The Paraguay international finds himself back in the United States after returning to Atlanta United during the winter transfer window. He had previously left Georgia for Tyneside in 2019 when forming part of the biggest transfer MLS had ever seen.

Almiron is now rubbing shoulders with eight-time Ballon d’Or winner Messi, having lined up against Inter Miami in his latest outing. The South American duo traded shirts at the final whistle, with Messi on target for the Herons as they prevailed 2-1 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Landing that No.10 jersey is quite a coup, with Almiron already in celebratory mood before he took to the field against Miami. Prior to kick-off in that contest, he had seen Newcastle bring their 56-year wait for major silverware to a close when seeing off Liverpool 2-1 in the League Cup final at Wembley.

Almiron could land himself a winners’ medal there, having figured in four Carabao Cup ties for the Magpies prior to leaving St James’ Park for the United States – including the first leg of their semi-final victory over Arsenal.

Chelsea in fast talks to offload "big" player with January 2nd deadline set

Chelsea are in fast-moving talks to offload a “very big” player in their squad, with his suitors apparently eager to get him tied up and over the line by the very start of January.

Chelsea prepare for Astana as Enzo Maresca confirms squad decision

The west Londoners are back in action this afternoon, as manager Enzo Maresca prepares his side to face off against Kazakhstani minnows Astana in the Conference League.

Chelsea set eye-watering Cole Palmer price tag as Real Madrid circle

The ex-Man City gem is fast becoming a Premier League superstar.

ByEmilio Galantini Dec 11, 2024

Chelsea have been allocated a bizarre kick-off time of 15:30 this afternoon due to time zones, with Kazakhstan being five hours ahead of the United Kingdom, so local supporters will watch the two teams play at around 20:30 in their region of the world.

Maresca also has to factor in their Premier League clash against Brentford on Sunday, and the Italian has vowed in his pre-match press conference to give as many players as possible a full 90 minutes each week, no matter what competition.

“We have a session this morning,” said Maresca on Chelsea’s line up against Astana in his pre-match press conference.

“The general decision [over the squad] is already there but we will see.

“Some of them will be here, some of them will fly with us. We try to manage in the same way we have done until today. We have many young players with us, the rest will be working.

“The target since we started the season is to allow all of them, no matter the competition, to play 90 minutes every week. Most of those who play tomorrow would have also played against Southampton last week. So we will try to keep them in the regular situation of playing 90 minutes every week. This is what we’re trying to do.”

Youngster Josh Acheampong has attracted recent interest from Real Madrid amid disputes over a new Chelsea contract, but his omission from the squad has come to an end recently, as the club are apparently close to tying him down with an extension.

The 18-year-old is also likely to start against Astana this afternoon, confirms Maresca, which would be his second senior appearance of the season after a brief cameo in the Carabao Cup against Barrow.

A player who could also feature tonight is exit-linked midfielder Cesare Casadei, but according to Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport, tonight could be one of his last games in Chelsea blue this season.

Chelsea in fast-moving talks over loaning Cesare Casadei to Monza

As per the outlet, via Sport Witness, Chelsea are in rapid negotiations over loaning Casadei to Monza, and the Serie A side are very keen to sign him by January 2, as they desperately look to bolster their midfield options.

Talks are said to be “moving quickly” and have been ongoing for several weeks, and the potential transfer is seen as a real win-win.

Cesare Casadei

The 21-year-old, who worked with Maresca at Leicester, has featured regularly in cup competitions and attracted praise from Chelsea’s head coach – but this move would allow the player to garner more minutes in his homeland.

“This year, we are using him like a holding midfielder,” said Maresca on Casadei’s use for Chelsea in October.

“The reason why is because I think we go in the direction where the middle you need physical players. Cesare is very big, physically strong and helps us when we want to press. On the ball, he is improving a lot. Tonight he played one touch, so we are very happy. For him, it’s the same as the rest; many things he can do better but he is in the right direction.”

Rangers have an "unbelievable" star who could now be their next big sale

Sunday was an absolutely sickening afternoon for all of a Rangers persuasion, with the Ibrox side defeated by fierce rivals Celtic in the League Cup Final in the most heartbreaking fashion imaginable.

