Rumours abound now that the season has shifted into January, with the winter transfer market open for business and clubs perusing their menus as they ascertain whether deals might be viable.
For Liverpool, no news concerning the incoming department. Arne Slot is satisfied with his first-placed squad, and though there’s a clear need for a new left-back, expect movement in that area during the off-season.

Six points clear at the top of the Premier League, the Reds have their sights set on silverware and may launch a winter bid if the right opportunity comes along.
It might just have at that.
Liverpool planning for new forwards
As per Football Insider, Liverpool are plotting a move for Feyenoord winger Anis Hadj-Moussa, with the 22-year-old impressing in the Dutch Eredivisie this term.
Transfer Focus
Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.
Feyenoord, Slot’s old stomping ground, welcomed the Algerian winger at the start of the season after Slot had previously failed to sign him. He’s gone from strength to strength this year, validating the Liverpool coach’s intrigue, and he might even be an excellent backup option for the mighty Mohamed Salah.
Slot has allayed rumours concerning Federico Chiesa’s potential Anfield exit, six months on from his eye-catching £12.5m arrival from Juventus.
Feyenoord forward Anis Hadj Moussa
In spite of this, Chiesa has only started once for Liverpool this season amid frustrating fitness problems and a player such as Hadj-Moussa could be perfect to maintain the Merseysiders’ exceptional campaign.
Why Liverpool should take a punt on Hadj-Moussa
Feyenoord snapped the clinical left-footer up for a nominal fee and thus would turn a big profit if suitors were to meet their reported £10m asking price – FSG love a bargain and this may be something that entices them.
Anis Hadj Moussa scores for Feyenoord
He’s young and playing with an unfettered avidity that is tempting Liverpool toward lodging an official offer, starting his campaign with Feyenoord on the fringes but growing in stature after showcasing his clinical quality.
Indeed, Hadj-Moussa might have only scored six goals across 19 matches in all competitions this term but each one has been posted in November or later. Talent scout Jacek Kulig has even described him as “one of Europe’s most pleasant surprises” this season.
Given that he’s bagged three goals across five Champions League fixtures, there’s clearly a degree of quality that could elevate Liverpool’s system, and it might actually work out best for Hadj-Moussa if Salah were to extend his stay at the club, for he could absorb rich fruits as his understudy for the next couple of years.
As per FBref, the Algeria star ranks among the top 2% of positional peers performing in the Champions League this term for non-penalty goals (1.06) struck and the top 15% for progressive carries (6.00) per 90 minutes, making a convincing remark upon his chances among Liverpool’s talented forwards.
Equally, he also ranks among the top 5% for dribbles (successful take-ons per 90) among those in his position across Europe’s next best 14 leagues, further emphasising that sense of unpredictability.
There’s actually a sort of similarity to Salah that could see him emulate the Egypt sensation, for he would arrive before achieving greatness with a natural-born goalscoring sense.
Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah
Hadj-Moussa – who Dutch legend Ruud Gullit lauded as an “unpredictable player” – is blessed with a high-paced and versatile attacking style, and his directness could serve him well as he acts as a focal point, curving in from the right.
Note that he is also composed. He’s confident and assured in his quality. Sofascore record that his three-goal campaign in Europe’s elite competition has yet to be blemished by a single missed big chance, speaking of a clinical edge that is perhaps already ahead of certain members of Slot’s frontline. No names.
It’s hard to articulate how good Salah has been this season, with the 32-year-old posting 21 goals and 17 assists across 27 matches for his club. That doesn’t tell the whole story, but it paints a relevant picture.
Liverpool are undoubtedly over-reliant on their talisman’s potency, but it hasn’t derailed the campaign so far. Liverpool might feel in command in the Premier League, but what about the Champions League’s dangerous business end? What about the FA Cup?
There’s enough going for the Redmen that they will feel capable of wading deep down each stream, but with Chiesa’s unreliability, it may be crucial for an extra part in the mould of Hadj-Moussa. Hark back to Takumi Minamino, back in 2021/22, whose goals in the Carabao Cup proved invaluable in winning the competition while fighting across every other front.

