    WHAT HAPPENED?

Palmeiras has reportedly submitted a multi-million dollar offer for Marcel Ruiz, the current Toluca midfielder and standout performer with the Mexican national team during the last Gold Cup. Despite the bid – believed to be around $14 million – journalist César Luis Merlo reported that Ruiz has no intention of leaving Mexican football for Brazil at this time.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Beyond the transfer speculation, Marcel Ruiz’s main goal is to move to European football – the only scenario in which he would consider leaving Toluca this summer. Unless an offer arrives from Europe, the midfielder is expected to stay with Los Diablos for at least one more tournament.

Following his strong performance in the Gold Cup, Ipswich Town from England’s second division made an offer, but Ruiz reportedly wasn’t interested in the move. The player is set to be part of Toluca’s roster for the upcoming Leagues Cup.

    WHAT ANTONIO MOHAMED SAID

“We hope he stays because he’s an extremely important player,” said the Argentine coach and reigning Liga MX champion. “We gave him limited minutes to manage his workload. The hope is that he remains with us – especially because, playing at this level and playing here, he has a better chance of making the World Cup squad.”

Rasmus Hojlund exit? Man Utd suitors fly to England to pursue move amid Benjamin Sesko transfer

Rasmus Hojlund's reported suitors have flown to England to explore a move for the Manchester United man amid Benjamin Sesko's impending arrival.

Hojlund faces uncertain futureMan Utd close in on Sesko dealDane suitors fly to EnglandFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

According to Corriere dello Sport, via Sport Witness, AC Milan representatives have flown to London to speak to United about the possibility of signing Hojlund. The report adds that United are interested in sending him out on loan but the Italian giants want a €35 million (£30m) option to buy inserted in a loan deal.

Hojlund recently stated that he plans to stay at United for the upcoming season, but this may change if Sesko joins from RB Leipzig in the coming days. The Dane is almost certainly going to be second choice to the 6ft 5in striker, so a late summer transfer window move could be on the cards.

DID YOU KNOW?

The report adds that progress has been made on a loan switch for Hojlund, with the 22-year-old seemingly keen on a Serie A return. Although Milan are said to want Hojlund for €35m, United may try and get as much as €50m (£43m) for the ex-Atalanta forward.

It remains to be seen if Hojlund, who joined United two years ago for a fee worth up to £72m ($96m), will still be at Old Trafford when the summer window shuts in just over three weeks. If Sesko arrives, speculation over a move for the Denmark international will only increase.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar on his nerveless final over: 'I was not thinking about the result'

Cummins, meanwhile, was “just thinking Super Over” in nail-biting finish against Royals

ESPNcricinfo staff02-May-20243:17

‘We saw the vintage Bhuvi today’

Sunrisers Hyderabad captain Pat Cummins “didn’t really think” his team had the game in the bag till the very last ball was bowled, and was glad to come out on the right side of a thriller against Rajasthan Royals.”Amazing game. That last ball I kind of forgot if we take a wicket, we could win. I was just thinking Super Over,” Cummins said.Chasing 202, Royals lost Jos Buttler and Sanju Samson in the first over but Yashasvi Jaiswal and Riyan Parag set up the chase with a 134-run stand for the third wicket. Royals already had the finishing line in sight at the end of 15 overs, when they needed 45 to win off 30 balls with seven wickets in hand and a set Parag at the crease. But Cummins came back to take out Parag, T Natarajan dismissed Shimron Hetmyer, and then Cummins bowled a nerveless 19th over where he went for just seven runs leaving Bhuvneshwar Kumar 12 to defend off the last. Rovman Powell brought down the equation to two off one, but Bhuvneshwar kept his cool as he speared in a low full toss to ping the batter right in front and send the Hyderabad crowd into a frenzy.”It is T20 cricket, we get used to batters getting them over the line but when you get to that last over, you do feel like anything can happen,” Cummins said. “And yeah Bhuvi [Bhuvneshwar] just nailed six yorkers pretty much.”Bhuvneshwar, who took home the Player of the Match award for his figures of 3 for 41, said his mind was blank while bowling the last over, emphasising that his focus was on the process rather than the result.”I told everyone process is a very important thing. I was virtually thoughtless; I was not thinking about the result. I was just trying to do what I can do,” he said after the game. “I knew if I could bowl just two good balls, and if it went to the last ball, I knew anything could happen. It was a full toss, I know, and he missed it.”Pat Cummins bowled a stunning 19th where he conceded only seven•BCCISRH were also forced to have an extra fielder inside the circle as a penalty for not bowling their overs in time. But that did not bother Bhuvneshwar. “I was not thinking about the one extra fielder up, or whatever the restriction was, I was detached from the result. I wasn’t thinking about where the fielder is. I was so focused on the process; that was the only thing I was doing,” he said. It’s not been the best of seasons for Bhuvneshwar, who has gone wicketless in five of ten games so far. But on a day when the ball swung considerably under lights, the Bhuvneshwar of old came into his own. In the first over of the chase, he first removed Buttler with an outswinger that was edged to slip and then made a mess of Samson’s stumps with a peach of an inswinger.”It was the first match the ball swung so much,” he said. “I can’t really pinpoint where the ball swung last, but the way it swing I really enjoyed it. When it swings, you are always on top of the game, you try to take wickets and luckily, I got wickets.”That SRH reached 201 was down to Nitish Kumar Reddy’s stylish 76 off 42, during which he strung together vital partnerships with Travis Head and Heinrich Klaasen. Cummins was all praise for how Reddy went about it. “He is fantastic,” Cummins said.”He sums up the conditions really well, took the first ten balls to get himself in and then hit the ball basically wherever he wanted. He is amazing, great in the field, and gives a couple of handy overs [with the ball] as well.”