Fair to say Glasgow’s big two served up a thriller.

Nedim Bajrami fired the Light Blues in front on the cusp of half-time at Hampden, only for Celtic to lead 2-1 and then 3-2 in the second half, but Mohamed Diomande and then Danilo hit back, the latter with a towering header mere moments after his team had fallen behind.

This forced extra time and, ultimately, a penalty shootout; just the second shootout in Glasgow derby history.

Nine of the ten spot-kicks were scored, but somebody had to miss and that someone turned out to be Ridvan Yilmaz, his tame attempt saved by Kasper Schmeichel, meaning it was Celtic who once again hoisted aloft the trophy.

From Philippe Clement’s point-of-view, he is still yet to beat Celtic in six attempts, but there are certainly signs his team are moving in the right direction, making the next Premiership Old Firm fixture at Ibrox as soon as 2 January so crucial.

Rangers players starting to show their best

Of course, Sunday’s shootout defeat was devastating, but it was another sign of progress from Rangers.

Three days earlier, they’d held Tottenham Hotspur to a 1-1 draw in the Europa League, unfortunate not to win that one, having scored nine goals across back-to-back Premiership victories against Kilmarnock and Ross County beforehand.

A key factor behind the Gers’ recent resurgence has been the emergence of Hamza Igamane.

The striker arrived from AS FAR in his native Morocco for £2.5m last summer, having minimal impact before opening his account against FCSB in late October, before scoring five in five between 28 November and 12 December, bagging a brace against Nice, before breaking the deadlock when Spurs visited Govan last Thursday.

Ianis Hagi’s return has also attracted a lot of attention, starting each of the last four domestic fixtures, registering a pair of assists during the demolition of Killie earlier this month.

This season’s top-scorer Vaclav Cerny, who has nine goals to his name, has also earned wide-spread praise, but there’s another Rangers player, who’s perhaps going under the radar, that could prove to be the squad’s most valuable asset.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Rangers next big sale could be inbound

Nicolas Raskin arrived at Rangers from Standard Liège for £1.75m back in January 2023, making 67 appearances in Light Blue to date, his only goal for the club, so far, came during a 4-0 demolition of Hibs in October last year.

According to Sofascore, the Belgian is only Rangers’ joint-seventh highest-rated player this season, albeit he’s been rated 7 or higher in three of his last four Europa League appearances, as well as for each of his last seven Premiership outings.

Raskin is clearly a man in form, so could he command a massive fee, should he depart Glasgow in 2025?

As you can see, since Rangers returned to the Scottish Premiership in 2016, they have sold just six players for £2.5m or more, with Calvin Bassey, Nathan Patterson and Joe Arbo the only men departing for at least £10m.

During the same period, for context, Celtic have sold seven players for £10m+: Matt O’Riley, Jota, Kieran Tierney, Moussa Dembélé, Odsonne Édouard, Kristoffer Ajer and Jeremie Frimpong departing for a combined £138.5m.

If Rangers want to compete with their cross-city rivals, something Clement says they currently are unable to do financially, they need to start selling players for huge profits.

Key players from the Steven Gerrard title-winning campaign such as Borna Barišić, Connor Goldson, Ryan Kent, and Alfredo Morelos have all been allowed to depart for free, or for minimal fees, which simply isn’t allowing the Gers to reinvest.

So, they need to find those players and perhaps Raskin could be the man for the job. Rangers legend Kris Boyd labelled Raskin as “unbelievable” against Tottenham last week, adding that “it was his best performance for Rangers”.

The stats certainly told a pleasant story. Against elite midfielders such as James Maddison and Rodrigo Bentancur, the 23-year-old registered the most touches (76) and the most passes (49) of any Gers player, showcasing what a talent he is. As Glasgow World reporter Lewis Anderson stated, he was the ‘best player on the park against Tottenham’.

His stock continues to rise, so could he depart for a gigantic profit?

Crystal Palace struck gold when they sold a "bagsman" for as much as Zaha

This year has been a strange one for Crystal Palace. The Eagles bid farewell to Roy Hodgson and then enjoyed an incredible revival under Oliver Glasner before things went a bit pear-shaped.

