Hasaranga leads rout of Zimbabwe in decider

His 4 for 15 meant Sri Lanka just had 83 to chase

The first two matches had tense finishes. This one was a walkover. Zimbabwe had begun with promise, hitting 35 off their first three overs. But they crumbled rapidly to spin thereafter, losing four wickets to Wanindu Hasaranga, two to Maheesh Theekshana, and one to Dhananjaya de Silva, who was playing his first match of the series. They lost their last nine wickets for 49 runs, and though this was a slow deck given to turn, Sri Lanka had no problems. They sped to the target in 10.5 overs, for the loss of only one wicket, thereby sealing the series 2-1. They had also won the ODIs 2-0.Six wickets in 27 balls
Where Zimbabwe had shown some tenacity with the bat in their previous two matches, their middle and lower orders were especially meek in this match. In this 6 off 27 sequence, Tony Munyonga was first to go, mis-hitting a Hasaranga ball to the midwicket fielder who had just been installed, in the 10th over.Related

De Silva then had Sean Williams caught and bowled next over, before Hasaranga had the hero of the last match – Luke Jongwe – caught at deep square leg off a top-edged sweep. In his next over, Hasaranga struck twice, off his last two balls, both googlies. Wellington Masakadza was hit in front of the stumps. Richard Ngarava was bowled. Theekshana completed the team hat-trick in the first ball of the next over by having Clive Madande caught sweeping.Mendis and Nissanka smash the powerplay
Although Ngarava and Blessing Muzarabani have been excellent with the new ball through the tour, Sri Lanka were always going to try and break Zimbabwe’s spirits early, given the small chase. The openers hit three fours inside Ngarava’s first two overs, and then they really opened their shoulders. They hit one legside four each off Muzarabani’s second over – the fourth of the innings – before Mendis took Wellington Masakadza apart, and sent Ngarava for six off a fortuitous top edge off the sixth over. They were 50 for no loss after the first six.Mendis would lose his wicket to a terrific delivery from Williams, going for 33 off 27, but Sri Lanka were all but home.Zimbabwe’s fast startAlthough they batted only 14.1 overs, Zimbabwe had an excellent start. Sort of. Brian Bennett was the source of seven early boundaries – all fours, and almost all of them coming from drives of some description. This is partly because Sri Lanka’s fast bowlers pitched full, looking for swing. A nice off-cutter from Mathews ended that 12-ball innings though – Bennett’s eyes lighting up and looking for the big shot over the bowler’s head, but only managing to find mid-on.It was rapidly downhill for Zimbabwe after that.

There were a lot of players who stepped up in order to drag England across the line in their Euro 2025 quarter-final against Sweden on Thursday night. Be it Lucy Bronze, who kickstarted the comeback from 2-0 down with a brilliant header before thumping her penalty beyond Jennifer Falk to swing the momentum in the Lionesses' favour in the shootout. Michelle Agyemang's another, the nerveless teenager who pounced on a loose ball to draw the reigning European champions level with her first major tournament goal. Hannah Hampton more than played her part, too, as she saved two spot-kicks in the shootout after making a couple of big saves in the game itself.

But no one changed this game quite like Chloe Kelly. The Arsenal winger had been on the pitch mere seconds when she whipped in a wonderful cross to the back post that Bronze connected with, heading home the goal that narrowed the deficit to 2-1 with a little over 10 minutes remaining. Then, almost straight after the restart, Kelly was at it again, as another delivery caused chaos in the Sweden box and led to Agyemang bagging the equaliser.

Completing the set with a nerveless penalty, before which she even managed to flash a smile at opposing goalkeeper Falk, this was a massive, pressure-defying performance from Kelly – one which surely has Sarina Wiegman thinking about how to use her in Tuesday's semi-final clash with Italy.

  • Getty Images

    Total turnaround

It's incredible to think that, six months ago, it looked like Kelly wouldn't even be in the England squad for this tournament. The winger was completely out-of-favour at Manchester City, amid reports of a relationship breakdown with then-head coach Gareth Taylor, and Wiegman even admitted her lack of minutes was a "concern".

A January transfer felt absolutely imperative if Kelly was to turn her fortunes around on the international front – yet, even that seemed difficult to achieve. Manchester United were interested, but City were unwilling to sanction a loan to their bitter rivals. Indeed, with a matter of hours left of the window Kelly wrote on Instagram: "To be dictated whom I can and can’t join with only four months left of the football season is having a huge impact on not only my career but my mental well-being. The situation has dragged on for too long, it’s disappointing and not right. I am human and I have and will give everything to the game that I love. Ultimately, I just want to be happy again.”

