Hetmyer returns for Bangladesh Tests

A series win will see the ninth-ranked West Indies swap places with the eighth-ranked Bangladesh

ESPNcricinfo staff03-Jul-2018Shimron Hetmyer has recovered from the illness that kept him out of West Indies’ last Test against Sri Lanka to return to the squad for the two-Test series against Bangladesh.Left-handed batsman Hetmyer was not picked in the XI for the first two Tests of the series against Sri Lanka, before being taken ill ahead of the third Test. West Indies drew the series against Sri Lanka 1-1. They won the first Test by 226 runs, while a somewhat rain-affected second Test was drawn, but Sri Lanka came back well in the final match for a four-wicket win. While commending the team for the performance against Sri Lanka, the West Indies selection panel said they wanted more runs from the top-order. The selection panel “expects to see a greater effort from the top 5 batters and see them return to the focus and discipline we know they are capable of in the upcoming series against Bangladesh… We congratulate the team on a drawn series [against Sri Lanka] but recognise that victory was within our reach. The selection panel also acknowledge and commend the strong performances of captain Jason Holder, Shannon Gabriel and man of the series Shane Dowrich.”This series is also an opportunity for West Indies to go past Bangladesh in the Test rankings. Bangladesh are currently in eighth position with 75 points, with West Indies ninth on 72 points. A win for the home side will see them overtake Bangladesh, while a drawn series will maintain the status quo. Bangladesh will remain in the eighth spot even if they win 2-0, though they will narrow the gap with seventh-ranked Pakistan.

"Real shame", "Not ideal" – BBC pundit reacts to "star" Leeds player injury

Leeds United are in fine fettle on the pitch, but BBC pundit Alan Hutton has been left disappointed by the injury news surrounding one of the club's star men.

What's the latest news involving Leeds United?

Speaking to Football Insider, Hutton has praised young Leeds defender Charlie Cresswell for his attitude toward proceedings at Elland Road despite first-team minutes being hard to come by for the 21-year-old this term.

Hutton stated: "It’s always hard to break into the first team as a young player. But if you’ve got the right personality and a bit about you, and the other boys take to you – it always helps. They want to keep you involved and part of the group. I think that’s always a good thing, and it helps you settle in.

"His time will obviously come at Leeds, it will happen, but it’s good to see that he’s got the right attitude even though he’s not playing at the moment. It can be very difficult, so to hear that from the manager is quite refreshing and good for the player."

Presenter Joe Wainman meanwhile has indicated to GIVEMESPORT that there may be no way back for Leeds United trio Luis Sinisterra, Tyler Adams and Jack Harrison at Elland Road due to the fact they sought moves away from the Yorkshire giants during the summer transfer window.

Southampton await Leeds this weekend at St Mary's Stadium and Whites' boss Daniel Farke will be keen to build on a solid start to life back in the Sky Bet Championship, which has yielded a six-match unbeaten streak and four consecutive clean sheets.

Nevertheless, the German coach will have to do without the services of talented attacker Wilfried Gnonto, who is scheduled to be out until after the next international break and will require minor surgery on an ankle issue, as per Leeds Live.

What has Alan Hutton said about Wilfried Gnonto?

In conversation with Football Insider, former Scotland international Hutton, who is also a pundit for the BBC, thinks that Gnonto is one of Leeds United's 'star' players and believes his injury is a 'real shame' and is 'not ideal' for Whites manager Farke to contend with as he chases promotion.

Hutton said: "Sometimes it can be tough when you’ve had a tough pre-season and you’ve been on international duty. He’s not really had a break and the Championship is a really hard league. But Gnonto is now one of the star players at Leeds, who are doing alright. “I thought he would’ve got a move away, but it didn’t happen. It’s a real shame for him. No time is a good time to get injuries, but this is really not ideal when Leeds need him to help chase Leicester down at the top of the table."

wilfried-gnonto-leeds-united-transfer-injury-daniel-james-jaidon-anthony

Verbania-born Gnonto has managed to make six appearances in all competitions for Leeds United this term, registering a solitary goal against Ipswich Town, as per Transfermarkt.

