Aston Villa line up £52m "magician" who’d be perfect for Barkley

Aston Villa are at a critical juncture in their journey under Unai Emery. Now that the dust has settled following the euphoria of qualifying for the Champions League with a fourth-place Premier League finish, the hard graft must begin.

Of course, competitive club football will not be contested until mid-August, but the interim must see some shrewd and purposeful work conducted in the transfer market.

Luton midfielder Ross Barkley

Ross Barkley is closing on a shrewd return to Villa Park after spending a season on loan under Dean Smith in 2020/21, but Monchi is moving swiftly and has entered the race for an exciting attacking talent.

Aston Villa transfer news

As per Spanish sources, Aston Villa are in the mix to sign Barcelona winger Raphinha. The La Liga giants would be reluctant to part ways due to concerns about finding a replacement, though he is valued at €60m (£52m) and such a bid could be too tempting to ignore.

Barcelona star Raphinha.

Emery's team are up against Premier League heavyweights Chelsea and Manchester United, though both superpowers fail to offer something that Villa have in their clutches: Champions League football.

How Raphinha could fit in at Aston Villa

Signed from Leeds United in a deal worth up to £55m in 2022, Raphinha has scored 20 goals and added 25 assists from 87 matches for Barcelona, winning the 2022/23 La Liga title.

He has, however, only started 43 league matches across the two campaigns, and at 27 years old he will be eager to play a prominent role that reflects his patent quality, described as a "magician" by former Whites teammate Dan James.

Raphinha might not have had the easiest time in Catalonia but he has maintained an impressive level of potency throughout, ranking among the top 13% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals, the top 1% for assists and the top 12% for shot-creating actions per 90, as per FBref.

If the Brazilian can translate such qualities back to the Premier League, Villa would land a real asset to aid them as they take a seat among Europe's elite.

The 5 foot 9 winger's stylistically similar Premier League players would certainly speak of a tailor-made ability for Emery's squad, with Raphinha scoring 11 goals and adding three assists from 34 Premier League starts for Leeds during his last campaign in England.

Principally, Raphinha would sit on the right and look to maximise his playmaking skills by hitting winding balls above hapless heads and threading surgical passes through to the forward-surging Ollie Watkins, Jhon Duran.

Barcelona winger Raphinha.

But to achieve this, he would find a brilliant partner from deep in the aforementioned Barkley, who was remarked to be "not far off Player of the Season" by Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson after his excellent campaign with Luton Town.

As per Sofascore, Barkley posted five goals and four assists from 32 top-flight appearances in 2023/24, completing 85% of his balls and averaging 1.5 key passes, tackles and clearances, 2.1 dribbles, 6.3 ball recoveries and 6.1 successful duels per game.

The 6 foot 2 Englishman ranks among the top 15% of midfielders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for shot-creating actions and the top 1% for successful take-ons per 90, effectively using his pace and power to plough forward and rent open midfield structures, freeing up space for Raphinha.

A dynamic and creative new partnership could be formed with these signings, allowing Emery's system to shift through the phases and fire on all cylinders next season, both domestically and overseas.

Aston Villa eyeing "special" signing who'd be more exciting than Barkley

Aston Villa are close to signing Ross Barkley but another exciting talent could be on the way.

Contact made: Tottenham now in talks to sign "remarkable" £30m defender

Tottenham are lining up another raid on Serie A in a bid to bolster their backline this summer, it has emerged.

Spurs' Serie A success

Italy has been a happy hunting ground for Tottenham of late. Since 2021, much of their summer budget has been spent in Serie A, and it has reaped rewards with the likes of Destiny Udogie, Rodrigo Bentancur and Guglielmo Vicario all starring in north London.

Of the permanent deals completed, only Ivan Perisic has left the club and the others remain key parts of the squad. Those additions have helped the Lilywhites enjoy their best Premier League season in a long time, with Ange Postecoglou's side playing an exciting style of football and, for the most part, getting the results to go with it.

Spurs leading race to sign "wonderkid" who's as exciting as Bergvall

The Lilywhites are reportedly in pole position to sign the talented youngster this summer.

