David, Warner and Starc shine as Australia secure convincing win

Alzarri Joseph again bowled well for West Indies but their chase never really threatned

David Warner and Tim David produced sparkling innings as Australia wrapped up a 2-0 victory over a West Indies side still working into their World Cup build-up. Warner dominated the first half of the innings and David turned on the power in the latter stages before West Indies’ chase struggled to build a consistent tempo then faded away.Warner and Aaron Finch, who this time batted No. 3, added 85 for the second wicket of which Finch contributed 15. A brief wobble, where three wickets fell for five runs, was then righted by David who struck at over 200.Brandon King was the most assured of West Indies’ top order but when he charged and missed at Adam Zampa no one else threatened to take the chase on. Mitchell Starc top and tailed the innings to take a career-best 4 for 20.Related

Smith's T20 World Cup hopes hang by a thread as 'incredible' David shines again

West Indies now continue their preparations with two official warm-up matches against UAE and Netherlands while Australia – minus their first-choice bowlers and Glenn Maxwell – head to Perth to face England before two more games in Canberra.Warner goes it alone
It wasn’t so much Australia against West Indies early on, but Warner against West Indies. Of the 45 runs in the powerplay, Warner made 37. Of the 96 when he was dismissed, he had made 75. His first six was a sweep off Jason Holder’s slower ball and the timing was impeccable throughout with his last six, a straight drive off Obed McCoy, among the best of his strokes. Given the way he had dominated the scoring, and the fact the innings was only just past halfway, there were thoughts turning towards what could be possible when he was caught and bowled by Odean Smith.David fires, rest of middle order not so much
It was an innings of contrasts from Australia. While Warner motored, Finch stuttered with an ungainly 15 off 19 balls. Then as David lit up the latter part of the innings, life was much harder for Steven Smith who managed 17 off 16 deliveries. To add to that was Maxwell’s run out, which ultimately looked his error albeit Smith had started to come, and it meant another short stay. Maxwell’s lack of recent runs makes it a little curious he is missing the next game in Perth. However, David did what he has done so many times around the world in recent times – leather the ball into the stands with awesome power. And again he gave himself a little bit of time: 12 off 10 balls became 42 off 20 in the blink of an eye. When Mitchell Starc gets his yorker right, it really is a sight to behold•AFP/Getty Images

Over-rate issues
West Indies were so slow that they had to have an extra fielder inside the ring for the final two overs. But they contended with it well, the last two going for 16 runs as Australia didn’t quite pull off the ideal finish. After David’s dismissal they made just 21 off the last 19 deliveries. A big part in the good finish from West Indies was Alzarri Joseph who went for 11 in his last two, completing an impressive pair of outings early in the tour. Australia, too, were slow and bowled their last over with five inside the ring. Neither team faced severe consequences for this error tonight, but that may not be so lucky at the World Cup.Can West Indies find the batting balance?
Both powerplay scores were identical: 45 for 1. So it may seem harsh to single out West Indies, but the 24 dot balls they faced in the first six suggested there were a few runs left unscored. Australia faced 18 in the same period. The batters are still trying to find touch after a long journey, but there was a significant amount of swinging and missing, especially from Johnson Charles.Another Gabba special from Starc
It didn’t quite have the same impact or feeling as his first ball in the Ashes to Rory Burns, but Starc again did something special in his first over at the Gabba. After Kyle Mayers, who played a shot for the ages at Metricon Stadium, produced a wonderful straight drive for six, Starc somehow managed to grab hold of a fiercely struck straight drive in front of his shin. It was a good evening for Starc who also claimed the key wickets of Nicholas Pooran and Holder as West Indies never really threatened to chase the target. They have work to do before their World Cup begins.

