'Nighthawk' cameo caps Rehan Ahmed's match-seizing day

As if it wasn’t already dipping into the realms of fantasy for an English legspinner to claim five wickets on Test debut at the age of 18, Rehan Ahmed proved to be the embodiment of a second mythical being in a single remarkable day in Karachi, following his appearance as England’s first true “Nighthawk” in the midst of their high-octane run-chase on the third evening. The Nighthawk is the subversion of Test cricket’s more typical nightwatcher role, but one with a more positive spin to suit the all-guns-blazing tempo of England’s new approach under Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes. The notion was first raised within England’s team tactics on the penultimate evening of their first Test victory over New Zealand at Lord’s back in June, when Stuart Broad revealed that, with 63 runs still required in the fourth innings and five wickets in hand, he had been padded up to pinch a few quick runs in the event of either Joe Root or Ben Foakes being dismissed in what turned out to be the matchwinning stand.Related

Thereafter, however, Broad’s role became shrouded in some mystery, one that he embellished by adding “Official NightHawk for @englandcricket” to his Instagram profile, and turning up to training in a “You Have To Call Me Nighthawk” T-shirt.But amid the success of England’s fourth-innings batting – an approach that included four consecutive 250-plus run-chases against New Zealand and India, and a further nine-wicket win against South Africa – Broad never got a chance to put his new approach into practice. And now, having missed the Pakistan tour following the birth of his first child, it seems the mantle has been passed to the youngest member of the squad. In the event, Rehan’s appearance at No. 3 in Karachi gleaned just 10 runs from eight balls, but those included a blazing straight drive for four from his first delivery. The sun may have been setting fast when he arrived at the crease but, in the wake of an opening stand of 87 in 11.3 overs between Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett, there was never any doubt as to why he had been promoted.Asked by Mike Atherton on Sky Sports what his orders had been, Rehan replied: “Try finish it tonight! [We could have done it] 100 percent. If we had faced another seven overs out there, it would have been quite easy.”His cameo ended with an agricultural hoick to leg, as Abrar Ahmed exacted some revenge for having been driven for another boundary one ball earlier. “Yeah, I should have played straight,” Rehan added. However, looking on from the Sky Sports studio, Broad was full of praise for the enterprise he had brought to the role.”The definition of the Nighthawk isn’t necessarily how many runs you put on the board, it’s the style,” Broad said. “Strike rate above 100. That’s a tick. Getting out to a hack, that’s a tick. So I’m very happy with his introduction to the Nighthawk position.”Broad added that he was sure Rehan’s instructions from McCullum would have been to go out and “try and hit your first ball for four.” However, the man himself later clarified: “No, he didn’t say anything. I said it to myself.”

Nevertheless, Broad explained that the unconventional approach to England’s run-chase was entirely in keeping with McCullum’s supremely relaxed attitude to the supposed tension of a Test-match situation.”What Baz is brilliant at is, he picks up on the momentum of days,” Broad added. “After five wickets, [Rehan’s] emotions would have been really high. ‘Go and have a bat, go and whack it’. There’s no point in just taking the boots off and sitting down, and letting the day come to an end. Go and try and win it for us today, it would have been great if it had come off, but Stokesy gave it a decent go as well.”And it was, ultimately, Rehan’s role with the ball that made his cameo with the bat possible, as he ripped out the heart of Pakistan’s second innings after waiting a full three hours for his introduction to the day’s play. He struck with a long-hop to dislodge Babar Azam and break a threatening fourth-wicket stand of 110, then produced two fine pieces of bowling to add Mohammad Rizwan and Saud Shakeel in the space of 17 balls. And, after Joe Root and Mark Wood had added two further breakthroughs after tea, Rehan returned to mop up Mohammad Wasim and Agha Ali Salman in the space of two more overs, before celebrating with a sajdah and leading the team from the field with the match ball.”From not bowling in the first session to five wickets is a dream come true,” he said. “I was enjoying it anyway, I was loving it out there, but it was nice to get the ball after three hours.”

£20k-p/w West Ham ace who’s missed last 5 games may now return vs Brentford

Hoping to get back to winning ways for the first time in three games, West Ham United could welcome the return of one summer arrival against Brentford this weekend.

West Ham injury news

Whilst Graham Potter has earned just one win in his first five games in charge, the former Chelsea boss has far from been helped on the injury front. Arriving to a side in desperate need of a striker amid the absence of both Michail Antonio and Niclas Fullkrug, Potter at least welcomed the arrival of Evan Ferguson, who could yet get his debut this weekend after arriving on deadline day.