Per, Chelsea are open to selling Jackson this summer as they pursue moves to sign Alejandro Garnacho and Xavi Simons from Manchester United and RB Leipzig respectively. The Blues have signed Liam Delap, Jamie Gittens, and Joao Pedro already this summer, but Jackson is said to prefer staying at the club despite the fact he is likely to fall down Enzo Maresca's pecking order.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Newcastle have emerged as a suitor for Jackson as they run the risk of missing out on Benjamin Sesko, who appears set to move to the Red Devils instead. Ruben Amorim's side have also been linked with Jackson, as have AC Milan, but United are unlikely to compete for his signature. The Blues have placed an £80 million ($107m) asking price on the Senegal international but Newcastle would be able to fund that if they agree to sell Alexander Isak to Liverpool amid reports of a £150m ($200m) bid.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Jackson has made a total of 81 appearances for the club, scoring 30 goals, and netted 10 Premier League strikes last season. He has a contract that runs until 2033 and it is unclear if the west London club will be able to convince him to walk away from a deal that still has eight years left to run.

Numerous dominoes need to fall if Newcastle are to fund their move for Jackson, not least the Chelsea striker being willing to move. Given that they have been repeatedly snubbed this summer, the Magpies will likely tread carefully.

Joe Root 67 gives Yorkshire edge on 17-wicket day

Seventeen wickets fell on the first day at Hove as second division leaders Sussex hit back after they were bowled out for 150 by Yorkshire in the Vitality County Championship.Joe Root showed his class with 67 but no one else made more than Sussex’s top scorer James Coles (38). Yorkshire were 176 for 7 at stumps and how much they can add to their lead of 26 will be crucial to their efforts of securing a first victory of the season.Root enjoyed an absorbing battle with England team-mate Ollie Robinson, who bowled two quality spells and was unlucky not to pick up more than one wicket.Root shared stands of 42 for the fifth wicket with James Wharton and 58 for the sixth wicket with Jonathan Tattersall, as he passed 50 for the fourth time in seven Championship innings which have now brought him 432 runs in his preparations for the international summer. But having moved to 67 off 88 balls a misjudgement saw him struck on the back leg by Tom Haines working into the on side. For the other batters it was hard work. On a well-grassed pitch the ball moved lavishly off the seam at times, but there were some loose shots too and 12 of the wickets fell to slip catches.Sussex weren’t surprised to be put in, but Haines and Tom Clark serenely added 42 in 6.5 overs. It proved a false dawn, though, and apart from a fifth-wicket stand of 30 between Cheteshwar Pujara and Coles, Yorkshire’s disciplined all-seam attack held sway.George Hill led the way with 4 for 22 including two in five balls in his opening spell as Haines was taken at second slip and Alsop at third playing at deliveries which nipped off the seam. He returned after lunch to pick up Danny Lamb with his first ball back and then removed Jack Carson in the same over.Hill got good support, notably from Ben Coad (3 for 47). Coad had angled one in which seamed away to make the breakthrough when he removed Clark. Sussex skipper John Simpson made his fourth successive single-figure score before he was lbw shuffling forward and Tattersall dived in front of slip to remove Fynn Hudson-Prentice.Arguably the crucial wicket was claimed by the highly-regarded Dom Leech with the ninth ball of his first appearance of the season when Pujara was superbly caught by Tattersall, again diving in front of first slip. Coles then watched as four wickets fell for 18 runs in 8.1 overs before he was last out, holing out to mid-on.Sussex had been dismissed in 44.1 overs but their bowlers soon hit back. Robinson beat the bat on numerous occasions with the new ball, but it was left-armer Sean Hunt who made the breakthrough with his fifth delivery which Finlay Bean edged to second slip. Adam Lyth was taken at third slip before Robinson was rewarded in his sixth over with the crucial wicket of skipper Shan Masood, fencing to third slipHill played a loose drive at Hudson-Prentice to the last ball before tea but by then Root had begun to get the measure of the conditions. Wharton gave him good support until hitting across the line to a yorker-length ball which gave Hudson-Prentice his second wicket and Hunt returned to have Tattersall caught at third slip just before the close.