Indeed, the Eagles sold Michael Olise this summer, joining Bayern Munich for a fee of around £50.8m and becoming their highest sale of all time. Since then, they’ve only picked up a single win in the Premier League.

Interestingly, the only sale the Eagles have made even close to a similar fee was Aaron Wan-Bissaka when he was snapped by Manchester United in 2019 for £50m.

Joachim Andersen also left Palace that summer, joining Fulham for around £30m and becoming their third-highest sale, ahead of Yannick Bolasie and Alexander Sorloth in fourth and fifth.

Number six on the list though, was Dwight Gayle, who the Eagles sold to Newcastle in 2016 for around £10m, being sold for just as much as club legend, Wilfried Zaha, and England international, Sam Johnstone.

Dwight Gayle's Crystal Palace career in numbers

Gayle made 74 appearances for the Eagles, scoring 25 goals and providing three assists, totalling 3,455 minutes played.

This was an obvious improvement on his first season at Newcastle, scoring 0.30 more goals per 90, hitting 0.98 more shots on target per 90, and increasing his goals/shots on target ratio by 0.13.

Whilst the points per match metric is a team performance metric, Gayle’s influence on Newcastle in his first year can be seen, as he was averaging 1.92 points per match for the Toon in the Championship, scoring a staggering 23 goals in 32 games, earning them promotion back to the top flight.

After making the move to Newcastle for £10m, Gayle made 122 appearances in his six years at the club, netting 34 goals and providing 11 assists in 5,937 minutes played.

Dwight Gayle's market value in 2024

After being sold for such a sum of money, Gayle’s value peaked in June 2019 according to Transfermarkt, valued at around (£12.5m). But from that point, there was a rapid decline in the striker’s value, who is now playing for Hibernian in Scotland.

After being valued at £12.5m in 2019, aged 29, the striker hit a value of just £3.3m two years later in June 2020, aged 31. The ageing forward spent a few years with Stoke City in the Championship and Derby County in League One, before trading England for Scotland.

It was with the Rams that the English striker was lauded as a “bagsman” by teammate Korey Smith, with other players stating “that’s what he does” in regard to Gayle’s scoring prowess.

The 35-year-old has made five appearances for the Scottish side this season, scoring just one goal and totalling 150 minutes played.

Unsurprisingly, he is now valued at just £100k. So despite having a good start to life at Newcastle after his move, the fast decline mean Palace cashed in at just the right time.

Batting powerhouses clash in Royals-Super Giants contest at Wankhede

No clear favourite on who will be Royals’ fifth bowler after Coulter-Nile injury

Srinidhi Ramanujam09-Apr-20222:20

How do Royals deal with Bishnoi?

Big pictureKL Rahul vs Jos Buttler. Ravi Bishnoi vs Yuzvendra Chahal. The two in-form teams Rajasthan Royals and Lucknow Super Giants clash against each other in a tantalising second game of the day at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday. Royals faced a minor hiccup, going down to Royal Challengers Bangalore by four wickets after winning their first two matches comprehensively, and slipped to the fourth position in the points table. A win here against Super Giants, who are placed third with three wins from four matches, will lift Royals to the top. However, that’s easier said than done. Super Giants boast of batting depth where three of their batters Quinton de Kock, Rahul and Deepak Hooda together have notched up 411 runs out of the 693 runs scored by the team and also feature in the top-10 run-getters this season. There is also the young Ayush Badoni, all of 22, who has produced stunning counter attacks, taking on the likes of Mohammed Shami and Lockie Ferguson. As far as captain Rahul is concerned, Wankhede has been a happy hunting ground in the IPL. The opener has scored 399 runs in eight innings – including two half-centuries and a hundred – at a strike rate of 146.Live in the USA

You can watch the match live in the USA on ESPN+.

