One such player is Mikey Johnston, the £10k-per-week 22-year-old who has so far failed to score a single goal over his 18 outings in all competitions this season, with Willie Miller going as far to describe the winger’s performance against Hibernian in the League Cup final as “pathetic.”

And, with the academy graduate being linked with a move to Aberdeen this January, it would seem a very wise move for Postecoglou to allow the winger to depart for Pittodrie, and subsequently make a move to bring Ferhat in as his replacement.

Indeed, over his 33 Ligue 1 appearances for Nimes’ last time out, the £4.05m-rated forward was in astonishing form, scoring six goals, providing ten assists and creating nine big chances for his teammates, as well as an average of taking 1.9 shots and making 1.6 key passes per game.

These returns saw the £13k-per-week Algeria international earn a sensational seasonal SofaScore match rating of 7.07, ranking him by far and away as his side’s best performer in the top flight of French football.

As such, it would indeed appear as if the Nimes winger would be a huge upgrade on many of Postecoglou’s current options out wide – Johnston included – leading us to hold the belief that the 56-year-old must make a move for the player who has 82 career assists to his name before the end of the month.

It’s a script that never seems to go stale. Sri Lanka have yet again disposed India from a multi-nation tournament. They were splendid today; they hustled on the field, the spinners kept hauling them back when India threatened to break free, and Dinesh Chandimal made the chase look ridiculously easy with a charming ton.Sometimes desperate situations, like the must-win situation for India, force one to make the right decisions. India made two shows of intent: Yusuf Pathan was promoted to No. 4 and the batting Powerplay was taken in the 18th over. Sometimes the best intentions may not be enough.Sometimes the hunter becomes the hunted: If India were to get the bonus point that would have helped them in the quest to enter the final, they had to restrict Sri Lanka to 214 but for a while it appeared that it was Sri Lanka who were going for the bonus point, with Chandimal going on to become their youngest ODI centurion.Sometimes an unknown like Chandimal pulls off a blinder of an innings. When Tillakaratne Dilshan fell after a breezy 21, Sri Lanka were at 29 for 1 and you wondered whether they might slow down, if not stutter, but Chandimal unfurled an attractive innings to ensure that the run-rate never dropped. He impressed with his shot selection, his footwork and his aggressive bent of mind: he walked down the track to lift Pankaj Singh over mid-on, welcomed Pragyan Ojha into the attack with a six over long-off and later smashed him over long-on and crashed R Ashwin over long-off and long-on. Two instances stood out for Sri Lanka’s tenacity: Ajantha Mendis bowled two overs that yielded just six runs in the batting Powerplay; and Suraj Randiv removed both Yusuf and Rohit Sharma to pull India back from a comfortable situation. Even the third spinner Jeevan Mendis bowled a tight spell in the middle as India, who were at 125 for 2 in 23.5 overs struggled to 187 for 5 in 37.1 overs. Only 52 runs came in this crucial period of 13 overs and importantly three big wickets of Yusuf, Kohli and Rohit went down.Sometimes disciplined bowling is enough. It was Randiv who did all the damage, not with anything spectacular but with his steady supply of loopy offbreaks. He beat Yusuf in flight and lured him to hole out to long-on and did Rohit in with a big-spinning off break that breached the defences. In between, Kohli, who had until then crafted a responsible innings, had lifted Thushara straight to long-off. And when Raina fell to a stunning catch – Chamara Kapugedera flung himself to his left at short extra cover- off Dilshan’s bowling, India were wobbling at 204 for 6 but were saved by Ashwin’s cameo.Sometimes the catalyst comes from the least expected quarter; Ashwin pulled off a gem in the end overs to push India from 204 for 6 in 41.1 overs to a respectable total. Ashwin pinged wide long-on for a six and a four against Mendis in the 47th over and lifted Nuwan Kulasekara for successive fours in the 48th, with a paddle-swept boundary being the highlight. However, Sri Lanka struck in the last couple of overs, via Thilan Thushara, to prevent India from reaching a big score. It was the pattern of the day – India kept threatening to get ahead, and Sri Lanka kept pulling them back till India caved in under the relentless pressure.

The Lowdown: Clark’s indiscipline

The Irishman has come under the spotlight recently due to his indiscipline, as footage shared last month showed him punching an opponent in a friendly against Al-Ittihad, which resulted in him being sent off.

This comes after he was given a red card just nine minutes into their 1-1 draw at home to Norwich City in the Premier League in November, and with the signing of Dan Burn from Brighton on Transfer Deadline Day, the 32-year-old’s future at St James’ Park will have to be questioned.

