The reigning Premier League champions have had at least 115 charges relating to supposed financial mismanagement hanging over their head since early 2023, when a four-year investigation into dealings at the Etihad Stadium was completed.

An independent hearing came to a close in late December, but no verdict has been delivered as yet. The expectation is that official word is now a matter of weeks away, with various punishments – ranging from points deductions to expulsion from the English top flight – being touted.

WHAT DAVID ORNSTEIN SAID

Journalist David Ornstein has told of where the protracted saga stands at present: “It’s just over two years ago since those charges and the feeling I get from speaking to people at and around the club is that we could be looking at a springtime verdict.

“So, maybe a month or two away and that feels pretty soon. Of course this is still subject to potential appeals in that process too, but the verdict would feel like a seismic moment whatever the outcome.”

City spent big again in the winter transfer window, bringing in the likes of Omar Marmoush and Nico Gonzalez, while prolific Norwegian striker Erling Haaland has been handed a lucrative 10-year contract. That business hints at the club being confident that they will avoid the harshest possible sanctions.

O’Riley 2.0: Celtic star was "shocking" for Rodgers, now he’s worth £42m

Celtic head coach Brendan Rodgers was dealt a blow during the summer transfer window when attacking midfielder Matt O’Riley moved on from Parkhead.

Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion swooped in to secure a deal for the Denmark international for a reported fee of an initial £25m ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

He was the talisman of the team last season for the Northern Irish head coach, with a fantastic return of 18 goals and 13 assists in 37 appearances in the Scottish Premiership.

Rodgers needed other players within the squad to step up after O’Riley moved down south and, as their mesmerising Champions League victory over RB Leipzig showed, they haven’t missed him.

Evoking memories of that famous night in Glasgow where Tony Watt scored the winner against Barcelona, Rodgers’ charges put in one of the best displays we’ve seen in Europe from the Hoops.

It looked like another fateful evening when the German side took the lead but the Bhoys responded emphatically well through Reo Hatate and Nicolas Kuhn, the man of the moment.

His first few weeks in Celtic colours weren’t the best but he’s revived himself to become an undroppable figure at Parkhead.

Nicolas Kuhn's start to life at Celtic

The German forward moved to Parkhead from Austrian side Rapid Vienna for a reported fee of £3m during the January transfer window, shortly followed by the arrival of Adam Idah on loan.

His first goal, assisted by Idah, came in just his second appearance for the club, as the forward deflected a low, left-footed, effort into the bottom corner in a draw with Aberdeen.

However, the 24-year-old ace did not really kick on after that moment and ended the campaign with a return of two goals and two assists in 14 outings in the Premiership.

Celtic supporter, and actor and PR/communications worker, James Matheson claimed that Kuhn was “shocking” in his first few games for the Scottish giants, and the statistics show that the winger did not enjoy the most prolific start to his time in Glasgow.

The left-footed magician has, though, kicked on in his first full season at Parkhead and has emerged as O’Riley 2.0 for Rodgers, as a forward who can contribute with goals and assists on a regular basis.

How Nicolas Kuhn now compares to O'Riley

In the 2024/25 campaign, the former Rapid Vienna star has produced a stunning nine goals and ten assists in 16 appearances in all competitions, more than one goal contribution per game on average.

Two of those nine goals came in the 3-1 win over RB Leipzig in the Champions League at Parkhead on Tuesday, the first of which was a terrific curling effort from distance.

As you can see in the table below, Kuhn is tracking at similar numbers, as a scorer and a creator, to O’Riley from last season, with his play in the Premiership.

He has emerged as an unplayable forward for opposition defences, as illustrated by his incredible return of goals and assists across all competitions, and that has led to plenty of praise.

In fact, journalist Ryan McGinlay hailed his first goal against Leipzig as “unbelievable” and said that the winger should now be worth a whopping €50m (£42m).

Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg recently claimed that several Premier League clubs have enquired about the Celtic forward and Rodgers may now be hoping that he does not lose his new O’Riley just a few months after the Danish star’s own departure.

Derby have struck gold on star who’s worth more than Mendez-Laing & Cashin

Derby County have adjusted to life back in the Championship rather well, picking up two victories from their four league games to date to not be dangerously close to the relegation drop-zone.

A number of new recruits have settled in swimmingly too, with Kayden Jackson the pick of the bunch from the fresh faces that have joined the building this summer, having picked up two goals and an assist from his four individual contests in the second tier.

Away from the whole host of new purchases strengthening Paul Warne’s men already, both Nathaniel Mendez-Laing and Eiran Cashin – who represent the old guard from last campaign’s promotion heroics – have also not looked out of their depth moving up a league.

