Imagine him & Solanke: Spurs lining up swoop for "mind-blowing" £25m star

Tottenham Hotspur wrapped up their pre-season with a 3-2 defeat to Harry Kane and Bayern Munich in their last match before the Premier League campaign on Saturday.

Dejan Kulusevski found the back of the net twice, including a goal in the first minute of the match, but strikes from Thomas Muller, Dayot Upamecano, and Serge Gnabry secured the friendly win for the Bavarian outfit.

Ange Postecoglou will now have his full focus on the opening game against Leicester City, newly promoted out of the Championship, at the King Power stadium.

The Lilywhites missed out on Champions League football for this season, finishing below Aston Villa in the table, and a top-four finish may be in the Australian boss' sights this term.

Spurs have dipped into the market in an attempt to bolster their squad, with Lucas Bergvall, in a deal that was agreed earlier this year, Archie Gray, and Dominic Solanke all joining this summer.

The club's latest signing was Solanke on a permanent deal from Bournemouth, which has been reported to be worth £65m, to improve the team's attack.

Spurs eyeing new centre-forward

Despite that addition to the squad, Tottenham are reportedly in the market to add another centre-forward to the group to compete with Solanke.

According to Football Insider, Spurs have their eye on a possible swoop to sign Jonathan David from Ligue 1 side Lille before the end of the window.

Lille striker Jonathan David.

The report claims that Postecoglou is lining up a potential move for the Canada international as there is continued uncertainty over Richarlison's future at the club.

It adds that that Brazil international 'could' leave before the deadline passes but does not mention if there are any teams currently pursuing his services, though it does say that there are Saudi Pro League clubs monitoring his situation.

Football Insider also reveals that a number of Premier League teams are eyeing up David this summer, which means that the Lilywhites could face significant competition for his signature.

The report states that the Canadian marksman is now into the final 12 months of his contract with the French side and that has forced them to lower their value of him to £25m, which is why he has emerged as an attractive target for Spurs and other sides in the English top-flight.

If Tottenham do win the race to secure his services before the end of the summer then Postecoglou could have two excellent striker options, with him and Solanke.

What Dominic Solanke could bring to Tottenham

A £65m transfer fee will bring a degree of expectation with it for the English attacker, who has already proven himself to be a capable scorer at Premier League level.

Solanke has played in England for the majority of his career, bar a loan spell with Vitesse in his younger days, and does not have to adjust to the league or the country, as a signing – like David – coming in from abroad would have to do.

This means that Postecoglou and supporters may feel like he should have to hit the ground running this season, due to his experience in the league and his hefty price tag.

The one-time England international is coming off the back of his best season in the Premier League for the Cherries, having never managed more than six top-flight goals prior to the 2023/24 campaign.

Solanke plundered 19 goals in 38 appearances in the division last term and no Spurs player managed more than Heung-min Son's tally of 17 in the league.

This suggests that the £65m signing from Bournemouth could come in to provide a much-needed boost in the final third for Postecoglou, if he can continue his impressive form in a Tottenham shirt.

As you can see in the table above, Solanke consistently got himself into fantastic goalscoring positions, as evidenced by his 19.63 Expected Goals tally.

He did slightly underperform based on the quality of chances that came his way but that should not be a massive issue, given how slight the underperformance is, if he can continue to get into positions for those opportunities to fall his way.

Solanke could, therefore, be a fantastic attacking option for Spurs and the club could land another excellent striker to compete with him by signing David.

Why Spurs should sign Jonathan David

The 24-year-old star, who was hailed as "mind-blowing" for his country by talent scout Jacek Kulig, has been a prolific forward in France in recent years and could come in as an outstanding replacement for Richarlison.

If the Brazilian does move on, to the Pro League or elsewhere, then Spurs could improve their team by swooping to sign David in reaction to that.

The Lille sensation, who has scored 28 goals in 54 caps for Canada, has racked up 121 goals in 267 appearances in his club career to date, which speaks to his knack for scoring goals on a regular basis.

