97th percentile for passing: West Ham step up pursuit of "incredible" star

West Ham United have now accelerated their plans to sign an “incredible” midfielder who could be well-suited to Graham Potter’s style of play.

Potter eyeing additions in multiple areas

In what is set to be Potter’s first summer transfer window as West Ham boss, the manager has set his sights on additions in a number of different areas, but it appears as though he is particularly keen on bringing in a new striker.

However, Potter has instructed the hierarchy to sign Lille striker Jonathan David, amid widespread interest in the Canadian, the Hammers may have to move on to other options, and they have now made contact over a deal for Fiorentina’s Moise Kean.

New defenders are also of interest to the Irons, and they are now in the race to sign Burnley’s Maxime Esteve, who has been a major part of the best defence in Europe this season, while they are also well-placed to sign Southampton full-back Kyle Walker-Peters.

In terms of central midfielders, Lille’s Angel Gomes has been a major target for quite some time, with Potter’s side pushing to sign the Englishman back in January, and there has now been a new update on their pursuit.

In an interview with Football Insider, scout Mick Brown has now revealed West Ham are accelerating their plans to sign Gomes, who is perfect for Potter’s style of play.

“The way Gomes plays, I think, suits the way Graham Potter wants to play and keep the ball.

“I think there are some concerns about how he’d perform in a combative game when things are against you.

England'sAngelGomesin action

“Their scouts have been watching him in France and they’ll know whether those concerns I spoke about are going to be an issue for them.

“If they decide it’s not a problem, they’ll be in the mix for him, I’m sure.”

"Incredible" Gomes starring in Ligue 1

The 24-year-old’s performances for Lille earned him a call-up for England earlier this season, and it is clear to see why, given that he has put in some impressive displays in France, particularly impressing with his long-range passing ability.

Passing is one of the best parts of the England international’s game, ranking extremely high on a number of key metrics over the past year, when compared to his positional peers.

Given Potter’s possession-based style of play, the former Manchester United man could be exactly what is needed in West Ham’s midfield, and it is promising news they are thought to be stepping up their pursuit.

Lucknow Super Giants pull off thrilling win after Pooran, Stoinis blitz and dramatic finish

Lucknow Super Giants turned it around in the final few overs as they registered the highest chase of the IPL this season

Celtic's star loanee is now worth even more than Engels & Jota after exit

Celtic have built a strong reputation for developing and selling young talent in recent years, with the most recent example being Matt O’Riley’s move to Brighton & Hove Albion last summer.

The Hoops sold him to the Premier League side for a record fee of more than £25m, after he had been signed from MK Dons for a fee of just £1.5m at the start of 2022.

Celtic’s board may, now, be looking at the current squad and wondering who the next star to be sold for huge money will be, as there are a number of very valuable assets in Brendan Rodgers’ team.

Celtic's most valuable players

The Hoops have invested plenty of money back into their squad in recent transfer windows to ensure that they have plenty of talented players with room to improve.

Celtic paid a reported club-record fee of £11m to sign Belgium international Arne Engels from Bundesliga side Augsburg last summer, and paid £8m to bring Jota back to Parkhead in the January transfer window.

As you can see in the table above, both of those players are among the most valuable stars in Celtic’s squad at this moment in time, with USA international Cameron Carter-Vickers currently sat as the most valuable asset at the club.

Arne Engels

The Scottish Premiership giants did, however, once have a star on loan who has now gone on to be worth more than every player in the current squad – Tim Weah.

Tim Weah's current market value

The Hoops had the American youngster on loan from Paris Saint-Germain in the second half of the 2018/19 campaign, at which point he was valued at €5m (£4.2m) by Transfermarkt.

Weah enjoyed a fairly decent spell at Parkhead, scoring four goals and providing one assist in 17 appearances in all competitions, and admitted towards the end of the season that staying at the club was a “possibility”.

In the end, though, Lille swooped to sign the winger for a reported fee of €10m (£8.4m) and he scored eight goals in 107 matches before his move to Juventus in the summer of 2023 for a reported fee of €10.3m (£8.6m).

Market Movers

Since his switch to Italy, the 25-year-old star’s market value has soared. At the time of writing (14/03/2025), Transfermarkt currently values Weah at a whopping €17m (£14.3m), which is more than the likes of Jota and Engels were bought for, and more than any other player in the Celtic squad.

Tim Weah

His value has soared by 240% from the £4.2m that he was valued at during his loan spell at Celtic, and they may regret that they did not push to land him permanently in the summer of 2019.

Weah, who has – interestingly – played as a right-back and right-winger – has scored six goals and provided five assists in 32 appearances for Juventus so far this season, which has led to his soaring value.

Not just Maeda: Celtic have hit the jackpot on star who's outscoring Kyogo

Celtic have struck gold with the star who has outscored Kyogo Furuhashi so far this season.

ByDan Emery Mar 11, 2025

The Hoops had a terrific talent on loan, who suggested that he was open to staying at Parkhead, but they failed to get a permanent deal over the line and he is now more valuable than any of the current squad. A lesson to be learned with future loanees, perhaps.

