Everton receive reply after tabling loan offer for "wonderful" 24 y/o

Everton have reportedly received a reply from a club after tabling a loan offer for their “wonderful” player, with the Blues looking to sign him during the January transfer window.

Everton transfer news

Sean Dyche’s side continue to limp along this season, producing a string of forgettable performances and getting themselves dragged into another Premier League relegation battle at the bottom of the table.

Reinforcements this month would certainly help Everton pull clear of dangers, with additions needed in various areas of the pitch, as Jaden Philogene looks like he could arrive at Goodison Park. The Blues are in “talks” over a move for the Aston Villa 22-year-old.

Jaden Philogene for Aston Villa.

A new striker and left-back have been mooted in some quarters, with both seen as key positions to strengthen, with former Chelsea winger Hakim Ziyech one player who has been linked with boosting the Blues’ options out wide. He is currently at Galatasaray, but is keen on securing a move away.

Brighton striker Evan Ferguson is also seen as a target for the Blues, as Everton look at possible long-term replacements for Dominic Calvert-Lewin leading the line. Still only 20, there is so much more to come from him in the coming years, and he could grow into a massive player for the Blues.

Everton make loan offer for "wonderful" ace

According to a new update from Fanatik, Everton made a loan offer for the signing of Galatasaray attacker Yunus Akgun, as they look to snap him up in the current transfer window, but his club want to wait until the end of the season to make a decision. Everton’s offer including a permanent move at the end of the loan, but it seems they will have better luck with a straight up permanent offer come the summer.

This is a blow for Everton, should Galatasaray’s stance not change, with Akgun a player who could have made a real impact during the second half of the season and beyond. Football talent scout Jacek Kulig has lauded the winger as a “wonderful” player, while journalist Yakup Cinar also heaped praise on him back in 2022.

Hopefully, things change regarding the situation, allowing Everton to get their man this month, but if not, they should look to bring him in at the end of the current campaign, giving them an injection of attacking quality in the process.

Brunt continues to marvel as her end-game looms

The fast bowler knows her career does not have long to go, but there remains a big prize to focus on

Valkerie Baynes05-Aug-2022Katherine Brunt has a lot to think about at the moment. You wouldn’t necessarily know it watching her rip opposing players’ poles from the ground in true, vintage Brunt fashion. But with the spectre of retirement looming larger as England draw closer to their goal of winning a Commonwealth Games medal on home soil, this isn’t exactly the Brunt of old.Brunt hasn’t set a date for her retirement, publicly at least. But, having declared that she had played her last Test during the Ashes in January, she recently told ESPNcricinfo that, whether she calls time on her international career after the Commonwealth Games or presses on to next year’s T20 World Cup, the end would be “very soon”.”Everybody has ebbs and flows,” Brunt said, touching briefly again on the difficulties she faced while struggling with her action during England’s tour of Australia and then New Zealand for the ODI World Cup.Related

History beckons as India look for 'killing attitude' in their quest for gold

Brunt: 'I've considered retirement constantly' over 'most challenging year of my career'

Brunt, Wong set tone as England brush past New Zealand

“I’ve had a lot of questions for myself and I’ve worked exceptionally hard in the last three months before this tournament. So it is funny because I’m feeling good, playing well, and it’s hard to walk away from stuff like that. So yeah, a lot going on in my head right now.”She was speaking after claiming two wickets for just two runs in her first two overs to pound New Zealand into submission as they posted just 71 for 9 from 20 overs during their final group game. England won by seven wickets with 50 balls to spare to secure top spot in Group B and avoid favourites Australia in the semi-finals. New Zealand will face Group A leaders Australia in Saturday’s second semi-final, to be played in the evening UK time, after England take on India in the day game.

