A second South Africa player has tested positive for Covid-19 ahead of the white-ball series against England. The player has been removed from the team’s biosecure base in Cape Town, taking the number of players self-isolating from the squad to four.According to CSA, none of the 24-man squad came into contact with the player, as they have been operating under social distancing rules since arrival. As a result, South Africa have cancelled their intra-squad training match, which was scheduled for Saturday. Although CSA did not go into detail about whether this will affect the series, which is due to start next Friday, it gave assurances to England, who have returned negative results all round, that communication lines will be kept open.ALSO READ: Jordan sticks to his strengths as England T20I record beckonsEngland have also confirmed that their own intra-squad match, a 40-over match at Newlands on Saturday, will go ahead as planned.”Team management and Cricket South Africa are in close communication with their counterparts from the ECB to ensure full transparency and the most responsible plan of action going forward,” a CSA statement read. The names of the affected players will not be released, in keeping with doctor-patient confidentiality norms and no replacement players will be called up.On Wednesday, CSA announced that one player had tested positive from the first round of tests, conducted on Tuesday, and two others had been in close contact with the player. The player was put in separate accommodation and the close contacts isolated. A second round of tests on Thursday revealed that another player had also tested positive. The players will be tested again next week, before the series starts. The effects of Covid-19 have been felt on South African cricket since its attempts to resume in July. The exhibition 3TC match saw several players pull out for reasons related to the pandemic. When the domestic season started two weeks’ ago, the Warriors franchise had to withdraw six players from their squad after two tested positive and four others were close contacts. On Thursday, South Africa coach Mark Boucher said sport would have to learn to live with the virus, and the most important thing was taking care of players’ physical and mental health.

David Warner will be asked about opening partner, but selectors confident Will Pucovski 'has the game'

David Warner will be sounded out about his opening partner for the Test series against India, but national selector Trevor Hohns has no doubt that Will Pucovski would be ready for the role despite just two matches in that position in first-class cricket. Those two games have, of course, brought the small matter of two double-centuries – 255 not out and 202 – in recent weeks which have propelled Pucovski to the brink of a Test debut. The big decision for the selectors is whether he now replaces the incumbent Joe Burns, who was part of the side all last summer and has a good partnership record alongside Warner: the pair averages 50.55 from 27 innings opening the batting.ALSO READ: Will Pucovski, Cameron Green and Sean Abbott named in Australia’s Test squad“Of course we talk to David, he’s a very senior player, he’s very experienced and it’s important he’s comfortable as well, provided we are, of course, with the person he opens with,” Hohns said. “It goes a long way in forming an opening partnership. You have to be comfortable with your partner and we certainly do consult players on such issues.”While insisting that the decision between Burns and Pucovski still had to be made – with the Australia A matches shaping as the deciders – Hohns was confident that from both a technical point and regarding his mental wellbeing Pucovski was ready for Test cricket.David Warner congratulates Joe Burns on his fifty•Getty Images

“Will’s in fantastic form. He’s not just in good form, he’s in great form. I think that’s undeniable,” he said. As far as Will goes, and that goes with all our players, we check their health and wellbeing. Not just Will but all of our players. Will’s good to go.”He has the game to handle that [opening] as we’ve seen already. Okay it’s only a couple of games but prior to that he’s been batting at No. 3, he certainly has the technique to handle the opening position if required.”One of the other questions facing the selectors is how to manage the all-format players through the six limited-overs matches which start the tour at the end of November. It is expected that those returning from the IPL – especially Warner, Steven Smith and Pat Cummins – may be rested at some point, but Hohns conceded there was a balancing act to appease broadcasters.”We’re currently working through that right now and waiting for the IPL players in particular to return home,” he said. “We are working on that at the moment in the background and, of course, we have to take into account the broadcasters and make sure if we are going to give a player a break or players a break, they’re not all missing from the one game.”While the majority of Australia’s Test squad have been part of the Sheffield Shield hub in Adelaide this week, those returning from the IPL will not have any long-form cricket before the Test series and instead will prepare with nets in Adelaide while the second Australia A game is going on in Sydney.