Salah is one of the finest goalscorers in Premier League history and to say that this relative unknown in Hadj-Moussa, who is only two months into his first real purple patch, could be his successor is quite a brazen claim.
However, he is endowed with similar properties that could see him operate within similar parameters to Liverpool’s biggest threat and were he to perch under the Egyptian’s umbrella, protected by the lashing scrutiny that would be posted with a big-time role in Slot’s squad, there might just be a chance that he could become a major player.
Hadj-Moussa has been on Slot’s radar before, and Liverpool fans have been treated to some expert tactical qualities in recent months. Let’s trust his judgement, and bring him in to serve under Salah’s wing.

Somerset trail by 400-plus as Essex’s South African spinner looks the likelier threat
David Hopps26-Jul-2022Comparisons are odious, and they have been since John Lydgate, a 15th century monk and poet once based in these parts, first uttered something approaching the phrase nearly 700 years ago. But odious or not, with the South Africa Test series approaching it was hard to ignore the match-up between Jack Leach and Simon Harmer.Leach ground away for 39 overs without taking a wicket as Essex built a first-innings total beyond 500. By the time he turned one really sharply, Nick Browne was 203 and the ball ran away for a leg bye. Over ten-and-a-half hours, Browne, amassed an unbeaten 234, the worthiest and most consistent of efforts from a batter who knows his own limitations and is comfortable with them. It was his fourth double hundred in the Championship and the 20th in this season’s Championship – already the most since 2016.When Somerset replied, and Harmer was introduced for the ninth over, it took him only four balls to take a wicket that had eluded Leach for the best part of two days. His first ball to Tom Lammonby turned sharply, enough to get into his head. The fourth delivery, a length ball, ran straight on to strike his off stump. Lammonby had gone the way of many before him. He was lost in confusion, front foot splayed way out to the leg side, maybe a pull, then maybe a late cut, then nothing at all. Harmer strolled out to the off side to be joined by grinning teammates. It was his 45th first-class wicket of the season, only Ollie Hannon-Dalby ahead of him. There is a confidence about Harmer, a spin bowler devising sequences to befuddle his opponent. There was little sense of that from Leach, England’s premier spinner, good enough to have played 26 Tests, but often in a holding role. Not helped by bowling in the first innings of the match, he largely plugged a defensive line and rarely hunted out the rough to the left-hander outside off stump even though Browne was his major adversary. Browne took him for only three off-side boundaries and ticked over now and then with a leg-side single. In Matt Renshaw, he found a stoutly supportive teammate. “I know he went for none for a hundred but to bowl 39 overs into the wind to the short side was a testament to him and his skills, he said. “I was pleased how he bowled even if he didn’t get the wickets people might say he needed to.”Out on the boundary, if some Twitter jousting between a group of Essex supporters and Craig Overton was to be believed, Overton had identified this Chelmsford surface as “a Harmer pitch” on the opening day. In essence, it is, although it lacks pace and bounce, and Matt Renshaw and Tom Abell appeared to put things into perspective, both countering Harmer calmly enough, and picking off the seamers. Then from nowhere, just before the close, a ball flew spitefully past Renshaw’s outside edge. They negotiated the second day, gratefully, at 99 for 1.Just the thought of what might be to come had been enough to put Overton in mildly acerbic mood when he bit back at his Twitter taunters: “You forgot I was moaning about the fact [we] were changing in a marquee, have no showers and also portaloos for toilets at a first-class ground”.Chelmsford has always been a cramped, if characterful, ground comprised in part by curious wooden huts, fulfilling a variety of purposes, although now quite a few of them appear to be closed. Add the racism allegations that will bedevil the county until the results of their independent