Celtic interested in winning five-team race to sign striker Tommy Conway

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers has earmarked a couple of areas to strengthen before the close of the window and his side are now reportedly keen on an exciting player to bolster the Hoops' Scottish Premiership title bid.

Celtic set for busy closing period of the window…

Nicolas Kuhn has been the only arrival for Celtic so far this window as Rodgers and the Hoops carefully plot their next move between now and the end of the month.

Sky Sports News reporter Anthony Joseph has given some insight into where the Hoops may look next in the transfer market, stating via social media platform X:

Loan targets may be the aim for Celtic as they evaluate not only availability but also affordability. The Daily Record claim that several options from the Premier League have been reviewed as Rodgers looks to provide support to Kyogo Furuhashi, who has become the sole surviving forward at Parkhead for the next few weeks amid Oh Hyeon-gyu and Daizen Maeda's involvement at the Asian Cup.

One familiar name that continues to be mentioned in the left-back position is Liverpool defender Owen Beck and he could move north of the border once again before the deadline if Jurgen Klopp deems that he has appropriate cover in that position amid recent injury concerns involving Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas.

Another option has now come out of the blue that Celtic could look to target to beef up their options in attack, according to a fresh report.

Celtic in race to sign Tommy Conway…

According to Football Insider, Celtic have emerged as suitors for Bristol City striker Tommy Conway and could be involved in a five-way tussle with Rangers, Nottingham Forest, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Brentford all in the race to land the Scotland Under-21 international.

Over the last couple of weeks, the Taunton-born striker has boosted his growing reputation by scoring twice against West Ham United as the Robins progressed against David Moyes' side during the week at Ashton Gate.

Tommy Conway for Bristol City.

Labelled "excellent" by former boss Nigel Pearson, the 21-year-old has notched eight goals in 22 appearances this campaign despite missing seven weeks due to injury issues (Conway statistics – Transfermarkt).

Celtic look to be in the market to add a new striker before the window closes; however, it is unclear whether Conway would be an affordable target or if Bristol City would allow the emerging star to leave in mid-season, making this one to watch.

Cameron Bancroft gets warm applause after unbeaten 92 seals draw for Durham at Lancashire

Edwards: ‘Though his form may be too late to get him in the Ashes squad, he looks like a Test opener’

Paul Edwards03-Jul-2019

Cameron Bancroft leads Durham out•Getty Images

This day began with Dane Vilas driving Chris Rushworth through the off side, the ball skimming across the perfect Cumbrian outfield to the spectators at the Powell End; but it also began with swifts swooping and banking in the blue air; and with Rough Fell sheep, motionless on the slope of Winder below Canada Wood. This day ended with Cameron Bancroft taking a single off Rob Jones to move his score to 92; but it also ended with the players shaking hands on the draw and with Bancroft receiving the warmest of ovations as he returned to the Knowles Pavilion; and with darkly beautiful shadows on Baugh Fell behind him; and with a series of fond partings after four days filled with summer’s green perfections.”Farewell you northern hills, you mountains all goodbye,” wrote Ewan MacColl. “Moorlands and stony ridges, crags and peaks, goodbye…Days in the sun and the tempered wind and the air like wine / And you drink and you drink till you’re drunk on the joy of living.”Yes, we have been spoilt; yes, we have been absurdly lucky. It is not only the farmers who have made hay when the sun shone these last four days. The cricketers have been fortunate, too, and perhaps it was fitting that both sets of players were content when they left Sedbergh this rich evening. Both Rushworth and Nathan Rimmington paid the ground and the occasion warm compliments. “It’s like a postcard wherever you look,” added Bancroft.Rimmington had a particular reason to be content. He collected career-best match figures of 8 for 116 when he took two of the last three Lancashire wickets to fall this morning, but by then Durham needed 304 to win in a minimum of 79 overs. Few folk fancied their chances of doing it. Then fewer still were bullish when Alex Lees was bowled playing no shot to Saqib Mahmood and Gareth Harte lost his off and middle stumps when beaten for pace and lowish bounce by the same bowler. Bancroft then cover-drove Keaton Jennings for an exquisite boundary and we had lunch, an interval enlivened by bizarre rural conversations.”How’s that lad, Anderson?” asked a spectator. “Not good,” we replied. “He’s struggling with a tight calf.” “Oh, I know what that’s like,” “Really, are you an athlete of some sort?” “No, I’m a vet.”We drifted into our afternoon’s cricket and it began badly for Durham when Jack Burnham played no shot to the sixth ball after the resumption and lost his middle stump to Graham Onions. But the next 90 minutes belonged to the visitors as Bancroft grimly risked the possibility of injury by getting forward whenever he could, thus negating movement and at least limiting the impact of low bounce. Graham Clark was similarly obdurate and even some Lancashire supporters found fruition in the prospect of a full day’s cricket. Sedbergh has offered an infinitude of peace these midsummer days.Sedbergh Cricket Ground•Getty Images