    Finding form again

Fortunately, things changed dramatically when Arsenal came in with a last-minute loan offer. Kelly was heading back to the club she called her own between the ages of 12 and 20, and it was there that she completely turned her season around. After a frustrating start, which saw her second debut delayed due to Arsenal having two clashes with City and then a game in the cup, all of which she was ineligible for, the 27-year-old finally got back on the pitch in mid-February. From there, she just let loose.

Kelly started nine of Arsenal's final 14 games of the season, unavailable for two of the five she didn't, and registered two goals and five assists in that time, which was quite the contribution from someone who had barely played football that season before returning to north London. “I always said I really wanted to get my smile back and this has done just that for me," she said of the move. "I’m very grateful."

    Ticking all boxes

Things couldn't have gone better, really, on the club front, with Kelly helping the Gunners lift the Champions League trophy at the end of May before making a permanent switch to the north Londoners in the weeks that followed. But it was also monumental on an international level, helping the winger get right back into the England picture in time to make the cut for the Euros.

“You never take for granted playing for your country, so I knew that I needed to get minutes and work hard to be able to be in this position," Kelly said ahead of the tournament, with her absolutely grateful to be able to bounce back and return to the squad. But might she have her sights set on something more as Tuesday's semi-final approaches?

    Consistent super-sub

Despite her undeniable status as an England icon, secured thanks to her dramatic extra-time winner in the final of Euro 2022, Kelly has never really been a consistent starter for the Lionesses. Three years ago, she was the super sub, and that was a role she held again at the 2023 Women's World Cup, despite stating her case for a bigger role with some impactful involvements from the bench as England reached the final.

Now, at Euro 2025, the story is the same. Kelly might have been able to impressively assert herself on the Arsenal XI so quickly after rejoining the club earlier this year, but she remains a 'finisher', as Wiegman likes to call them, with England.

O'Neill bags five as Victoria close in on victory

Victorian paceman Fergus O’Neill has snared 5 for 47 to put the home side in the box seat for victory in their Sheffield Shield clash with South Australia. The Redbacks were bowled out for 271 in their second innings at Junction Oval on Monday, setting Victoria a victory target of 157. Victoria went to stumps on day three at 49 for 2, with the home side needing another 108 runs to secure the win.Nic Maddinson, who scored 104 in Victoria’s first-innings total of 288, is unbeaten on 21, while the home side’s second nightwatcher Xavier Crone also made it to stumps.Victorian opener Marcus Harris only made four before being bowled by Nathan McAndrew for the second time in the match. Nightwatcher Todd Murphy (18) was then trapped lbw by McAndrew in the final over of the day.The opening session on Monday was washed out by rain. When play resumed after lunch with South Australia 66 for 2 in their second innings, Victorian paceman Scott Boland was able to take his place on the field after passing a fitness test on his sore knee.O’Neill, who dismissed Jake Carder late on day two, then claimed another four wickets on Monday to put the brakes on South Australia’s second innings. The 23-year-old snared the key scalps of Henry Hunt (54), McAndrew (43) and Harry Nielsen (67), before finishing off his fine haul with the wicket of Ben Manenti (19). It was his third five-wicket haul of his short Shield career, with all coming against South Australia this season.Murphy took 3 for 54 and Boland chipped in with 2 for 35 from 16 overs in a strong bowling display from Victoria.McAndrew received a life on 34 when Crone dropped a tough caught-and-bowled chance.Hunt was bowled a short time later when O’Neill got one to jag back sharply. Every time the Redbacks steadied the ship, O’Neill was on hand to snare a vital wicket, and Victoria will fancy their chances of winning on Tuesday, despite the tricky nature of the pitch.

