Man Utd enquire over signing £120k-a-week Sesko alternative and get reply

Manchester United have enquired about the potential signing of a “completely unique” striker this summer, according to a new claim from Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg.

Man Utd still searching for new striker

It has been a good summer transfer window to date for United, with Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo having the potential to be strong signings from Wolves and Brentford respectively.

United desperately need to sign an elite striker, however, with Rasmus Hojlund not yet doing enough to suggest that he is the answer to lead the line for Ruben Amorim in the coming years.

Rasmus Hojlund

RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko appears to be the current front-runner to come in this summer, with the Slovenian ultimately now having to choose between the Red Devils and Newcastle United.

While some reports have suggested that the Magpies have won the race to sign Sesko, a different update has claimed that Director of Football Jason Wilcox is confident of getting his man and bringing him to United. Now, another huge player has been mentioned as an alternative option.

Man Utd make contact over signing "unique" striker

According to Sky Germany‘s Plettenberg on X, Manchester United recently enquired about Newcastle striker Alexander Isak, amid strong interest from Liverpool.

In truth, it looks unlikely that United will be able to sign Isak, with Liverpool the obvious favourites to get him, and the player himself keen on a move to Anfield and turning down any chance of a move to Old Trafford.

That said, if the Red Devils were suddenly able to strike a deal for the £120,000-a-week star, it could have been a game-changing piece of business, with journalist Matthew Ketchell speaking glowingly of him.

“He’s got a real easy-on-the-eye, unique style about his play, it’s almost balletic the way he moves, it’s completely unique. The balance he has, the speed he has, the strength he has, the intelligence, it’s kind of all there. He had a little bit of an issue with one-on-ones last season (2023/24), start of this season, where he was going through on goal and not taking his chances – he seems to have cleaned that up.”

Assuming United miss out on Isak, it then has to be a case of them signing Sesko instead, with the Leipzig star having the potential to be a huge hit at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils don’t have Champions League football to offer him, however, or any European football for that matter, whereas Newcastle are playing in the top club competition next season.

Hopefully, the lure of United ultimately proves too great for Sesko to turn down, but missing out on him would be a big blow, forcing the club to look at an alternative.

Lionesses star Beth Mead makes Women's Super League history after bagging two assists as Arsenal start season in style

Beth Mead has made WSL history after becoming the first-ever player to reach 50 assists in the competition as Arsenal won 4-1 on the opening day.

Mead created history after laying on two goals for her team-mates in their convincing victory over London City Lionesses. Despite only coming on as a substitute in the 76th minute in place of Chloe Kelly, Mead set up quick-fire 83rd and 84th minute goals to secure a 4-1 victory and her own name in the history books. As reported by Opta, she's the first player to hit a half-century of assists in the competition.

Mead played a key role as England's Lionesses won the European Championship for the second consecutive time this summer. The theme of substitutes sealing victory during the tournament was replicated in Arsenal's opening-day WSL victory, as Mead laid on two goals for fellow substitutes Stina Blackstenius and Frida Maanum in the closing stages.

DID YOU KNOW?

It has been an incredible few months for Mead, who also tasted Champions League glory with the Gunners over Barcelona in May. The 2022 BBC Sports Personality of he Year winner has had a career laden with success and this latest record of 51 WSL assists only adds to an ever-growing legacy for the 30-year-old. Interestingly, newly-promoted London City Lionesses reportedly attempted to sign her in the summer before Mead inflicted opening-day misery on the club.