Some watched from the Evans End, where, on the public footpath beyond the ground’s perimeter, folk could sit on benches and watch cricket without paying a penny. It has been christened the Yorkshire End. On the field Lancashire needed a wicket and an attack lacking both James Anderson (calf) and Liam Livingstone (side) was flagging. Then a ball from Bohannon bounced low and took out Clark’s off stick. Five overs later, Onions, bowling round the wicket to encourage uncertainty about line, had the left-handed Liam Trevaskis caught by Jones at slip. Durham were 122 for 5 at tea and we looked forward to a full evening session.Yes, we have been privileged. Yes, Sedbergh is a privileged environment but they have shared their wonderful facilities with the cricket community this week. And they have done so with glorious generosity. Cricket has mattered here for nearly two centuries. Take the school’s late 19th century “Cricket Song”.If you’ve England in your veins,And can take a little pains,In the sunny summer weather, when to stay indoors is sin,If you’ve got a bit of muscle,And enjoy a manly tussle,Then go and put your flannels on and let the fun begin!, in which those lines appear, was published in 1896 and looks forward to Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee the following year. The subtext – maybe main text – is that of the cultivation of an imperial ethos. The illustration opposite “Cricket Song” shows Sedbergh boys playing cricket in the shadow of Winder and then men playing the game in some unnamed foreign clime with the Union flag flying prominently. These days the school is more concerned to provide the counties with players. Harry Brook, Jordan Clark, George Hill all learned their cricket on the square where Bancroft’s resilience reached new heights this final evening. After Ned Eckersley played on to Mahmood he was joined by Ben Raine and the pair saw Durham through the final 22 overs.Lancashire’s bowlers became provoked into experimentation, at one stage placing four short extra covers for Raine. But nothing budged him and nothing shifted Bancroft either. The West Australian batted for 288 minutes and faced 191 balls today. He has now scored 332 runs in his last four innings and though his form may be too late to get him in the Ashes squad, he looks like a Test opener. The rest of us must soon shift ourselves this perfect evening. The shadows are now on Winder and their patterns change with every passing moment. There is brass band music playing in the hospitality tent: hymns and tunes of glory. The players are long gone and in half an hour or so the rest of cricket’s caravan must join them. But we are changed. No one who has spent the last four days at Sedbergh could be otherwise. This little world and its perfect cricket ground will stay with us. There are children playing cricket on the outfield; there is drinking in the tent; there is new light on Baugh Fell. And enfolding it all is the joy of living.

Martin impressed: Southampton youngster is now training with first-team

A rising Southampton youngster is now training with the first team, and manager Russell Martin is thought to be impressed by what he's seen.

Southampton’s Championship form

The Saints have been in fine form under Martin for a number of months now, with their last Championship defeat coming way back in September.

A 103-year club record was broken by Southampton last month when they made it 21 games unbeaten with a 3-1 win over Swansea City, and Martin’s side are now occupying the second automatic promotion spot behind Leicester City. Leeds United are closely behind the Saints, though, so it could be a dramatic final few months of the season.

Martin has actually used 36 different players during the current campaign, and it looks as if one defender who hasn’t featured could soon get his chance in the matchday squad.