By
Dan Emery

Apr 25, 2024

They have hit something of a hitch in recent weeks, with the Lilywhites now six points behind Aston Villa in the race for the final Champions League spot. Though they have two games in hand on the Villans, they also have to play all of the top three in their final six games of the season, and will probably realistically have to win four of their last six games to stand any chance of finishing fourth. Despite that, it remains a season of progress, and now they are set to return to the Serie A in a bid to progress further next time around.

Spurs in talks to sign Serie A defender

That is according to Italian outlet CalcioMercato, who reports that Tottenham have started initial contacts over a possible move for impressive Torino defender Alessandro Buongiorno this summer.

Italy defenderAlessandro Buongiorno.

The centre-back has strung together a series of fine performances in the last 18 months, earning a call-up to the Italian national team in the process, and has reportedly also caught the eye of Napoli and AC Milan, though it is added that they may struggle to put together an offer as tempting as Tottenham's.

Buongiorno has come in for plenty of praise this season, not least from U23 talent scout Jacek Kulig, who dubbed him "one of the most underrated defenders in Italy" and a "remarkable player" earlier this month.

He may not be a particularly expensive signing for the Lilywhites, with Torino reportedly holding out for €35m (£30m) to let the 24-year-old leave. With Eric Dier having left north London and all of Joe Rodon, Japhet Tanganga and Ben Davies all seemingly set to follow suit, another addition in defence may be needed. Could Spurs pull another rabbit out of their Serie A hat?

India jubilant as Srinath, Kumble pull off improbable victory

Tendulkar played his part, but India found two unlikely batting heroes to deliver a tense win

The RetroReport by Shashank Kishore10-May-2020Title sponsors have a huge recall value when fans revisit memorable classics. Many Indians still refer to the 1983 World Cup as the Prudential World Cup. The 1987 edition, which India hosted for the first time, is fondly remembered as the Reliance World Cup. The 1985 World Series, made famous by Ravi Shastri and his Audi, is often referred to as the Benson & Hedges World Series. Many years from now, this India v Australia clash will be remembered as Titan Cup fixture in Bangalore. The match had everything. Some fine new-ball bowling from local lads Javagal Srinath and Venkatesh Prasad, electric fielding from Ajay Jadeja, a slow-paced but a well-constructed century from Mark Taylor that helped Australia post 215 and a fiery spell from a wiry Glenn McGrath, backed by relentless support from Jason Gillespie, that triggered a top-order wobble. Then there was a collision involving Jadeja and McGrath and, of course, Sachin Tendulkar being at the front and centre of India’s chase. That wasn’t it. There was debatable umpiring and crowd trouble, too, when Mohammad Azharuddin fell to what he felt was a shocking lbw decision, when in reality, he had only himself to blame. India were only three down by then, but the signs were ominous. Memories of Eden Gardens from a few months ago came rushing back. But sanity prevailed and play resumed after a 20-minute delay. The break didn’t change India’s fortunes drastically as they lost Sourav Ganguly almost immediately to a brain freeze from Tendulkar. The Indian captain froze halfway through a second that he wanted, by which time Ganguly had reached a point of no return. The alarm bells were ringing and India’s chances hinged on Tendulkar, like it so often does these days.He batted for a better part of the chase, shelving his natural game in the middle overs for hard-run singles, apart from sweeping and picking left-arm wristspinner Brad Hogg for crucial boundaries to ensure the asking rate never got out of hand. But his dismissal which quickly followed Nayan Mongia’s and Sunil Joshi’s left India at 164 for 8 in pursuit of 216.Enter local boys Anil Kumble and Srinath, with their mums cheering and screaming for every run they scored, every ball they defended and every boundary they hit. The ninth-wicket pair held their nerve, combated the McGrath-Gillespie threat and eventually scripted a great escape. India needed 52 when they joined hands. The stands were starting to thin, but those who stayed back got their monies worth.Kumble is a nudger at the best of times, Srinath a little more eccentric and enterprising. He fancies a good-old slog and when he connects, they sail. It’s this mix of ice and fire that had 40,000 faithfuls biting their fingernails off in the face of an asking rate that had spiralled to over a run-a-ball. As the equation narrowed, the crowd stated to heave. Australia felt the pressure and when it was down to single digits, not even the nerves of the occasion could fray the two local boys, who ensured India ended up winners. As many as six Karnataka players were part of India’s XI in this game. At that World Cup quarter-final game, Venkatesh Prasad was the hero. Here, it was his close friends who became overnight sensations. Joshi strangled Australia in the middle overs with some tight bowling, but the two batsmen – Sujith Somasunder and Rahul Dravid had outings to forget. If facing Brian McMillan and Allan Donald may have been intimidating enough in Hyderabad, Somasunder ran into McGrath here, looking all over the place against the short ball. He was roughed up so much that a sucker ball – an inswinging yorker – had his stumps in a mess. However, these are blips India would want to look at later, for this win came at the right time following a string of ODI failures post their infamous World Cup semi-final, in Singapore, Sharjah, Sri Lanka and Toronto. For Australia, Taylor’s industrious century was some consolation. It was his slow but steady partnership with Steve Waugh that lifted Australia after the innings meandered around the three-run-per-over mark for much of the first half. After Waugh’s dismissal, Michael Bevan added some much needed-urgency, but it felt as if Australia fell much shorter than they would’ve liked to finish with. But, their bowling attack made their total of 215 look bigger. It so happened that they ran into an inspired lower order and Tendulkar, yet again. In Mumbai, at the World Cup, they got away. In Bangalore, they couldn’t pull off a coup.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Despite their woeful financial condition, the Catalan giants made the marquee signing of Spain's Euro 2024 hero Olmo as they agreed to pay €55m (£46m) upfront and €7m (£5m) in add-ons to RB Leipzig. However, while the player has already arrived at the club and has started training, he is yet to be registered with La Liga.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