Josh Little missing Lord's Test 'the best thing' for Ireland – Andy Balbirnie

When Ireland walk out at Lord’s on Thursday to play only their seventh men’s Test match, they will do so without their best bowler. Josh Little is yet to make his Test debut but has thrived in one-day and T20 cricket, and would have been among the first names on Ireland’s teamsheet. But, to the frustration of many Ireland supporters, he is not available for selection.Little has spent most of the last two months in India, becoming the first active Ireland player to feature in the IPL. His contract with Gujarat Titans is worth INR 4.4 crore (€500,000 approx.) – around six times the value of his Ireland central contract – and he played in eight of their 14 group games, missing three to play an ODI series against Bangladesh. And while Ireland are determined to put up a good show at Lord’s, they have opted to give Little the week off in order to ensure he arrives at next month’s 50-over World Cup Qualifier in Zimbabwe – and July’s T20 World Cup Qualifier in Scotland – feeling fresh after a long winter playing franchise and international cricket around the world.Related

  • Stirling picked, Little rested for Lord's Test against England

“Josh asked us initially if he could have a period of rest ahead of the World Cup Qualifier,” explained Richard Holdsworth, Cricket Ireland’s performance director. “Our management team and the selectors discussed that issue in detail and were amicably in agreement that actually, that was in the best interests of Josh and the team.”We are incredibly proud to go and play against England and at Lord’s. It’s a special occasion,” Holdsworth said. “However, it’s not a pinnacle event. And where we have to put our energies and ensure we have the best team on the park is in our pinnacle events.”Going to a World Cup Qualifier where only 10 teams [two from the Qualifier] can qualify for that World Cup, that is still the biggest prize in the game as far as we’re concerned, and certainly as far as the world game is concerned.”Cricket Ireland’s decision has caused some disquiet. “I’d say there are people who are not happy with that,” Andy Balbirnie, Ireland’s captain, told ESPNcricinfo. “There’ll be a lot of people at Lord’s, and there won’t be a lot of people in Zimbabwe or Scotland [for the Qualifiers].”And Lord’s, for an Irish supporter, is fairytale stuff. People in Ireland, I think, got their love of cricket from listening to Test Match Special and watching cricket on Channel Four – like myself – in the nineties and early 2000s. It was always England Tests – and now we’re the team playing on TMS.”If you’re an Irish cricket fan, you’re like, ‘This is amazing, this is dreamland stuff.’ So naturally you’d be like, ‘Why aren’t we playing our best team when they’re not injured?’ But there’s a bigger picture: we understand that the Qualifiers are where we need to be at our best. There’s probably a few moans and groans about it but I think for us – and for Josh – it’s the best thing.”Little has already missed all three of Ireland’s Tests this year – one in Bangladesh, two in Sri Lanka – in order to fulfil his Titans commitments, but Balbirnie said that he had “no issue” with him missing international fixtures to play in the IPL if it had long-term benefits for Irish cricket.”Naturally, I would love to have him next week. I’m not saying I wouldn’t,” Balbirnie said. “But I have no issue with him playing in the IPL; if anything, I want him to be there. I want him on that stage because it’s good for Irish cricket, it’s good for our players.”In the space of a year, he’s gone from not really on the IPL radar to potentially being in the winning squad. It’s good for the people below him – the young players – because they can strive to be the next Josh Little. The knock-down effect it has is far more important than whether he plays the Test match at Lord’s.”Holdsworth added that, without any red-ball preparation behind him, Little might struggle to manage the physical demands of Test cricket: “The majority of the cricket he has been playing is T20 and bowling four overs is not good enough to prepare any cricketer to play Test cricket, where they could be bowling 20-plus overs a day and maybe for two innings.”We didn’t feel physically he was actually going to be ready for that having had no preparation for that Test match. His preparation was literally going to be coming out of the IPL and arriving a couple of days before the Test match.”Instead, Ireland will go into the Test with a depleted seam attack – with Barry McCarthy and Conor Olphert both unavailable through injury. They are preparing with a three-day, first-class warm-up match at Chelmsford, against an Essex side which features four of their own squad members.

Buttler and Boult trigger demolition of Sunrisers

Samson and Jaiswal scored fifties, and Chahal took a four-wicket haul, in Royals’ 72-run victory