Southampton teenager training with first-team

Talking to The Daily Echo, Martin revealed that young defender Nico Lawrence is training with the first team after a January move away failed to materialise. Martin has been impressed, saying: "Nico is back in the building now after his loan and there was a decision made on him. There were a few clubs interested in taking him on loan but he has been out of the building for a while and I have not seen much of him.

"I really like what I have seen in the short period of a few days that we have trained. I sat down and had a conversation with him. It was with Olly Lancashire, Carl Martin and Jason Wilcox as well, and I want to see more of him so he will train with us every day.

"He has an opportunity to force himself into the squad and to show us what he has got. He will be better for these four months. He has been out for a while so we want to get him in the best condition he has ever been in."

Southampton's St. Mary's Stadium.

Lawrence gained his first taste of senior football out on loan with Torquay United last season and was voted the club’s Young Player of the Year. He was praised by Gulls boss Gary Johnson, who said 12 months ago: “He’s got all the attributes, and I can see why Southampton think highly of him. We’re helping him – (Aaron) Downes's centre-half work that he does – and the lad is proper up for learning more.

"He’s enjoying the experience of playing in the first team regularly, with pressure, with managers screaming at them at half time and at the end, because that doesn’t always happen at the Under-21s – it’s more a development – so there’s a lot more on this, and he’s coped on and off the pitch really well.”

The 20-year-old was then sent out on loan to Colchester United last summer but only managed to make four League Two appearances before suffering an injury. Capable of playing as a holding midfielder as well as in his natural centre-back role, Lawrence will now have the chance to break into Martin’s plans for the remainder of the season.

Phil Hay confirms Leeds “animal” is set to leave Elland Road for good

After Leeds United were relegated from the Premier League to the Championship at the end of last season, they sent a raft of players out on loan to top-flight sides across Europe.

Among them was Jack Harrison, who capitalised on a clause in his contract that allowed him to make a temporary exit in the event of the Whites' demotion. Everton will have the option to buy the wide player at the end of the season.

One loanee who's definitely played his last game for Leeds is Robin Koch, who was allowed to join Eintracht Frankfurt even though he was in the final year of his deal. Frankfurt have since reached a pre-contract agreement with Koch and will sign him on a free transfer this summer.

Elsewhere, Roma plan to exercise their option to purchase Diego Llorente, who's been playing for the Italian side since last January. They will then look to sell the Spanish defender on for a profit.

AS Roma's loan defenderDiego Llorente.

Luis Sinisterra made a swift return to the top-flight with Bournemouth, having joined Leeds from Feyenoord for an undisclosed fee just last summer. Sinisterra played 22 games in all competitions in 2022/23, scoring seven goals but missing 16 matches with three separate injuries.

The Colombian would appear four more times for the Whites at the start of this season before his move to the Vitality Stadium, and he scored in a 4-3 win over promotion rivals Ipswich.

Sinisterra now heading to Bournemouth permanently

Now, as reported by The Athletic's Phil Hay, Bournemouth will sign Sinisterra from Leeds on a permanent transfer. The loan agreement included an option to buy for around £20m, and it seems that they will exercise it.

An announcement is likely to be made on Friday, with Leeds satisfied that they've avoided a loss. Bournemouth winger Jaidon Anthony is currently on loan at Elland Road, and it remains to be seen whether he ends up making a permanent move in the other direction.

Leeds make good money on "animal" Sinisterra

Dubbed an "animal" by international team-mate Juan Cuadrado, Sinisterra has clearly impressed Andoni Iraola and Bournemouth this season. He may only have started four Premier League games, with most of his appearances (11) coming from the bench, but he's taken his opportunities when they've arrived.

The 24-year-old has notched six goal contributions (three goals, three assists) in 17 games across all competitions so far, doing so at an impressive rate of one every 114 minutes.

ByBen Browning Feb 9, 2024

£20m represents a good return for Daniel Farke, who may have just seen his transfer budget for the summer window increase handily. He'll be hoping, of course, that Leeds spend the off-season preparing for a return to the Premier League.

