Tottenham fans furious with Mauricio Pochettino over Lucas Moura snub

A man who will forever go down in Tottenham’s history books for his dramatic Champions League hat-trick against Ajax last season, Lucas Moura hasn’t exactly enjoyed the brightest of starts to the current campaign.

The Brazil international has featured six times in the Premier League this season, but has played just 240 minutes in the competition. Against Brighton on Saturday afternoon, the 27-year-old was once again restricted to a place on the Spurs bench, and he only came on with 17 minutes to go.

In the short time he was on the pitch, the speedster registered two shots on target, and completed two of his attempted dribbles.

After seeing the Brazilian’s cameo appearance, Spurs fans flooded to Twitter to voice their fury at the situation surrounding the forward.

Many Lilywhites supporters revealed they couldn’t believe why the 27-year-old simply hasn’t been given a chance to shine by Mauricio Pochettino this season.

Some fans of the north London side criticised the Spurs boss for his treatment of the former PSG man, and one fan in particular labelled it as a “disgrace”.

Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish will continue to underperform unless tactics are changed

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Aston Villa’s game against Arsenal very much mirrored their season so far in the Premier League.

The summer was filled with so much promise and hope as manager Dean Smith splashed the cash on 12 players including the popular return of Tyrone Mings.

Villa took an early lead against the Gunners thanks to John McGinn, in the same way that they did against Tottenham on the opening weekend.

Despite being a man down, Arsenal found a way back to run out 3-2 winners, condemning the west Midlands club to a relegation spot for the first time this season – they have won just one of their six matches so far.

Up until this point, their defence was a positive having kept two clean sheets but individual errors effectively allowed Arsenal to regain control while in attack, they had struggled for goals scoring just four before now.

Though, one of their significant problems could actually lie in the link between the two aforementioned areas of the pitch.

On the Chalkboard

Jack Grealish is the star man in B6. Boyhood fan. Academy graduate. Club captain.

Last season he was an influential figure on their way to playoff glory – in 34 appearances, the 24-year-old scored six goals from midfield and also laid on seven assists.

This season he has already racked up two assists and that’s in a team that’s struggling too. He could offer so much more that would not only benefit himself and the manager but the whole team too.

He needs to be played further up the field to allow his creative playmaking exploits to bear fruit – he averaged 2.3 key passes last term, but against Arsenal, he could only muster up 40% of his passes in the final third of the pitch.

The heat map below shows the main areas the midfielder frequently controlled during Sunday’s match, and it shows just how underused the entire pitch is and the areas he went missing.

His presence should be more frequent in an attacking role if Smith wants to get the best out of him.

It’s something that may also stop him from losing the ball regularly in important positions.

With the way the 48-year-old sets up this team, he can surely afford to push Grealish further forward considering Marvelous Nakamba rarely strays away from defensive midfield. Furthermore, there is also McGinn just behind the number ten role too.

Arsenal fans want Granit Xhaka dropped for Tottenham clash

[ad_pod ]

A number of Arsenal fans have called for head coach Unai Emery to drop Granit Xhaka from his starting XI for the clash with Tottenham Hotspur this weekend.

Xhaka missed Arsenal’s 2-1 win over Burnley on August 17 with a bruised lower back.

However, the Switzerland international was back for the 3-1 loss at Liverpool on Saturday – captaining the team from the middle of the park.

It does appear that the 26-year-old will be a key player under Emery this season but the Arsenal supporters do not want him in the XI against Spurs.

Indeed, when discussing team selection following the loss at Anfield, many of the club’s fans insisted that Xhaka should not start the North London derby.

The Gunners were much improved in their 3-1 loss at Liverpool at the weekend.

However, there will be pressure on the team to bounce back when they host Mauricio Pochettino’s side in the huge fixture on Sunday afternoon.

Aston Villa fans in support of Jack Grealish following Spurs defeat

[ad_pod ]

Aston Villa didn’t kick off their Premier League return in winning fashion but there were plenty of positives to take from the game.

Beginning your first top-flight campaign in three seasons against the Champions League runners-up, Tottenham Hotspur was never going to be an easy task.

Villa took the lead and looked competent for large periods of the game but it was a mistake from club captain Jack Grealish, who was caught on the ball close to his own box, that cost the Villans a goal.

Following the match, he tweeted his thoughts:

A number of Villa supporters reacted by throwing their weight behind the 23-year-old and the team.

One fan said it was because of him that the club are in the Premier League playing Champions League opposition rather than playing a team of Luton Town’s calibre whilst another added that it was a brilliant effort to keep them at bay for 75 minutes.

Others asked the midfielder to prove people wrong with one supporter claiming that it was a learning curve, using the old cliche that Rome wasn’t built in a day in comparison to Villa’s ambitions.

Here’s the best of the reaction…

Manchester City must get new contract for Fernandinho wrapped up immediately

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

According to The Sun, Fernandinho is “ready to wait” before entering into talks with Manchester City over a new contract.

What’s the word?

The Brazil international has had his season delayed due to his involvement in the Copa America, and his place in the first-team is under threat due to the arrival of big-money signing Rodri.

Despite having just nine months left on his existing deal with the club, The Sun claim the veteran midfielder has such a “strong relationship” with City and that there is “no hurry” on agreeing terms on an extension.

The report adds both parties are fine with kick-starting negotiations later on in the campaign as Pep Guardiola seeks to make it three Premier League titles in a row.