enquiry are published – that enquiry began last November and should be published before the year is up – and John Stephenson, the chief executive, has quite a task ahead in charting a way forward. Some of the most prominent criticism has come from Jahid Ahmed, who played seven first-class matches between 2005 and 2009, and who ultimately came to the conclusion that Essex felt like: “a white man’s world where brown people were outsiders”.As Browne batted staunchly on, adding another 107 to his overnight 127, a marquee rung to speeches and laughter to mark a 75th birthday celebration for David Acfield, a former Essex offspinner, chairman and president, and one of five Board members who were forced to resign in May during the racism affair. Acfield, apparently, will still have a committee room named after him.His birthday was marked by many of his fellow Essex players from the most successful, and entertaining, period in their history. As they exchanged old stories for the umpteenth time, Browne provided a constant backdrop. Their day was three-day cricket, played adventurously, but fortunately the red wine did not flow so freely that they appeared on the boundary edge demanding that he hit out for a quick declaration.Browne is powerfully built, but he has been primarily used over his career as a Championship specialist. He has his own speed limiter built in, set just below 50 runs per 100 balls. On the rare occasions he did try to go big, a couple of thick edges persuaded him to banish the thought from his presence. But the nearest he looked to losing his wicket was on 205 when Harmer played the ball in front of square and hurried him through for a tight single. He did accelerate, but only marginally – his bedding-in 50 took 124 balls, followed by 104, 95, then 94 – but his tenacity never wavered.Tom Lammonby found some value in the day with a career-best 3 for 35 (he had only previously taken six first-class wickets), the best of them the removal of Paul Walter’s off stump when he seamed one back slightly through the gate. Matt Critchley fell trying to run a wide one and Adam Rossington, who played with gusto for his 32, slog-swept him to deep midwicket. The innings then came to a halt as Browne and Harmer ground on, Harmer having seven from 49 balls at one point. In the marquee, some famous old players might have been a little impatient. But Harmer was probably just timing the declaration for his own needs, awaiting signs that the ball was ready to turn. Leach will hope that Somerset bat well enough to give him another opportunity on a wearing pitch, but he will be lucky.
Wolverhampton Wanderers enjoyed the new manager bounce over the weekend as Vitor Pereira led the Old Gold to just their third Premier League win of the season.
It was a commanding display against Leicester City, with goals from Goncalo Guedes, Rodrigo Gomes, and Matheus Cunha in a frantic first half.
The same players that had been guilty of underperforming under Gary O’Neil over the previous few weeks certainly turned up against the Foxes on Sunday afternoon. This could be a turning point in their season.
The January transfer market will open in just over a week and it comes at the perfect time for the new manager to strengthen his squad ahead of the second half of the season.
Vitor Pereira could lose key Wolves players in January
The former Porto manager may have to sell a player or two once the winter window opens to strengthen his first team.
Several players fit the bill in this regard. Rayan Ait-Nouri has attracted interest from Liverpool in recent months as the defender has enjoyed a wonderful start to the campaign.
Cunha is another star who has consistently delivered for the Old Gold throughout 2024/25, which has naturally led to interest from bigger clubs in the Premier League.
Vitor Pereira
Manchester United are reportedly keen on adding him to their squad and one of Pereira’s first jobs will be to convince both of these players that staying in the Midlands is the best course of action for their careers, at least until the summer.
Plenty of managers in the past have been guilty of selling players far too hastily in the past. One good example came in the summer of 2023 when Julen Lopetegui sold someone who had shone for the club since joining permanently in 2019.

