Man Utd could sign "terrifying" £75m Hojlund upgrade in 2024

To describe the first third of Manchester United's season as rough this year would be quite the understatement.

The Red Devils enjoyed a brilliant season last year, winning the League Cup and qualifying for the Champions League; however, they have already been knocked out of the former and are standing on the cusp of an early exit from the latter this season.

Their Premier League form hasn't been much better either, with the team following up on their 2-1 win over Chelsea with a 3-0 home loss to Bournemouth, further increasing the pressure on Erik ten Hag.

The Dutch manager needs his players to start performing, and in particular, he needs new striker Rasmus Hojlund to open his league account. However, if the Dane continues to struggle, Ten Hag could replace him with the latest promising youngster linked to Old Trafford, Loïs Openda.

Manchester United transfer news – Loïs Openda

According to The Mirror, Manchester United have been tracking RB Leipzig's exciting young attacker Loïs Openda in recent months and had scouts in attendance at the Etihad to see him score a brace against Manchester City in the Champions League last month.

The report reveals that the scouts were incredibly impressed with what they saw and reported it back to Ten Hag, leading to the club making Openda a 'serious target' for 2024.

The same report also mentions the interest of several other sides, including Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur, as well as the fact that any move is likely to cost United in the region of £75m, more than twice the £35m fee the Germans paid to sign the forward from RC Lens in the summer.

The transfer would be an undeniably pricey one to complete, but considering the "terrifying" striker, as described by The Athletic journalist Seb Staffod-Bloor, has scored 14 goals in 19 appearances for Leipzig this season, it would be worth pursuing.

Why Openda has a brighter future than Hojlund

Now, it would be unfair and quite foolish to rule out Hojlund at this point in his United career, especially as he has shown glimpses of brilliance in Europe, but when it comes to who looks more likely to succeed at this moment in time, you would have to side with Openda.

Man Utd could unlock Fernandes by signing "ice-cold" Hojlund upgrade

Manchester United could sign the perfect striker for Bruno with a player who has scored three times more goals than Hojlund.

ByAdam Scully Dec 3, 2023

Where the Dane has flattered to deceive on the domestic front, the Belgian has flourished. It isn't just that he has scored more goals either; the former Lens man has generally just been the more impressive player for a couple of years now.

Comparing the pair's numbers from last season proves this, and what makes it more convincing is that Hojlund was in good goalscoring form last year, so it can't just be blamed on a poor few months.

The "exceptional" attacker, as described by one journalist, clearly outshines his potential new teammate in almost every critical attacking statistic, only falling just short in his progressive passing and his overall passing accuracy. It's notably exciting to assess Openda's ball-carrying skills. Indeed, the ability to beat a man and then find the net is something that shouldn't be sniffed at by United's recruitment team.

There is, of course, every chance that Hojlund can improve at United as he grows more accustomed to English football. However, the fact that Ten Hag has opted to start Anthony Martial ahead of him in certain games is undoubtedly concerning, given the Frenchman's uninspiring record at the club.

Ultimately, if United want to fight their way back to the pinnacle of English and European football, then going in for and signing a player like Openda wouldn't be the worst idea, even if it means that their current Danish wonderkid has to take a backseat for a while.

Jos Buttler admits 'reality check' as England's Test No.1 credentials are found out

Ben Stokes’ workload a worry as England attempt to save face after Holder onslaught