As always, the former FC Zurich man has been a tricky presence in the final third for opposition backlines to contain, averaging around 1.8 shots and 2.6 completed dribbles per fixture in the Sky Bet Championship, as per WhoScored.

Leeds boss Farke will be desperate for the youngster to re-enter the fold before too long as the Whites aim to secure a return to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

West Ham: "Wonderful" player is now "ready to leave" after contract update

A "wonderful" West Ham United player is reportedly "ready to leave" after being left unhappy with the club's latest offer of a new contract.

West Ham contract news

In the last few weeks, David Moyes and the Hammers board have been attempting, and often succeeding to tie down their most important senior and young stars with new deals. Star winger Jarrod Bowen, who recently put pen to paper on a contract extension till 2030, has committed his long-term future at the London Stadium and looks set to remain for many years to come.

The England international was reportedly attracting interest from the likes of Liverpool, so this will come as a huge boost for West Ham, a fact not lost on Moyes who recently heralded the news.

“We’re delighted Jarrod has agreed a new deal. It’s a brilliant piece of business from the club to tie him down to a new long-term contract,” he said to the West Ham website.

“His goal in Prague will live long in the memory for everyone connected to West Ham – it’s given him a platform to go from strength to strength and we’re really reaping the benefits, he’s getting better and better. He’s a fantastic boy and an outstanding professional – I’m sure his positive progress will continue over the course of his new contract.”

The Irons also tied down promising young teenager Dan Rigge, coming as more brilliant news, but the same cannot be said for midfielder Tomas Soucek. The Czech Republic midfielder could apparently be sold in January if talks over an extension don't take a positive turn, with Football Insider recently claiming that discussions have stalled over the last year.

Ben Johnson contract update

Midfielders Pablo Fornals and Conor Coventry also look likely to leave upon the expiry of their contracts next summer. Now, according to West Ham insider Claret & Hugh, young defender Ben Johnson can be added to the list of 2024 departees.

They claim that the Englishman is "ready to leave" east London after being left unhappy over West Ham's latest new contract offer. Johnson, despite "wanting to stay", will apparently quit the club along with Coventry. He's likely to remain until the summer unless West Ham sign another full-back in January.

The 23-year-old, who's started just one EFL Cup match this season, has been praised for his contribution in past seasons by former West Ham coach and ex-England international Stuart Pearce.

"The most important thing about Ben is whenever you pass him or meet him first thing in the morning, he's got a smile on his face. He takes in all the knowledge you can pass on to him," said Pearce.

"He's a wonderful professional to deal with and work with. We're very proud to have him out of our academy system as well, which is a real plus for us, especially with the connection to this club with the academy.

"I think he's just developing and getting better and better, and like with all young players, the more game time they have, the better they'll get, so I am delighted for the boy."

VIDEO: 'England's number one!' – Hannah Hampton soaks in adulation of Chelsea fans after registering maiden Champions League clean sheet in Blues' huge Ajax win

Hannah Hampton posed for pictures with fans after Chelsea's UWCL win over Ajax as others called for her to become England's starting goalkeeper.

Hampton kept first UWCL clean sheetChelsea fans sing goalkeeper's praisesEngland competition for Earps heats up WHAT HAPPENED?

Hampton kept the first Women's Champions League clean sheet of her career as Chelsea cruised to a 3-0 win over Ajax in Amsterdam in the first leg of their quarter-final tie. Vocal travelling Blues fans made their feelings clear about her international prospects after the final whistle, claiming that she is already England's best stopper.

AdvertisementWATCH THE CLIPGettyTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Hampton's decision to join Chelsea last summer was questioned when the Blues had already agreed to sign Belgium international Nicky Evrard on top of existing goalkeeping stars Zecira Musovic and Ann-Katrin Berger, especially when she spent the first two portion of the season sat on the bench. But the 23-year-old was given her WSL chance in the final game before Christmas – a 3-0 win over Bristol City – and hasn't looked back.