Ibrahim, Shahidi, Naveen back in Afghanistan T20I squad for Ireland series

Ibrahim Zadran, Hashmatullah Shahidi and Naveen-ul-Haq have been named in Afghanistan’s 16-member squad for the five-match T20I series in Ireland. Spinners Qais Ahmad and Mujeeb ur Rahman, who were not part of Afghanistan’s series against Zimbabwe in June due to T20 Blast commitments, have been added as reserves. ESPNcricinfo understands that Mujeeb will be added to the main squad once he gets his visa sorted. Ihsanullah Janat, who made his T20I debut against Zimbabwe, has been left out.Opening batter Ibrahim was part of the ODI side for the Zimbabwe tour, but his last T20I was in November 2019 against West Indies. He has been in good form in the ongoing Shpageeza Cricket League, where he is currently the third highest run-getter with 283 runs in seven innings at an average of 56.60. Top-order batter Shahidi was also part of the ODI series against Zimbabwe and last played a T20I in March 2021. Fast bowler Naveen, who has not represented Afghanistan in any format since November last year, was the second highest wicket-taker in the T20 Blast this season, taking 24 wickets in 14 matches for Leicestershire.Top-order batter Usman Ghani and seam bowler Nijat Masood, who were part of the side that played against Zimbabwe, will also travel to Ireland as reserves along with Qais and Mujeeb.Mohammad Nabi continues to lead the side, which also includes 17-year-old left-arm spinner Noor Ahmad, who took 4 for 10 on his T20I debut against Zimbabwe in June.Former Afghanistan captain Gulbadin Naib was left out of the squad once again, after being dropped following the ODI series against Bangladesh in February. He was omitted from the T20I series of that tour and has not represented Afghanistan since. The series against Ireland comprises five T20Is in Belfast and starts on August 9. To avoid visa issues that have plagued Afghanistan of late, the Afghanistan Cricket Board had obtained UAE residency visas for nearly dozen players and officials.Afghanistan squad: Mohammad Nabi (capt), Rahmanullah Gurbaz (wk), Hazratullah Zazai, Ibrahim Zadran, Darwish Rasooli, Najibullah Zadran, Hashmatullah Shahidi, Afsar Zazai, Karim Janat, Azmatullah Omarzai, Sharfuddin Ashraf, Rashid Khan, Fazal Haq Farooqi, Farid Ahmed Malik, Naveen ul Haq, Noor Ahmed

Big upgrade on McNeil: Everton close in on sealing Moyes’ first signing

Fair to say, it’s been an eventful week at Everton.

On Thursday, mere hours before their FA Cup tie at home to Peterborough United, it was announced that Sean Dyche had been sacked, leaving Leighton Baines and club captain Séamus Coleman in caretaker charge, overseeing an unspectacular 2-0 victory.

Remarkably, this is the first time any Premier League club have sacked their manager on the day of a game, prior to kick off, for 30 years.

Everton manager Sean Dyche

Then, on Saturday morning, it was confirmed that David Moyes had returned, 13 years after leaving Merseyside for Manchester United, having overseen a whopping 518 matches during his first spell in charge.

With the Toffees currently 16th in the Premier League table, a mere one point clear of the relegation zone, reinforcements are needed, but could the first arrival of the second Moyes-era be imminent?

Everton want to bolster their forward line

According to a report by TEAMtalk, Everton are ‘in talks’ with Olympique Lyonnais over the signing of Ernest Nuamah.

Meanwhile, reports from France on social media claim the deal is only ‘one step away’ with an ‘agreement almost reached between the different parties.’

Numah joined Lyon from Danish Superligaen side Nordsjælland for a reported €30m in 2023, suggesting the Blues are unlikely to get him on the cheap.

However, as noted by Colin Millar, Matt Slater and Matt Woosnam of the Athletic, les Gones have been provisionally relegated from Ligue 1 “following an audit of their finances”, informed they must “satisfactorily improve their financial situation before the end of this season”.

Olympique Lyonnais'ErnestNuamahduring the match

As a result, Nuamah appears set to be sacrificed, although no Everton supporter should consider this a done deal until he has officially put pen to paper.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

That’s because, in the summer, Nuamah was reportedly on the verge of joining Fulham, only to “vanish” part-way through his medical, after breaking down in tears, declaring his love for OL and refusing to move to West London, with American owner John Texter subsequently forced to send an apology letter to the Cottagers.

Fair to say, the Toffees will be hoping to avoid similar complications.