Bhatia, Sciver-Brunt and Kerr seal clinical chase for Mumbai

Despite an unbeaten 44 from Ellyse Perry, RCB could only muster 131 for 6

Mumbai Indians continued their rich vein of form in WPL 2024, running Royal Challengers Bangalore ragged with both bat and ball to seal a seven-wicket win. This despite missing a couple of their frontline players – Harmanpreet Kaur and Shabnim Ismail.Ismail’s replacement, Issy Wong, set the tone with the new ball, key India allrounder Pooja Vastrakar left her imprints in the middle phase with the ball, Saika Ishaque was back among the wickets after a quiet start to the competition, all while stand-in captain Nat Sciver-Brunt left her stamp on the field, with the ball and later with the bat. All these meant that RCB were kept to a mere 131 – despite an unbeaten 38-ball 44 from Ellyse Perry who returned to the XI – a total which Mumbai overhauled with little fuss.In doing so, Mumbai not just went to the top of the points table, but also maintained a clean slate in run-chases in the competition.Related

Perry good and the not-so goodTeams batting first have had a tough time in WPL 2024. Even so, RCB are one of the two teams to have a win while defending a score. But on Saturday, they couldn’t get a strong start and lost Smriti Mandhana and S Meghana inside five overs. Which brought Perry, who was ill for the past few days, to the crease. On a brownish surface, where run-scoring was not the easiest, she took time to get going, scoring only three off her first nine balls.A shortish ball from legspinner SB Keerthana in the tenth over allowed her to score her first boundary – a pull through square leg. In fact, all of her five fours came off deliveries that were on a length or short. That the illness had sapped her energy was becoming evident as the innings progressed. Mumbai’s stand-in captain Sciver-Brunt rotated her bowlers such that no bowler bowled back-to-back overs. And they also rarely erred in lines and lengths, which handicapped Perry.Only Georgia Wareham offered a bit of support to Perry – the duo were involved in a 52-run sixth-wicket partnership – which allowed RCB to get to a respectable score. Apart from them, only Meghana and Sophie Molineux entered double digits and RCB finished their innings without a single six.Bhatia, Matthews swift in chaseYastika Bhatia and Hayley Matthews began in a manner that would dispel any doubts over the tricky nature of the 132-run chase. They are one of the most prolific pairs in terms of partnership runs in the WPL – 431 runs with four fifty-plus stands – and started off in dominating fashion. Bhatia punched the first ball she faced down the ground, Matthews played a short-arm jab through midwicket off her first – both off Renuka Singh’s opening over. The left-arm spin of Molineux was greeted with a six and a four by Bhatia as Mumbai began their hunt in the fourth gear.Renuka went the distance in her second over too, the third of the innings. Matthews capitalised on an overpitched one and then on the width for two fours. Bhatia played one of the most gorgeous pick-up shots over midwicket for a six in between.Sophie Devine was called upon with Mumbai 37 for 0 in three and she struck on her fifth ball. Bhatia hit successive fours before getting a thick outside edge that was snaffled by a diving Richa Ghosh to her left. Matthews then greeted Wareham’s legspin with a six but soon fell to Shreyanka Patil for a 21-ball 26. Mumbai had already reduced 69 from their target by then.Issy Wong struck early to remove in-form Smriti Mandhana•BCCI

Sciver-Brunt, Kerr apply finish touchesIn the absence of Harmanpreet, Kerr continued to bat at No. 4 and proved to be the perfect foil for Sciver-Brunt. She began with a couple of shots through the leg side off medium-pacer Simran Bahadur. The first was a pristinely-timed flick through midwicket while the other was a back-foot clip between deep square leg and deep midwicket. She also feasted of the spin of Patil and Asha Sobhana, even as Sciver-Brunt steadily accumulated the runs. Kerr and Sciver-Brunt added 49 off just 35 runs together for the third wicket.Despite not playing the fancy scoops and reverse sweeps, Kerr finished with a strike rate of 166.66, while staying unbeaten on 40 off 24, and saw Mumbai through.