The young striker isn’t the only one who could come into the side, either. Recent injury news suggests that Potter could be handed another boost against the Bees this weekend.

According to The Sun, as relayed by West Ham Zone, Jean-Clair Todibo has now returned to training and is closing in on a return for the Hammers after missing the last five games in all competitions.

West Ham hold talks with "underrated" forward's camp ahead of free transfer

Graham Potter’s side are sensing a bargain opportunity.

ByEmilio Galantini Feb 14, 2025

The central defender will be desperate to get off to a good start under Potter after never truly seeing eye-to-eye with former manager Julen Lopetegui. A fresh start should hand Todibo fresh hope of turning his early West Ham career around before earning a permanent move.

The London club could certainly do with their summer signing at his best if they want to revive their season. When firing on all cylinders, there’s no doubt that he should be a key man for the Hammers.

Todibo needed fresh start at West Ham

Starting just eight Premier League games under Lopetegui and reportedly falling out with the Spaniard, the longer that the manager’s reign went on the longer it seemed likely that Todibo’s West Ham tenure would be cut short. In the end, however, it was the defender who won the war as Lopetegui faced the sack.

Jean-Clair Todibo for West Ham

Now, under Potter, Todibo must take full advantage of a fresh start once he is back to full fitness. The defender should be chomping at the bit, having been forced to watch from the sidelines in all five of his new manager’s first games in charge.

West Brom must rue losing loan ace who’s now worth more than Maja & Fellows

Nearly 20 years on from his first promotion success at the Hawthorns, Tony Mowbray will be desperate to make it two on his West Bromwich Albion CV come the end of the long and gruelling campaign.

It will be a tough and intense battle to remain in the Championship playoff spots, but the cool head did guide Sunderland into the top six picture during the 2022/23 season, away from winning the league at the Baggies way back in 2008.

If a return to the top flight isn’t sealed, a number of key personnel could up and leave in major moves when the transfer window swings back open, with a whole host of transfer values in the West Midlands soaring.

Potential high profile West Brom sales

Although West Brom have had to deal with some upheaval this season in Carlos Corberan departing the club, it hasn’t really negatively impacted the performances of some of their top individuals.

Of course, Mowbray’s arrival onto the scene did come around the same time Josh Maja was confirmed to be out for the foreseeable, having fired home 12 electric Championship goals when completely free of his injury demons.

This would end up being one of Maja’s final goals in league action before an untimely spell on the treatment room, with the ex-Sunderland man even touted to be on the move at one stage during the winter window for a fee around the £15m mark.

There will be a temptation to cash in if promotion isn’t reached, especially if rumoured parties such as Chelsea come back in, with Premier League interest also heating up for the services of Tom Fellows down the right wing.

Tom Fellows celebrates for West Brom.

The homegrown prodigy has a stunning 11 assists in the league so far this season, with rumours circulating that Everton were keen during the most recent window as a £20m price tag is also now planted above his head.

Whilst both of these amounts wouldn’t be sniffed at by the promotion hopefuls, there is a certain ex-loanee worth even more than both the named £15m and £20m price tags, who is a scintillating watch at the peak of his powers in the top-flight.

The "special" loanee now worth more than Maja & Fellows

West Brom has been a great environment for loan stars to grow in recent years, with immediate names coming to mind including Romelu Lukaku, Conor Gallagher and Tosin Adarabioyo at the early stages of their development.

But, it could be slightly forgotten about now that Harvey Barnes called the Hawthorns his home temporarily during the 2018/19 campaign, which would result in Barnes finally getting more action at then parent side Leicester City.

Twisting and turning Championship defences for fun, as can be seen watching his gleaming highlights reel above, the Burnley-born winger would round off his time in the West Midlands with a sizeable nine goals and eight assists next to his name.

From that point on, the one-time England senior international would begin to make waves at Leicester, with his terrific form over a number of seasons at the King Power Stadium seeing him win a major £38m switch to Newcastle United.

Looking at the table above, there’s plenty on show to validate why the Magpies splashed out £38m, with football statistician Statman Dave even once heralding Barnes as “special” for his consistent excellence campaign by campaign.

He has had to battle with injury issues at St James’ Park limiting his game-time, but his transfer value still stands at the £28m mark, as per Transfermarkt.

Harvey Barnes

Therefore, whilst Maja and Fellows could win Mowbray big bucks, Barnes is worth far more than the duo, as West Brom aim to face off against their former loan star next season if promotion becomes a reality.

