Man City 'much stronger' than Juventus as Igor Tudor promises to go easy on his players after crushing defeat in Club World Cup

Juventus coach Igor Tudor admits that Manchester City were simply far too strong for his team after losing 5-2 to Pep Guardiola's side.

Juventus suffered a heavy 5-2 defeat against City in their final Group G match at the Club World Cup. Despite having already secured qualification, the Bianconeri were outclassed by Pep Guardiola's side, with five different scorers – Jeremy Doku, Pierre Kalulu (own goal), Erling Haaland, Phil Foden and Savinho – inflicting the misery on the Italians. Teun Koopmeiners and Dusan Vlahovic found the net for Juve but they fell short.

City topped the group with three wins from three, while Juventus settled for second place with six points.

Tudor opted to rest several key players, and the decision exposed Juventus' lack of depth against City’s relentless press and possession dominance. The Premier League giants finished with 77 per cent possession and 11 shots on target to Juventus' two. Tudor's side will now play Real Madrid in the round of 16, but they are worried about fatigue and not being ready tactically.

Tudor said after the game that City were clearly better and promised not to overreact. He called the game a learning experience instead of a setback.

Asked for his thoughts on the game from his side's perspective, Tudor said to : "Bad, conceding five goals is never nice. Certain things also need to be said about their quality. We had qualified, we wanted to rest someone and they played too well. We suffered, we were unable to steal the ball and not well even when we had it. They pressed in a way that we were unable to get out. To do well we need to be complete, so it can be a different match. That's how it went.

"We paid for everything, we had to be perfect and they spend a lot when they want. They have much stronger players than ours, but without looking for excuses. It takes a lot of conditions put together to do better, but today they weren't there."

Blaze emerge victorious after the deluge to book RHF final spot

A bizarre day ended with early season pace-setters Blaze overturning a three-game losing streak at the perfect moment to defeat South East Stars and secure a place in the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy Final.Originally set 149 to win after they had bowled Stars out for 148 in 43.5 overs, persistent heavy rain throughout the day led to a revised target of 52 runs from 10 overs being confirmed half an hour before the cut-off for the fixture to constitute a match and to avoid the second protagonist of Sunday’s finale against Southern Vipers in Northampton being decided by a bowl out. At that time, Blaze were 15 for 1 from 3.2 overs, leaving them 37 runs to get off 40 balls.Stars’ Beckenham ground – chosen as host despite Blaze finishing second in the table because Trent Bridge is preparing to stage Saturday’s ODI between England and Ireland and the other two options, Derby and Leicester, are in the midst of home County Championship fixtures – was bathed in glorious autumnal sunshine when play began. But soon the heavy grey clouds that have so challenged the wisdom of playing cricket in England mid-September over the past week or so descended and interrupted play, albeit briefly. At least the Blaze fan decked out in orange and black – one among about 30 spectators at the ground in total – who launched into a heartfelt chorus of “Feeling Hot Hot Hot” when Marie Kelly pinned Aylish Cranstone lbw to reduce Stars to 77 for 7 in the 20th over seemed oblivious to the impending gloom, as were her team.Or perhaps they were acutely aware of the weather forecast, such was their initial hurry to get this match done with Kelly, Kirstie Gordon, Lucy Higham and Kathryn Bryce taking two wickets apiece to bowl their opponents out well inside their 50-over allocation, despite a plucky 33-run stand for the ninth wicket between Ryana MacDonald-Gay and Chloe Hill giving Stars’ innings some substance.Kira Chathli had fallen to the second ball of the match, bowled by Grace Ballinger, and Stars were 40 for 2 when Gordon bowled Bryony Smith, bringing Alice Capsey to the crease. But her stay was short-lived when Josie Groves struck with her third ball, Capsey dragging on to fall for just 5.Alice Davidson-Richards, called into England’s ODI squad which played Sri Lanka off the back of her century against Blaze at this very ground 11 days ago, dispatched Groves straight down the ground for six but soon had her middle stump uprooted by Gordon. Then Alexa Stonehouse picked out Kelly at deep midwicket off Higham and Stars were in deep trouble.Kelly took a sharp return catch, launching herself forward to her right in her follow-through, to remove the threat of Stars’ leading run-scorer Paige Scholfield cheaply and, sure enough, a heavy downpour arrived on the stroke of midday and play was suspended for about 15 minutes. It was only another quarter of an hour before Bethan Miles was adjudged lbw to Kathryn Bryce, leaving it to MacDonald-Gay, the 19-year-old No. 10, to top score for Stars with 26, including a lovely straight-driven four off Kathryn Bryce shortly before she was stumped by Sarah Bryce sashaying down the pitch to Higham in the 44th over. When Lizelle Lee was run out in the second over of the reply, her hesitation on being called through for a single by Kelly giving Davidson-Richards ample time to fire the ball in to wicketkeeper Chatli, Blaze’s prospects of a quick run chase took a hit and they were destroyed by a second wave of showers arriving at 2pm and persisting on and off even through baking sunshine at times. The irony of that as the absurd prospect of a bowl out to decide who would do battle for the season’s title loomed brought a huge sense of relief when the sun prevailed over yet another shower at around 5pm and the players began preparing like they were possessed, the match allowed to enter a tense final stanza, thanks in no small part to the groundstaff who worked tirelessly throughout the day.Stonehouse had Kelly caught behind with the third legitimate delivery after the re-start, much to the delight of the few Stars supporters who had hung around for three-and-a-half action-less hours. But Sarah Bryce and Georgie Boyce marshalled their pursuit at around a run a ball and when Bryce swung Davidson-Richards through the leg side for four, the pressure eased. She sealed victory with a six straight down the ground off Smith and eight balls to spare.Sarah Bryce admitted a bowl out “would’ve been a very strange way, I think, for the game to be decided”.”I guess you’ve got to get results somehow or decide who’s going through but it would be a strange way to finish,” she said. “It was a strange day really. Pleased with our bowling performance to put us in such a good position, then the rain hanging around for a bit longer than we would’ve liked and then putting a little bit of doubt in the thought of a bowl off was a little bit nerve wracking for us all but we were absolutely delighted that we were able to get out there and finish the game of cricket and obviously delighted to come away with the win.”Blaze won their first six completed matches of the tournament, including against Vipers, who switched that result by a massive 126 runs in their final group-stage game last week. Vipers also defeated Blaze in the final of the Charlotte Edwards Cup in June.”They’re a good team,” Bryce said. “We’ve got a rematch of the T20 final, but we’ve also beaten them in the 50-over, in the first group game, so we know that we’ve got that belief behind us. Just really excited to be back at a final where anything can happen and hopefully we can come away with the right result.”One thing that one of our players actually said that I think was really valuable was the fact that we were in the eliminator allowed us the opportunity to hopefully go into a final off the back of the win. That can be a really positive way to look at it. We’ve not had the best three games that we would’ve liked, but we know that we have it in the tank – we’ve shown that at the beginning of the season and I think hopefully we can take the momentum from this game into the final.”