Durham notch first Division One win since 2016

Durham are celebrating their first victory of the season after defeating Worcestershire by 185 runs with a day to spare in the Vitality County Championship encounter at Kidderminster.Worcestershire were set a demanding 458 target but any realistic hopes of victory were broken by Paul Coughlin’s initial three-wicket burst. Matthew Potts pressed home the advantage and, with half the side dismissed for 121 in only 28 overs, the contest was effectively decided despite late resistance from Nathan Smith and Matthew Waite.Durham were convincing winners of the battle of last season’s two promoted sides.Their attack of Ben Raine, Potts and Coughlin showed their quality throughout after a wash-out of the opening game versus Hampshire and playing on a batters paradise with a Kookaburra ball at Edgbaston. For Worcestershire, it was a wake-up call after playing some excellent cricket in the opening two games against Warwickshire and Nottinghamshire. Their attack did not bowl with the same sustained accuracy as their opponents and of the batters only Jake Libby and Smith in both innings and Waite in the second suggested permanence for any lengthy periods of time.Durham resumed on 319-5 and Ollie Robinson and Graham Clark plundered 78 off 13 overs to set up the declaration after 50 minutes play. Robinson followed his first innings half century by pulling and straight driving Adam Finch for successive fours to reach a 65 ball fifty.Clark reached the same milestone from 91 balls at which point captain Scott Borthwick declared to leave the home with an hour’s batting before lunch. The fourth wicket partnership was worth an unbroken 132 in 28.1 overs.Worcestershire openers Gareth Roderick and Libby began confidently but then two wickets fell in two balls in the final over before lunch. Roderick was bowled off the inside edge by Coughlin and then Worcestershire Club Captain, Brett D’Oliveira, clipped the next delivery straight to midwicket to complete a pair.Rob Jones showed positive intent from the start and struck spinner Callum Parkinson for a huge straight six. A straight drive for four by Worcestershire’s new signing off the same bowler brought up the 100 in 20.2 overs. He raced to 39 from 23 balls but then provided Coughlin with a third wicket when caught at backward point. Potts returned in place of Coughlin – after a spell of 6-3-14-3 – and immediately struck when Adam Hose pushed forward and was plumb lbw. The procession of wickets continued as Jason Holder (4) was bowled through the gate by Potts who then had Adam Hose lbw.Libby completed an 87-ball fifty but the next delivery ended his determined knock. He tried to pull out of a hook shot against Raine but only succeeded in lobbing up a gentle catch to midwicket.Worcestershire were then 135-6 but resistance came from Smith and Waite during a stand of 103 in 30 overs – a new record for the County’s seventh wicket against Durham. It surpassed the 101 by Ross Whiteley and Ben Cox at New Road five years ago.Smith reached 50 off 87 balls before pushing forward to Raine and being bowled and, after Josh Baker was caught behind cutting at spinner Callum Parkinson, Waite went to his fifty from 110 deliveries. Waite (62) was eventually strangled down the leg side to give Coughlin a fourth scalp and Parkinson accounted for Adam Finch to wrap up proceedings.

'I won the Champions League again!' – Xherdan Shaqiri aims dig at Pep Guardiola as ex-Liverpool star points to his success after falling out with Man City boss at Bayern Munich

Xherdan Shaqiri recalled his time at Bayern Munich and stated that he didn't regret leaving the club, aiming a sly little dig at Pep Guardiola.

Shaqiri opens up on Bayern departure Says he has no regrets about the decisionAimed a potential jibe at Guardiola Follow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

Shaqiri has reflected on his departure from Bayern Munich in 2015 with no regrets, pointing to his Champions League triumph with Liverpool as proof that he made the right move. The former Swiss international, who found it difficult to secure regular playing time under Guardiola in Bavaria, suggested that his later success in Europe justified his departure — a comment that also served as a subtle swipe at the Manchester City boss.

AdvertisementAFPTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Guardiola was appointed Bayern's head coach in the summer of 2013, one year after Shaqiri had joined the club. In his first season (2013-14) under the ex-Barcelona manager, Shaqiri struggled to remain fit and could only make 27 appearances in all competitions. However, in the following season, things turned from bad to worse for the Swiss winger, who remained an unused substitute in seven of the first 16 Bundesliga games. Lack of playing time prompted him to secure a winter transfer move to the Serie A at Inter. He then joined Stoke City six months later, before being snapped up by Liverpool in 2018, where he won the Champions League in his debut season.

WHAT XHERDAN SHAQIRI SAID

In an interview with , Shaqiri was asked, "You had a difficult time under Pep Guardiola and finally left the club in 2015. Was that the right decision?"

Shaqiri replied: "Yes, it was the right decision. I don't look back and regret any of my moves. I made every decision in my career with 100 per cent conviction, and I think it worked out very well for me. For example, after my time at Bayern, I won the Champions League again with Liverpool, so it didn't go too badly. I was able to benefit from every stage of my career and take something important with me."

After his brief stints at Lyon in Ligue 1 and Chicago Fire in the MLS, Shaqiri returned to his boyhood club Basel in 2024. He is tied to the club until 2027, and although he will turn 34 in October, he has no plans to slow down just yet.

"At Basel, we demonstrated last season how ambitious and hungry we are for titles. I feel the same way personally: I didn't come back here to end my career, but to be as successful as possible with my hometown club and to win every title we have a chance of," he said in the same interview. "And, of course, the big goal is to finally play in the Champions League again with Basel. I'm focused on that now – and that's why retiring isn't an issue yet."