Pant to go into mega auction after not being retained by Delhi Capitals

Rishabh Pant will be among the high-profile names at the 2025 IPL mega auction after not being retained by Delhi Capitals (DC). ESPNcricinfo has learned that talks between DC’s ownership group and Pant failed after stretching over the past few months and Wednesday. The franchise, though, has retained four players: the spin pair of Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav, South Africa batter Tristan Stubbs and uncapped Indian wicketkeeper-batter Abishek Porel.DC will have two RTM card options at the auction, and, it is understood that they will attempt to buy back Pant, who joined the franchise in 2016 and became their key player, including taking over captaincy in 2022. In case DC can’t buy him back in the auction, they will have to pick a new captain. With three capped and one uncapped retentions, DC’s purse will be depleted by at least INR 47 crore (18+14+11+ 4) and they will have INR 73 crore to build their squad at the auction.Axar had been with DC since 2019, his second franchise after Punjab Kings (PBKS), Kuldeep since 2022 (after five seasons with KKR) and Porel since 2023. Pant, Kuldeep, Axar and Porel had all been retained by DC before the last auction where the franchise had bought Stubbs for his base price of INR 50 lakh (approx. US$ 60,000 at the time). The turnaround of events concerning Pant’s future at DC have been dramatic. Months leading into the retention deadline (expires Thursday at 5pm IST) it was expected Pant would be DC’s’ top retention. However, it is learnt that not everybody in the leadership group wanted him to continue as the franchise’s captain. Both DC’s co-owners, GMR Group’s Kiran Grandhi and JSW Sports’ Parth Jindal, had in-person meetings with Pant. It is learned that Pant had his ideas and suggestions of how to go forward. Eventually, though, both the player and the ownership group couldn’t reach an agreement. In 2021, Pant became the fifth-youngest captain in the IPL when he initially took charge in interim capacity at DC before the franchise retained him in the leadership position which lasted until 2024 season.Pant led DC in 44 matches from 2021 to 2024 (barring 2023 after his car crash) of which they won 24 and lost 19. As captain, Pant scored 1205 runs while averaging 35.44 – almost identical to his overall IPL average of 35.31 – at a strike rate of 143.96, only slightly worse than his IPL strike rate of 148.93.

    WHAT HAPPENED?

Mexico settled for a goalless draw against Japan in a friendly at Oakland Coliseum, leaving head coach Javier Aguirre with more questions than answers as the 2026 World Cup cycle continues.

The “Vasco” was blunt in his post-match remarks, admitting the Asian side deserved the result.

“It was a preparation game, but we weren’t better than our opponent,” Aguirre said. “We didn’t deserve to win. They made it difficult, pressed with intensity, and the draw was fair. It wasn’t spectacular, but matches like this help us evaluate where we are.”

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Japan dictated much of the first half, forcing goalkeeper Luis Malagón into key saves and even requiring Johan Vásquez to clear a shot off the line. Mexico’s night worsened in the 28th minute when captain Edson Álvarez exited with a hamstring injury, later replaced by Erik Lira.

Although Hirving Lozano’s introduction in the second half injected energy, Mexico still struggled to break down Japan’s organized back line. To make matters worse, César Montes was shown a red card after VAR review, leaving to finish the game with 10 men. Despite the numerical advantage, Japan couldn’t find a breakthrough either, and the score remained 0-0.

WHAT JAVIER AGUIRRE AND HIRVING LOZANO SAID

Aguirre acknowledged Japan’s superior pace and physicality.

“They surprised us with their speed and intensity. Most of their players are in Europe, so their rhythm is different. We gave away the first half, not because of attitude, but because they outplayed us," he said.

Still, he noted positives in the second half, pointing to missed chances from Lozano, Germán Berterame, and Lira.

Meanwhile, San Diego FC forward Hirving Lozano shared his thoughts on returning to the Mexican national team.

“I really wanted to come back to the national team. Thank God I was given the opportunity, Javier gave me the opportunity, and I have to make the most of it. I need to work hard, perform well, and keep pushing forward,” he said.

It had been over a year since Lozano last featured for , with his previous appearance coming in 2024.

“This is a very good squad, it has very important and very talented players. I think we’re facing a team that is always at the World Cup and that now has some great players,” he added.

    WHAT NEXT FOR MEXICO?

Mexico will now turn their focus to South Korea on Tuesday, while Japan will face the United States that same day.

Ex-Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag approached over unlikely return to former club following brutal Bayer Leverkusen sacking

Erik ten Hag has been approached regarding a shock return to one of his former clubs. The ex-Manchester United boss finds himself out of work again after seeing his spell at Bayer Leverkusen cut brutally short. The Dutch tactician is mulling over what to do next, with one invitation having already been received that would have taken him back to his homeland.

How long did Ten Hag last in charge of Leverkusen?

Ten Hag, who was appointed as successor to Real Madrid-bound Xabi Alonso over the summer, was given just two Bundesliga games at the helm of Leverkusen. They saw enough during that short tenure to suggest that the agreement was the wrong option for all concerned.

Ten Hag had previously been relieved of his duties at Old Trafford in October 2024, with the Red Devils parting with his services despite enjoying FA Cup and Carabao Cup triumphs under the one-time Ajax coach.