After missing the club's season opener last weekend due to the same issue, Olmo is now hoping that the registration process gets completed in time so that he can finally make his debut for the club. Hansi Flick has included the 26-year-old in the matchday squad that will take on Athletic Club on Saturday, however, the club put an asterisk beside the player's name signifying his participation is subject to registration.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

The Blaugrana have parted ways with Ilkay Gundogan, who returned to Manchester City and Vitor Roque is on his way to join Real Betis on loan. However, the two departures are not enough as they need to offload a few more players before they can accommodate the Spain international.

Cellino’s Leeds flop who was ‘the new Zico’ now hasn’t had a game in 23/24

Leeds United, when owned by Massimo Cellino, were nothing short of a non-stop circus with a constant managerial merry-go-round in West Yorkshire and a whole host of flops entering and leaving Elland Road in a flash.

One of the most bewildering transfer windows under Cellino's ownership would come about in the summer before the 2014/15 campaign kicked off, with the likes of forgotten Whites figures Giuseppe Bellusci and Souleymane Doukara joining from Italy alongside a then fresh-faced Liam Cooper arriving from Chesterfield.

There was another notable dud that Leeds fans might have forgotten about from this rollercoaster time in the club's recent history, however, who was being lined up to stay in England on a permanent deal for £3m if his time went swimmingly after an initial loan.

Instead, the now 29-year-old attacking midfielder in question finds himself lost to the Whites history books having made just 13 appearances in total during a strange loan switch.

Massimo Cellino

Adryan's time at Leeds

Once described as being the 'new Zico', it's fair to say Adryan never quite managed to live up to that outrageous label whilst with Leeds and failed to really ever get to the same heights of the South American great's illustrious career after his whirlwind time at Elland Road was up.

The tag mainly came about due to Adryan's expertise at deftly scoring free-kicks mirroring that of Zico's, with his reputation in the game enough for Cellino to gamble on signing him.

Joining as a statement signing financed by the controversial Cellino, the Brazilian midfielder failed to ever spark into life in his new English surroundings after starring in his native country for Flamengo.

In Brazil, Adryan would garner a reputation for being a skilful and unpredictable threat on the ball who always attempted to weave his way through a swarm of opposition bodies to create something.

That would see the diminutive 5 foot 9 creator pick up two goals and five assists from 45 appearances for Flamengo, before joining Cagliari first in a trio of topsy-turvy loan switches.