Andrew Miller25-Jan-2019

Jos Buttler admitted that England had been served a timely reality check after two torrid days in a row in Barbados – first with the bat and then with the ball – but believes that their long and unlikely challenge of batting out the final two days to save the first Test is an “opportunity to have a much better showing”.Buttler, who was one of five England batsmen to be blown away by Kemar Roach in their dismal first innings of 77, also dropped a key catch in the covers off Shimron Hetmyer in West Indies’ first innings. He had little involvement on a long and hot third day, however, as Jason Holder and Shane Dowrich put their bowlers to the sword in a remarkable unbeaten seventh-wicket stand of 295.”They’re both pretty tough days,” Buttler said. “Yesterday was a really poor reflection on us as a side. We can do much better than that.”Today was pretty thankless as well out there. As much as we could, we stuck together. The guys kept running in, [Ben] Stokes and [James] Anderson didn’t get any rewards for it but it showed their passion for playing for England.”Assuming England are unable to stave off defeat in the coming six sessions, they will come to the end a run of five Test victories in a row, dating back to the 4-1 series win over India last summer and including their 3-0 win in Sri Lanka before Christmas. And, given that England’s captain, Joe Root, had been openly targeting the No. 1 world ranking in the build-up to the series, Buttler admitted that the events in Barbados were not good enough for a team with such lofty ambitions.”It was tough to explain, I guess. Our bowlers having not had long to rest can make a bit of a difference. The guys trucked in all day and showed immense amount of determination and real fitness to keep going.”But with the bat we were well below, and with our aim of getting to the No.1 side in the world, that is nowhere near good enough. We’ve had a good run of games but we obviously played poorly adapting to conditions. We have to be better at coming through that tough situation.”It’s a good reality check, probably, as a side, for where we’re at in international cricket.”England’s troubles in the Caribbean may not be confined to this Test alone, however, if the workload that was forced on England’s senior bowlers, James Anderson and Ben Stokes, has knock-on effects for the second Test in Antigua, which gets underway next week. Both men were forced back into the attack late in England’s innings due to the imbalance elsewhere in a bowling attack that Buttler admitted had been misjudged. And Stokes in particular ended up bowling 50 overs across both innings, the second time in his career he has had such a heavy workload in a single Test.”It’s tough to get the ball out of his hand,” Buttler said. “He’s got such incredible skill and a massive heart, and he wants to be in the action all of the time. He’s an all-action cricketer. We have to manage his workload but it’s tough to do that when he just wants to keep going, he has an incredible level of fitness and desire to keep going.”I think watching him train, everything he does [is 100%]. He has to manage it but he’s good at doing that. He has an incredible amount of energy. Of course the management and captain want to look after the players, especially someone like that, but try telling him not to be involved or to take a rest.”For the remainder of the Test, however, it will be over to Stokes’ batting, and that of the rest of a chastened team, as they seek to build on the early efforts of Rory Burns and Keaton Jennings, and atone for their first-innings failings.”It’s an opportunity for everyone one to 11,” Buttler said. “After the first innings, everyone is determined to have a much better showing. The two guys at the top are no different to anyone else, we all want to give a much better account of ourselves.”We just have to take the 600 out of the thought process,” he added. “Hour by hour, session by session, playing as well as you can and seeing where that gets you. It could be a daunting task, so we just have to break it down as much as we can.”

Cremer temporarily puts cricket career on hold for family

Former Zimbabwe captain Graeme Cremer has temporarily put his cricket career on hold due to family commitments. The 32-year-old legspinner recently relocated from Harare to join his wife Merna, who is now based in Dubai and working as a pilot.”With my wife always away flying, I now have a full-time job looking after the kids and settling them into this new environment,” explained Cremer. “I am hoping this may only be temporary, so I may be able to commute back and forth to Zimbabwe, but who knows what the future holds. That’s all I can say at this stage.”But while I am away I wish Zimbabwe Cricket all the very best in what’s to come, and I hope to join the boys again in the future.”Cremer has played 19 Tests, 96 one-day internationals and 29 Twenty20 internationals, taking a combined 211 wickets for Zimbabwe across formats. He missed Zimbabwe’s recent tours to South Africa and Bangladesh due to knee surgery, but had made a tentative return to action in December, helping his franchise Rhinos to victory over Mountaineers in a Pro50 Championship match played in Kwekwe.ZC acting managing director Givemore Makoni said Cremer would be greatly missed and hoped that the former captain will be available for selection again soon.”Your wickets, numbers and everything you have contributed to our game speak for themselves and we as ZC are proud of you,” said Makoni.”Your services will be greatly missed but we hope to have you in our national colours again soon. In the meantime, we send our best wishes to you and your family.”

South Africa to chase 149 after Olivier takes 11

Pakistan imploded from 101 for 1 to 190 all out on the second day, with the home team’s pacers inducing a post-tea collapse

The Report by Liam Brickhill27-Dec-2018

The Centurion Test continued to twist and turn on the second day as South Africa secured a 42-run lead before Pakistan eased to 101 for 1 and then imploded after tea to be bowled out for 190. Duanne Olivier added to his six-wicket haul in the first innings with 5 for 59 in the second to record match figures of 11 for 96 – the-third best figures in Tests at this ground. Imam-ul-Haq and Shan Masood drove Pakistan forward with fifties but there were also three ducks in the visitors’ second-dig collapse, with captain Sarfraz Ahmed bagging a pair. South Africa will need to chase just 149 on Friday to win the match in three days.Pakistan’s top order had looked much more assured in the second session, with Imam and Fakhar Zaman erasing South Africa’s lead before Imam combined with Masood in a 57-run second-wicket stand that put Pakistan in the comfortable position of 100 for 1 at tea, a lead of 58. But when Imam fell in the opening moments of the evening session, chopping Olivier onto his stumps for 57, South Africa had their opening.Azhar Ali got himself in an awful muddle attempting a pull at an Olivier bouncer, spooning a catch to a diving Kagiso Rabada at short midwicket to fall to the third ball he faced. Olivier had his tail up, bowling a splice-jarring length at express pace, and Dale Steyn quickly won his battle with a flat-footed Asad Shafiq, but it was Rabada who tore through the lower-middle order, nipping Babar Azam, Sarfraz and Mohammad Amir out in successive overs. While Babar was undone by a peach of a delivery, Sarfraz chased a ball outside off and Amir was castled by one that kept low. With the rearguard wrecked, Olivier picked up his tenth wicket in the match when Yasir Shah edged the very first ball he faced – predictably, a bouncer – through to Quinton de Kock. Pakistan were 159 for 8, and amid the carnage, only Masood had stood firm, bringing up a 77-ball fifty in the 39th over of the innings.Masood survived a review when South Africa thought he had gloved a short ball from Olivier, and with Hasan Ali for company, played his shots to counter Olivier’s head-hunting length. Together they had stretched Pakistan’s lead to 143 when Steyn returned and Masood played one pull too many, picking out Keshav Maharaj at deep midwicket – one of three fielders in the deep on the leg side.Kagiso Rabada celebrates after a wicket•AFP