Brunt has enjoyed an excellent tournament so far. She ended Thursday night’s match with 2 for 4 from three overs, while she took 1 for 16 and scored an unbeaten 38 from 23 balls in a 26-run win against South Africa and claimed 1 for 8 from three overs as England beat Sri Lanka by five wickets. Her fourth ball against New Zealand was an offcutter that sent Sophie Devine’s leg stump cartwheeling, a ball she added to her arsenal under previous England Women’s coach Mark Robinson.”He challenged me to get better as a player,” Brunt said. “He’s seen a lot of 30-year-olds not be able to up their game at that stage. You either fizz out or you step up.”It was a challenge and I wanted to prove him wrong, step up, so I gained a couple of balls and that’s my banker, and I bring it out when I need to against who I need to. I’m really happy for having picked that up in such a late stage of my career.”Issy Wong continues to shine as part of England’s new generation•Getty ImagesBrunt’s eighth delivery was similar but faster and pinged the top of Amelia Kerr’s middle stump as New Zealand slid to 10 for 2. Then Issy Wong, the 20-year-old quick representing England’s next wave of seam bowlers, took 2 for 10 from her three overs, including the tournament’s leading run-scorer, Suzie Bates, to have New Zealand in dire distress.Brunt was full of praise for the likes of Wong and left-arm seamer Freya Kemp, who is just 17, as is Alice Capsey, who sits second behind only Bates on the tournament run-scoring chart. All three England youngsters made their international debuts in the bilateral series against South Africa immediately before the Games and have taken to the task with ease, seeming to revel in the atmosphere of a 10,000-plus crowd at Edgbaston.”I know for a fact they love it, and they’re not intimidated,” Brunt said. “They’re very confident people and you can’t play international sport without confidence and arrogance in a healthy way.”It’s like boxers isn’t it? They talk a good game. They say they’ll never lose, they’re the best ever, and that’s the kind of arrogance you’ve got to have because it takes a lot to step out into a crowd like that and put yourself out there in front of thousands of people. I’m glad they’ve got it because I feel like that’s been a key ingredient for myself in my career.”Devine, the New Zealand captain, joked that the end of that illustrious career couldn’t come quickly enough.”To be perfectly honest, me and Suze [Bates] said we can’t wait till she retires,” Devine smiled. “She’s been pestering us for 15-odd years. She’s just outstanding. She defies her age and her skill is unbelievable, so full credit, to still be able to run in and bowl the way that she does.”She’s a really wily player. She probably isn’t as quick as she used to be, she’ll be the first to admit that… I hope so, because otherwise she’s probably going to send me a few beamers. But a really smart bowler and she leads that team well. She will leave a massive hole when she does retire, which is hopefully very soon.”

    WHAT HAPPENED?

Sergio Ramos responded to Monterrey fans following a heartbreaking 2-1 defeat to Tigres in Clásico Regio 140. Rayados had been leading thanks to a goal by Ramos, but a dramatic late turnaround saw Sebastián Córdova equalize in the 90th minute, and Nicolás Ibáñez seal the win for Tigres at 90+5.

The crushing loss was a heavy blow for Martín Demichelis’ squad, the coaching staff, and the fans. In response, captain Sergio Ramos didn’t wait long to share an emotional message with the supporters.

"We know yesterday's result was tough, but we also know that if it hurts, it’s because it matters to us," said the Spanish defender. He also emphasized the lessons learned: "It’s time to learn from our mistakes and the small details – those are what define games like this. Thank you for always standing by our side. On Wednesday, we go again."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The Clásico Regio is one of the biggest rivalries in Mexican football, if not the biggest. Fans and players experience this matchup to the fullest, and the 140th edition did not disappoint. Tigres mounted a dramatic comeback in stoppage time, with controversial refereeing decisions and three red cards – one for Tigres and two for Rayados.

Monterrey had the game practically secured, but it was Guido Pizarro’s team that ultimately left the "Volcán" with the victory, igniting wild celebrations among the fans in the stadium.

    WHAT MARTÍN DEMICHELIS SAID

"I don’t like to talk about referees, but the real protagonists are the players. Today, there was someone who wanted to be more of a protagonist, and that shouldn’t be the case," the Monterrey manager said.

Babar says Shaheen will be rested for at least two ODIs against Netherlands

Pakistan captain Babar Azam has said the team is looking to manage Shaheen Shah Afridi’s “long-term workload and health” as he recovers from a knee injury, with the aim of getting him ready in time for the Asia Cup.”We’re taking a couple of doctors on the way to take care of Shaheen,” Babar said at a press conference before Pakistan’s departure for the Netherlands. “We’re looking long term at his fitness and health. We want him to play a game against Netherlands if he’s fit and be ready for the Asia Cup. Our combination is quite good. In T20s the middle order responded well to challenges.”With Hasan Ali dropped from the side, that opens the door for lesser experienced fast bowlers to make their mark in the Netherlands, especially as Babar believes the conditions on offer will be similar to what England throws up, and therefore presumably suitable to fast bowlers. Haris Rauf, Shahnawaz Dahani, Naseem Shah and Mohammad Wasim are all part of the travelling contingent, and expected to be heavily involved in the three ODIs.Related