Experience

Fernandinho has been a cornerstone of City’s success since his arrival from Shakhtar Donetsk back in the summer of 2013. The Brazilian has formed an integral part of the side’s spine and proved his influence for Guardiola last season as he helped them land a domestic treble.

The holding midfielder does all the dirty work in midfield, and allows the Citizens’ forward players to do what they do best. Whilst the signing of Rodri will undoubtedly ease the load and reliance on Fernandinho, the City star offers a wealth of experience and Premier League know-how that the Spaniard simply doesn’t have yet.

When the club enter the business end of the season, and are challenging for league titles and European trophies, the Brazilian’s invaluable history will help replace some of the leadership that left with Vincent Kompany’s departure. So, whilst City may feel relaxed right now about negotiating a new contract with their prized midfielder, they simply must ensure they get the job done as soon as possible.

The former Shakhtar ace will be able to enter into discussions with foreign clubs in the January transfer window, and so the onus is really on City to be proactive with their contract talks.

Leeds need to take the money and run with Kalvin Phillips

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

According to The Sun, Kalvin Phillips is willing to force himself out of Leeds in a bid to get a move to Aston Villa.

What’s the word?

Phillips’ potential move away from Leeds has been one of the sagas of the summer from their perspective.

Back in June, The Telegraph reported that Villa were planning a £14m swoop for the midfielder before it was claimed by The Sun that the Yorkshire club wanted £30m for their 5 foot 10 general.

Whether he’ll stay has been uncertain for a while after Wolves and Bournemouth were also credited with interest back at the start of July.

However, it’s now been suggested that Phillips could be willing to force his way out of the club. The same report claims he could sit it out at Elland Road in 2018/19 before reviewing his future in a year.

Leeds must cash in

Losing Phillips would be a bitter blow to the Whites and the very fact they were demanding £30m for him earlier in the summer tells the story of how important he is to the side.

Under Marcelo Bielsa last term, he featured in defensive midfield, as well at centre back as he proved to be a crucial part of the team.

Interest from the Premier League is evidence of just how much he impressed.

But the fact is that if Phillips will again consider his future next summer when he’ll only have a year left on his contract, Leeds could be in great danger of receiving far less for his services.

Paul Bell hinted that Pontus Jansson was moved on due to financial fair play and if this is an issue, the club are surely better off moving him on now, than they would be for a cut-price deal.

The Sun suggests Villa won’t go over £15m in their pursuit for Phillips and as such, they’ll have to reconsider their £30m valuation.

After all, he’ll be worth far less if he continues to stall over signing a new contract.

If he has desires of leaving, this might just be a player Leeds have to bite the bullet on.

Liverpool can rely on Rhian Brewster amidst Sadio Mane’s early season absence

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s In Numbers series, which takes a statistical look at performances, season-long form and reported transfer targets…

As some of you may have heard, Liverpool’s first-team stars have been hard at work on international duty whilst others in the squad take a well deserved holiday.

After a gruelling 97-point Premier League campaign and a successful Champions League expedition last term, the likes of Joel Matip and Fabinho got to jet off and chill out.

Whilst they and others were letting their hair down, Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Alisson Becker embarked on international tournaments – the latter pair went away and won the Copa America, whilst Salah and Mane took part in the Africa Cup of Nations.

“It reminds me of a bus seat!” – Watch a damning verdict on Chelsea’s new kit in the video below…

Out of all of them, it was Mane who finished latest after making the AFCON final with Senegal, which they unfortunately lost to Algeria.

Due to his exploits, the former Southampton man will miss the Community Shield game against Manchester City, and will return to the club just four days before the opening game against Norwich.

Embarking on a season without the Premier League Golden Boot winner may worry some Liverpool fans, and quite understandably – however, they don’t need to worry thanks to Rhian Brewster’s excellent pre-season form.

The teenager has had an enormous amount of trust placed in him by Jurgen Klopp, and has begun to repay that trust with four goals and an assist in pre-season so far.

Brewster’s goals were all impressive, and showed his wide array of striking skills ranging from instinctive follow-ups, confidently struck penalties and sharp aerial instincts.

If he had just been signed for £30m and was performing like this, you can only imagine the hype surrounding his form, so it is only fair that we praise Brewster for his efforts substantially.

It may only be pre-season, but the 19-year-old is in a purple patch and has the wind in his sails after Klopp breathed life into them.

From what we’ve seen, he can capably stand in for Mane for a few early season games at least, and potentially be a key figure alongside the Senegalese forward later on once he regains his fitness.

Liverpool needn’t worry about being without their 22-goal attacker with Brewster around.

Future stars: Leeds fans react as Under-14s triumph in Norway

[ad_pod ]

Leeds United’s official Twitter account announced on Tuesday afternoon that the team’s Under-14 side had won the Flint Micasa Cup in Norway.

Indeed, the Whites triumphed courtesy of a 2-1 win over Viking in the final.

And the news led to a number of the club’s supporters taking to social media to lavish praise on the youth side.

There is no getting away from the fact that it was a hugely disappointing end to the 2018-19 campaign for the first team.

Indeed, defeat to Frank Lampard’s Derby County in the Championship playoff semi-finals saw their hopes of earning promotion to the Premier League come to an end.

The future certainly looks bright, though, with a number of players impressing for the club’s Under-23 side last term.

And now the Under-14s have shown their quality by triumphing in Norway.
