness of the ground. Hampshire coach Jimmy Cook and local umpire Budd Hill held the inspection and then telephoned the ECB, who after deliberations suggested that Hampshire travelled. So on Saturday, the teams, umpires, spectators all arrived for a prompt start!!!Although conditions following heavy thunderstorms were not ideal, Hampshire Hawks chose to bat but they struggled off the seaming ball on the damp green wicket, and lost 7 wickets for 50 before the first stoppage for rain. Apart from a run out when Crawley drifted down the wicket at the non-strikers end, the wickets belonged to the seamers, Dominic Cork was unplayable and he conceded just 9 runs from his 8 overs, 6 of them wides.Five overs per side were lost when another shower sent the players scurrying for cover. Nic Pothas saved a complete disaster with a polished half century, first sharing a 51 run stand with Shaun Udal and then a more unlikely 42 undefeated atand with Alan Mullally.Much scratching of heads around the ground as the Duckworth/Lewis came into effect, asking Derbyshire Scorpions to score 137 in 40 overs to win, some 6 runs less than Hampshire had scored. Even a phone call to Mr.Duckworth confirmed the scorers calculations as correct. The Scorpions innings owed much to their overseas star Michael diVenuto, as wickets fell at steady intervals. Hampshire used five seamers, with Shaun Udal resigned to a fielding roll, and at 100 for 7 the home side looked in trouble, Skipper Will Kendall bowled out his top bowlers early in an attempt to find a fginal breakthrough, but the Scorpions scraped home with 5 balls remaining, and left the Hawks cursing the D/L method.

Pundit warns Everton to stay away from Real Madrid’s Marcelo

Marcelo should be a no for Everton, that is according to former Premier League midfielder Carlton Palmer.

The Real Madrid star is currently being linked with a move to Goodison Park, with the Mirror claiming the Toffees and Palmer’s old side Leeds United are both in the frame to sign him.

The 58-cap Brazilian only played 16 league fixtures last season, firmly behind Ferland Mendy in the left-back pecking order at the Santiago Bernabeu. He is also now 33 years of age, so he is not exactly getting any younger.

Ultimately, for Palmer, Real Madrid letting him go is a huge red flag. Speaking about the reports linking Marcelo to Everton, the ex-Leeds player told TT:

“For me, I think Marcelo at 33, no. Why are Real Madrid letting him go? You’ve always got to question that. Why are Real Madrid letting him go? Why have Real Madrid let [Sergio] Ramos go? You’ve always got to ask yourself a question.”

At Everton, Marcelo could easily find himself behind another France international in Lucas Digne.

Going forward, the 27-year-old has really come up with the goods for the Toffees. He assisted seven goals last season in the Premier League and another seven the campaign prior, truly impressive numbers for a full-back.

SCC and Colts sqeeze through to Premier League final

Colts Cricket Club and the Sinhalese Sports Club squeezed into the Premier League final after dramatic batting collapses that left both sides close to defeat on the final day

CricInfo24-Mar-2002Colts Cricket Club and the Sinhalese Sports Club squeezed into the Premier League final after dramatic batting collapses that left both sides close to defeat on the final day.Colts CC were the first to book their place in next weeks final, which will be played at SCC Grounds. Starting the day on 131 for two chasing a 217 run target they had looked clear favourites. But NCC, led by their fast bowlers Ravindu Pushpakumara and Ishara Amarasinghe, who picked up three wickets apiece, fought back on a stifling Sunday morning at P.Saravanamuttu Stadium.Sajith Fernando only added one run to his overnight score of 38 before he feathered a catch to Kumar Sangakkara behind the stumps and Puspakumara then quickly dismissed Jevantha Kulatunga for a six-ball duck (134 for four).Enter Chaminda Vaas, whose growing confidence with the bat is now producing consistent runs for Sri Lanka in Test cricket. This time he saved Colts with an invaluable unbeaten 31 from 53 balls as the wickets continued to tumble.Romesh Kaluwitharana was eventually caught by Naweed Nawaz off the experienced Ruwan Kalpage, Sri Lanka’s current fielding coach, and Eric Upashantha only lasted two balls (152 for six).Amerasinghe came back to grab two more wickets and Colts were tottering on 195 for eight still needing 22 to win. But Vaas’s nerve held, as did Kaushalya Weereratne’s who scored 14 priceless runs.At Maitland Place, SSC looked to have established a position of dominance, but Indika de Saram, back on the sidelines after the promotion of Tillakaratne Dilshan, scored 108 from 174 balls, hitting ten fours. He added 96 runs with Ranga Dias after the early loss of Malintha Gajanayake in the morning to leave SSC a small but difficult 109 run target on a pitch that had now deteriorated appreciablySSC were soon in trouble. Avishka Gunawardene completed a miserable week in which he has lost his place in the one-day squad with a second ball duck. When Mahela Jayawardene was stumped for a brisk 19, the innings went into rapid decline and Tamil Union held the initiative with SSC slipping to 73 for 7.But Thilan Samaraweera, who had picked up five wickets in the Tamil Union innings, guided SSC home with nerveless 46 not out from 66 balls.