As you can see in the table above, David outperformed Richarlison as both a scorer and a creator of goals during the 2023/24 campaign, with eight more goals and twice as many 'big chances' created in their respective leagues.

The £25m-rated marksman had also fired in an outstanding 24 goals in 37 outings in Ligue 1 in the previous season, which means that he has scored 43 goals in the last two league campaigns combined.

Lille's Jonathan David

These statistics show that David has the ability to find the back of the net at an impressive rate at the top level, albeit he is unproven in the Premier League.

This means that Spurs could end up with two strikers in their squad – Solanke and David – who both scored 19 goals in a major European league last term, which could provide Postecoglou with all the firepower he needs to fight for a top four finish, and possibly even more.

Spurs can form the next Kane & Dele with "sensational" £19m Solanke partner

The talented youngster has a bright future ahead of him.

Scotland recall Adrian Neill, Michael Leask for Netherlands ODIs

Scotland have named a 14-man squad for their two-match ODI series away against Netherlands later this month, their first international fixtures since December 2019.There are three changes from the squad that travelled to the UAE for four Cricket World Cup League 2 fixtures, their most recent international engagement: Josh Davey and Michael Jones both miss out to fulfil county commitments with Somerset and Durham respectively, while Stuart Whittingham was forced to retire with a back injury in September.Seamers Gavin Main and Adrian Neill, neither of whom won a central contract last month, are both included, while Michael Leask also returns after missing out on the most recent squad. Tom Sole is the only centrally-contracted player to miss out, and is a non-travelling reserve along with Chris Greaves and Oli Hairs.Scotland returned to training in early April after a period on furlough during the latest Covid lockdown, and head coach Shane Burger said that he had been “impressed by how hard everyone has worked and the energy that we have in the squad at the moment”.”It’s just great to have cricket to look forward to,” Burger said. “After such a long period without any matches, it’s really important for the guys to get out there and play again. They’re absolutely raring to go. It’s the start of an important six months for us and I know we would like to go out and perform to the expectations that we have set ourselves and also play a brand of cricket that will excite our fans.”Netherlands are yet to name a squad, but it is unlikely that players will be withdrawn from county contracts for the series. As a result, there will be significant overlap with the ‘A’ team squad currently playing a three-match series in Ireland.Scotland squad: Richie Berrington, Dylan Budge, Kyle Coetzer (captain), Matthew Cross (wicketkeeper), Alasdair Evans, Michael Leask, Calum Macleod, Gavin Main, George Munsey, Adrian Neill, Safyaan Sharif, Hamza Tahir, Craig Wallace, Mark WattFixtures: 1st ODI – May 19, 2nd ODI – May 21 (both to be played in Rotterdam)

Liverpool waiting for Real Madrid to put £206,000-a-week star up for sale

Liverpool are interested in completing the signing of a "special" Champions League winner this summer, according to a fresh transfer rumour.

Liverpool transfer news

Reds supporters have understandably grown a little frustrated at the lack of transfer activity at Anfield this summer, with no new players coming in to date. Granted, Arne Slot has inherited a formidable squad from Jurgen Klopp, but that's not to say that fresh faces aren't also required.

Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi has emerged as the main target currently, with Liverpool seemingly pushing hard to get a deal over the line for Spain's Euro 2024 winner. For now, the La Liga club are holding firm, but the hope is that things change, allowing the Merseysiders to complete a significant signing in the middle of the park.

Away from Zubimendi-related news, the Reds are also believed to be interested in snapping up Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Marmadashvili, who could be viewed as Alisson's natural successor between the sticks. The former is keen on a move to Liverpool, but he could be loaned out initially, in order to remain first-choice somewhere.

Elsewhere, highly-rated young Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton is thought to be on Slot's radar, despite only moving to Selhurst Park from Blackburn Rovers in the January transfer window. He looks like a player with huge potential, so the idea of Liverpool acquiring his signature is mouthwatering.

Liverpool keen on signing "special" Real Madrid star

Now, according to reports in Spain, Liverpool remain interested in signing Real Madrid superstar Rodrygo this summer, having been linked with him in the past.