Scorchers blaze to the top with Bancroft and Hardie fifties

Heat lost wickets in clumps – twice – to put up a below-par total

AAP07-Jan-2023Cameron Bancroft and Aaron Hardie cracked quick-fire half-centuries to power Perth Scorchers to a seven-wicket win over Brisbane Heat at Optus Stadium. In reply to the Heat’s 9-171, the Scorchers reached the victory target with 21 balls to spare, courtesy of big knocks from Bancroft (76 not out off 48 balls) and Hardie (57 off 33 balls).Bancroft was playing just his third BBL clash of the season after being squeezed out of the side by Faf du Plessis and Adam Lyth for much of the campaign. But with du Plessis now having joined the SA20 and Lyth dropped following a horror run of form, Bancroft looms as a key player in the Scorchers’ bid to win back-to-back titles.Bancroft cracked seven fours and two sixes, combining with Hardie for a 111-run stand that set up the win. Hardie was brutal with five fours and three sixes before being run out in the 12th over. The result lifted the Scorchers back to the top, with the Heat seventh after posting just two wins from their first eight games.Josh Brown showed his big-hitting wares again•Getty ImagesHeat made a dream start to the match thanks to their departing import Colin Munro. Munro, who will link up with the ILT20 next week, blasted three fours and three sixes on the way to posting 45 off 26 balls. He combined with Josh Brown (34 off 21 balls) to lift the Heat to 81 for 0 by midway through the eighth over. But Scorchers’ attack hit back strongly, with Andrew Tye (3 for 37), Matt Kelly (2 for 28), and Lance Morris (2 for 40) sparking a collapse of 9-90. Heat only scored 25 from their final four overs, losing three wickets in the last over as their search for quick runs at the death fell flat.Morris was pummelled for 16 off his first over, but the speed demon bounced back with the scalps of Munro and Jimmy Peirson (23 off 19 balls). The return of Morris from Test squad duties helped offset the loss of Jhye Richardson, who is set to miss two to three weeks with a hamstring injury.

He’s better than Dalot: Man Utd must regret selling "monster" star for £15m

One of the biggest challenges Manchester United have faced this season has been adapting Ruben Amorim’s new back three system. Under Erik ten Hag, the Red Devils set up in a 4-2-3-1 formation, but since Amorim’s appointment, that has changed to a 3-4-2-1.

Perhaps the players who have had to adapt most are those out wide. Some wingers, including Amad and Alejanrdro Garnacho, have become number 10s, whilst Noussair Mazroui has shown versatility, playing at both centre-back and wing-back. Patrick Dorgu was signed as an out-and-out wing-back, to bolster Amorim’s options out wide too.

Another player who has been used only as a wing-back in the last few months is Diogo Dalot.

Diogo Dalot’s time under Amorim so far

Dalot was excellent for United in the 2023/24 campaign. He played 50 times, scoring three goals and grabbing five assists, playing a huge role in helping his side to FA Cup glory. Former Red Devils captain Gary Neville said he is “the right-back for the future” at Old Trafford.

However, things have not been as easy this term for the Portuguese. He has played 40 times under both managers but has just one goal and two assists. His role has vastly changed from playing as a right-back or left-back under Ten Hag. Now, Amorim has deployed him on the left and right flank as a wing-back.

His record for the new boss suggests he has perhaps taken longer to adapt. He has played 22 matches so far but is yet to register an assist, which might be concerning from one of United’s main widemen. He did get on the scoresheet against FCSB in the Europa League.

It has been a tough season for Dalot, who football analyst and host of The Overlap: The Breakdown H, brutally said has been “garbage for months” at the start of February. He is certainly one of the players who has needed to adapt the most to Amorim’s system.

Perhaps the new United boss wishes he had a former Red Devils star to call upon at wing-back…

Man United have sold a better player than Dalot

There was a lot of change at Old Trafford in the summer, with some significant player departures. Key members of Ten Hag’s squad left, including boyhood Red Scott McTominay who joined Napoli.

Another notable departure was Aaron Wan-Bissaka. The Englishman left Old Trafford after five seasons of donning the famous red shirt with the London-born defender making the move back to the capital, joining West Ham United for just £15m.

Since making the move to the London Stadium, Wan-Bissaka has impressed. Although renowned for his “monster” defensive ability, as football talent scout Jacek Kulig described him, he has grabbed two goals and two assists, more goal involvements than Dalot has managed this term.

His most recent goal involvement came away to Arsenal in the Hammers’ most recent Premier League outing. It was a sensational assist for his captain, Jarrod Bowen. In a one-vs-one situation against Riccardo Calafiori, the West Ham number 29 beat him with a few stepovers and whipped a lovely ball onto Bowen’s head.