She has started every league game since and and was afforded only her second European appearance during this week's trip to the Netherlands. Establishing herself as Chelsea's regular starter is positioning Hampton, described by Emma Hayes as "absolutely superb" against Manchester City in the recent Conti Cup semi-final, as genuine competition to Mary Earps for England's number one shirt ahead of Euro 2025 next summer, with the Lionesses seeking to retain their title from 2022. The rapidly emerging Khiara Keating is doing something similarly impressive at Manchester City.

Now that she has ascended to No.1, Hampton will be focused on keeping her Chelsea place for the remainder of this season and beyond. The next few months could well bring a historic quadruple, with the Blues in control of the WSL title race, set to contest the Conti Cup final on March 31, into the FA Cup semi-finals and targeting the elusive Champions League as Hayes prepares to bow out.

There is no summer tournament for England this year, but six Euro 2025 qualifiers between early April and mid-July could give three-cap Hampton, an unused member of Sarina Wiegman's squads at both Euro 2022 and last summer's World Cup, the chance to begin staking her international claim.

Sunderland: Mowbray must move Roberts aside for 5 ft 8 "star boy"

Sunderland have enjoyed an excellent start to the 2023/24 Championship season and are currently in the play-off places as they head into the October international break.

The Black Cats are fourth in the division and have won six of their 11 league matches, whilst losing four, with Tony Mowbray at the helm so far this term.

They reached the semi-final of the play-offs last season and lost to Luton Town, who went on to win the showpiece at Wembley to earn promotion to the Premier League.

Sunderland are now looking to go one better this time around and the early signs are encouraging as they are well in the race to secure another top six finish.

As you can see in the table above, youth has been at the heart of the club's success so far this season as four of their top five best-performing players are under the age of 25, with 29-year-old ace Bradley Dack being the exception.

The Black Cats have built a squad full of talented young prospects and one promising dynamo who could develop into a star for Mowbray is Costa Rica international Jewison Bennette.

He was an unused substitute in the recent 4-0 defeat to Middlesbrough and the head coach must finally unleash the exciting forward after the international break.

How did Patrick Roberts perform against Middlesbrough?

Patrick Roberts started out wide on the right against Boro last weekend and struggled on and off the ball throughout the match with a disappointing display.

As per Sofascore, the former Manchester City prospect attempted four shots and missed one 'big chance' as he failed to find the back of the net, and was tackled in both of his dribble attempts.

The English whiz also only made one key pass in his 90 minutes on the pitch and did not create any 'big chances' for his teammates, which suggests that he found it difficult to break down the opposition's defence.

His lack of physicality also went against him as Boro's players found it far too easy to get the better of the Sunderland forward. Roberts lost a staggering seven of his eight duels and only made one tackle, whilst he failed to make any interceptions, blocks, or clearances to help out his defence in what turned out to be an emphatic win for the away side.

How many goals has Roberts scored this season?

The 26-year-old ace has failed to provide a single goal or assist in nine Championship matches so far during the 2023/24 campaign.

He has started six matches for the Black Cats without being directly involved in a goal and this means that the former Norwich City loanee has gone 585 minutes without a goal contribution.

Sunderland forward Patrick Roberts.

This disappointing form comes after he managed five goals and seven assists in 42 league outings last term. The talented whiz created ten 'big chances' for his teammates throughout the 2022/23 season, but has only created one this time around.

Roberts has also lost 57% of his duels so far this term and this shows that opposition players are getting the better of him more often than not.

However, the English technician has been reliable in possession with a pass accuracy 88%, which shows that he rarely gives the ball away cheaply and can be trusted to retain it under pressure.

Whilst that is a useful attribute to have, Roberts is not supplementing that with goals and assists to change and win matches for Sunderland to boost their promotion bid.

Therefore, his place could be under threat and Mowbray should now move him aside, for at least one game, to see what Bennette could offer from the start.

