Better than Dorgu: Man Utd must regret selling "monster" star for just £5m

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has endured a difficult start to life at Old Trafford since he replaced Erik ten Hag in the dugout back in November.

The Portuguese boss has lost eight, and only won four, of his 15 matches in charge of the club in the Premier League, whilst his latest result was the 2-2 draw with Everton at Goodison Park.

Amorim has not been given too much to work with, though, as the Red Devils only made one significant addition in the January transfer window last month.

Manchester United swooped to sign 20-year-old left wing-back Patrick Dorgu from Serie A side Lecce for a reported fee of £25m to bolster the manager’s wide options.

Patrick Dorgu's form for Lecce

The Denmark international, who has only played two Premier League matches for United so far, started 21 matches in the Italian top-flight during the first half of the season.

Dorgu provided a decent threat as an attacking force for Lecce with a return of three goals, one assist, and one ‘big chance’ created from a left-back position.

He also made 3.0 tackles and interceptions per game and won 53% of his duels in total, which shows that the young talent offered quality in and out of possession for the Serie A side.

The Danish whiz will now be hoping to translate his qualities on and off the ball to the Premier League in the second half of this season to help improve Amorim’s side’s form in the division.

Where Are They Now

Manchester United, however, may have already fumbled an even bigger left-back talent than Dorgu when they decided to cash in on Spanish defender Alvaro Carreras to Benfica last summer.

The 21-year-old defender joined the Red Devils from Real Madrid in 2020 and enjoyed loan spells with Preston, Granada, and Benfica, before his permanent exit last year.

Alvaro Carreras' form this season

Benfica reportedly paid a fee of just £5m to sign him permanently and it was claimed in January that Real Madrid were interested in the defender, whose price tag has now soared to more than £40m.

That, immediately, suggests that United must regret cashing in on him for a fee of £5m as his current club believes that he is worth more than six times as much less than a year later.

The former Manchester United youngster’s form in the Portuguese top-flight this season, when compared to Dorgu’s in Italy, also suggests that he is even better than the £25m-rated January addition.

As you can see in the table above, Carreras has been in fantastic form in the Liga Portugal for Benfica, winning the majority of his defensive duels whilst rarely being dribbled past by opposition players.

He could have been an even better option for Amorim, given his defensive superiority and similar levels of creativity, if Erik ten Hag had not already sold him last year.

Ruben Amorim is stepping up his pursuit of firepower at Manchester United.

BySean Markus Clifford Feb 23, 2025

Jacek Kulig described him as a “monster in the making” earlier this season, and he is a ‘monster’ United have missed out on, selling him on the cheap only to go on to pay £25m for a player who does not appear to be an upgrade on the Spaniard.

The Red Devils must, therefore, regret cashing in on him and Amorim must be frustrated that he did not get the chance to work with him, given his form this season.

Ex-West Ham chief says the club are now worried about £95k-per-week star

West Ham United chiefs are growing concerned over one player’s form behind-the-scenes, which has even prompted manager Graham Potter and co to make summer transfer plans.

West Ham set for extended break after FA Cup defeat

Potter’s side won’t be in action this weekend after Aston Villa knocked them out of the FA Cup third round, meaning the Hammers are currently enjoying a break before their next Premier League clash at home to Brentford next weekend.

They were arguably unlucky not to come away from Stamford Bridge with at least a point against Chelsea, and they even took a lead in the first-half courtesy of captain Jarrod Bowen.

West Ham also strengthened in January by recalling midfielder James Ward-Prowse and signing striker Evan Ferguson on a temporary deal from Brighton. This time off will allow Ferguson in particular to settle into his surroundings, with Potter thrilled by both men’s arrivals in east London.

“I’m happy,” said Potter on Ferguson and Ward-Prowse.

“The players that we’ve got out at the moment are significant for us. When we get them back — which we will, hopefully, soon — that makes a difference to us. To get the two characters that we did, Evan and James, I think they will help the team improve training every day.

West Ham midfielder James Ward-Prowse

“I think he’s [Ferguson] had a few weeks off and then played 20 minutes or so at the weekend. We’ve got some time now until the next game, so we’ll help him in training.

“That’s our challenge now: to make sure that he’s fit, that he’s helpful, and that he’s enjoying his football, because he’s a talent.”

West Ham's transfer plan amid worries over Emerson Palmieri

However, it is not all plane sailing at Rush Green right now, with £95,000-per-week left-back Emerson Palmieri attracting internal criticism.

According to former senior Irons scout Mick Brown, speaking to Football Insider, West Ham are worried over Emerson’s form, so much so that they’re planning to sign a new left-back in the summer.

They’ve brought in Wan-Bissaka who has done exceptionally well for them,” he told Football Insider.