As Arsenal and Manchester City both faltered on Saturday, Liverpool had the perfect opportunity to capitalise. The Reds found themselves in a precarious position after Brighton’s Ferdi Kadioglu scored a well-placed goal, giving the visitors a deserved lead. Recognising the need for swift action, Slot made significant adjustments, introducing Curtis Jones and Luis Diaz and transitioning to a more aggressive formation.

The substitutions injected new energy, allowing Liverpool to unleash their full force on the visitors. The pressure paid off as Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah scored in quick succession, turning the game in Liverpool’s favour as the passionate home crowd at Anfield witnessed Slot’s tactical mastery that turned a potential setback into a valuable three points. Liverpool had already edged past Brighton in a hard-fought Carabao Cup encounter at the Amex Stadium earlier in the week and this is the second time in a row that the Merseyside club came out on top.

Could Kyle Jamieson's stellar home summer spark IPL interest?

‘I’m sure a few New Zealand coaches there have got their eye on him’

Deivarayan Muthu07-Jan-2021Everyone wanted a piece of Kyle Jamieson in New Zealand’s international home summer, with the Bay Oval crowd even standing up to sing ‘Happy birthday’ to him when he turned 26. While he had a dream first year in Test cricket, Jamieson also made his T20I debut this home summer, taking three wickets in four matches at an economy rate of 7.75. So, do the IPL franchises want a piece of Jamieson as well?Gary Stead, who has overseen Jamieson’s progress from his domestic side Canterbury to the national team, reckoned that the presence of New Zealand coaches in the IPL might be “one of the advantages” for him. Brendon McCullum, the Kolkata Knight Riders head coach, and Stephen Fleming, the Chennai Super Kings head coach, have also commentated on the 6ft 8in quick for Spark Sport. Meanwhile, Mike Hesson, the former New Zealand coach, works with the Royal Challengers Bangalore as their team director.Related

Jamieson hits heights with absurdly brilliant beginning

Ferguson bides his time even as Jamieson jumps Test queue

“See, I’m not sure. Maybe they [the franchises] will [come knocking at his door] and maybe they won’t. Sometimes, it’s a bit of the luck of the draw with the IPL and how you get in there,” Stead said of Jamieson’s IPL prospects. “I guess one of the advantages is a few New Zealand coaches that are head coaches there as well that I’m sure have got their eye on Kyle as well as other people in our set-up as well.”Earlier this season, Jamieson’s team-mate Tim Seifert, the wicketkeeper-opener, had also caught the attention of Fleming who told Spark Sport: “There’s a team in yellow [Chennai Super Kings] that might have a look at you as well. Not just Brendon’s [Brendon McCullum’s] team, there are other teams out there!”Even before Jamieson made his T20I debut, Shane Bond, who is part of the Sydney Thunder and the Mumbai Indians backroom, foresaw an IPL opportunity for him.”I’m looking forward to see how he goes in T20, and there’s always opportunities in the T20 game as well,” Bond had said. “With another IPL around the corner, who knows what can happen. Things in this game can change pretty quick, so looking forward to seeing what he can do.”Jamieson’s USP is his towering frame that enables him to bounce out batsmen, but he has shown that he can be just as threatening by pitching the ball up and swinging it both ways. In all T20 cricket, he holds the record for the fifth-best figures, having claimed 6 for 7 for Canterbury Kings against Auckland Aces in January 2019. All up, he has 49 wickets in 33 T20s at an average of 19.81 and economy rate of 7.96.Jamieson said after the Christchurch Test that he had honed his inswinger during the winter, and the day after that game, Stead delivered a glowing appraisal of him, saying “the world could be his oyster”.”I mean it’s just keeping him grounded as well. We all know he’s got some great attributes and some great skills and who knows the world could be oyster his with what’s ahead and what’s coming up,” Stead said. “But, at the end of the day, he’s still a cricketer and he’s one of our boys when he gets together with us and we treat him that way. He’s got everything there in front of him, but hopefully he stays fit and he will be a big part of New Zealand cricket I’m sure.”