Raul Jimenez’s time at Wolves
Since he left, Raul Jimenez has showcased his true talents for Fulham in the top flight, and it is clear that the club must regret selling him, especially for such a low transfer fee.
Following the club’s promotion to the Premier League in 2018, Nuno Espírito Santo was keen on bolstering his team ahead of new challenges.
Jimenez joined on a season-long loan from Benfica and went on to score 15 league goals as Wolves finished seventh in their first season back.

This led the club to splurge around £30m to keep him at Molineux permanently and it turned out to be money well spent.
The 2019/20 campaign saw the Mexican forward score a total of 27 goals while grabbing ten assists as another seventh-place finish was combined with a run to the quarter-finals of the Europa League.
This would turn out to be Jimenez’s finest season for the Old Gold, as over the next three years, a succession of injury issues would limit his effectiveness for the club.
Indeed, he missed 53 games in total, managing to find the back of the net on just 13 occasions as he struggled to get back to full fitness.
In the summer of 2023, it was clear his future lay elsewhere, which led Julen Lopetegui to sell him.
With first-team football hard to secure in the Midlands, Fulham spent just £5m to bring the Mexican to London last summer and the move has turned into an inspired one.
Jimenez struggled to gain much first-team football for Wolves, despite shaking off his injury issues, and it was clear that a fresh start was required for the veteran striker.
Might the club regret this move, however? Jimenez is now in stunning form and is even comparable to a striker who is lighting up Serie A for Inter Milan…
How Jimenez is performing at Fulham
The 2023/24 season saw the former Wolves hitman score seven league goals in 24 matches as he acclimatised to life in the capital, but he is on course to score more this term.
In 17 top-flight matches, the striker is currently on five goals and two assists, as Marco Silva has brought the best out of him clearly.
Along with his goals, Jimenez has also created five big chances, averages 0.5 key passes per game and registers 2.1 shots per game as he looks lively in the opposition penalty area.
His performances have also allowed him to star for Mexico, scoring against the USA in a match between the two recently, and he was praised by manager Javier Aguirre, who said:
“He came back very well [from his injury], very well. He’s scored goals, he’s made assists. He looks mature and in good form, having completely overcome his injury. I think he is definitely a leader for us.”
According to FBref, Argentine sensational Lisandro Martinez is now the sixth-most ‘similar player’ to Jimenez. The Inter forward is valued at around £90m by Inter after a wonderful few seasons, so it is an amazing comparison.
The pair have registered similar statistics domestically this season across a range of metrics including goals and assists (both 7), shots per 90 (3.07 vs 2.93), shot-creating actions per 90 (2.08 vs 2.43), goal-creating actions (4 vs 6) and touches in the attacking penalty area (68 vs 54) in their respective top flight leagues, indicating their poacher-like qualities.
These statistics prove that Jimenez is on par with one of the finest centre-forwards in Europe’s top five leagues, showcasing just how impressive he has been in recent months.
Pereira would love to have someone of this quality at his disposal as Wolves aim to move away from the relegation zone. Did they sell him too hastily? Based on his performance this term, the answer is yes.

Emmanuel Petit rips into Grealish
Claims Guardiola has lost faith in £100m signing
Urges Grealish to rediscover love of the game
Follow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱
WHAT HAPPENED?
Grealish has struggled for minutes at City this season, and has been limited to just six Premier League starts. As a result of his fall down the City pecking order, the former Aston Villa ace, who arrived at the Etihad in a £100 million ($129m) deal in 2021, missed out on Gareth Southgate's England squad for Euro 2024 and was also overlooked for Thomas Tuchel's first squad.

THE BIGGER PICTURE
Now, Emmanuel Petit has claimed that Grealish has lost the trust of his manager, and has suggested that he must rediscover his love of the game if he is to find his way back into the Three Lions squad ahead of the 2026 World Cup. The former Arsenal midfielder believes he may have lost the hunger to do so, however.
WHAT PETIT SAID
Petit told : "We know that he can show so much quality, but we haven’t seen it this season. I don't know what's happening with him because Pep Guardiola seems to keep him on the bench. He doesn't have any confidence in Grealish anymore, he doesn’t believe in him and he doesn’t trust him because he's not in the starting line-up for Manchester City. Jack’s in trouble with Pep Guardiola, but as well, he's out of the England team. He missed Euro 2024, and his international career is at a crossroads, his City career too."
He added: "Grealish needs to ask himself, can I get into the England team and represent my country at the World Cup if I continue to be a bit-part player at Manchester City? If you want to play for your national team, you have to compete every single week in the starting line-up, you need to show the quality that you have and your ability as a footballer on the grass, and Jack hasn’t been able to demonstrate his ability for months now. I don't know what's happening with him. Did he lose the passion for the game?
"His motivation is not there anymore. The solution is simple: look in the mirror and ask yourself, how do you want the remainder of your career to go. Look at yourself, first. Find the answer. He hasn’t shown the desire or the fight to be a first team player for Manchester City. He needs to get that back if he wants to keep playing at the highest level."