How many appearances has Bennette made this season?

The 19-year-old wizard has only played eight minutes of Championship football so far this season and registered an assist in that cameo.

He completed one dribble and one chance, which resulted in an assist for 16-year-old Chris Rigg, in eight minutes against Southampton earlier this season.

The Costa Rica international has been an unused substitute in three league matches since that impressive showing but has caught the eye at youth level for the Black Cats.

Costa Rica international Jewison Bennette.

Bennette has racked up one goal and two assists in three Premier League 2 games for the U21 side throughout the 2023/24 campaign, which shows that he is in a rich vein of form in the final third.

He has been directly involved in four goals in five matches in all competitions for the first-team and academy combined this term, whilst Roberts is still looking for his first goal or assist of the season.

This comes after Bennette, who was once dubbed a "star boy" by journalist Josh Bunting, managed one goal and one assist in 15 substitute appearances in the Championship during the 2022/23 campaign.

Should Bennette start against Stoke?

The Black Cats travel away to face Stoke City after the international break and Mowbray, who once dubbed the teenage whiz as an "electric" player, must finally unleash him from the start for the first time in the league.

Bennette is yet to make his full debut at Championship level and his performances for the U21 side and his cameos for the first-team suggest that the potential is there for him to make a big impact at the top end of the pitch.

The 5 foot 8 magician has produced two goals and four assists in eight U21 games for the club since the start of last season and has two assists in the second tier, despite not starting a single league match over the last 15 months.

Roberts' performances in the final third have left a lot to be desired, in spite of the rest of his play leading up to the box, and Bennette is a young player who has showcased the potential to be a game-changer.

The impressive youngster could be a difference-maker with his ability to score and create goals from a wide position and that is why Mowbray must unleash him on the opposite flank to Jack Clarke to see if he can grasp a first-team opportunity.

Bangladesh, Ireland secure Women's World T20 berths

Bangladesh will aim to build on their Asia Cup success as they square off against Ireland in Saturday’s final

ESPNcricinfo staff12-Jul-2018

ACC

Billed favourites to book the final two spots for the forthcoming Women’s World T20 in the Caribbean, Bangladesh and Ireland lived up to the tag in the eight-team qualifying tournament with convincing semi-final wins over Scotland and Papua New Guinea. A victory in the final on Saturday will be as much a contest for bragging rights as it will to validate or reverse the result of the 2015 edition, where Bangladesh finished second behind Ireland.Either Bangladesh or Ireland will face West Indies (in Group A) or Australia (in Group B) in the World T20 opener on November 9 and 11 respectively, pending the result in the final.Ranked ninth and tenth on the ICC multi-format women’s team rankings, Bangladesh finished atop Group A with a 49-run victory at the VRA Ground in Amstelveen hours within Ireland topped Group B by defeating PNG by 27 runs at the venue.Ireland Women players celebrate a wicket•Getty Images/ICC

Bangladesh’s entry into the World T20 comes on the back of a maiden Asia-Cup title-winning campaign in June, where they stunned heavyweights India twice. Ireland, meanwhile, recovered from big-margin, limited-overs series defeats against New Zealand and a 2-1 T20I series defeat against Bangladesh – both at home – less two weeks ago.An unbeaten, three-match-winning streak heading into the semi-final meant the crucial tie against Scotland was only for Ireland’s to lose. Having being put in at the toss by PNG, a wicket off the second ball of the game inspired hopes of a potential upset, but only momentarily. A top-score of 36 from the in-form Gaby Lewis anchored a 47-run second-wicket stand for Ireland, before Lucy O’Reilly’s career-best 3 for 13 rolled over PNG for 86 in 19.2 overs. For Bangladesh, their in-form opening pair of Shamima Sultana and Ayasha Rahman – who had laid the platform for the victors in the low-scoring Asia Cup final – added 51 in 6.5 overs, before middle-order batsman Nigar Sultana’s 31 lifted them to 125 for 6.Scotland wobbled early in the chase, losing opener Rachael Scholes to Bangladesh captain Salma Khatun in the fourth over. But the Bryce sisters – Sarah and captain Kathryn – kept Scotland’s hopes alive, with Sarah collecting a dogged 31 that took Scotland past 50 – in the 13th over.It was, however, a timely strike from legspinner Fahima Khatun, who, on Tuesday became the first Bangladesh bowler – male or female to take a T20I hat-trick, that sent back Sarah and triggered a collapse. Scotland lost 7 for 14 over the following three overs, and the four combined wickets from Nahida Akter and vice-captain Rumana Ahmed strangled them to 76 for 7 snuffed out their hopes of qualification.