“So their priority is on the other side, at left-back. I know they’re not 100% sold on Emerson, there have been concerns about his performances. Because of that, Wan-Bissaka has sometimes been forced to move over and play at left-back.

“They’re looking to bring in a new left-back to solve that problem. In terms of targets, I’m not sure, but I know it’s a position they’ve been looking at since before January, even though their focus was elsewhere in the window.

“I’d expect that to be a position they look to address in the summer.”

Chelsea leading race to sign "superb" £37m star keen on Premier League move

Shifting their focus towards the summer transfer window, Chelsea are now reportedly in pole position to sign a Bundesliga talent worth £37m as they look to reinforce Enzo Maresca’s frontline once again.

Chelsea transfer news

The wheels are threatening to fall off of Chelsea’s season, which initially saw them get off to an excellent start under new manager Maresca. Defeat over Southampton was not enough to get their place back in the top four and as Manchester City look to avoid a nightmare of their own in a campaign to forget, the Blues could face an uphill battle.

Failure to qualify for the Champions League doesn’t look set to change Todd Boehly’s spending habits, however, with the transfer rumours already coming thick and fast at Stamford Bridge.

The likes of Dean Huijsen have been among those linked with a move to the London giants in recent days and it must be said that the defender would be making a deserved move. Following an excellent debut season at Bournemouth, the centre-back looks destined for great things with or without Chelsea this summer.

Bournemouth defender Dean Huijsen

He’s not the only one on the Blues’ radar though. According to Caught Offside, Chelsea are now leading the race to sign Karim Adeyemi from Borussia Dortmund this summer.

Not satisfied with the arrivals of Jadon Sancho and Pedro Neto last summer, the Blues are seemingly in the market for another winger to add to a list of attacking options already filled to the brim with recent arrivals.

Agents drive Chelsea transfer for attacker as BlueCo ready imminent talks

The west Londoners are poised for “face-to-face” discussions.

Like Neto and others, Adeyemi wouldn’t come cheap. The Dortmund star has reportedly been valued at as much as €45m (£37m) by the German club as he sets his sights on the Premier League. Alas, money is rarely an obstacle for Chelsea, which could see them add yet another winger to Maresca’s side this summer.

Adeyemi would face same struggles as Neto and Sancho

If Chelsea are to sign another winger, then they simply cannot pursue mediocrity yet again. Whoever arrives must have a Cole Palmer-like impact and represent an instant upgrade on the likes of Neto and Sancho. Adeyemi, as harsh as it is, simply does not tick that box. In fact, the stats suggest that the 23-year-old would only face similar struggles to those before him in West London.

Adeyemi’s struggles in front of goal come as quite the shock given how he looked likely to kick on at the beginning of the campaign, earning praise from Jacek Kulig for a “superb” week on U21 international duty in November.

Since then though, the German has only edged closer to the exit door at Dortmund and has failed to become the threat that they’ve so desperately needed at times. With just nine Bundesliga starts to his name too, it’s becoming clear that he should move on this summer.

Wilder may have found Sheffield United’s next Osula in "great" teenage star

Whilst Chris Wilder does love to use a lot of experienced heads, seen in the likes of 32-year-old Kieffer Moore in attack and 31-year-old Jack Robinson in the heart of defence, Sheffield United this season have also gained lots of joy from their pool of youngsters.

Before his campaign was derailed by injury, academy product Ollie Arblaster was definitely enjoying his football in the senior ranks with two goals and an assist next to his name from 12 Championship matches, with Wilder then handing over some of the midfield responsibilities to fellow homegrown gem Sydie Peck.

SheffieldUnitedmanagerChris Wilder reacts after the match

Unfortunately, as is the nature of the beast, the promotion-chasing Blades haven’t always been able to keep a firm grip on the cream of the crop that comes from their academy, with a former starlet now making waves for his Premier League employers away from South Yorkshire.

William Osula's rise at Newcastle United

It would have come as a shock to some when William Osula left Sheffield behind in the summer of 2024 for Newcastle United, considering the Scandinavian striker had only scored three times for the Blades from 30 appearances.

The price tag would have equally raised eyebrows, with the Magpies forking out £15m to win the 6 foot 4 ace’s services barely four seasons into his development at Bramall Lane.

William Osula

But, Eddie Howe’s side might well feel justified now in splashing the cash for the 21-year-old when you take a glance at the Dane’s performance against Birmingham City last time out in the FA Cup.

Osula was a constant livewire against the League One leader, with two assists coming his way by the full-time whistle to help his Premier League side overcome the tricky Blues in a barnstorming 3-2 win.

Whilst there will be a slight bad taste in United’s mouth that Osula never blossomed into a top performer at his boyhood club, they could well have their next version of the Magpies star in this promising attacker who is being eyed up by some Premier League admirers already.

