England U17s face do-or-die qualifier! Young Lions stunned by Lithuania in UEFA U17 Euro First Qualifier and must beat Sweden to progress

England fell to a 1-0 loss to Scotland earlier this week and were defeated by the same scoreline by Lithuania on Friday. Tomas Jonyla scored the only goal of the game as he got the better of George Mair with a 17th-minute free kick. Lithuania were able to hold out for a narrow victory, which leaves England with a mountain to climb if they wish to progress to the U17 Euros.

    England have lost back-to-back matches

The Young Lions crashed to a narrow defeat against Scotland at the Excelsior Stadium on Tuesday as Luke Douglas broke the deadlock in the 94th minute as the two sides looked set to share the spoils. Charlie Holland was sent off at the full time whistle in the 1-0 defeat for throwing the ball at an opponent after Luke Douglas bagged a late, late winner.

Douglas celebrated the victory to the fullest, which Holland took offence to. The young Chelsea midfielder threw the ball into Douglas' face right in front of the referee, who promptly sent the England skipper off.

And without their captain, England struggled on Friday as they failed to break Lithuania down. Oliver Boast came close to drawing England level only to hit the post as Lithuania held out for a huge win in their own bid to secure a spot at the U17 Euros.

England now need to beat Sweden next week if they are to harbour any hopes of progressing to the tournament. Liam Bramley's side have lost both games so far and sit bottom of Group H heading into the final round of matches next week.

  • England U17s well represented

There is ample Premier League representation in the England U17s for their meetings with Scotland, Lithuania and Sweden. George Mair of Newcastle United has started between the sticks for both games so far and is expected to keep his place between the sticks for Monday's must-win game. Fellow Newcastle player Sam Alabi captained the side in the absence of Holland.

Elsewhere, Chelsea pair Calvin Diakite and Mahdi Nicoll-Jazuli both featured from the outset against Lithuania, as did Arsenal duo Kyran Thompson and Josiah King. Young Gunners teammate Marli Salmon came off in the bench in the 69th minute, while Tottenham forward Oliver Boast led the charge for Bramley's side.

Manchester City, Leicester and Everton stars Archie Thornton, Hugo De Lisle and Reuben Gokah also made the cut for the Young Lions on Friday.

How does the qualification system work?

The top two teams from each group progress into League A, which will consist of seven groups of four teams vying for a spot in the finals. And only the winner of each group will progress to the finals, which take place in 2026.

England, therefore, are in danger of missing out on a place in the 2026 finals altogether after losing both games so far.

England won the competition in 2010 as they beat Spain 2-1 after extra time courtesy of goals from Andre Wisdom and Connor Wickham. Gerard Deulofeu scored Spain's goal in their narrow loss in Liechtenstein, while Ross Barkley, Jack Butland and Conor Coady were also part of the England setup 15 years ago.

And England followed up their 2010 triumph with victory in Malta in 2014, as they beat the Netherlands on penalties in the final. Dominic Solanke scored England's goal in the showpiece event, which ended 1-1, while Ryan Ledson, Taylor Moore, Callum Cooke and Jonjoe Kenny all scored from the spot in a 4-1 shootout triumph.

Joe Gomez and Patrick Roberts also featured for the Young Lions back in 2014, while Gregor Kobel, Steven Bergwijn, Ruben Neves, Enes Unal and Renato Sanches also featured for their respective nations in Malta.

Portugal are the current champions having eased to a 3-0 victory over France earlier this year in Albania. Spain, though, are the most successful team in the competition's history having won the U17 Euros nine times in their history.