Yorkshire bring in Mathew Pillans from Surrey

The South Africa-born fast bowler has moved north on loan for the rest of the season

ESPNcricinfo staff24-Aug-2018Yorkshire have signed Mathew Pillans on a three-year contract from Surrey, with the South Africa-born fast bowler moving on loan for the rest of the season.Pillans joined Surrey in 2016, arriving in the UK on an ancestral visa, but has found his opportunities limited. His chief contributions at The Oval came in T20, while he also enjoyed a successful loan spell at Leicestershire last year. The 27-year-old has an impressive record from his time with Dolphins in South Africa, and he will add to Yorkshire’s pace options after Liam Plunkett agreed a move in the other direction to Surrey.”Mat has been at Surrey for a couple of years now, and he’s not had a huge amount of opportunity in the first team, so he’s looking to progress his career,” Yorkshire’s director of cricket, Martyn Moxon, said. “We’re obviously looking for that continuity of availability. He fits the bill for us.”He’s a bowler who has pace and is tall, and we’re looking forward to having him on board. I’m sure he’ll do well for us. He’s a different type of bowler to what we’ve already got. We’ve got a strong seam bowling squad, but it’s nice to have a bit of variety. Mat gives us something we haven’t currently got.”Pillans has previously indicated his intention of qualifying to play for England, although he will be 31 by the time he does so. Tall and with a strong action, he is also a powerful striker with the bat.”My initial reaction was it’s great to be joining a club with great heritage,” he said of the move to Yorkshire. “It’s quite an honour, and I felt proud when I signed the contract.”It was a bit out of the blue. I hadn’t really got anything planned to be honest. Being my last year at Surrey, I was just focusing on the cricket. The talent that Surrey have there made it a competitive environment. In that sense, to feed off the talent, I feel my game improved quite a bit being there.”In saying that, I feel I have bit more to offer given what I’ve learnt. It will great to put that into practice when I get to Yorkshire. From a personal point of view, my number one objective is to improve my game as much as I can and be the best cricketer I can be.”I’m coming into another talented changing room, so hopefully I can continue to learn. Hopefully there’s also something I can add to the party with that as well. As soon as I qualify for England, I want to be up to that standard. That’s a long-term goal, though.”