Southampton linked with Nuno Tavares

Southampton have recently been linked with a move for Benfica full-back Nuno Tavares, and he could be a superb addition to Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side ahead of next season.

According to Portuguese news outlet O Jogo (via Sport Witness), the Saints, Brighton and Newcastle are all interested in signing the 21-year-old this summer but will face competition from Serie A giants Napoli.

The report suggests that he could be available for €15m (£12.9m) this summer and, although this is slightly over the budget Hasenhuttl has set ahead of the transfer window, it would be worthwhile for a player of Tavares’ potential.

The Portuguese defender has made 41 appearances for Benfica in his senior career thus far, contributing one goal and seven assists in that time, whilst he also has some experience playing in the Europa League.

This season saw Tavares make just seven starts in the Portuguese top flight with Benfica but his performances last season, when he made 11 appearances, contributing one goal and four assists, demonstrates his obvious ability.

Back in January, football agent Cesar Boaventura claimed that Manchester United were interested in the young defender and was full of praise for him, saying: “He’s a fast player, one of the fastest players in the whole Portuguese league.

“He’s young. Maybe he’s not a player ready for a big one. But he could be in the future. Within a couple of years he can become one of the best in Europe.”

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-southampton-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Southampton transfer rumours and news!”]

Southampton are in desperate need of a left-back ahead of next season following the news that Ryan Bertrand would leave St Mary’s on the expiry of his contract, and Tavares could prove to be his long-term replacement.

Hasenhuttl would surely appreciate a versatile player who can play as both a left-back and a right-back, and Tavares has featured on the right on six occasions in his career thus far. He could yet prove to be a back-up to Kyle Walker-Peters, which immediately marks him out as someone who the Austrian would appreciate having in his side next season, given his desire for players to adapt to a number of roles.

Therefore, Martin Semmens should definitely try and bring Tavares to St Mary’s this summer, as he could prove to be a superb addition to the Southampton squad for the future.

Leeds suffer Conor Gallagher blow

Leeds United have reportedly shown interest in signing Chelsea youngster Conor Gallagher on loan, but he looks set to stay at Stamford Bridge.

The Lowdown: Several loans for Gallagher

The 21-year-old has found himself out on loan a number of times in his fledgling career in order to enjoy guaranteed playing time.

Gallagher has spent this season at West Brom, making 25 starts in the Premier League and chipping in with two goals and two assists apiece for the Baggies, whose relegation was confirmed on Sunday.

With his spell at The Hawthorns now coming to an end, the youngster will be looking to see what the next chapter in his career has in store.

The Latest: Leeds show Gallagher interest

According to journalist Alan Nixon on Twitter, Leeds are among several clubs who have expressed an interest in taking Gallagher on loan next season, with Crystal Palace and Newcastle United also mentioned as potential suitors.

However, it is stated that the midfielder now wants to fight for his place at Chelsea, aiming to catch the eye of manager Thomas Tuchel.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Look for more experience alternatives

Gallagher is clearly a talented young player, being hailed by his former boss Slaven Bilic as an “energetic” midfielder who “has a lot of everything” [football.london].

However, Leeds may be better looking for a slightly older midfielder, bringing them in permanently in order to settle.

Someone like 26-year-old reported transfer target Rodrigo de Paul would be perfect, in that respect, with the Udinese man scoring nine goals and registering eight assists in Serie A this season, shining in one of Europe’s biggest leagues.

Leeds need to be in a situation where they are signing players who are highly likely to instantly make the squad stronger – while Gallagher has definite potential, that wouldn’t be a given considering his tender age.

In other news, a pundit has been left baffled by one Leeds player’s lack of football this season. Find out who it is here.