Handscomb hundred haunts hosts at HQ as Leicestershire recover

Former Middlesex captain puts on vital stands with Rehan Ahmed and Tom Scriven

Middlesex 64 for 1 trail Leicestershire 306 (Handscomb 109, Bamber 4-68) by 242 runs Peter Handscomb’s first century at Lord’s rescued Leicestershire from early trouble as their Vitality County Championship clash with hosts Middlesex finally got underway on day two.The Australian never passed 50 on home turf in two partial seasons at the home of cricket, but the former Seaxes skipper haunted them here with a stoic effort spread over 304 minutes and 188 balls as the visitors reached 306 having earlier stumbled to 83 for 4. Handscomb shared stands of 64 with Rehan Ahmed and 82 with Tom Scriven – the latter partnership for the ninth wicket.Middlesex, guilty of dropping both Handscomb on 48 and Rehan on 18, employed some bizarre fields over the course of the day, conceding a plethora of runs to a too often vacant third area. However, there were some inspired bowling changes with wickets falling in the first over of a bowler’s spell on three separate occasions. Ethan Bamber proved the pick of the Middlesex attack with 4 for 68.The hosts, left 18 overs to bat and closed 64 for 1, Mark Stoneman the wicket to fall.Another quirk of an interesting day meant Middlesex were onto their fourth ball before 36 overs were completed, the previous three having gone out of shape. After an opening day lost entirely to rain it came as little surprise, despite bright overhead conditions, that home skipper Toby Roland-Jones opted to bowl first on winning the toss, yet Leicestershire made a fast start with 27 coming off the first four overs. The first change of ball in only the fifth over brought a breakthrough when Bamber swung one into Rishi Patel which straightened off the pitch and crashed into his off stump.Marcus Harris, who’d already edged two through the slips in a skittish effort, soon followed, pinned lbw in Bamber’s next over and when Lewis Hill edged Ryan Higgins’ third ball to slip the Foxes were 50 for 3.Louis Kimber threatened briefly before lazily hooking Henry Brookes’ fourth ball of the day down the throat of deep square to leave Leicestershire in some trouble.Handscomb though had begun positively, despatching a Roland-Jones half-volley to the fence and with Rehan for company they reached lunch without further loss. The spinner was given a life soon after the resumption when Stephen Eskinazi dropped a regulation catch at slip – Bamber the luckless bowler. The reprieve seemed to liberate the all-rounder who twice lifted Bamber over mid-wicket for four before the seamer held a caught and bowled to finally get his man.A trio of Bens, Cox, Mike, and Green didn’t detain us for long and at 208 for 8 the hosts must have thought they were through. However, Handscomb, dropped on 48 by Roland-Jones – a tough return caught and bowled – found an ally in Scriven who played with enterprise to strike four boundaries. It meant Handscomb, who drove and deflected the ball well throughout the day, was only three short of a century and Leicestershire within 10 of a second batting bonus point when Scriven smeared a mishit to Max Holden at midwicket to fall four short of a sixth first-class 50.Handscomb though would reach his landmark with the help of nine fours and add one more boundary before being last out, giving Bamber a fourth victim.Stoneman fell early in Middlesex reply, bowled around his legs by Mike, but Sam Robson, playing for the first time since injuring his thumb in the opening game of the season against Glamorgan, and the in-form Holden batted through to stumps without undue alarm. Before play began, a poignant minute’s silence was observed in memory of Worcestershire spinner Josh Baker, who tragically passed away earlier this week, aged just 20.