Mendez-Laing and Cashin's stats so far this season

It won’t come as a shock to any Derby supporter that both Mendez-Laing and Cashin remain as key names on Warne’s team sheet, with both the Rams number 11 and the Rams number six only missing one game between them so far in league action.

Mendez-Laing would start this campaign in lightning-quick fashion, helping himself to two assists on the opening day to prove he still has what it takes to perform in the second tier, even as his employers fell to a disappointing 4-2 defeat.

Derby County defenderEiran Cashin.

Cashin might well have been in the heart of defence for that crushing loss at Ewood Park, but he has redeemed himself since, with the 22-year-old very much playing his part in the Rams keeping back-to-back home clean sheets against Middlesbrough and Bristol City recently, as two home wins were also collected.

The one-time Brighton and Hove Albion target would complete three tackles and win five duels versus the Robins, which would see his side then grow in confidence going forward knowing that the defence behind them was unlikely to be breached, with three goals then soaring in.

Another of Warne’s summer buys in Kenzo Goudmijn would open the scoring against Liam Manning’s men, with the Dutchman enjoying a wonderful start to life in Derbyshire too, which has seen his transfer value already rocket up.

Goudmijn's transfer value in 2024

Purchased for a reasonable £690k from Eredivisie titans AZ Alkmaar back in July, Warne would admit at the time that the Rams sealing a deal for such a cut-price was a “no brainer”.

Goudmijn would help himself to seven goals and 11 assists as a promising young talent in the U21 structure at Alkmaar before spreading his wings to move to England, after 20 first-team appearances also came his way for the Dutch side.

Constantly peppering Max O’Leary’s net with five shots registered in total against the Robins, Goudmijn looked very lively in the middle of the park alongside David Ozoh and Ebou Adams, as Derby’s left-field business picking up the 22-year-old from the Netherlands looks to be paying off.

His value has already increased to around the £2.3m mark as a result, according to Football Transfers, with Mendez-Laing and Cashin surprisingly worth less now.

Warne will know he can continue to rely on the stellar first-team pair moving forward regardless, as they were key parts of the jigsaw that saw the Rams finally return back to the Championship last season, even as their values come in at a lesser £759k and £1.4m respectively.

Already, it seems as if Warne has a squad that is capable of staying put in the second tier, but the many twists and turns to come in the division will be challenging all the same for the Rams.

Man Utd hit gold on "monster" Ten Hag signing who’s worth more than Ugarte

Manchester United have strengthened across the board this summer, but there's one prominent transfer thread yet to have been conclusively wrapped up.

Manuel Ugarte did not enjoy the most auspicious of debut campaigns, signing for Paris Saint-Germain from Sporting Lisbon in a £51m deal last summer, but the 23-year-old has attracted Old Trafford's attention due to his steely skillset and wide expanse of growth still ahead.

Manuel Ugarte for PSG

He no doubt has a tough journey ahead, but then Ugarte has all the properties to establish himself as a leading player in the Premier League.

Why Manuel Ugarte could succeed at Man United

As per Fabrizio Romano, United are closing in on signing Ugarte; at this stage, it would be a surprise to all parties if a deal were to fall through.

Transfer talks between the two outfits have been protracted but a resolution is indeed close, with a loan move with an obligation to buy suggested as one possible solution. Ugarte, for his part, is desperate to journey to the Theatre of Dreams.

He's also a high-class distributor, ranking among the top 6% of central midfielders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for pass completion, as per FBref. Sure, he's not the most expansive with his passing, but a crisp and secure body in the centre is exactly what the Red Devils need.

By adding him to the mix and providing an upgrade on Casemiro, the likes of Kobbie Mainoo could operate with greater freedom, while Bruno Fernandes could be more secure in his all-encompassing creative dominance.

All this, in turn, would spill over to Ten Hag's frontline, where centre-forward Rasmus Hojlund might finally receive the service that his prolific quality deserves.

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes

Despite a testing debut campaign in Greater Manchester, the young Dane has actually seen his market value shoot up after United paid £72m to Atalanta for his signature, and one can only imagine how far he might rise if Ugarte's arrival issues the desired chain reaction.

Rasmus Hojlund's market value in 2024

According to CIES Football Observatory's player valuation model, Hojlund currently boasts a maximum market price of £103m, bearing testament to his prodigious potential and indeed just how well-regarded he is.

This would place him some £52m above Ugarte, who might end up joining on an initial loan but would later cost a €60m (£51m) figure.

Last year, he scored ten goals from 30 matches in the Premier League despite blanking until Boxing Day, also proving to be a shining light from United's bleak Champions League campaign, bagging five goals from six outings.

To back up that point about an absence of service, Man United ranked joint-12th in the Premier League last season for big chances created, alongside Bournemouth, so Hojlund really did struggle to find the kind of support he needed to perform at his apex.