Players said they didn't get to talk to the coach – BCB president

Nazmul Hassan alleged that Rhodes did not push the players hard during a pre-World Cup preparation camp in Leicester, and was not involved in strategic matters

Mohammad Isam24-Jul-2019Nazmul Hassan, president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board, has come down heavily on Steve Rhodes’ one-year tenure as coach of the national team. Hassan alleged that Rhodes did not seem serious enough about winning as a coach, did not push the players hard during a pre-World Cup preparation camp in Leicester, and was not involved in strategic matters. Rhodes did not respond to ESPNcricinfo when contacted about these allegations.Rhodes was appointed Bangladesh coach in June 2018, with his contract set to run until next year’s T20 World Cup. However, the BCB and Rhodes parted ways earlier this month, following the team’s eighth-place finish at the 2019 World Cup in England.Hassan said that the players had told him they did not get to speak to Rhodes, and that he did not address team strategies.”We arranged for a practice camp before the World Cup, but nobody came. There was a cultural mismatch. He assumed that every player will practice on their own, but since our players heard it was optional, no one turned up. So there was no use making all that arrangement spending so much money.””I saw the changes [in the style of coaching] when I was in Dubai for the Asia Cup final. We saw that things have changed. We waited. The players have told me continuously – after the New Zealand tour and also during the World Cup – that they don’t get to speak to the coach.”He only lands in the team meeting on the day before the game. He doesn’t talk about strategy. He is just there. This is what the players have told me. I am telling you after listening to everyone. I never had a direct interaction. But from what I have seen, I felt that he doesn’t match with us.”Hassan believed that a five-day break for the team during their World Cup campaign -in the eight-day gap between their matches against Afghanistan and India – affected the concentration of the players, even though the team had been given a break to freshen up. He claimed that players had gone to Europe and expressed his surprise that nobody had informed him or the board directors Akram Khan (present with the World Cup squad as cricket operations chairman) and Khaled Mahmud (team manager) of the break. However, the players had been informed of the break by the team management, led by Mahmud. and none of them visited Europe.”There was a five-day holiday before the India game,” Hassan said. “There’s a difference between giving rest and a break. Everyone had left, so it broke their concentration. Maybe it is fine in their culture, but we feel that it doesn’t match with our culture.”Ahead of matches against two tough opponents, how does it feel to know that your players have gone to Europe? It is not acceptable. I don’t care what anyone is saying. I don’t think it was the right decision. You can give rest for two or three days. Their eyes and face should have said that they were thinking about the World Cup, the next two games. They haven’t matured as cricketers to come back from this type of break.””The biggest surprise was that I didn’t know that the team was on holiday. It hasn’t happened before. This was definitely a lapse but I am not singling out anyone. We had Akram [Khan] and [Khaled Mahmud] Sujon who were there but they also didn’t know. They heard about it after the break was given, so how did it benefit us?”Hassan claimed that captain Mashrafe Mortaza and wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim were added to the squad on the morning of the team’s last game against Pakistan, despite them carrying injuries.”The night before the Pakistan game, I was with the players till 11.30pm. Mushfiq, with his hand in a sling, was telling me that he couldn’t move his hand,” Hassan said. “He was not in the squad. Mashrafe didn’t practice the day before, and neither did he attend strategy meetings. He was also out of that game. These are just two examples.”We had fixed the squad in the presence of the coach and everyone. But the next day we saw another team playing the game. These things haven’t happened in the past. This is definitely a problem. We have decided that it won’t work like this. We are not saying he is not good but the way the team was running, it was totally different from our thinking.”

How Crystal Palace could be without Michael Olise for even longer

A report has detailed how Crystal Palace could be without star winger Michael Olise for even longer after his hamstring injury blow, which is set to keep him out for a minimum of two months as things stand.

Palace under pressure amid Hodgson sack rumours

Palace are facing the very real prospect of being relegated from the Premier League for the first time since their promotion around a decade ago.

"10/10" boss favourite to replace Hodgson as Crystal Palace search begins

Chairman Steve Parish is scouring for the Englishman’s successor.