Sheffield United's next Osula

It will be very hard for this up-and-coming starlet to gain minutes for the rest of the season you imagine, considering Wilder will obviously be looking to use both Tom Cannon and Ben Brereton Diaz as much as possible as two flashy new purchases up top.

But, it isn’t completely outside the realms of possibility that 18-year-old Ryan One will also be utilised as another option in attack, having already made quite an impression in the senior game for his side this season.

After lighting up many a youth pitch for the Blades with his blistering pace and expert finishing since his move from Scotland in 2023, One has been chucked into the deep end of the first team many a time this campaign so far with his first-ever goal for Wilder’s men coming against Bristol City back in November.

In total, the promising teenager now has ten league games under his belt across 2024/25, with Wilder even going as far as to gift the United number 39 two starts and to label him as a “great” prospect for how well he’s adjusted to the tough environment of the Championship.

Whilst there are five other faces in the well-stocked striker department away from One, both Tyrese Campbell and Moore are prone to picking up injuries, whilst the likes of Tom Cannon have a lot of pressure on their shoulders to live up to their Stoke City best with 11 goals tallied up for the Potters.

Therefore, the teenager could end up being a worthwhile utility body for Wilder to call upon, with interest in his services already reportedly emerging from Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur and Ipswich Town.

Chris Wilder

His manager will just hope he doesn’t walk away to a higher-up suitor soon, with United gaining their next Osula that then sticks around.

Better than Odegaard: Arsenal must rue selling Ballon d’Or nominee for £21m

Of all the problems that have encapsulated Arsenal’s struggles this season, Martin Odegaard’s form, or lack thereof, has felt the most significant.

For the few campaigns prior to this one, the Norwegian maestro was comfortably one of the Gunners’ most essential starters, as evidenced by his second successive Player of the Year Award last season.

However, whether it be down to his ankle sprain, fatigue or a drop in confidence, the former Real Madrid wonderkid has simply not been up to scratch this season.

Worse still, the 26-year-old is being outperformed by a player sold by Arteta a few windows ago, and some might even say he’s not performing well enough to wear the captain’s armband.

Arsenal's recent captains

Before Odegaard was named captain in the summer of 2022, at just 23 years old, Arsenal’s leader on the pitch was Alexandre Lacazette.

The French striker only had the armband for the latter half of the 21/22 season, getting it on a stand-in basis in December 2021 and then permanently in February 2022 before he left the club at the expiration of his contract that summer.

While the former Lyon star led the line well enough during his short stint as captain, he ultimately failed to lead the team to any glory or into the Champions League places, ultimately finishing just outside in fifth place.

In contrast, while Pierre Emerick Aubameyang’s time in charge ended in disgrace, he did have the armband the last time the North Londoners lifted the FA Cup in July 2020, scoring goals against Manchester City in the semi-final and Chelsea in the final.

Moreover, for the first half of his stint leading the team, the Gabonese superstar was arguably the most important member of the squad, as his incredible goalscoring record was the only thing keeping them from sliding even further down the table.

However, while the unreal marksman lost the armband in acrimonious circumstances, it was nowhere near as bad as Granit Xhaka’s loss of the captaincy.

The Swiss international was given the role by former manager Unai Emery in September 2019 but lost it just two months later when he swore at the Emirates faithful and threw both the armband and shirt to the crowd while being booed as he was substituted against Crystal Palace.

The tenacious midfielder eventually won the supporters back onside but left the club to join Bayer Leverkusen in 2023 for just £21m, where he won the Bundesliga last season and is outperforming Odegaard in a key area this year.

How Xhaka is outperforming Odegaard in 2024/25

So, the first thing to say is that, as Odegaard generally plays in a more advanced position than Xhaka, the fact he’s outperforming him for goals and assists should not come as a surprise.

That said, the fact that his tally of three goals and six assists is only marginally better than the Swiss star’s haul of two goals and six assists is perhaps an indication of just how much he has underperformed this year.

However, raw output is not the area in which the former Arsenal ace is outperforming the current captain.

Instead, it is something just as important: their passing. More specifically, their progressive passes and their passes into the final third.

For example, according to FBref, the “dangerous” Leverkusen star, as dubbed by Ian Wright, is averaging 10.5 progressive passes per 90 this term.

Where Are They Now

Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast’s Where Are They Now series.

That just so happens to be the second-highest across Europe’s top five leagues, and significantly more than the Gunners’ number eight, who is averaging 10.2, despite playing higher up the pitch.

Likewise, the North Londoners’ former captain, who was nominated for the Ballon d’Or, also ranks second in the top five leagues for passes into the final third, at 11.7, while his distant successor has only been able to produce 5.34 on average per 90.

Ultimately, Odegaard is an undeniably talented footballer and someone who could still lead Arsenal to glory at some point, but this season, he has been incredibly underwhelming, and the fact that a 32-year-old Xhaka is outperforming him suggests as much.