WHAT NEXT FOR TEN HAG AND UNITED?

Ten Hag insisted at the end of last season that he would simply go to another club to win trophies should he be sacked. United, meanwhile, must begin their search for his replacement, though they have been told reported target Xavi has no interest in taking on the job, while their former target Thomas Tuchel is out of reach after being appointed England manager.

Man City make first move to sign "brilliant" £70m star ahead of Liverpool

As Pep Guardiola looks to complete the near-impossible task of improving a side who have just won a fourth consecutive Premier League title, Manchester City have reportedly registered their interest in one particular Liverpool target.

Man City transfer news

Man City's main concern so far this summer has been the future of star players, with both Kevin De Bruyne and Ederson linked to the Saudi Pro League. After winning the treble in the 2022/23 campaign and following that up with a fourth Premier League title in a row, it could be argued that certain players believe their work in England is done, especially as City wait to find out the verdict on their 115 FFP charges.

That said, even as major consequences potentially await, the Citizens have been linked with several stars this summer, including the likes of Joshua Kimmich and Jamal Musiala. The latter would be a particularly impressive addition if De Bruyne does choose to leave for Saudi Arabia in the coming months. The Bayern Munich star enjoyed an excellent Euro 2024 and may yet make his mark at the Etihad alongside another reported target.

According to Football Insider in a report since relayed by Chronicle Live, Manchester City have registered their interest in Anthony Gordon as they join the race to sign the Newcastle United winger this summer.

Valued at a reported £70m by the Magpies, City join Liverpool in the battle for the Englishman, who seemingly had his head turned by the Reds before they were unable to reach an agreement with those at St James' Park.

Man City want to beat Man Utd to signing of "incredible" 16 y/o this summer

He is shining at academy level for club and country.

Of course, now that Newcastle have passed the PSR deadline unscathed, they're in a far healthier negotiating position. When the Premier League champions come calling, however, they usually get what they want – and things could be no different when it comes to Gordon.

"Brilliant" Gordon could thrive under Guardiola

Whether it's been Raheem Sterling, Leroy Sane or, more recently, Jeremy Doku, wide players tend to leave their mark under Guardiola, and Gordon would be no different. He finally burst into life at Newcastle last season to earn such interest, which could leave him with quite the decision to make this summer. Whilst his reported £70m price tag isn't exactly cheap, money is rarely an obstacle for those at the Etihad.

Anthony Gordon.

Even before Gordon stepped up to become the player who scored 12 goals and assisted a further 11 in all competitions last season, Eddie Howe seemed to be well aware of the player that Newcastle had on their hands, praising his mentality.

The former Bournemouth boss said via Chronicle Live in April 2023: "He's in a much better place now. He used the international break to get his ankle right. He came back ahead of schedule so really pleased with that. He's got a brilliant mentality and I think he's a top player in the making."

A player who looks destined for the top, Gordon could be left with the biggest decision of his career so far this summer.

Liverpool hold concrete talks to sell £20m player who "can do everything"

As the Arne Slot era begins at Anfield, Liverpool appear eager to move on a highly rated talent in order to free up funds for new signings.

Reds set for midfield shake up this summer

The big issue for the incoming Dutchman will be reinforcing the Reds' midfield. Despite the arrival of the likes of Ryan Gravenberch and Wataru Endo last season, much of the Anfield faithful will agree that their side have failed to replace Fabinho, who left Merseyside the previous summer.

Slot must axe Liverpool sensation who Van Dijk thinks is "world-class"

FSG must cash in on this £35m-rated Anfield star this summer.