ByEmilio Galantini Feb 6, 2024

Eagles supporters have already been in full voice protesting the club's leadership under chairman Steve Parish, but their dismal 4-1 derby loss away to Brighton has only intensified calls for manager Roy Hodgson to be given his P45.

“It was a bad start. That’s the last thing you really want – to be a goal down against Brighton, who are a very good team at home – but I thought in the first-half they outplayed us. We didn’t really get to grips with them in that half, and they were pretty much in control for that half," said Hodgson on Palace's loss to Brighton.

“The two goals which came in quick succession really made life almost impossible for us at half-time – how are we going to get back from this? – but I thought in the second-half the team did make a good effort to try and get back from it."

Reports suggest that Parish is actively seeking a replacement for Hodgson, and former Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cooper is a firm favourite for the potentially vacant post.

Palace are just four points above the relegation zone heading into next week's clash with Chelsea. Adding insult to injury, only Burnley and Sheffield United, the division's bottom two sides, have managed fewer goals than Hodgson's men.

There is also now the added complication of absences for key men, with both Olise and defender Marc Guehi set for a spell on the sidelines. The former was taken off after just 11 minutes with a hamstring problem which is expected to keep him out for two months minimum, but journalist Sami Mokbel of The Daily Mail has now explained how it could be even longer.

Rehab could extend Olise injury lay-off at Palace

Indeed, Mokbel claims Palace could be without Olise for longer than two months depending on his rehab, with the thought of that surely coming as a scary prospect for supporters given his injury is already a "huge blow".

The attacking midfielder boasts six goals and three assists in 11 appearances this season, and if wasn't for his various spells out, the numbers would be higher.

The football world has been deeply moved by the news that Hansen, a Liverpool legend and celebrated BBC pundit, is seriously ill in hospital. As tributes and messages of support pour in, prominent figures such as Lineker, Shearer, and Souness have shared their heartfelt words during the BBC's coverage of Euro 2024.

Lineker and Shearer began their Euro 2024 coverage with touching tributes to their former colleague. Hansen, who recently turned 69, was confirmed to be seriously ill, prompting an outpouring of support from his peers.

"It's been a tough week for everyone associated with Match of the Day with the news that Alan Hansen is seriously ill in hospital shocked us all, didn't it Alan?" Lineker began, setting the tone for a heartfelt segment.

Shearer responded with deep emotion: "Oh absolutely, I mean we are great friends with Al, we know his character, we know he's a fighter, we know how tough he is. So we are thinking of you big man and we are with you, we are hoping and praying."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Lineker continued by sending love and support to Hansen's family, using a golf analogy to describe Hansen's resilience: "To use an analogy of Alan's favourite pastime, golf, you might be three down with four to play – but if anyone can come back from it, it's Alan. I have never known a more competitive person in my life. We are all with you big Al."

Souness, Hansen's former teammate at Liverpool, also paid an emotional tribute ahead of Scotland's opening match at Euro 2024. Struggling to contain his emotions, Souness praised Hansen's exceptional skills and character.

"I had the pleasure of playing with him, he was an absolute dream for a midfielder," Souness said. "He passed the ball at the right weight at the right angle at the right time. Just a super footballer. I believe he was the best footballing centre-half ever."

Souness's admiration for Hansen extended beyond his footballing abilities. He described Hansen as a quality performer and an outstanding human being: "You’d have to search a long, long way to find anyone who’s got a bad word to say about him and that takes some doing. His chat and banter were top-class, and he was a pleasure to be around. He’s in the fight of his life right now and we should all say a little prayer to him."