The report states that if the Reds get a sniff of the Brazilian wanting to depart the Spanish capital or being put up for sale then they will be there to try and snap him up, but will face competition from Manchester City.

Real Madrid forward Rodrygo.

It goes without saying that Rodrygo would be a spectacular signing for Liverpool, considering he is arguably one of the leading wide attacking players in world football at the moment.

The Brazil international often plays second fiddle to Vinicius Junior at Madrid, who earns more headlines, but he is a superb footballer in his own right, scoring 15 goals in La Liga and the Champions League combined last season, clinching glory in both competitions in the process. Meanwhile, the £206,000-a-week winger has been lauded by manager Carlo Ancelotti.

While Liverpool feel well-stocked in attack currently, the chance to sign Rodrygo should never be ignored, and he could even be seen as the eventual heir to Mohamed Salah on the right-hand side of the attack. At just 23, there is so much more to come, too.

He’s like Pogba: Man Utd in late talks to sign another CM after Ugarte

Manchester United are one of the most active clubs during transfer deadline day with the future of Jadon Sancho to solve before the window shuts at 11pm tonight.

The latest on that move is that the winger could join Chelsea, with the Blues having lodged a late bid to bring the player to Stamford Bridge.

Whether that move goes through could also depend on Raheem Sterling who has been linked with Arsenal today.

Outgoings aren't the only thing on the agenda for the Red Devils who are set to welcome Manuel Ugarte to Old Trafford.

He's not the only midfielder being linked with a move to United before things close tonight.

Man United could sign another midfielder after Ugarte

With the Uruguayan midfielder set to arrive from PSG on Friday, he will do so having been snapped up for a bumper £51m fee.

Unfortunately for supporters awaiting a quick glimpse of the tough-tackling maestro, they will have to wait, with United not getting the move done in time for him to be registered for their clash with Liverpool on Sunday afternoon.

Any further moves they make, therefore, will also not be able to play at the weekend. That's sad news if Chelsea gem Carney Chukwuemeka arrives in a late swoop.

According to The Guardian's Jacob Steinberg they have held talks regarding a move for the young 20-year-old.

How Chukwuemeka compares to Pogba

Well then, this would be quite the midfield, wouldn't it? Ugarte, Kobbie Mainoo and Chukwuemeka are a trio who could dominate in the centre of the park for some time to come.

Ugarte brings with him a no-nonsense approach to the game, ranking within the top 1% of midfielders in Europe's top five leagues for tackles per 90 minutes. Combine that with Mainoo's composed elegance in the centre of the park and Chukwuemeka's box-crashing skillset and you've got a finely balanced central area.

Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo

So good is that part of his game that some, including James Norris, one of the midfielder's teammates at youth level, have compared him to Pogba.

"He was a bit like Pogba" is the opinion of Norris, who evidently rates the youngster highly. Why is that comparison there?

Well, the following rave review from Villa insider, Charlie Jennings, does a lot of the talking: "Carney is an outstanding ball carrier from deep areas of the midfield. He is known for marauding, mind-boggling dribbles through tight areas and compliments this with a delightful array of passes.

“His dribbling ability and close relationship with the ball occupies defenders in a way we so productively saw during Grealish’s time at the club. His array of passes allows for delicate and precise combination play, often linking up well with his wide men while driving into those half spaces."

Sound like someone? Of course, it does. A certain Pogba. In his prime, the World Cup was elite in very similar areas, notably ranking among the best 4% of midfielders in the Premier League in 2018/19 for progressive passes and the best 11% for successful take-ons.

So, this could be quite the late signing then for United. It has the potential to create a salivating midfield combination for Erik ten Hag.

Last-gasp move: Man Utd keen on landing CF "upgrade" who's "like Ronaldo"

The Red Devils could well be in the market for a new centre-forward before the window closes…

Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres has addressed his future and acknowledged that playing for one of the biggest teams in Europe is one of his ambitions. His statement could be looked at as an eye wink to Premier League giants Manchester United, who have been heavily rumoured to be interested in the Sweden international's services after acquiring his former manager Ruben Amorim.