The name currently linked with a move to Anfield is Bayern Munich's Joshua Kimmich. The Germany star is regarded as one of the best in the world in his position and there is no doubt that he would be an excellent addition to the Reds' midfield.

Joining Kimmich on FSG's wishlist is Adrien Rabiot. The Frenchman is a free agent after departing Juventus this summer and would be a cheaper alternative to Kimmich, who would likely fetch a hefty fee.

With fresh faces in the middle of the park clearly a priority, it appears that one midfielder is set to be shown the door at Anfield this summer.

Liverpool look to move on promising midfielder

As first reported on the X account of Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg, Liverpool have held concrete talks with German side RB Leipzig over young midfielder Tyler Morton. The Bundesliga outfit are reportedly pushing for a loan with an option to buy, however the Reds are eager to secure a permanent move for the England youth international.

This latest development follows news that Liverpool had placed a price tag of £20 million on Morton as the 21-year old academy product looks set to become the latest player to depart Anfield this summer. For his part, the youngster can "really imagine" himself in a Leipzig shirt, says Plettenberg.

The news of Morton's sale may come as a shock to some of the Anfield faithful with many fans envisioning the midfielder getting the opportunity to break into the Reds' first team after a successful loan spell with Hull City last season. Morton featured in 39 of the Tigers' league games as Hull fell agonisingly short of the playoff places.

Tyler Morton for Hull City

The young midfielder also contributed three goals and five assists during his time in East Yorkshire as the Tigers finished seventh in the Championship table. It was his performances in black and amber that caught the eye of his former boss Liam Rosenior, who sang the midfielder's praises in an interview on the club's website back in November 2023.

“Some of his play, honestly, he can do everything as a midfield player. When we were recruiting in the summer, he fits completely into the way we want to play.

“The beauty with Tyler is he can play deep and he can be just as effective there, but what we’ve seen in training is he can create and score goals."

With Morton clearly well regarded at the MKM Stadium, it may come as a shock to see the midfielder not get a chance to prove his worth at his parent club. Despite this, if Liverpool are to receive the £20 million fee that has been reported, it could go some way to bringing in some of the Reds' top targets this summer.

India await Mohammed Shami's scan results after painful blow to right forearm

Shami was forced to retire hurt and went for scans after the game

India are awaiting Mohammed Shami’s scan results and news on his further participation in the series, after the bowler retired hurt during their second innings. At the post-match presentation, captain Virat Kohli said that Shami had been in pain and could “hardly lift” his bowling arm after being struck by a Pat Cummins bouncer. Shami has gone for scans and his status will be known after the results.Shami came in at No. 11 and retired hurt during India’s dramatic first-session collapse, after he tried to evade a short ball, backing away to the leg side. The ball followed him down leg side and he was caught in a tangle and struck on his right forearm. He was visibly uncomfortable and the team doctor was out immediately to tend to the blow. After a dose of pain-relief spray and a massage, Shami’s forearm was strapped up by the doctor and he looked set to resume batting. But after taking his mark at the crease, Shami once again took a short walk towards the leg side before calling the doctor back on to the field. After a long chat, he went off the field to end the India innings.”He is going for a scan. He was in a lot of pain, could hardly lift his arm,” Kohli said. “Probably in the evening we’ll know exactly what is happening.”The next Test is a week away but an injury to Shami would severely dent India, who were reduced to their lowest-ever Test total in Adelaide, and will be without Kohli for the rest of the series. With Rohit Sharma also not available till the third Test – he is in quarantine after landing in Australia – and Ishant Sharma already missing the tour, Shami’s absence would leave India without four senior players as they look to bounce back in the series.Shami is India’s premiere fast bowler alongside Jasprit Bumrah and had been rested through half of India’s limited-overs series at the start of the tour, in order to be ready for the four Tests. The two fast bowlers in India’s squad who can replace him are Navdeep Saini and Mohammed Siraj, who are both uncapped in Tests.