  • Pakistan look to plug ODI holes against depleted Netherlands

There will be particular interest in who Pakistan pick as their opening bowling pair, an area where, Afridi’s reliable brilliance aside, Pakistan have been unsettled in the ODI format. Each of Rauf, Dahani and Wasim have taken the new ball at some point or another, and since the 2019 World Cup, so have Hasan Ali, Mohammad Hasnain, Mohammad Amir and Usman Shinwari. Haris and Hasan, who have been tasked with this responsibility most regularly aside from Afridi, have the worst economy and strike rate with it. In Afridi’s absence, that will be a weakness Babar hopes to address properly.”Our fast-bowling bench strength is excellent,” he said. “They’ve now got an opportunity to showcase their skills. This is how you expand your pool. I support Hasan Ali because he’s a team man. Yes, he’s not in form, but it’s not like he has to prove anything. Domestic cricket is coming up. He’ll play that and make a strong comeback hopefully.”We have 11 trump cards. Each of them can be matchwinners on their day. I have faith in every one of them, whether batters of bowlers. I think the conditions will be similar to England. The weather will be cooler. We practiced with the air conditioning on indoors, perhaps that helps simulate the conditions! We couldn’t practice much because of the rains, but we got a practice match in, which gives you a good sense of conditions.”Babar also appeared to pour cold water on murmurs of a return to the side for veteran Shoaib Malik ahead of the Asia Cup and T20 World Cup, emphasising the importance of backing young players who had been assigned to replace him.”The team has been announced after discussions with everyone. We met with the coach and chief selector and did what was best for Pakistan. There are matches immediately after Netherlands, so it’s unlikely there will be time for changes.”When senior players leave the side, those replacing them need focus. Hafeez and Malik were huge players and we’ll miss them a lot, and players like Asif Ali, Khushdil Shah and Iftikhar need to fill their boots. We want to give them plenty of matches and confidence, and these players have performed. We’re also looking to utilise Shadab Khan’s batting, because batting depth is very useful in T20 cricket now.”We’re not going to just rest our senior players, we’ll play with a combination of senior and junior players. There are important Super League points at stake which we can’t lose. I’m going to the Netherlands for the first time, too. If things go badly after we field young players, we’ll cop criticism then, too. Everyone won’t be happy with our decisions, but we have to do what’s best for Pakistan cricket.”Babar, or indeed any of his team-mates, may want for nothing or need no introduction in Pakistan, but that is emphatically not true of other athletes in the country who happen to pursue a sport not called cricket. Babar paid rich tribute to Pakistan’s most successful athletes at the Commonwealth Games, where the country came away with a gold medal each in weightlifting and javelin throwing. He called on increased support to athletes across sports, bemoaning the facilities they enjoyed as being “not good enough”.”I was very proud to see Noah Dastagir and Arshad Nadeem win gold medals. There’s so much respect for how much hard work they put in. You cannot praise them enough. But you need to give them better facilities. I saw the conditions they were practicing in, and I think that was unacceptable. When you give the athletes better facilities, they’ll win many more gold medals.”

Ibrahim, Shahidi, Naveen back in Afghanistan T20I squad for Ireland series

Ibrahim Zadran, Hashmatullah Shahidi and Naveen-ul-Haq have been named in Afghanistan’s 16-member squad for the five-match T20I series in Ireland. Spinners Qais Ahmad and Mujeeb ur Rahman, who were not part of Afghanistan’s series against Zimbabwe in June due to T20 Blast commitments, have been added as reserves. ESPNcricinfo understands that Mujeeb will be added to the main squad once he gets his visa sorted. Ihsanullah Janat, who made his T20I debut against Zimbabwe, has been left out.Opening batter Ibrahim was part of the ODI side for the Zimbabwe tour, but his last T20I was in November 2019 against West Indies. He has been in good form in the ongoing Shpageeza Cricket League, where he is currently the third highest run-getter with 283 runs in seven innings at an average of 56.60. Top-order batter Shahidi was also part of the ODI series against Zimbabwe and last played a T20I in March 2021. Fast bowler Naveen, who has not represented Afghanistan in any format since November last year, was the second highest wicket-taker in the T20 Blast this season, taking 24 wickets in 14 matches for Leicestershire.Top-order batter Usman Ghani and seam bowler Nijat Masood, who were part of the side that played against Zimbabwe, will also travel to Ireland as reserves along with Qais and Mujeeb.Mohammad Nabi continues to lead the side, which also includes 17-year-old left-arm spinner Noor Ahmad, who took 4 for 10 on his T20I debut against Zimbabwe in June.Former Afghanistan captain Gulbadin Naib was left out of the squad once again, after being dropped following the ODI series against Bangladesh in February. He was omitted from the T20I series of that tour and has not represented Afghanistan since. The series against Ireland comprises five T20Is in Belfast and starts on August 9. To avoid visa issues that have plagued Afghanistan of late, the Afghanistan Cricket Board had obtained UAE residency visas for nearly dozen players and officials.Afghanistan squad: Mohammad Nabi (capt), Rahmanullah Gurbaz (wk), Hazratullah Zazai, Ibrahim Zadran, Darwish Rasooli, Najibullah Zadran, Hashmatullah Shahidi, Afsar Zazai, Karim Janat, Azmatullah Omarzai, Sharfuddin Ashraf, Rashid Khan, Fazal Haq Farooqi, Farid Ahmed Malik, Naveen ul Haq, Noor Ahmed