The dismissal gave Steyn his 50th wicket against Pakistan in Tests, but fittingly it was Olivier who brought the innings to a close. An unsettled Shaheen Afridi fended yet another short one into the leg side, with Aiden Markram at short leg holding on to an excellent reflex catch, and Pakistan’s collapse was an eye-watering 9 for 89.Their capitulation stood in stark contrast to the grit displayed by the top three after lunch. Imam had been the lucky recipient of a missed chance by Hashim Amla at first slip in the fifth over of the innings, but he made the drop count to keep South Africa sweating through the second session. He and Fakhar rode their luck to take Pakistan level before Fakhar fell against the run of play, lifting a leg-stump half volley from Olivier straight to Rabada at fine leg – the only fielder in the deep on that side of the pitch.Imam was unflustered by the dismissal, easing to a 71-ball fifty, and the assurance of his and Masood’s batting gave no hint of the havoc that would come. But the character of the pitch has meant that the bowlers have controlled this fast-moving Test throughout, and South Africa had been similarly tested this morning – though the results weren’t quite as catastrophic for them. With Amir probing with both the new and old ball, and none of the South African top five reaching 30, the hosts were thankful for the efforts of Temba Bavuma and de Kock, who carried them to 223 and a slim lead.De Kock looked to play as he usually does, simplifying his attacking intent, and Bavuma looked the picture of composure as he eased calmly to his third Test fifty in the calendar year. But there was enough in the track, even with the old ball, to keep the bowlers interested and Bavuma admitted at the end of the day that he “never felt in”.He edged Afridi behind shortly before drinks in the morning, but de Kock put South Africa ahead with a languid drive and continued to pepper the cover boundary. Judicious use of the review helped prise Maharaj from the crease, and Rabada entered and played his shots before he and de Kock fell in quick succession with South Africa having earned a small, but handy lead. That lead looked far more useful when Pakistan folded in spectacular session in the evening, and as had been the case on the first day, 15 wickets fell in the day. Much could depend on the first hour of the third morning. If South Africa can get a solid start, their chase could be a simple one. But Pakistan have the personnel and a pitch that could yet add a final twist on day three if they can strike early. Either way, the match could well be over before the thunderstorms predicted on Friday afternoon afternoon get close to the ground.

He also revealed his love for Al-Nassr star Cristiano Ronaldo whom he idolised from his Manchester United days.

Speaking to L'Equipe, the 24-year-old striker said: "I understand it too. I'm not Neymar, (Eden) Hazard or (Lionel) Messi, guys who, when you see them, you say to yourself: 'Wow, what a player!' For me, my advantage would rather be the statistics, precisely, the goals. But whatever the profile, the attacker is fundamental in a team. If the attacker plays well, the team plays well. Football has changed so much.

"Today, people say: 'Football is more physical, there are more races.' But they don't understand that precisely because there are physical players, your technique must be at the top. You have less and less time and space to do things. They also say: 'Ah, there are no more numbers 10 from the time, what a shame.' While there are still plenty of top quality players like them, but we see them less because everything is going much faster."

Phil Hay says Leeds could now look to bolster key position in January

Leeds United are in a blistering run of form under Daniel Farke and could now look to strengthen one key area in the January transfer window, according to journalist Phil Hay.

Leeds United prepare for Sunderland…

Leeds United secured a precious three points at Ewood Park against Blackburn Rovers as goals from Daniel James and Crysencio Summerville secured a 2-0 victory and kept the Whites on track in their hunt for Championship promotion. Now, the Yorkshire outfit sit third in the league standings with 41 points from 20 fixtures played; however, they still find themselves seven points adrift of Ipswich Town in second ahead of their showdown at Elland Road two days before Christmas.