Moody: Sunrisers looked ‘rusty’, were never in the contest

Rajasthan Royals dominated the first half of their batting innings, racing to 122 for 1 in ten overs. And then they owned the first half of their bowling innings too, reducing Sunrisers Hyderabad to 52 for 6 in 11 overs. The two periods of play proved decisive and led last season’s runners-up to a 72-run victory to kickstart their 2023 campaign. It was all Royals from the first over of the game. Their top three of Jos Buttler, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sanju Samson thumped half-centuries to give their team a record-breaking start: Royals posted their highest powerplay score (85) and also their fastest hundred in the IPL (in 7.4 overs). Even though their middle and lower order didn’t fire, the brutal hitting at the top ensured that the Royals posted the first 200-plus score of the season. The target of 204 was daunting against a strong Royals attack, and Trent Boult killed any hope of a successful chase by beginning with a double-wicket maiden. Yuzvendra Chahal then ran through the Sunrisers with a four-wicket haul. The margin of defeat was a blow to the Sunrisers’ net run rate, eerily similar to how their 2022 season began.Buttler begins like a bossJaiswal raced to 24 off 11 balls before Buttler raised his tempo even more, smacking Washington Sundar for successive sixes over midwicket and T Natarajan for four fours in five balls. Buttler then hit three fours in four balls off Afghanistan’s Fazalhaq Farooqi to bring up his fifty off 20 balls.By the time Buttler fell, Royals were 85 for 1 in 5.5 overs. Jaiswal then picked up the pace while Samson settled in; and Samson kept the momentum going when Jaiswal was dismissed for 54. He looked set for a huge score but was superbly caught by Abhishek Sharma on the edge of the long-on boundary for 55.Adil Rashid’s tidy spell in the middle overs, combined with improved second spells from Natarajan and Farooqi reduced the flow of runs. At one stage it seemed like Royals might fall just short of 200, but a late cameo from Shimron Hetmyer gave them 203.Jos Buttler slammed a fifty off 20 balls against Sunrisers Hyderabad•BCCI

Sunrisers sink fast in the chaseAfter Abhishek and Rahul Tripathi were out for ducks in Boult’s opening over, Harry Brook and Mayank Agarwal had the gargantuan task of repairing the innings while faced with a rising asking rate. It didn’t happen. Brook was bowled by Chahal googly, out for a 21-ball 13 in his maiden IPL innings.Jason Holder got Washington out cheaply with a short ball; Glenn Phillips hit R Ashwin straight to cover; and Chahal returned to cut short Agarwal’s innings. Chahal then had fellow legspinner Rashid stumped, and Bhuvneshwar playing all around a googly to have Sunrisers at 95 for 8. Abdul Samad’s unbeaten 32 helped them limp past 100, and they eventually finished with 131 for 8.Impact Players: Samad and SainiSunrisers’ Impact Player Samad had a better day out, compared to the Royals’ Impact Player Navdeep Saini. Samad walked in when Sunrisers were 48 for 5 as a replacement for Farooqi, and held one end up even as wickets kept falling. He reined in his shot-making instincts for the most part, looking to last till the end. He did that successfully, finishing on an unbeaten 32.Saini entered the game as Jaiswal’s replacement midway through the Sunrisers chase and had a tough outing. He bowled only three dots in his two-over spell, and conceded 34 at an economy of 17.

Chelsea now table blockbuster £66m bid to sign "electric" 11-goal star

With the wheels coming off of what was initially set to be a solid first season under Enzo Maresca, Chelsea have reportedly already tabled a blockbuster offer to sign a fresh attacking star this summer.

Chelsea transfer news

After splashing the cash once again last summer, it looked as though Todd Boehly’s tactic was finally set to pay off. At last, the American had thrown enough at the transfer market to make something stick by hiring Maresca and welcoming a horde of young talents.

Just months later, however, and the Blues are back outside of the top four and on course to miss out on Champions League qualification yet again despite getting back to winning ways over Southampton last time out.

So, naturally, the solution looks destined to come via the summer transfer window once more as Boehly aims to spend his way out of a hole surrounded by disappointing buys.

The American could be onto something with this one though, setting his sights on an attacking reinforcement who has been a standout for one of Europe’s top sides this season.

According to reports in Spain, Chelsea have tabled a blockbuster €80m (£66m) offer to sign Jamie Gittens from Borussia Dortmund this summer, but are reportedly set to fail with that bid with the German club demanding €100m (£83m) to sell their star winger.

That may not be the end of a growing transfer saga, however, with reports failing to rule out the chance that Chelsea decide to match Gittens’ hefty valuation and welcome him back to English football for the first time since leaving Manchester City in 2020.

Borussia Dortmund's Jamie Bynoe-Gittens in action

Whilst the Blues have already got more than enough wingers to choose from, there’s no denying that Gittens would be an instant upgrade in Maresca’s side over the likes of Pedro Neto and Jadon Sancho.

"Electic" Gittens would be an instant upgrade

Chelsea’s pursuit of a winger may well be a cautionary tale these days, but Gittens is among those likely to end their trend of transfer flops. The former Manchester City man has shown the goalscoring prowess that both Neto and Sancho have otherwise lacked, scoring 11 goals in all competitions and earning the praise of Ben Mattinson in doing so.

The analyst praised the Dortmund star’s “electric pace” and “killer” instinct at the beginning of the year in two traits that are likely to develop more and more in the coming years.

At just 20 years old, all signs are pointing towards the top of European football for Gittens’ career. Whether that includes a stop in the Premier League and at Stamford Bridge remains to be seen, however.