Bangladesh boosted by Mashrafe's presence against imperious West Indies

Big Picture

ODIs haven’t been much on the menu for Bangladesh and West Indies off late, as the impending series is only their second assignment in the format in 2018. The hosts’ successful qualification into next year’s World Cup means that their summit climb starts here at home, against a Bangladesh side that is eager to find a footing after the terrible Test series. The visitors have the inspirational Mashrafe Mortaza back in their ranks. It was a touch-and-go thing for him to come to the West Indies after he stayed back with his ill wife for much of the last four weeks. But he will be pleased to find that his squad has extra cover for batting and pace bowling.Apart from the big four – Tamim Iqbal, Mushfiqur Rahim, Shakib Al Hasan and Mahmudullah – in their batting line-up, Mashrafe has Anamul Haque, Liton Das, Sabbir Rahman, Mosaddek Hossain and Nazmul Hossain Shanto to try different combinations. Among them, Liton is likely to have won the openers’ battle against Anamul Haque while Sabbir and Mosaddek have to fight for the lower-order finisher’s role.Mashrafe will lead the pace attack alongside the returning Mustafizur Rahman who has much to prove after he missed the Afghanistan T20s and the West Indies Tests due to injury. Rubel Hossain will be enlivened by a format in which he is better at, than Tests or T20s, while Abu Jayed would also be buoyed by his Test showing. Abu Hider, who has played couple of T20s, provides variety with his left-arm pace. In the spin department, Shakib and Mehidy Hasan Miraz are joined by Nazmul Islam who has impressed in recent T20s.The home side meanwhile has made several changes to the side that played in Zimbabwe in March. Gone are Carlos Brathwaite, Sheldon Cottrell, Nikita Miller, Kemar Roach, Marlon Samuel and Kesrick Williams; Alzarri Joseph and Kieran Powell have been brought in while Andre Russell makes a comeback to the ODI side after three years.West Indies will feel more confident than Bangladesh given how the Test series went. Now, Jason Holder has Chris Gayle, Evin Lewis and Russell for the batting firepower, though they will surely miss the services of Shannon Gabriel and Kemar Roach. Holder, however, can depend on his own bowling form, with help from Joseph and Keemo Paul, who impressed on Test debut a week ago, and spinners Devendra Bishoo and Ashley Nurse.

Form Guide

West Indies: LWWLW (last five completed matches, most recent first)
Bangladesh: LLWWW

In the spotlight

Jason Holder’s 11-wicket haul in the second Test has put him front and centre on Bangladesh’s radar. Holder has also been West Indies’ most successful bowler in the last 12 months, picking up 22 wickets. His batting can be dangerous in the late overs too, especially now that Andre Russell has returned to the ODI squad.Surprisingly, Bangladesh’s highest wicket-taker in the last 12 months has been Rubel Hossain. The 14 wickets at 20.14 is a far cry from his Test average of 157.00 during the same period. Bangladesh will depend on him with the middle and slog overs, with the hope that he finds his rhythm.Jason Holder celebrates a wicket•Getty Images

Team news

West Indies will have three automatic changes as Samuels, Carlos Brathwaite and Kemar Roach are not in the current ODI squad. Powell may get the nod ahead of Jason Mohammed while Russell will certainly take Brathwaite’s place as one of the pace-bowling allrounders. Joseph may play in place of Roach, which would leave Nurse out.West Indies (probable): 1 Chris Gayle, 2 Evin Lewis, 3 Shai Hope (wk), 4 Kieran Powell, 5 Shimron Hetmyer, 6 Jason Holder (capt), 7 Rovman Powell, 8 Andre Russell, 9 Devendra Bishoo, 10 Keemo Paul 11 Alzarri JosephBangladesh will be making two changes from their previous ODI, which was all the way back in January 27. Mohammad Mithun and Mohammad Saifuddin are out, with Liton likely to open with Tamim. Jayed and Hider have to wait for their turn to be part of the pace attack.Bangladesh (probable): 1 Tamim Iqbal, 2 Liton Das, 3 Sabbir Rahman, 4 Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), 5 Shakib Al Hasan 6 Mahmudullah, 7 Mosaddek Hossain , 8 Mehidy Hasan Miraz, 9 Mashrafe Mortaza (capt), 10 Rubel Hossain, 11 Mustafizur Rahman

Pitch and conditions

The Providence Stadium’s pitches were unpredictable when ODIs were last played here in 2017, but more recently in CPL and first-class matches, sides batting first couldn’t really kick on. There is a forecast of showers in the morning, so there could be a delayed start.

Stats and trivia

  • Chris Gayle and Mushfiqur Rahim have 500-plus runs in West Indies-Bangladesh ODIs, with both close to overtaking Marlon Samuels’ 523 runs, the top-scorer in this particular contest.
  • Evin Lewis is 32 runs short of completing 1,000 ODI runs, and if he does it in the first ODI, he will become the fourth West Indies batsman to have done it in 30 innings or less. Sir Vivian Richards still holds the world record for fastest to 1,000 ODI runs, having done it in 21 innings.