Danger of revenue cut from ICC pushes BCCI to contact British law firm

The ICC continues to find ways to recoup the money it lost as a result of the tax paid during the 2016 World T20 held in India

ESPNcricinfo staff08-Aug-2019The ICC is considering cutting into the annual revenue it will give to the BCCI as it continues to find ways to recoup the money it lost as a result of the tax paid during the 2016 World T20 held in India. The 10% tax paid by the ICC to Indian tax authorities has resulted in a revenue loss of $20-30 million. The minutes of a Committee of Administrators (CoA) meeting held on July 6 states that while these events were previously exempted from taz, the Indian government’s stance changed in 2016, which forced the BCCI to withhold 10% of the amount payable by the broadcaster, , to the ICC.Early last year, it had emerged that India could be in danger of losing out on hosting the 2021 Champions Trophy (since replaced by the T20 World Cup) as well as the 2023 World Cup. The ICC management had been directed to seek alternative venues if the issue was not resolved.”The Board agreed that ICC management, supported by the BCCI will continue the dialogue with the Indian Government but in the meantime directed ICC management to explore alternative host countries in a similar time zone for the ICC Champions Trophy 2021,” the ICC had said in a release in February 2018.The minutes of the CoA meeting held last month say that the BCCI “made all efforts” with the government to try and ensure a tax exemption but three years on, the tax authorities have not budged. In the last decade alone, the Indian government allowed tax exemptions for the 2006 Champions Trophy as well as the 2011 World Cup.For the 2006 event, Ehsan Mani and the late Jagmohan Dalmiya had directly negotiated an exemption with the Indian government. On the basis of that negotiation, the government had passed a legislation in the relevant act, which allowed international sporting events to be exempted. This applied as recently as 2017, when the FIFA Under-17 World Cup got a tax break for broadcast equipment imported by FIFA’s host broadcasters. The BCCI will now seek the opinion of an English law firm about their legal options, since the 2016 event agreement between the board and the ICC was governed by English law.

Newcastle’s Jamaal Lascelles "trying to force" new deal – report

A fresh update has emerged regarding the future of an "unbelievable" Newcastle United player, with a new contract not out of the question.

Newcastle transfer news

The Magpies are now running out of time to bring in new faces in the January transfer window, with deadline day arriving next Thursday. Nobody has come in yet this month, and supporters will no doubt be desperate to see that change in the coming days.

Newcastle have been linked with plenty of players, although Kalvin Phillips has now completed a loan switch to West Ham, having been seen as a strong contender to head to St James' Park for some time. Meanwhile, Tottenham midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has also emerged as an alternative to the Englishman in the middle of the park.

Nottingham Forest ace Morgan Gibbs-White is another name who has been thrown into the mix, being seen as a possible replacement for Miguel Almiron if he moves on.

In terms of other potential outgoings, Callum Wilson is reportedly wanted by Chelsea in January, while Bayern Munich are believed to have ended their interest in Kieran Trippier.

Jamaal Lascelles' Newcastle future

According to a new report from Fotospor [via Sport Witness], Newcastle centre-back Jamaal Lascelles is "trying to force" Eddie Howe to give him a new deal at the club.

He is said to be "using" Besiktas' interest in him as a bargaining tool, hoping that he can end up extending his stay at St James' instead of moving elsewhere.

There is no doubt that Lascelles is no longer seen as a guaranteed starter for Newcastle, filling in when others are injured and not being the key man he used to be. Sven Botman and Fabian Schar have become the first-choice centre-back pairing, and the latter may even be replaced for an upgrade soon, considering he is now in his 30s.

That being said, keeping hold of Lascelles as a strong squad player could still make sense given the wealth of experience he possesses, not to mention his leadership skills. Howe has lauded him in that respect, saying back in the summer:

"He's been an unbelievable captain for us. Captaincy doesn't just exist on the pitch, it has to exist off the pitch. The two things are so intrinsically linked. A lot of our success last year wasn't just down to the team, it came down to a group of players giving everything on and off the pitch. There was a group off the pitch that were absolutely magnificent, and Jamaal was one of them. He will want to play but it's how you react that is the key. We move forward together."

The Magpies are yet to make their first January move.

Lascelles is out of contract at Newcastle at the end of the season, so a big decision has to be made very soon in terms of whether they cash in on him this month, let him leave for free in the summer, or hand him a new deal. The latter arguably makes the most sense, with losing him now potentially leading to an immediate negative impact on Howe's squad depth.