In the aftermath of their triumph in Lancashire, Farke was delighted with his side's resilience after keeping a clean sheet, as he said via BBC Sport: "I'm especially pleased that we travel back with a clean sheet against a really good and dangerous side. We didn't allow them to have much."

Farke could unearth his next Aarons in Leeds swoop for "unbelievable" teen

He then added: "They had their spells in possession but in terms of big chances, there was not too much. It was important after a few weeks where we have conceded one goal, sometimes even two goals, today to return absolutely rock solid defence with a clean sheet. It's a really good performance and a massive win for us. I'm pretty delighted."

Of course, stiff tests are on the horizon for Leeds United as Farke's men plot a return to the Premier League at the first time of asking, with a trip to Sunderland next on the agenda.

In light of this, journalist Hay has now taken to social media to provide an exciting update from the manager regarding an area where the Whites could potentially strengthen in the upcoming transfer window.

Leeds United could target a left-back

Taking to social media platform X, The Athletic journalist Hay has shared quotes from Farke's pre-match press conference ahead of their clash at the Stadium of Light that convey the message that Leeds are ready to target a left-back in January, as he stated the following below.

Of course, the German coach also intimated that Junior Firpo is now close to returning to the fold, in training at least, which will help to give the Whites' fans some added optimism that the Dominican Republic international can once again provide another option on the left-hand side of defence over the festive period.

Leeds United defender Junior Firpo.

Nevertheless, recruiting a left-back will be a top priority at Elland Road in January as they look to make sure they have sufficient squad depth to compete with their promotion rivals.

Coming through a clutch of difficult matches will be their first port of call; however, it is encouraging to hear that the notion of strengthening is already being spoken about directly ahead of the New Year.

Everton could land ideal Branthwaite replacement in "humble" £43m-rated rock

Everton have picked up enough points this season under Sean Dyche to have placed themselves firmly in the top ten, having won the same number of Premier League matches as both Brighton and Hove Albion and West Ham United, who are competing for the European places.

The ten-point deduction that the Toffees received hasn’t done justice to the fact that had Everton not been punished, the club would be in contention for one of the league’s seven available European places.

Nevertheless, with success comes more suitors for your players and Dyche's side are now facing a battle to keep hold of star defender Jarrad Branthwaite, although the Merseyside club do have one name lined up as his replacement.

Everton transfer news – Federico Gatti

According to a report from Calciomercato earlier this week, Everton are keeping tabs on Juventus defender Federico Gatti’s progress with the Italian giants and haven’t given up hope of signing him in January, despite Gatti signing a new five-year contract extension at the end of October.

Everton were one of several Premier League clubs that approached Juventus in the build-up to the summer deadline in the hopes of signing the centre-half, but Juve have now tied the Italy international down to a new long-term contract.

Nevertheless, Dyche is clearly in the market for another centre-back, particularly since it has been reported that star defender Jarrad Branthwaite is a top target for Manchester United this winter as Erik ten Hag looks for options to shore up his leaky defence.

Everton could replicate Branthwaite steal by signing £4m-rated Godfrey upgrade

This central defender could be the perfect replacement for Jarrad Branthwaite.

ByAdam Scully Dec 9, 2023

Losing Branthwaite would be a colossal blow for Everton as the ex-Carlisle United central defender has contributed massively to a defence that boasts the joint-fourth-fewest number of goals conceded this season.

Federico Gatti’s stats this season

Juventus have kept nine clean sheets in 15 matches this season in Serie A which is the second-most behind Inter Milan. Gatti has played in 13 of these matches, starting 12 alongside star defender Gleison Bremer.

Club captain Danilo has been left impressed with Gatti’s contribution to the team this season and even labelled the 25-year-old as a “humble boy” who has been “an example” to the rest of the squad in the current campaign. The reason for these comments is that Gatti was playing in the fourth tier of Italian football in 2020 and is now fighting for a league title with one of the biggest clubs in Europe.

One area that sets Gatti apart from the rest of the defenders in Italian football is his threatening nature inside the penalty area. In 13 league appearances, the ex-Frosinone man has scored three goals. Only Dusan Vlahovic and Federico Chiesa have managed more this term for the Bianconeri.

As a result of his impressive form with the Old Lady, the CIES Football Observatory have placed Gatti’s market value currently at £43m, having been worth merely £4m twelve months ago.

Furthermore, Gatti has actually been outperforming Branthwaite in a number of key metrics for a centre-back.

As shown in the table above, Gatti is far more adept at playing out from the back – shown by his superior record with relation to progressive passes and progressive carries – although that's not to suggest that he can't also offer a brick wall defensively, as shown by his 69.7% aerials duels won per 90.

With that being said, Everton should definitely still look to keep Branthwaite, but if the club are forced to accept an offer for him this January, the Toffees may look no further than Gatti.