Ten Hag boasts emotional connection to Twente

It has now been revealed that Ten Hag was approached by FC Twente after hitting the market once more, with the 55-year-old having taken in three spells with the Eredivisie outfit in his playing days.

Twente have parted company with Joseph Oosting, leaving them with a void to fill in their dugout. Technical director Jan Streuer has said of the search for a new boss: “I’ve only made inquiries. I haven’t had a proper conversation with anyone yet.

“I’ve made a few phone calls to inquire about the situation of certain managers. [Mark] van Bommel and Ten Hag were among them, along with a few others. Some are still committed to a club, while others are free.

“It might seem like we’ve already sat down with Van Bommel, but it was just a phone call. He wanted to bring four of his own people. Some coaches work that way, and I can understand that, that you want to work with people you know well. But we also have confidence in our own people. And we’re not going to fire three or four people just to appoint a new coach.”

He's worse than Antony: £73m Man Utd ace has agreed personal terms to leave

Manchester United continued their pre-season preparations for the 2025/26 campaign with a 2-1 win over Premier League rivals West Ham United in America on Saturday night.

Bruno Fernandes scored both of the team’s goals in a narrow win over the Hammers, scoring from the spot in the first half before delivering a fantastic finish in the second.

There was another outing for new signing Matheus Cunha, who played the opening 66 minutes of the game, but Bryan Mbeumo was not ready to don the shirt for the first time.

Whilst fans have had the chance to watch last season’s team, along with Cunha, ramp up their preparations to improve on last year’s dismal showing, there are a number of players who have not been part of the travelling party.

Wolverhampton Wanderers'MatheusCunha

Ruben Amorim decided to leave several players at home for this tour and the Premier League summer series, as the club are looking to move on from them this summer.

One of the players in the ‘bomb squad’ is Brazilian forward Antony, who spent the second half of last season on loan with Real Betis in Spain.

Why Man Utd should sell Antony

It simply has not worked out for the left-footed dud in England and it appears to be the right time to allow him to move on from Old Trafford on a permanent basis, after a successful loan spell.

United reportedly agreed an £85m deal with Ajax to sign Antony in the summer of 2022 to bolster Erik ten Hag’s options at the top end of the pitch, but he has only mustered up 12 goals and five assists in 96 appearances for the club to date.

The 25-year-old star has not offered enough in the final third to suggest that he has much of a future in English football, rarely scoring or creating goals in his three years in Manchester so far, which is why it could be the right move to cash in on him this summer.

It could also be a smart time to cash in on the winger because he is fresh off the back of a successful loan spell with Real Betis, which shows that he does have the quality to make an impact in other leagues in Europe.

As you can see in the table above, the former Ajax star caught the eye with nine goals and 13 ‘big chances’ created in 26 appearances for the Spanish side, which may help United to attract interest from other clubs this summer.

Whilst it remains to be seen where Antony will end up by the conclusion of the summer transfer window, there is an even bigger United flop closing in on a move away.

Man Utd flop agrees personal terms on exit

According to the print edition of Corriere dello Sport (26/07/2025), as relayed by Tutto Mercato Web, Jadon Sancho has agreed personal terms with Italian giants Juventus.

The report claims that the England international, who is not part of the club’s pre-season tour, has verbally agreed to a five-year contract with the Old Lady, which would see him earn around £5.2m-per-season.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

It states that Sancho is aware that his race is run at Manchester United and he is willing to drop his wage demands from the £8.7m-per-season he is said to earn at Old Trafford in order to seal a move to Italy.

However, the sticking point is currently the transfer fee. United want a fee of around £22m for the former Borussia Dortmund star, whilst Juventus are currently offering up to £17m.

Chelsea's JadonSanchocelebrates scoring their first goal

This is a move that appears to be heading in the right direction, though, given that he has already agreed personal terms, which means that flop could be closing in on an exit from Old Trafford.

Why Sancho is even worse than Antony

Cashing in on Sancho would be a great move for United because he has flopped in Manchester and is currently even worse than Antony as a wide option.

The English forward joined from Borussia Dortmund for a fee of £73m in the summer of 2021 and has scored 12 goals in all competitions for the Red Devils in the subsequent four years, which is as many as Antony has scored for the club in three years.