Adryan would struggle in Italy making just five appearances for the Serie A outfit before returning home, only for the tricky midfielder's bad luck away from South America following him to Leeds.

Full Leeds lineup for Adryan's Championship debut Leeds vs Rotherham, 2-1 defeat, October 2014

1. GK – Marco Silvestri

2. RB – Gaetano Berardi

3. CB – Giuseppe Bellusci

4. CB – Jason Pearce

5. LB – Stephen Warnock

6. RM – Alex Mowatt

7. CM – Rodolph Austin

8. CM – Tommaso Bianchi

9. LM – Lewis Cook (Adryan)

10. ST – Mirco Antenucci

11. ST – Souleymane Doukara

Sourced by Transfermarkt

Adryan would manage to make double the appearances he managed in Italy relocating to West Yorkshire, but that's not to say the transition to EFL football went swimmingly for the slick midfielder.

It would take until October of his much-talked-about loan spell for Adryan to get any minutes in a Leeds shirt, drafted in to play 27 minutes against Rotherham United in place of Lewis Cook.

The hyped-up Brazilian would only manage 12 more games for Leeds before heading back to Flamengo after this substitute appearance versus the Millers, only registering two assists and going goalless throughout.

His forgettable spell in England is more well known for the above incident against Derby County, going down theatrically after being caught by Rams man Johnny Russell rather innocuously.

The prospective £3m deal that was on the cards would never come to fruition as a result of Adryan flopping at Elland Road, with the 5 foot 9 man becoming somewhat of a nomad elsewhere in his intriguing career since.

Adryan

The Brazilian midfielder did manage to breathe some life back into his career right after waving Leeds goodbye, however, putting his Whites demons to one side by going on to star in France and Switzerland.

Adryan's career after leaving Leeds

Adryan would go on to line up for FC Nantes directly after Leeds, ending up finally succeeding away from parent club Flamengo in the process.

The now 29-year-old would bag seven goals from 30 appearances playing in Ligue 1, helping himself to a further two assists also along the way.

It would be with FC Sion however – after leaving behind Flamengo permanently – where Adryan would begin to thrive and excel with seven goals scored from just 18 games during his debut campaign at the Swiss employers.

Yet, even with the Brazilian managing another seven the next season to take his goal tally to an impressive 14 from 49 games played, Adryan would begin to hunt for a new home again when loaned away various times from Sion.

The enigmatic former Leeds man's varied career path even saw him reunite with Cellino at Brescia last year, the divisive ex-Whites chairman utilising his past connections to sway the well-travelled Brazilian to stop off in Italy again.

Yet, that move saw Adryan score just one goal from nine games with the South American then being chucked.

Now, the 29-year-old – who went on trial at Hibernian in January – will look to shake off his journeyman tag back in his native Brazil with ABC Futebol Clube after failing to ever really reach the heights expected him wherever he's ended up.

Adryan's next move

The one-time £3.8k-per-week Whites dud fell victim to the hype that surrounded him early into his career, undoubtedly going down as a waste of money and time from a Leeds perspective among many other flops in the Cellino era.

Now, however, Adryan – who is yet to make an appearance for any club in 2023/24 – will hope he can remain grounded back on home soil and get back to loving his football after relocating non-stop from club to club during his turbulent career.

Leeds United manager Daniel Farke.

There won't be any bad blood between the Whites and Adryan now however, with Adryan's stay in West Yorkshire now just put down as a lasting memory from a bemusing time period in the club's recent history.

That span of time arguably looks even more comical now, when compared to the stability and success of Daniel Farke and Co in the present.

Leeds played a blinder with exit of £1.5m man who's now in League Two

The Whites struck gold in hindsight when they raked in money for his services as a teenager.

Danny Rohl takes "major" action after Middlesbrough 2-0 Sheff Wed

Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl has taken a "major" action to lift his side after Monday's 2-0 defeat to Middlesbrough.

Damaging defeat at Riverside

The Owls were back in Championship action on Easter Monday, making the trip to Boro for an important clash, but the performance they produced at the Riverside Stadium left a lot to be desired. In the end, Rohl's side were comprehensively beaten by their opponents, who also missed a penalty late in the day, with the visitors only having 35% possession in the game and managing just two shots on target.