Trott hopes Rashid & Co bring 'joy and happiness' to post-earthquake Afghanistan

The players have been “brilliant” in their response to the disaster back home, their coach says

Jonathan Trott is hoping that his Afghanistan players can “bring joy and happiness” to their supporters at home during the World Cup, after the earthquake that killed around 1,000 people in the west of the country and injured thousands more.Afghanistan wore black armbands in memory of the victims of the earthquake during their eight-wicket defeat to India in Delhi on Wednesday night, and several players have donated significantly to relief efforts. None of the players’ families have been directly affected, but Trott said that they have been “brilliant” in their response to the disaster.”When the news broke of the disaster, straightaway the players wanted to know what they could do,” Trott said on Saturday evening, the eve of their next World Cup fixture, against England. “We had a team meeting and a lot of players have donated from their match fees.”Related

In the heart of Delhi, Afghan spirits soar in anticipation of World Cup showdown

Rashid Khan, Afghanistan’s T20 captain, has pledged to donate all his match fees from the World Cup “to help the affected people” and his foundation has raised over £30,000 in an emergency appeal.”Hopefully, all the money gets to places that can help and make a difference rescuing people or with their recovery,” Trott said. “The players have been really good. No-one as such has been affected family-wise, but I’m sure their thoughts go out to their countrymen and women.”After their defeat to India, Trott said: “The players certainly know that their performances here will bring joy and happiness to the country. They want their country to be proud of them… there’s seven more games to go in this World Cup, and plenty of opportunities to put in good performances and make everyone in Afghanistan proud.”For the second time in his coaching career, Trott will face the country he represented 52 times in Test cricket and 75 times in limited-overs internationals. “There’s no extra motivation,” he said. “It’s just another team that, hopefully, we can beat.”There is some sort of familiarity, and I find it a pleasure to play against England. Just like when I played for England against South Africa, I really enjoyed the challenge. So tomorrow is going to be a challenge, for sure – but nothing personal. There’s no sort of agendas, or anything like that.”Afghanistan were thrashed by England at the 2019 World Cup, losing by 150 runs as Eoin Morgan hit 148 off 71 balls. “I’d like to think [the gap] has tightened,” Trott said. “I’d say that England are probably in a very similar place to where they were then, and I’d say that we’ve got a bit better as well.”I’m very optimistic with tomorrow’s game. I’d like to see a good competitive match. I know the England side respects the players we have in our dressing room, and we respect them as well. We’ll have an opportunity tomorrow to put pressure on England and we’ve got to make sure we do that.”