Royals are also a batting-heavy side, with the likes of Buttler, Sanju Samson and Shimron Hetmyer providing the fireworks. However, their weak link is the fifth bowling option which the Super Giants would be keen to exploit. The team has tried four different bowlers – including Nathan Coulter-Nile who sat out after getting injured in their opener- and all of them have leaked more than 10 runs an over. Navdeep Saini has been the expensive one, with an economy of 12 from six overs he has bowled so far.Despite managing to defend scores of 193 and 210 when other teams have largely struggled to do so this time, Royals might just start to worry about R Ashwin’s form as well, especially after his 21-run over against Royal Challengers which proved to be the turning point for them losing the game. The offspinner has conceded 90 runs in 12 overs so far, accounting for only a wicket. Como boss Cesc Fabregas handed Dele his Como debut on Saturday but saw the former Tottenham star sent off less than 10 minutes after coming on in a nightmare afternoon for the midfielder. Dele was shown a red card for a reckless challenge on Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Fabregas was critical of his new signing after the match.

Dele has had to be patient and wait for his chances at Como after arriving at the club back in December. He now faces more time on the sidelines due to suspension and has now explained what he was trying to do when he came on at San Siro.

WHAT DELE SAID

He told the club's media: "It was definitely a special feeling just because I know the journey. I'd been obviously focused on the game and trying to help the team. We were 2-1 down, so I wanted to go out there, I wanted to help, to score or help the team score, just play a part and turn the result around. For me it was clear what I was trying to do, it was a tactical foul, a tactical yellow, no malice or force, or recklessness in the challenge. You see the pictures after the game of my stud on his calf but there was no force or anything. If you pause the image of course it looks bad."

DID YOU KNOW?

Dele has signed an 18-month contract with Como and is confident he can achieve success with the Serie A side despite a disappointing start. He added: "I hope to achieve a lot of things, trying to achieve greatness because I think that's what Como is destined for and I want to be a part of that."

Liverpool make Omar Marmoush transfer decision as Salah talks stall

Liverpool have reportedly decided to change their stance regarding an “outstanding” player viewed as a potential Mohamed Salah replacement.

Targets eyed as Salah's Liverpool future in doubt

On Sunday, Salah was once again the Reds’ hero, scoring twice in their 3-2 win away to Southampton to take Arne Slot’s side eight points clear at the top of the Premier League.

It was the latest sign of the 32-year-old’s enduring importance to Liverpool, but he is yet to sign a new deal and has admitted that the club haven’t yet offered him a contract extension, saying: “We are almost in December and I haven’t received any offers yet to stay in the club. I’m probably more out than in. You know I have been in the club for many years. There is no club like this. But in the end, it is not in my hands.”

5 potential replacements for Mohamed Salah at Liverpool

Mohamed Salah has been linked with a move away from Liverpool, but who could be in line to succeed him at Anfield?

ByBarney Lane Oct 19, 2024

There is clearly concern about Salah departing at the end of this season, and numerous players have emerged as possible replacements for him, including Eintracht Frankfurt star Omar Marmoush. The Egyptian has had a superb start to the season, scoring 11 goals in as many Bundesliga appearances, as well as registering seven assists. However, he is far from the only wide attacking target.

Liverpool make U-turn on "outstanding" ace

According to a new report from GiveMeSport, Liverpool’s interest in Marmoush has now cooled, with the Reds seemingly making a U-turn regarding their interest in him.

The update states that “sources do not seem convinced” that the 25-year-old is the “top candidate” to replace Salah, with four other names also mentioned.

Bryan Mbeumo has been linked with a move to Liverpool following an impressive campaign for Brentford, as well as Lyon youngster Rayan Cherki. Napoli star Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Bayern Munich winger Leroy Sane are also thought to be on the Reds’ shortlist.

This does come as a surprise considering Marmoush has looked like a frontrunner to come in and bolster the attacking options at Slot’s disposal in recent months.

The Frankfurt ace’s end product this season has been sensational, with manager Dino Toppmoller under no illusions as to how important he is for his side, saying:

“He’s very difficult to defend due to his pace and how fast he can run deep. He can also sneak in from close range, exhibit a great touch and play some great balls. He’s in outstanding form at the moment, and he’s feeling comfortable. That’s the key to his success these days. He feels comfortable with this club and the group, and is thus a key component for us.”

If Liverpool and Michael Edwards feel there are stronger alternatives out there, they need to be trusted, with Mbeumo a player already proving himself in the Premier League.

More important than anything is Salah staying put, though, with the Egyptian King now surely one of greatest players in the history of the club, and looking as good as ever.