For a Wednesday team who are battling for their lives at the bottom of the Championship, it was a display lacking intent, quality and heart, and the manager was not remotely amused after the game.

It was a rollocking that was richly deserved, considering how poor the display was, and the hope is that it produces a reaction in the coming matches.

Journalist reacts to big Rohl's rant

Taking to X, Alex Miller shared his thoughts on Rohl's angry reaction to Wednesday's loss at Middlesbrough, saying it feels like a potentially deciding moment in the run-in.

"Danny Rohl's angry, public post-match hairdryer felt like a major moment, a signal that the time for niceties is over. He'd sought to protect his players before by sticking his own hand up after heavy defeats. The reaction will be fascinating."

It did definitely feel significant that Rohl essentially decided to call his players out, having spent so much time backing them since arriving as manager earlier in the season, even when a performance or a result hasn't been good enough. Monday's performance appeared to be one too many for the German, however, who will be demanding so much more from his players between now and the end of the season.

Other results didn't go Wednesday's way during the afternoon, too, with the likes of Blackburn Rovers, Birmingham City and QPR all winning, and they will return to League One if there isn't a major improvement, starting away to the latter on Saturday afternoon.

There are still six matches remaining for the Owls, and only two points separate them from safety, but if they play in such a feeble manner in the last few fixtures, they will have little to no hope of avoiding the drop, ruining all of the manager's hard work.

O’Neil benches Gomes in predicted Wolves lineup vs Brighton

Wolverhampton Wanderers are in excellent form as of late, winning three of their last four matches in the Premier League.

Last weekend, Gary O'Neil's side narrowly overcame bottom-of-the-table Sheffield United, beating them 1-0 at home, with the three points pushing them into ninth in the table.

However, their attention will turn to the FA Cup this week as the Wanderers welcome Brighton & Hove Albion to the Molineux.

Not many changes will be made or needed from the weekend, but it is expected that a strong team will be fielded – with just three potential alterations in store. Therefore, let’s take a look at the starting lineup that could see Wolves progress to the next round.

1

GK – Jose Sa

Jose Sa is the number one shot-stopper for Wolves, and he is expected to start once again, just like he did in the previous round against West Bromwich Albion.

2

RCB – Max Kilman

Max Kilman

Max Kilman’s leadership will be important on Wednesday, and he has started every single game bar one this season.

3

CB – Santiago Bueno

Santiago Bueno hasn’t been handed a real opportunity yet by O’Neil, starting just twice in the league, but he should feature in the lineup tomorrow ahead of an ageing Craig Dawson.

4

LCB – Toti Gomes

Toti Gomes has been excellent this campaign, and his performance against the Blades will guarantee him a place.

The Portuguese defender won 11 duels while also having 102 touches on Sunday.

5

RM – Matt Doherty

Nelson Semedo is the player to be replaced by Matt Doherty, who has started all three FA Cup games this campaign.

6

CM – Mario Lemina

Mario Lemina should keep his place in the side after impressing at the weekend, making four tackles and two key passes.

The midfielder has also been immense all season, starting 23 times in the league.

7

CM – Tommy Doyle

Tommy Doyle

Tommy Doyle has performed incredibly well when called upon this campaign, and he should return to the side in place of Joao Gomes.

The 22-year-old scored a worldie against Brentford in the first FA Cup tie, helping Wolves progress.

He was also a "stand-out" against West Brom in the Black Country derby, as per journalist Liam Keen, taking 87 touches and controlling the tie from the first whistle to the last.

8

LM – Rayan Ait Nouri

Rayan Ait Nouri was the creator of Wolves' only goal on Sunday, and he will keep his place in the left-wing back role.

9

RF – Pablo Sarabia

Pablo Sarabia was the player who headed home the Algerian’s sublime cross, and his threat in the final third will be needed against Brighton.

10

LF – Pedro Neto

Wolves winger Pedro Neto.

Wolves’ biggest creator in the Premier League with nine assists will continue to prove to be undroppable, and he is one of the first names on the teamsheet.

The Portuguese ace also scored the opener against West Brom in the previous round.