Sancho was not a part of Ten Hag’s plans at the start of last season and the Dutchman sent him out on loan to Chelsea for the 2025/26 campaign, but he struggled to offer consistent quality for the Blues.

As you can see in the table above, Sancho only averaged a goal or an assist every 3.23 appearances in all competitions for Chelsea last term, as Antony outperformed him during his five-month spell with Real Betis.

These statistics show that the Brazilian winger was far more effective during his loan spell away from Old Trafford, as he scored more goals and created more ‘big chances’ in 16 fewer appearances.

As Jamie Redknapp said in the clip above, Sancho simply does not do enough in the final third to produce goals and assists to help his team win matches.

The 25-year-old flop has scored 12 goals in four years at United and only managed five goals in 42 games on loan at Chelsea, which backs up the pundit’s point about his lack of output at the top end of the pitch.

Therefore, United should be delighted that Sancho has agreed personal terms with Juventus and is now closing in on an exit, with the finer details of the transfer fee just to be ironed out, because he is even worse than Antony, and possibly a bigger flop despite a smaller fee.

A dream partner for Isak: Liverpool in discussions to sign £87m winger

One thing’s for certain: Liverpool are primed for an eventful end to the summer transfer window.

FSG are diligent operators, with Anfield’s transfer strategy driven by two of the best in the business in Michael Edwards and sporting director Richard Hughes, and this was clear through the swift signings of full-backs Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong, and the British-record signing of playmaker Florian Wirtz, which was wrapped up in June.

However, the pursuit of Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak has been anything but expeditious, with the Reds having seen a British-record bid worth £110m plus add-ons rejected at the start of August, following weeks of intense speculation and suggestion that the Sweden international wants to move to Anfield.

Now, it’s getting messy. The 25-year-old is aggrieved about the way his and Newcastle’s transfer window has transpired, and is insistent that he has played his final match for the Magpies.

Liverpool need another striker, having sold Darwin Nunez to Al Hilal in a deal rising to £57m after parting ways with Luis Diaz, now garbed in Bayern Munich’s kit.

But did Liverpool’s Community Shield defeat against Crystal Palace make a comment on Arne Slot’s attacking line?

What the Community Shield told us

Last month, Liverpool signed Eintracht Frankfurt’s Hugo Ekitike for a £79m fee, adding one of the most talented forwards in Europe to Slot’s squad.

Isak’s future broods in the background, but the French forward stepped up and scored during the Community Shield at Wembley, expertly converting following Wirtz’s fizzed pass just four minutes into his debut.

The 23-year-old told Liverpool and the fanbase that he’s ready to become a major player at Anfield and in the Premier League, bearing the potential to rival the likes of Isak for a place as one of Europe’s top strikers.

Though defensive fragility and thinness were clear against the Eagles, the Merseysiders also lack depth up top. And though Ekitike is the real deal, it’s imperative that Hughes and co welcome another forward to Liverpool’s mix this month.

Liverpool lining up Isak alternative

Liverpool want Isak, but they are ready to pounce on other attacking targets should the need arise. And according to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, Bradley Barcola sits right at the top of the shortlist.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Discussing the Premier League champions’ outstanding transfer plans this summer with GIVEMESPORT, Romano confirmed that internal discussions have been held behind the scenes over a move for Barcola, 22, who has emerged as a superstar at PSG.

Instrumental in driving Luis Enrique’s quadruple-winning 2024/25 campaign, the France international has been valued at around €100m (equating to around £87m) by the French giants, who hope to tie Barcola down to a long and lucrative new contract in Paris.

Liverpool Barcola

The Telegraph’s Chris Bascombe has suggested Liverpool could move to sign a left-sided forward along with a nine such as Isak, and with that in mind, could the Reds not pull off a stunning double swoop?

Why Liverpool want Bradley Barcola

Barcola has flaws in his game; he’s certainly not the finished product. But how exciting is that? The French winger, after all, posted 21 goals and 21 assists apiece across all competitions for PSG last season, winning four major titles, including the Champions League.

Already considered to be a “world-class player” by Liverpool and Romano, Barcola’s pace and potency down the left flank suggest he could be the perfect Diaz replacement and contrast to the more goal-focused Cody Gakpo. While the Frenchman may be the Swede’s alternative at the moment, we can envisage a team where they co-exist.