Wan-Bissaka was a key player at Old Trafford for several years. The right-back, who also slotted in on the opposite side at times, played 190 times, scoring twice and registering 13 assists.

Looking back on it, perhaps the Red Devils wish they still had Wan Bissaka to call upon now. Although he is not a natural wing-back, his assist against Arsenal showed just how capable he is in the final third, and he is of course outperforming Dalot when it comes to goal involvement this season.

Aaron-Wan-Bissaka

Maybe Wan-Bissaka is a player that Amorim wishes he still had available to him as he continues to drag his side up the table.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Despite United’s struggles this season, Neville remains optimistic about the team’s ability to rise to the occasion. However, the former right-back also admitted that the sheer importance of the match fills him with anxiety.

  • WHAT NEVILLE SAID

Neville, speaking as a lifelong supporter and former player, described the prospect of the final as unsettling.

"It is a huge game. The consequences are massive. I have a sickly feeling in my stomach about this game as a United fan purely because of what is at stake," he said, per BBC Sport.

While fellow pundit and ex-captain Roy Keane called it an exciting fixture, Neville took a more cautious view.

"Roy Keane called it a great game the other day," he said. "That is what Roy would think. My mentality is different. I was a right-back. You know the only thing you can do is lose your team the game. Unless you are Trent Alexander-Arnold, you are unlikely to win your team a game as a right-back. But I am confident. Manchester United have an uncanny knack, even in difficult times and bad times – and this has been a really bad season – of picking up trophies."

Chelsea now in hot pursuit of £42m "big star" who's a key target for Arsenal

Chelsea are now in hot pursuit of an important Arsenal target, having recently stepped up their interest, according to a report.

Blues eyeing a right-back

Reece James has already matched the number of Premier League appearances he made last season, with his tenth outing coming in the 2-1 loss against Aston Villa at the end of February, but the 25-year-old has continued to struggle with injuries.

There have also been reports linking Malo Gusto with a move away from Stamford Bridge, which means a new right-back may be required in the summer, and potential targets have now been identified.

Talks have been held over a move for Flamengo right-back Wesley Franca, with the 21-year-old impressing in his native Brazil, but there have also been reports Enzo Maresca’s side could make a move for a player with more experience at the top level.

According to a report from Spain, Chelsea have now stepped up their interest in Inter Milan’s Denzel Dumfries, and they are now said to be in hot pursuit of the right-back, but there could be stiff competition for his signature.

Manchester United and Arsenal are also named as potential suitors for Dumfries, with the north Londoners viewing him as a key target to bolster their options at right-back, which is a position they are keen on strengthening as a priority.

"Big star" Dumfries impressing for club and country

The 28-year-old has chalked up 63 caps for the Netherlands, and he received high praise from Rafael van der Vaart just under a year ago, at which point he was on a remarkable run of assists.

Not only that, but the Inter star has also impressed in a defensive sense during his time with the Italian club, most notably across the two legs of the 2023 Champions League semi-final against AC Milan.

Chelsea are already relatively well-stocked at right-back, but James’ injury issues mean Maresca cannot depend upon the captain, so it could make sense to pursue a new option this summer, and Dumfries is proven at the highest level.

Cricket Scotland chair Anjan Luthra steps down from role

Cricket Scotland chair Anjan Luthra has announced his immediate resignation after just six months in the role, amid the ongoing fallout from last year’s damning report into racism in the Scottish game.Luthra tweeted a statement on Friday morning in which he expressed his disagreement with the way SportScotland – the body that oversaw his appointment as chair – was looking to run cricket, claiming it was bowing to “the demands of a lobby group and a handful of individuals associated with them – even if that means the wider sport and community will be negatively impacted”.Cricket Scotland was placed into special measures last year after the Changing the Boundaries report found 448 examples of institutional racism in the game.Luthra said in a six-month update earlier in March that progress had been made on diversity, only for his comments to be criticised by anti-racism organisation Running out Racism. According to the BBC, four members of Cricket Scotland’s equality and anti-racism working group subsequently resigned in protest.”Cricket Scotland can announce that Anjan Luthra has resigned as chair with immediate effect,” the board said in a statement. “The organisation thanks Anjan for his hard work and input during his time as chair.”The Changing the Boundaries report, carried out by Plan4Sport, was commissioned after revelations by former players Majid Haq and Qasim Sheikh, both of whom have been critical of the board’s recent efforts. As well as lacking a chair, Cricket Scotland is also currently without a chief executive, after it was announced that interim CEO Gordon Arthur would be stepping down for personal reasons at the end of April.