After Brereton: Sheffield United could sign McAtee 2.0 in brilliant PL gem

Sheffield United look to be the main big spenders in the Championship this January transfer window, with a deal edging ever closer for in-demand attacker Tom Cannon to join for around £10m.

On top of that, one confirmed transfer is already through the door in Ben Brereton Diaz, who links back up with the Blades after a fruitful loan switch during the 2023/24 season which raised a rare smile on the faces of United fans even as a depressing relegation was confirmed.

Chris Wilder will hope the Chile international goes on to be as successful as James McAtee was over two loan stints in South Yorkshire, before the exciting midfielder then found it immensely hard to make the grade back at Manchester City.

James McAtee's time at Sheffield United

Indeed, the City man was a great success when donning United red and white, with his efforts during the 2022/23 season helping his new side win promotion to the Premier League.

He amassed nine goals and three assists in league action as a lively presence from the middle of the park, leading to a second spell coming his way up in the promised land of the top flight.

Former Sheffield United loanee James McAtee.

The tricky 22-year-old would succeed here too, much like Brereton Diaz managed despite all the on-field difficulties, with a further six goal contributions coming his way in the league before heading back to the Etihad pleased with his time in South Yorkshire.

There must have been some temptation on the end of the Blades to get even more of the old band back together when it was widely reported this month that the Salford-born midfielder was growing restless with his game-time under Pep Guardiola, with Championship rivals Leeds United allegedly sniffing around.

Manchester City's JamesMcAteeduring the warm up before the match

But, no such reunion has occurred. Yet, that doesn’t mean Wilder wouldn’t welcome back another familiar midfielder instead…

Sheffield United looking at "brilliant" PL star

Much like McAtee, Wolverhampton Wanderers man Tommy Doyle must also be getting slightly agitated with his lack of consistent minutes at Molineux, with only three starts coming his way this season in the Premier League.

Off the back of that, the promotion chasers could be willing to test the waters with the Old Gold over securing a deal for Doyle to return to United, with the Sheffield Star reporting earlier this month that a move would be considered owing to the team’s light numbers centrally.

Like his former teammate in the middle, however, Doyle did more than enough during his first stint at the club to suggest he could stroll straight into Wilder’s starting XI, as seen with a thunderbolt effort finding the back of the net to send the Blades to an unbelievable FA Cup semi-final.

In truth, as much as McAtee would often steal the limelight as the standout loanee coming from a top-flight giant, Doyle was equally as key for Paul Heckingbottom’s men in promotion being tasted, despite not being front and centre of every single of the now Preston North End manager’s lineups.

Doyle more than delivered in crunch times at Bramall Lane with seven goal contributions managed from just 21 league starts, with Wilder wanting to bring in the 23-year-old for some added depth to help out the likes of Sydie Peck with Ollie Arblaster sidelined for the foreseeable.

Noted as being a “brilliant” talent in the past by Wolves journalist Lewis Keen when starring in spurts, United could really show they mean business in the promotion race by winning a loan star that has been successful in reaching the Premier League just two years ago.

Whilst Leeds United continue to be quiet in the window, their Yorkshire foes continue to flex their muscles, as the race for promotion heats up once more.

Nepal appoint Manoj Prabhakar as head coach

Prabhakar has also coached Afghanistan in the past•Mid-Day

Nepal have appointed former Indian cricketer Manoj Prabhakar as their head coach. He replaces Pubudu Dassanayake, who resigned from the post in July citing personal reasons to take up a similar job in Canada.Prabhakar played 39 Test matches and 130 ODIs for India in an international career that spanned from 1984 to 1996. He has coached the Delhi, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh teams, and was the bowling coach of Delhi when they won the Ranji Trophy in 2008.