Carlson the rock as Glamorgan solidify promotion challenge

Glamorgan 327 (Kellaway 90, Ingram 87, Agar 4-58, Parkinson 4-103) and 189 for 5 (Carlson 89*, Parkinson 4-82) beat Kent 155 (Bell-Drummond 55, van der Gugten 3-27, Harris 3-35) and 360 (Finch 68, Stewart 63) by five wicketsStand-in captain Kiran Carlson lifted Glamorgan into promotion places with a five-wicket win over Kent at Sophia Gardens.Kent’s winless run in the Rothesay County Championship continued for an eighth match after setting just 189, which they were unable to defend on a sun-beaten day four in Cardiff. The visitors remain bottom of Division Two with their last win coming in April while Glamorgan move up to second ahead of Derbyshire.Carlson eliminated any concerns of defeat from 25 for 2 with an nerveless 89 not out, negating a tireless spell from Matt Parkinson who claimed 4 for 82.Nerves would’ve been in both dressing rooms after Kent dominated day three albeit to only give themselves half-a-chance. Glamorgan had a full day to find 164 with eight wickets in hand in sunny conditions with a Kookaburra ball that would age.Glamorgan’s openers faltered on the previous evening under dim light and a brutal spell from Wes Agar, which left Carlson and nightwatcher James Harris to resume the innings.A drop at slip from Daniel Bell-Drummond with Carlson reverse-sweeping on 9 could’ve been a turning point as the Welshman took full advantage of the life.Harris wasn’t as fortunate with his edge to slip off Parkinson, which brought Billy Root to the crease. The left-hander, playing in his first game this season, showed innovation against the vast turn from Parkinson’s legspin, looking to sweep or defend as his only options – including getting off the mark first ball with a reverse-sweep for a single. While his brother was passing Jacques Kallis and Rahul Dravid in Test folklore at Old Trafford, Root was playing a vital role in taking Glamorgan to a promotion-chasing victory with 30 from 31 balls in a 68-run partnership; a potentially key innings for his Glamorgan future, lifting his side from a precarious position.Carlson took a leaf out of Root’s book as the certainty of victory increased, reversing and hard sweeping to go with his typically elegant open-faced guides and back-foot punches to accumulate with ease.Root’s dismissal brought about another twist, with 81 still needed when Colin Ingram strode out. Glamorgan’s leading run-scorer this season demonstrated his status with a fearless attack of the bowlers to leave 20 runs needed after lunch with a second 50-plus stand of the session. The South African was unable to see home the win with his captain after being dismissed first ball of the afternoon but No. 7 Ben Kellaway ensured no concerns for the Welsh county as the progressed to victory.

Elly De La Cruz Injected Himself Into the Tyreek Hill-Noah Lyles Debate

As Miami Dolphins All-Pro wide receiver Tyreek Hill and three-time Olympic medalist and sprinter Noah Lyles bicker about who would win in a race, Cincinnati Reds star shortstop Elly De La Cruz has something to say.

De La Cruz took to X, formerly Twitter, on Thursday night and injected himself into the debate between the two speedsters.

"They think they’re fast! I’ll beat them for sure," De La Cruz wrote.

The feud between Hill and Lyles all began back in August following the latter's bronze medal win in the men's 200m at the Paris Olympics, when Hill accused him of faking the effects of the COVID-19 virus following his somewhat disappointing showing. The Dolphins wideout then declared he would beat Lyles in a race. In response, Lyles pretended to forget Hill's name.

Hill then reignited the debate following Lyles's recent race against popular YouTube streamer IShowSpeed, who was narrowly bested by the American sprinter. Hill poked fun at Lyles, who later responded by saying he would defeat the Dolphins receiver in a race just as he did against iShowSpeed.

And while this debate seems to be squarely between the 4.29-speed of Hill and the American-record-breaking sprints of Lyles, don't discount De La Cruz.

Since his MLB debut in June of 2023, he has stolen 102 bases, including a league-leading 67 swipes in '24. De La Cruz ranked first in MLB in the Statcast metric Sprint Speed in '23 and third in the metric in '24. The Reds star was clocked running from home-to-home in under 15 seconds while hitting an inside-the-park home run back in April.

In short, he's fast.

Hopefully one day the sports world gets to see just how fast in comparison to the likes of Hill and Lyles.

Alex Bregman Sends Short Message to Fans After Potential Final Game With Astros

There's a real possibility star third baseman Alex Bregman has played his last game for the Houston Astros. He appeared to acknowledge as much on Wednesday following the team's exit from the postseason after their wild-card round loss to the Detroit Tigers.

Bregman is set to hit the open market as a free agent for the first time in his career this offseason, having failed to agree to a new contract with the team. He sent a brief message to Astros fans on social media after the team's season-ending loss.

"Thank you Houston," wrote Bregman, keeping his message short but sweet.

It's not certain that Bregman will leave Houston in the offseason. After the loss, he admitted he was hopeful he'd be back in an Astros uniform in 2025 and beyond.

"I hope so, but we'll see what happens," Bregman told reporters. "I’m gonna let (agent Scott Boras) and the team handle that. Obviously, it's free agency, and I've never experienced that before. I'll let him and all the teams handle that."

Longtime teammate Jose Altuve was more direct with his assessment of Bregman's future.

"I don't want to get to the idea thinking about last game with Breggy," said Altuve. "I'm pretty confident that he's going to be our third baseman next year. We have to. We're not going to be the same organization without him."