How Ernest Nuamah compares to Dwight McNeil

Ghanian commentator George Addo Jnr on Twitter describes his compatriot as “some talent”, with journalist Owuraku Ampofo adding that he is “a fantastic dribbler”.

Wesley Mak of Opta’s The Analyst labels him as “a multi-functional forward” capable of playing anywhere across the front three, comparing him to West Ham’s Mohammed Kudus, another Ghanian attacker who began his career at the world-renowned Right to Dream Academy.

Well, considering Everton are the Premier League’s second-lowest scorers this season, ranked rock-bottom for xG, the Blues need all the attacking reinforcement they can get, but how does Nuamah compare to their joint-top scorer Dwight McNeil?

The table outlines that these two wingers are stylistically very different.

McNeil is much more a creator, hence why he’s accumulated significantly more assists and expected assists while, last season, only eight players across Europe’s “top five” leagues put in more crosses than his 229; Dyche-ball at its finest.

Dwight McNeil for Everton

Meanwhile, Nuamah is much more of a dribbler, registering more take-ons and progressive carries, with the Ghanian significantly more of a goal threat, bagging 15 goals during his final campaign at Nordsjælland, on target against such illustrious opponents as Paris Saint-Germain and Eintracht Frankfurt since making to move to Lyon.

Well, considering Everton have scored nil during eight of their last ten Premier League outings, failing to find the net in a whopping 39% of the league games Dyche took charge of, Nuamah will certainly be a welcome addition for all Evertonians.

Covid-positive Rohit faces race against time to play Edgbaston Test

Should Rohit miss the Test, Jasprit Bumrah will captain the team for the first time

Nagraj Gollapudi29-Jun-20224:04

Rohit has not yet been ruled out – Dravid

India captain Rohit Sharma is battling against the deadline to be available for the Edgbaston Test against England after testing positive for Covid-19 once again on Wednesday morning. ESPNcricinfo has learned that Rohit will undergo two further tests – one this evening and another on Thursday – before the Indian team management takes a final decision on his availability for the Test, which starts on Friday. Should Rohit miss the Test, Jasprit Bumrah will captain the side.Rohit, who tested positive on the second day of the warm-up match in Leicester last week, has been serving the five-day isolation as recommended by the UK government. Today was the fifth day, but Rohit was absent from India’s training session.”Rohit is being monitored by our medical team, he is not yet been ruled out,” head coach Rahul Dravid said. “Obviously, he needs to get the negative test to be available. So we will keep monitoring that, we’ve still got close to 36 hours to go. He will have a test later tonight and maybe one tomorrow morning as well. And then we’ll see.”Obviously, he’ll have to come out of that, and it’s really up to the medical team and sports science team to decide on that. We haven’t had a chance to see him, since he is in isolation. But we will keep monitoring the situation.”While there has been no official update from the BCCI on who will lead India in case Rohit doesn’t play in the Test, it is understood that Bumrah will take up the role. India didn’t nominate a vice-captain after KL Rahul, who was named Rohit’s deputy when the squad was picked in May, was ruled out having picked up a groin injury earlier this month.Bumrah was the vice-captain during India’s previous Test series, against Sri Lanka at home. He incidentally has never led in any form of cricket, so this will be his maiden captaincy stint. He will also become the first fast bowler to captain India since Kapil Dev.Speaking at a press conference ahead of the Sri Lanka series, Bumrah had said he would never “shy away” if he was given the opportunity to lead India. “If given an opportunity at any scenario, it would be an honour and I would never ever shy away from that, but it is something that I don’t go looking for,” Bumrah had said. Despite the lack of captaincy experience, Bumrah had said he remained confident of performing the leadership duties as he had grown in his role as a strike bowler both for India and at Mumbai Indians in the IPL.”Whatever role is asked of me, I would do it with the best ability. You are always a leader when you are a senior member of the team, so it’s just a post that comes with you. Basically, you try to help all the people in whatever capacity you can. Even in Mumbai Indians, you have got a lot of senior players but now I am one of the senior players as well, so you help the captain, you help everyone, you play the leadership role even when you are not asked to.”That’s how I look at it. I never want to [be the captain] just for personal satisfaction. It’s just a post, it’s just a name, you have to do your job and you have to help people in the best way you can.”‘We have got contingency plans’ – Dravid on captaincy scenario
If Bumrah walks out for the toss on Friday, he will be the eighth man to lead India since 2021. While Dravid agreed that is not the desired scenario, he felt that the coaching staff and players were well-equipped to handle that challenge.”It is what it is,” Dravid said. “When I took the job even I wouldn’t have predicted that there would have so many captains in the last six-seven months. That happens, right? In the times that we are living in, with Covid, there have been some unfortunate injuries to people. Even here, it is quite unfortunate what has happened to Rahul and Rohit in the last three weeks for us. And sometimes we’ve had to balance out the workloads of people. So it happens.”Of course, it is not something you envisage when you first start off, but if a situation arises then you react to that, you deal with that. And in spite of the number of captains we have had, we have played very good cricket over the last six to eight months. Yes, obviously the South Africa Test series was probably the one I would have liked to have won after going one-up. But even there I thought we were not outplayed, we were very close in a lot of those games. We had a few unfortunate injuries and some of our main players were probably not available for that Test series.”We are keeping our fingers crossed and hoping that we don’t have to deal with these situations, but they seem to come up and we have to react. We are not fazed by it. We are clear about our communication with people. We know what is going to happen over the next few days. If something happens, we have got contingency plans and, within our group, within our team, we know what’s happening. That’s really important for us.”