Gyokeres has become arguably the most sought-after forward in world football following his exploits with both Sporting CP and Sweden this season. The 26-year-old has scored an outrageous 34 goals in 27 games for club and country in the ongoing campaign, attracting attention from Manchester United, Barcelona, and Arsenal over a potential summer switch in 2025. The frontrunners are, however, the Red Devils. Amorim helped Gyokeres unlock his potential at Sporting CP, and the Man Utd boss will be licking his lips over a reunion with his former player as he aims to oversee a major overhaul at Old Trafford next summer.

WHAT VIKTOR GYOKERES SAID

"We will see. There are many rumours circulating, but we are in the middle of the season, there are still many months left," Gyokeres admitted when talking about his future to Sportbladet (h/t MARCA). "We will see when the time comes what will happen. Playing in one of the best teams in Europe, that is the objective."

£200,000-a-week Man Utd winger’s deadline day exit called off, he’s staying

The exit of a £200,000-a-week Manchester United player is now not expected to happen this summer, according to a fresh update from journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Latest on Man Utd exits on deadline day

The future of Jadon Sancho has dominated deadline day from a Red Devils perspective, as he potentially looks to seal a move away from Old Trafford.

The Englishman has never got going in a United shirt since completing a big-money move from Borussia Dortmund back in 2021, even being loaned back to the Bundesliga side last season. Chelsea are believed to be making late efforts to sign the 24-year-old, as the Blues look to seal yet another signing.

Jadon Sancho in action for Man United in the Premier League.

However, Erik ten Hag provided an update on Sancho's future during his pre-Liverpool press conference on Friday, saying he expects him to remain at United: "As far as I know, I expect him to stay, yeah. We are happy with him. We need a good squad. We have to play many games until January. After the break we play every third day so we need options."

Away from all things Sancho, a key update has now emerged regarding the future of another Old Trafford ace.

£200,000-a-week Man Utd winger set to stay

According to Romano on X, Antony is expected to stay at Manchester United this summer, with a loan move to Real Betis off the table after the player decided he wants to stay and fight for his place at Old Trafford.

There is no question that Antony has been a disappointing signing for United overall, with a lack of end product from his right-sided attacking role something that he has received plenty of credit for. The £200,000-a-week Brazilian has only bagged 11 goals and five assists in 83 appearances for United, which compared to the likes of rivals Mohamed Salah and Bukayo Saka in his position, is simply not good enough for the Red Devils to close the gap.

That being said, Antony does still possess quality and is only 24 years of age, with Rio Ferdinand describing him as a "threat" and Danny Murphy also praising him last season: "Antony was running in behind and making different types of runs today. There’s been a lot of discontent with him in the first couple of games, but his end product, picking passes better, he was much more decisive in his play today."

There is plenty of competition for places in wide areas at United now, including Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho and Amad Diallo, so now is the time for Antony to find another gear, or the calls for him to move on next summer are only likely to become more deafening.

Wickets tumble at Cardiff, as debutant wicketkeeper plays role in key scalp

Yorkshire 69 for 4 (Root 34*, Bess 16*) trail Glamorgan 149 (Brook 3-13, Patterson 3-27) by 80 runs Anybody who googled “Harry Duke” on May 14, 2021 would have found Prince Harry expounding on his newly-held belief in genetic pain. Search the scorecard and there was not a run, catch or stumping to be seen. It is fair to remark that Yorkshire’s debutant wicketkeeper has yet to capture the public eye.But Harry Duke – that’s the teenage wicketkeeper from Wakefield and not the man sixth in line for the throne – can claim nevertheless to have made an immediate impact on his first day in the job, by playing a small but important role at the start of the Ashes phoney war.”The battle that will decide the Ashes: Root v Labuschagne” was how one national newspaper billed Yorkshire’s visit to Glamorgan. Only Joe Root has made more Test runs than Marnus Labuschagne since he played in his first Ashes Test as a concussion replacement for Steve Smith at Lord’s nearly two years ago. If Ashes series can ever be determined by a single match-up, it’s a fair enough theory.Labuschagne only managed 10 from 18 balls for Glamorgan before he fell lbw to Ben Coad, displaying his frustration at his error with an incredulous shake of the head and a route march to short leg and back. But that error might not have happened had Duke not dared to stand up to the stumps to Coad, force Labuschagne to abandon his method of batting well outside his crease, and contributed to the malfunction.Jonny Tattersall, who had been dropped to give Duke his chance, also stands up at times to Coad, who clocks around 80mph. But this was the first morning of a debut on a devilishly difficult pitch which offered the bowlers swing, seam and some uneven bounce. This was a 19-year-old on debut. This was a world-class batsman who might just nick one that would be easier to take standing back than standing up.Related