Bregman, a two-time All-Star, has been the Astros' third baseman since he debuted in 2016. He's won two World Series' with the organization, serving as a franchise cornerstone during his tenure.

In 2024, he slashed .260/.315/.453 with 26 home runs, 75 RBIs and 151 hits while recording a 4.1 WAR. His future is uncertain, though it's clear that those within the organization would be overjoyed to see him return, as would the fans.

Full View of Hurricane Milton's Damage to Tropicana Field Is Devastating

Hurricane Milton hammered Tropicana Field.

On Thursday, as Florida begins the cleanup from the hurricane that mauled it on Wednesday, the Tampa Bay Rays' home park stands as a monument to the devastation Milton left in its wake.

The roof could be seen blowing off the ballpark late Wednesday night, and on Thursday we got a full look at the aftermath via drone footage. Most of the roof is gone, parts of it fell onto the stands and field, and sections of the field look mangled as well.

Video is below.

That's a really sad sight and speaks to the power Milton hit Tampa Bay with. The hurricane reached Category 5 status in the Gulf of Mexico, but made landfall on the west coast of Florida as a Category 3 storm. It fell to Category 1 as it crossed the state.

Tropicana Field opened in 1990 and has been the home of the Rays since thier inaugural season in 1998. In July of this year a deal was struck to build a new part for the club. Construction is set to begin in early 2025, and is expected to be finished by Opening Day in 2028.

Hopefully, like the rest of Florida, the cleanup and repair efforts on Tropicana Field can commence quickly.

Bean and gone for Durham as record ton keeps Yorkshire top

Left-hander belts 53-ball hundred to maintain Yorkshire’s relentless march towards knockouts

Yorkshire 354 for 7 (Bean 102*, Wharton 84) beat Durham 142 (White 3-24) by 212 runsFinlay Bean broke Yorkshire’s record for their fastest-ever List A century with a 53-ball hundred in a landslide 212-run win over Durham at Scarborough to maintain their relentless march towards the Metro Bank One-Day Cup knockouts.Bean, batting at No. 5, boosted the Group B leaders to a total of 354 for 7 with a destructive innings of 102 not out off 57 balls, with eight fours and six sixes. James Wharton also contributed a dynamic career best 84. In only his second appearance of the competition, Bean’s maiden List A hundred set Yorkshire up for the fifth win in six matches.Durham then crumbled to 142 all out in 36 overs, losing their fourth game in seven to all but end their knockout hopes. This was their heaviest-ever List A defeat by runs margin. New-ball seamer Jack White returned 3 for 24 from eight overs for the hosts.Yorkshire started solidly under an overcast sky on a pitch with pace and bounce, reaching 99 for 2 after 20 overs. Imam-ul-Haq was caught behind pulling at Ben Raine’s seam for 22 – his lowest score in five One-Day Cup matches – and Adam Lyth caught at deep backward square-leg for 37 following a top-edge against former team-mate Will Rhodes.Having reached 123 for 2 after 25 overs, Will Luxton and Wharton looked to accelerate, and did so for a period as they shared 88 in entertaining fashion. Luxton pulled Raine for six over deep backward square-leg and Wharton also pulled with authority en route to a 54-ball fifty.Almost immediately afterwards, Luxton – on 46 – miscued the pace of Sam Conners to midwicket with the score on 169 in the 33rd. But that only served to bring Bean to the crease, and what followed was sensational. He shared a 101-run stand for the fourth wicket with Wharton.Best known as a determined red-ball opener, Bean reached 50 off 33 balls and scored his second fifty off 20. All of his sixes were leg-side as he beat the previous record for Yorkshire’s fastest List A hundred by seven balls. Lyth, on this ground in 2016, reached his hundred in 60 balls in a two-wicket win over Northamptonshire.Wharton fell short of his own maiden List A hundred as the White Rose scored 174 in the last 15 overs.Durham’s chase then got off to a nightmare start at nine for two in the fifth over, which included two wickets for Ben Coad’s seam and the visitors failing to score off the first 22 balls of the innings.Coad bowled Alex Lees for nought and had Emilio Gay caught at second slip but walked off the field immediately after the second wicket with a suspected hamstring injury. Still, it didn’t hamper Yorkshire in the short term – even if it may do in the next month and a bit.Durham’s race was run before it had got going, with them sinking to 32 for four in the 10th over. Matt Milnes had an uppercutting Colin Ackermann caught behind and White forced captain Ollie Robinson to miscue to Bean at point. George Hill and captain Dom Bess then removed Scott Borthwick and Robbie Bowman before Durham reached 50.Rhodes and George Drissell were Durham’s only two batters to reach 20, with 27 and a consolatory List A best 46 respectively. Rhodes was caught at short third off Lyth’s offspin before Drissell skied White to mid-on, leaving the score at 131 for 9. White finished things off by trapping Codi Yusuf lbw.