Dream Duran replacement: Aston Villa target the "perfect striker" for £46m

Aston Villa have had a very stop-start beginning to this campaign, winning eight games, drawing four games, and losing six in their opening 18 Premier League fixtures.

The Villans have scored 26 goals in their 18 Premier League games (ranked 11th in the division for goals scored), which looks poor in comparison to last season, where they scored 76 goals in 38 games (ranked 6th in the division for this metric).

Of their 26 goals so far this season, Jhon Duran and Ollie Watkins have the fair share, scoring 14 (seven each) of the 26 goals. But after last summer, where Duran attracted a lot of attention from other clubs – most notably West Ham United – Villa could be on high alert, should Duran want a move to secure consistent minutes.

With the January window just around the corner, Unai Emery and the Villa board will be compiling a list of potential replacements should Duran be sold, and one name in particular is already being touted in the media.

Aston Villa's search for a striker

According to reports from CaughtOffside, Aston Villa are keeping tabs on Atalanta forward, Mateo Retegui. The reports suggest the Italian outfit are not prioritising the sale of their player, but an offer of around €55m (£46m) would ‘force’ them to consider it.

Other Italian clubs are reportedly interested should the forward become available, with Roma, Napoli and Juventus all being mentioned. But if Duran does leave Villa in the January window, the Italian could be the perfect replacement to challenge Watkins.

Mateo Retegui for Atalanta.

The 25-year-old – who Villa are said to have sent scouts to watch in recent times – has made 25 appearances in all competitions so far this season, scoring 14 goals, providing four assists, and totalling 1,393 minutes played.

How Retegui compares to Duran

Compared to Watkins, Duran and Retegui offer a different type of profile, using their box presence and physicality to bully defenders, and get on the end of attacking moves, providing that finishing touch. On the other hand, Watkins is more of a channel runner, looking to stretch teams.

When comparing the three strikers, you can see Watkins offers more in the way of progressive carrying, and xAG (expected assisted goals) which matches the description used earlier for him, as more of a channel runner who gets involved in all phases.

However, Duran and Retegui, as advertised earlier on, have high shot volume, good aerial duel numbers, and are finishing at a very clinical level, getting on the end of attacking chances created for them, and helping to provide their side with key output.

If Aston Villa are to lose Duran, targeting someone like Retegui would be a good chance to retain the strike department dynamic for rotation in Premier League and Champions League fixtures, whilst keeping two different striker profiles at the club, in order to allow Emery to pick his forward based on game plan.

Described as the “perfect striker” by national team boss, Luciano Spalletti, the former Geno man could be a ‘perfect’ addition for those at Villa Park.