Isak is a striker of startling completeness, and that’s why he could work so fluently with Barcola, whose grasp of the technical side of the game would work well alongside the Scandinavian talent’s goalscoring qualities.

Last season, it was clear that Eddie Howe reduced the scope of Isak’s game, thus streamlining his prolific capacity and giving rise to his standout strength.

Even so, Isak still enjoyed plenty of creative moments, with that fact further substantiated through his ranking among the top 16% of positional peers across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for shot-creating actions and the top 13% for progressive passes per 90, via FBref.

Slot loves players who can do multiple things, and so Isak’s role at number nine would come with the ancillary duty of supplying teammates.

Newcastle United's AlexanderIsakcelebrates scoring their first goal

This would be helpful for Barcola, who enjoyed much success in front of goal last year, albeit not producing true clinical results. Indeed, across PSG’s league and European campaigns, the £109k-per-week talent might have scored 17 goals, but he also missed 33 big chances, highlighting ample room for improvement there.

Luckily, he’s got a knack for finding space and shooting, and his 21-goal return last year is hardly something to be sniffed at.

With great ball-carrying ability, creative focus and the potential to become a truly deadly goalscorer, Barcola is surely the perfect partner for a striker like Isak, whose intelligence and off-the-ball movement would accommodate the France star when he wants the headlines.

And when Barcola is the one tasked with supplying Isak? Well, expect a seamless connection, striking fear into the rest of the Premier League and indeed Europe.

Spurs have now lost playmaker James Maddison to a crippling ACL rupture, with the England international poised to undergo surgery on his right knee after being stretchered off in a pre-season friendly against Newcastle last Sunday.

The 28-year-old had only just returned from a knee injury which kept him out of the Europa League final, but Frank won’t see Maddison don the Lilywhites jersey again for another six to nine months – which is the typical recovery time for ACL injuries.

FFC Spurs – James Maddison

This devastating blow comes right after legend Son Heung-min sealed an MLS record-breaking move to LAFC, bringing an end to his glittering 10-year stay at Spurs where he cemented himself as one of the club’s greatest ever Premier League players.

Frank has also confirmed that Dejan Kulusevski will remain out injured for a “long time” as well, so Tottenham go into their UEFA Super Clash against PSG next week in a very sorry state.

Some experts believe that the Sweden international may not return until November at the earliest, so it is absolutely non-negotiable that Daniel Levy enters the market for new forwards – or risk yet another lacklustre Premier League campaign right after their 17th-placed finish.

Tottenham have been linked with a host of attacking options in recent days, including the likes of Man City outcast Jack Grealish, AC Milan’s Rafael Leao, Liverpool sensation Harvey Elliott and Man City winger Savinho.

Now, as per journalist Graeme Bailey of TBR Football, versatile £212,000-per-week PSG forward Randal Kolo Muani remains a target for Frank’s side.

Despite being firmly out of Luis Enrique’s plans at the Parc des Princes, Kolo Muani enjoyed a stellar second half of 24/25 on loan at Juventus – showcasing his very best and letting suitors know that he still possesses serious quality.

At Eintracht Frankfurt, the Frenchman bagged 23 goals and 17 assists in all competitions during his best-ever season to date in 2022/2023, so he could be an excellent option.

Tottenham eye Randal Kolo Muani with PSG very keen to sell

According to Bailey and TBR, Tottenham are considering the signing of Kolo Muani, with Juve’s talks to sign the 26-year-old going nowhere.

However, they face competition from Newcastle, who are desperate to sign a striker after their failed move for Man United no.9 Benjamin Sesko.

France'sRandalKoloMuanireacts

“Kolo Muani has been set for Juventus for most of this summer, but his people have been doing work on other options in recent weeks as talks with PSG have stalled,” Bailey said.

“I am told that Kolo Muani was open to a move to England in January before he opted for Italy and Juve, but now a Premier League option is available again.

“Spurs are still interested, but Newcastle are now very much in the mix and pushing forward with talks as they are looking to see what a deal would look like.

“PSG are more than open to a deal, and we understand they have informed Juventus that they are now talking to other clubs.”

The former Bundesliga sensation can play as a centre-forward, second striker and in both wide areas – so he could be a very useful asset to Frank as a replacement for Son, or even Richarlison if the Brazilian leaves.