Once predicted to become a "monster" of a striker by Reading head coach Ruben Selles, Hojlund proved that he could score goals despite his young years and lack of playmaking support.

Now, United are moving up a gear or three, and he could now grow into one of the continent's star strikers.

Surprise move: Man Utd target "extraordinary" UCL winner who's like De Ligt

The experienced international could be a clever addition to the team.

Suggestion Arsenal are prepared to pay £60m to sign "unplayable" striker

There has been a suggestion this week that Arsenal would be prepared to pay up to £60 million for a very highly-rated striker, as manager Mikel Arteta scours the market for another attacking option.

Arteta wants striking partner for Havertz at Arsenal

The Gunners have been linked with a new striker ever since the beginning of this summer window.

Club reply as Arsenal make opening bid to sign "creative" player this week

It’s been tabled in the last two days.

ByEmilio Galantini Aug 15, 2024

Arsenal did attempt to sign Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig earlier this summer, as did Man United and Chelsea, but the Slovenia international starlet rejected all three proposals to remain at his current club and sign a contract extension.

Arteta apparently wants a striking partner for Havertz, despite the German finishing his debut campaign at the Emirates Stadium very strongly with 14 goals and seven assists in 51 appearances across all competitions.

A prolific new marksman has long been viewed as the final missing piece of Arteta's jigsaw, with former Arsenal star Bacary Sagna explaining that they need a target man in the mould of ex-star Olivier Giroud.

"Arsenal need to be stronger and be more attacking going forward," the former full-back told Paddy Power (via The Metro).

"This season, scoring goals was a problem for them. They could add a proper striker – a number nine. Arsenal are playing well but they can improve on crossing the ball – they hold the ball well generally, but occasionally they’ll need to cross it more.

‌"I’m happy with Gabriel Jesus, as long as he stays fit, but they still have to have cover. I would go for someone like Olivier Giroud, someone physical who can hold the ball quite well and support the team if they’re struggling.

"They need someone who can wait in the box and help out offensively and defensively."

Arsenal reportedly maintain a loose interest in Ivan Toney of Brentford for the role, while Sporting Lisbon star Viktor Gyokeres has also attracted their attention this summer.

Suggestion Arsenal would pay up to £60m for Gyokeres

Journalist Steve Kay, speaking on KS1TV (via The Boot Room), suggests Arsenal would pay up to £60 million to sign Gyokeres from Sporting – and he made the claim when discussing their interest in Newcastle midfielder Bruno Guimaraes.

Sporting CP strikerViktor Gyokeres.

"If he (Guimaraes) became available, similarly to Gyokeres, at about £50-60m, I’m sure he’d be someone we’d be looking at, but at the price they want, I think they more or less immediately said no," said Kay.

The Sweden international's contract includes an £86 million release clause, with the "unplayable" striker scoring 43 goals in just 50 appearances across all competitions last season.

Franklin replaces Steyn as Sunrisers' bowling coach for IPL 2024

ESPNcricinfo understands that Steyn has pulled out of the tournament for personal reasons

Nagraj Gollapudi02-Mar-2024Former New Zealand allrounder James Franklin will replace Dale Steyn as the bowling coach of Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2024. ESPNcricinfo has learned that Steyn, who was appointed in the role by Sunrisers in 2022, has pulled out for personal reasons. For Franklin, who played for Mumbai Indians in 2011 and 2012, this will be his first coaching stint at the IPL. At Sunrisers, Franklin, a former left-arm seam-bowling allrounder, will link up with Daniel Vettori, who was appointed as the head coach by the franchise after the 2023 season. The pair has previously worked together at both Middlesex (county cricket) as well as Birmingham Phoenix (the Hundred). Franklin had also served as a head coach at Durham, and currently is at the PSL as an assistant coach at Islamabad United.Related

Sunrisers have a host of quicks in their ranks including Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Pat Cummins, Marco Jansen, Umran Malik, T Natarajan, Fazalhaq Farooqi, Jaydev Unadkat and the uncapped Indian Akash Singh. The spinners’ lot include Wanindu Hasaranga, Washington Sundar and Shahbaz Ahmed.Vettori and Franklin will be confronted with a stiff challenge considering Sunrisers had finished eighth in 2022 and slid further to tenth last year. One key contributing factor for the team’s regression has been the frequent change in leadership. Former Australia allrounder Tom Moody was replaced last year by former West Indies captain Brian Lara, who was dropped after just one season.Heading into the 2023 player auction, Sunrisers released one of their most senior players in Kane Williamson, who had led the franchise since David Warner was released in 2021. Williamson played for Sunrisers for eight seasons, including the title-winning run in 2016 and was retained in 2022 as their most expensive player. Since last season, South Africa batter Aiden Markram has held the captaincy.