WHAT NEXT?
City face Leicester City on Wednesday evening before a derby clash with Manchester United this weekend. It remains to be seen if Grealish will be involved.
Chelsea have clearly undergone a massive squad rebuild in the past few years, getting rid of some of their older squad players and replacing them with young and exciting talents in each position on the pitch.
In some areas, you can already see this paying off, such as central midfield with the big-money signings of Enzo Fernández, Moises Caicedo and Roméo Lavia, who could dominate that midfield for years to come.
However, one area the Blues continue to spend money on in each window is wide attackers, acquiring the likes of Pedro Neto and Jadon Sancho in the summer just gone, to join the likes of Mykhailo Mudryk, Noni Madueke and Raheem Sterling in the years before.
Whilst many of these signings have shown glimpses of brilliance, it seems Chelsea are yet to fully nail down that superstar wide player, and intentions remain around the club to improve in this area if the opportunity arises.
Chelsea considering LaLiga winger
Speaking on The Athletic FC Podcast, David Ornstein reported that Chelsea maintain an interest in Athletic Bilbao winger, Nico Williams. Arsenal are also interested in the Spanish wideman, but the package would likely cost around €60m (£50m) which is the player’s release clause.
It is said that the overall package of the deal (including the winger’s high wages) is what deterred Chelsea from a deal in the summer, and this is likely to be the case again with any immediate deal for Williams. According to Capology, the 22-year-old is currently earning just over €200k-per-week, which is around £167k.
Williams has made 25 appearances for Bilbao in all competitions so far this season, scoring two goals, providing five assists and totalling 1,710 minutes played.
Williams vs Mudryk comparison
Unfortunately for Chelsea, with Mudryk now out through suspension for an unknown period of time, the Blues could be forced to act early on another forward addition, and Williams would offer that. The Ukrainian has made 73 appearances since arriving at the club in 2023, scoring ten goals and providing nine assists in that time.
So, by taking a look at the stats, we can see just why the “devastating” winger – as he was described by Emmanuel Petit – would be a sizable upgrade.

When comparing the two players, you can instantly tell both have similar play styles, in the fact they are truly carry-first wingers, boasting the quality and creativity to find their teammates with progressive and key passes and find entries into the box via their skill set.
However, whilst Williams has struggled for goals this season (only two so far, giving him 0.09 goals per 90), his shot volume is still higher than Mudryk’s and that is a trait which Chelsea lacks in wide areas apart from Madueke on the right.
This blend of ability to create for others, as well as himself, would be a welcomed attribute for Enzo Maresca on the wing.
Whether Chelsea look to sign Williams in January, go back in for him in the summer, or move onto other targets come the summer, the need for another left-sided player will be determined by the length of time Mudryk is out, so it’s definitely one to keep a close eye on.

Marizanne Kapp: Lizelle Lee's retirement has been 'mentally tough' for South Africa
Lizelle Lee says CSA threatened to deny her an NOC for the Hundred
Kapp and Tumi Sekhukhune were notable omissions as South Africa took to the field for the first of three T20Is against England at Chelmsford on Thursday, the latter because of a recurrent right groin injury.”The 23-year old Sekhukhune experienced discomfort during the warm-ups ahead of the third and final ODI against England on Monday and after being assessed by the team’s medical staff, it was agreed she will be sent home to begin her rehabilitation,” Cricket South Africa said in a statement.”Meanwhile, star allrounder Kapp has requested to travel back home to Gqeberha to be close to her family during this trying time.” Kapp’s departure follows the shock retirement of batter Lizelle Lee immediately after the drawn Test which kicked off the multi-format series in Taunton last month, which Kapp said earlier this month had taken a mental toll on her as one of Lee’s “best friends”.Lee later accused CSA of threatening to deny her an NOC to participate in the Hundred, but CSA has refuted her claim and said national coach Hilton Moreeng was aware of the organisation’s actions, which contributed to her retirement. Moreeng and CSA have rejected Lee’s claims.
Kapp’s availability status for the Commonwealth Games was yet to be confirmed, with the tournament beginning in Birmingham on July 29 and South Africa due to open their campaign against New Zealand the following day.She scored a match-saving 150 and 43 not out in the rain-affected Test as well as back-to-back fifties in the last two of their three ODIs, both of which South Africa lost by more than 100 runs.Top-order batter Tazmin Brits has been called up to South Africa’s T20I squad for the remainder of their series with England which includes T20Is in Worcester on Saturday and Derby on Monday.