0 tackles & 0 shots: Slot must drop Liverpool flop who was worse than Wirtz

Liverpool have lost seven of their last ten matches in all competitions after they were hammered 3-0 by Manchester City at The Etihad in the Premier League on Sunday.

The Premier League champions have now lost five of their 11 matches in the division so far this season, per Sofascore, after losing four of their 38 games in the 2024/25 campaign.

After the match, as shown in the clip above, former Manchester United midfielder Roy Keane suggested that the Reds should not be considered in the race for the title, and it is hard to argue with.

The current run of form, their position in the league, and their performance against Manchester City do not suggest that they are likely to retain their crown in the 2025/26 campaign.

Liverpool’s current situation is particularly frustrating for the club when you consider the significant money that they splashed on new signings during the summer transfer window in a bid to strengthen their squad.

Attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz was signed from Bayer Leverkusen for a club-record, at the time, fee of £116m, yet he failed to make an impact once again.

Why Liverpool should be worried about Florian Wirtz

It is fair to expect that a £116m signing would be able to make a fairly immediate impact for the club, but he has been anonymous far too often in his Liverpool career so far.

The Germany international produced 16 goals and 14 assists in all competitions for Leverkusen in the 2024/25 campaign, per Sofascore, which led to the Reds splashing a gigantic fee on his services.

This shows that he has the technical ability to make an impact in the final third. That was further evidenced by his two assists against a Bundesliga team in Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League last month.

However, the physicality and intensity of the Premier League has proven a bit too much for Wirtz when it comes to making an impact with goals and assists at the top end of the pitch.

Per Sofascore, the 22-year-old attacking midfielder has no goals and no assists in 11 appearances in the division for Liverpool since his £116m transfer to Anfield in the summer.

As you can see in the table above, Wirtz’s performance against Manchester City on Sunday lacked substance, with no shots on target, key passes, or ‘big chances’ created.

He was efficient in his passing and won half of his duels, to his credit, but his lack of physicality meant that he was unable to really threaten the Cityzens backline, marshalled brilliantly by Ruben Dias.

Liverpool should, therefore, be worried because his performances are not improving and his only goal contributions, outside of the Community Shield, came against a Bundesliga team.

Wirtz needs to adjust to the intensity of the English game, and quickly, to start proving why the Reds were right to spend so much money on his signature this year.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

The Germany international is not the only player whose performances are concerning, though, as central defender Ibrahima Konate put in another disappointing display.

Why Ibrahima Konate should be dropped by Liverpool

The French centre-back must be ruthlessly ditched from the starting line-up by Arne Slot when the team returns to action after the international break, because he put in a dismal showing against City.

For the opening goal from Erling Haaland, Konate was unable to time his jump correctly and allowed the Norwegian giant to beat him to the header, which landed in the back of the net.

That was followed up by some passive defending in the second half for the third goal. Jeremy Doku seemed destined to cut onto his right foot to shoot from distance, but Konate did not shape his body to react to the situation and allowed the shot to come in almost uncontested.

The France international, who was called “horrific” by Liverpool supporter Lawrie on X, was even worse than Wirtz against Pep Guardiola’s side, as he made costly errors for two of the three goals, whilst the German midfielder simply did not do much of note.

Whilst Wirtz, at least, won half of his duels in the game, Konate struggled with the physical challenge posed by Haaland, which is not a surprise given the Norway international’s presence and style of play.

As you can see in the table above, the former RB Leipzig man lost the majority of his duels on the ground and in the air, which shows that he was far too easy to beat in duels throughout the match.

On top of that, the central defender did not step in to make a single tackle or interception, and did not attempt any dribbles to get his team up the pitch to bypass the first line of City’s press.

Passive was the word of the day for Liverpool and Konate, as evidenced by both the result and his individual statistics, which is why Slot may want to shake things up with some changes to his starting line-up after the break.

The France international could find himself out of the team when the Reds next play, with Joe Gomez waiting in the wings for his chance to start at the heart of the defence next to Virgil van Dijk.

The German struggled, yet again, for the Reds against Manchester City.

Whilst it is now down to Slot to decide whether or not that is the right call to make, Konate’s performance on Sunday has given the manager a decision to make.