His boldness brought to mind the pre-match comments by Martyn Moxon, Yorkshire’s director of cricket, when he reflected on the fact that the match would be televised. “Harry is a real competitor, a real scrapper and a battler, and he’ll thrive on that. He’s the kind of character who will relish the stage.”No need to fret unduly then, about the damage that could be caused by giving Duke an unexpected headline then, even in Yorkshire where “too much too soon” was once the catchphrase of every club chairman in the county.Labuschagne is having a lean time in this challenging English Spring. He has talked about the need to adjust his technique again for county pitches after becoming a little square-on to find more run-scoring opportunities against an India attack that bowled straight to him. His anxiety was perhaps illustrated before he had scored when he was sent back after Dom Bess had pulled off a fine stop at cover and would have been run out by a direct hit.Jimmy Anderson, who also dismissed him cheaply for Lancashire last week on their first-ever meeting, pointedly said with the Ashes in mind that it was “nice to get the first blow in” and then probably messed with Labuschagne’s mind even more by adding: “It’s like when you see a girl at a club and you try to play it cool; you want her to be impressed.”Joe Root endured in tough conditions•Getty Images

Root’s judicious unbeaten 34, by contrast, was comfortably the outstanding innings on a taxing batting day in which 14 wickets fell, so enabling the game to stay “live” after the loss of the first day to rain. Yorkshire are still 80 behind on first innings with six wickets left, aware that the world could collapse around their ears at any moment. Kent were dismissed for 72 in the last match on this ground and conditions can’t have been much different.Glamorgan were 82 for 7 immediately after lunch, total calamity prevented by David Lloyd and Billy Root, backed up by some tasty late-order flourishes. Lloyd, advanced up the order to opener this season, still drove freely during his 31, and survived missed slip catches by Root, at fourth, and Brook, at third, in reaching 10. Root’s was difficult; Brook’s was simpler, but the England captain (uncommonly) was to his right as well as the ball and these things can have an effect. This was the day that Billy Root was awarded his county cap, a nice touch with Joe available for the brotherly fist bump after the ceremony at the tea interval. He has developed into a decent county player in his own right and, after he reached 23, it took a smart catch in his follow-through by Brook to remove him off a leading edge.Brook, Yorkshire’s fifth seamer, collected 3 for 15 with his medium-paced inswing, Chris Cooke and Dan Douthwaite also falling lbw. Whenever Yorkshire’s attack lost its discipline the skipper, Steven Patterson, restored it. There were three wickets for him, too. Lloyd inadvisably left one which came back to hit his off stump and though the in-form Kiran Carlson got off the mark with his signature square drive, he then edged one that bounced a bit to first slip.Yorkshire subsided to 36 for 4 in return, three of them to Michael Neser, whose presence enhances Glamorgan’s already competitive edge. Lyth’s dismissal owed everything to a springing catch at square leg by Carlson, Ballance cut to third man in somewhat giveaway fashion and Neser no doubt observed Brook’s pronounced, unbalanced trigger movement across his stumps and thought “I’ll have a bit of that”.The day on ended with both commentators, Robert Croft and Eddie Bevan, covering an entire over in Welsh. At the end of the over the umpires decided enough was enough and called off play early. The two incidents were not thought to be connected.