Sandhu, Richardson unlikely heroes as Queensland ambush New South Wales

AAP09-Oct-2023Queensland pacemen Gurinder Sandhu and Kane Richardson combined for the largest tenth-wicket partnership in Marsh Cup history and hoisted the Bulls to a stunning one-wicket defeat of New South Wales. The home side posted only 217 at the usually batter-friendly North Sydney Oval on Monday but looked on track to defend the total courtesy of allrounder Jack Edwards and debutant Jack Nisbet.Sam Heazlett had been the pick of the Bulls’ batters on Monday but when he edged Chris Green to Edwards at point, the visitors looked out of the contest at 146 for 9.Sandhu and Richardson were Queensland’s last hopes, and while both are competent with the willow, neither could be said to be a true allrounder. But the Queensland quicks struck up a 73-run partnership that yielded 12 boundaries and eclipsed the competition’s previous best 10th-wicket stand of 61.Sandhu was particularly influential, hitting Nisbet for back-to-back fours in the 31st over, while Richardson smacked the debutant over long on for a rare six two overs later. When Sandhu hit the ball straight down the ground from Edwards’ bowling, the target required was into single figures.Richardson belted the ball over long off and into the O’Reilly Stand for a six that sealed a famous victory for Queensland in the 38th over.”Best shot of the day, best shot of the season, maybe,” Sandhu said. “I had full trust in Kane and he had full trust in me. We just worked together, chatting every over, just trying to get each other through for the next one, and the next one and the next one. I couldn’t have done it without him, no way.”Sandhu had been similarly influential with his bowling, swinging the ball with ease and reducing NSW to 4 for 2 inside three overs. He could have had a third early wicket but was denied an lbw appeal against Moises Henriques, who went on to steady the NSW innings in a 126-run partnership with opener Daniel Hughes.Henriques brought up his half-century by pulling Matt Renshaw over deep midwicket for one of his four sixes and went on to make a match-high 82.But Jack Wildermuth broke the partnership when he caught Hughes at fine leg from Liam Guthrie’s bowling in the 22nd over, sparking a NSW collapse of 8 for 87.

Under-the-radar Jadeja makes big impact once again

Only a day before this match, India’s coach Rahul Dravid gave a glowing endorsement of the role Ravindra Jadeja has played in the side. Jadeja had taken nine wickets at the time Dravid spoke about him. Getting more than one wicket per match is a good return but so good has the India attack been that even Dravid felt Jadeja’s contribution had gone unnoticed. Even when Jadeja’s performance was about to get noticed, against Bangladesh in Pune, a late dash from Virat Kohli to his century meant he was the Player of the Match.A day after Dravid’s comments, Jadeja became only the fifth bowler to take a five-for in this World Cup. You can’t not notice him now. However, as Dravid said, the metrics that matter inside the team are not just wickets.”If you look at the numbers, we look at stats, we look at data, we look at it quite a lot, he has been exceptional in this tournament,” Dravid said of Jadeja. “Because of how good our seamers have been and how fantastic it has been to watch them upfront, the performances of people like Jaddu and Kuldeep [Yadav] have probably gone slightly unnoticed.Related

“But I think his ability, and sometimes even having to bowl with a slightly wetter ball, because the ball has been slightly wet… Just the kind of control that he’s given us through the middle has been sensational. And just the areas he’s bowled as well, I think every metric point tells us that he’s up there with anyone in this tournament in terms of just the areas he’s been able to hit, the speeds he’s been able to bowl at.”There’s a lot of good conversations around the group in our bowlers’ meetings with him. And just to see him in that kind of relaxed space and very clear about what he wants to do and what he wants to achieve. And just having that confidence to do that consistently over and over again has been fantastic.”Then with the bat, again, not easy for someone like him because bats at seven, doesn’t play for three or four games, and then has to come in and again play quite an important innings every time. So that’s the tough thing for guys who bat at six and seven. When you’re batting in the top three, you know that every single game you’re going to get an opportunity to play. Sometimes at six and seven, you’re not really sure when you’re going to get a chance. Or even sometimes you won’t even get a hit like they haven’t for the first two or three games. The way we batted, he’s just come in and played critical knocks.Ravindra Jadeja spun a web around South Africa in Eden Gardens•Associated Press

“And then his fielding is incredible, to have someone like him at point and taking some of the catches that he has. So really great all-around package for us, and someone who’s really had a fantastic tournament [but] a little bit maybe gone under the radar.”No longer under the radar, Jadeja is pleased with his bowling rhythm and ability to chip in with the bat. He was asked what a luxury a player such as him would be if he was a captain.”I would be very happy [to have myself],” Jadeja said. “And you asked me to think like a captain? I have been thinking like the captain from the first match, it’s a different matter that I haven’t become one.”Once the laughter subsided, Jadeja said: “As an allrounder, my role is to make an impact in tough situations. When you need the crucial 30-40 runs. Or when there is a partnership going on and you need a wicket. Change the game. I always try to give an impactful performance, be there whenever the team needs me.”And fielding I never take for granted. I still feel I can drop a catch. I am always prepared on the field. I never relax. And that’s all: I keep trying to do my best. Sometimes I succeed, sometimes I don’t, but I keep trying all the time.”In a match where Jadeja said India were looking to challenge themselves, his performance under the lights will satisfy him even more. He said the pitch was much more difficult in the afternoon because not only did it have turn, its slow nature made shot-making extremely difficult, adding that it quickened up in the evening. “It was almost like challenging ourselves,” Jadeja said. “There could have been dew later in the night. If we get caught in such a situation in a knockout match, we should know how to handle it.”