Speaking to Football Insider, Robinson – who regularly appears on Sky Sports – has now claimed that Clark may have even played his last game for Newcastle, saying:

“You don’t get sent off in a friendly game in front of your new owners when you’re on a training camp.

“He has played in quite a few games this season. If the manager sees him as surplus to requirements I’m surprised we didn’t see him move on before the deadline.

“Given his recent disciplinary record, this could be the end for him at Newcastle.”

The Verdict: Get rid

Following the arrival of Burn on Tyneside, Newcastle can now afford to get Clark off of their books.

The Republic of Ireland international is currently ranked as the fifth-worst player in the top flight at the moment, and the worst out of his teammates (WhoScored), so he would not be a big loss should the Magpies decide to get rid.

Nonetheless, he should at least be frozen out by Eddie Howe for his indiscipline until such time that a suitable buyer comes in for him.

O presidente do Conselho Deliberativo do Vasco, Luis Manuel Fernandes, em entrevista coletiva nesta segunda-feira, marcou para o dia 19 de janeiro a reunião dos conselheiros que vai definir o presidente do clube para o triênio 2018-2021, que será realizada na sede do Cruz-Maltino na Lagoa, na zona sul do Rio de Janeiro. A primeira convocação será às 20h, e a segunda às 20h30.Além do novo mandatário e diretoria administrativa, também vão ser eleitos os presidentes dos conselhos Deliberativo e Fiscal.

Com a decisão da Justiça de anular a urna 7, a chapa vencedora da eleição entre os sócios ano passado é ‘Sempre Vasco Livre’, de Julio Brant. Se nada mudar nos tribunais, ela vai poder indicar 120 conselheiros, enquanto a ‘Reconstruindo o Vasco’, de Eurico Miranda, que ainda tenta reverter a anulação no STJ, vai indicar 30 nomes. Esses 150 novos conselheiros se juntam a mais 150 natos e elegem os poderes do clube.

Porém, o processo eleitoral do Vasco está com uma lacuna. Isso porque o mandato de Eurico Miranda e dos outros poderes do clube terminam nesta terça-feira, e fica a dúvida como fica a situação até a posse da diretoria que será eleita, na próxima semana. O presidente do Conselho Deliberativo não soube responder essas questão.

-Há uma lacuna no estatuto, ele separa a semana da realização do Conselho que vai eleger a diretoria administrativa e a posse da diretoria só poderia ser na segunda semana.Eu prefiro não opinar. Ele (David Nascimento, do L!) me respondeu que já tinha falado com o presidente da Assembleia Geral, que indicou um outro artigo do estatuto, o artigo 76, que diz que o Conselho Deliberativo será convocado pelo seu presidente na segunda quinzena de janeiro e de três em três anos, na primeira semana da segunda quinzena do mês de janeiro para eleger, entre os seus membros, a mesa do seu conselho. Evidentemente há um certo conflito, porque, como posso convocar um conselho que eu não preciso? Essa era a minha interpretação do estatuto. Eu fui no Vasco para resolver isso, e ainda havia divergências de interpretação do estatuto. O que importa é que essa reunião seja convocada dentro desse período. Eu revi o estatuto e decidi convocar a reunião, respeitando o prazo – completou.

Denúncia de ataques e crítica a Julio Brant

O presidente do Conselho Deliberativo do Vasco disse que recebeu muitos xingamentos e ameaças enquanto não marcava a data da reunião dos conselheiros. Inclusive, ele chegou atrasado na coletiva desta segunda porque estava na delegacia prestando queixa contra os ataques. Luis Manuel Fernandes considera Julio Brant como ‘politicamente responsável por esses ataques’.

-Meus meios de comunicação passaram a ser inundados por xingamentos e ameaças. Coisa que eu nunca passei na minha vida. De onde surgiram essas mensagens? Até 13h45 de sexta-feira eu nunca tinha recebido mensagens desse tipo. Soube depois que o candidato Julio Brant havia dado uma coletiva entre 12h30. Na entrevista, ele afirma que o dirigente responsável não sabe que é responsável. Depois diz que o dirigente quer criar o caos, prolongar a convocação da reunião do conselho para criar um distúrbio. Tentativa de criar o caos. Em uma hora, ele vira a câmera e pede para se mobilizarem. Foram criados diversos grupos, me incluindo à revelia e me expondo a ataques e ameaças. Eu saía, e me botavam de volta. Uma lógica de intimidação.Eu considero o senhor Julio Brant politicamente responsável por esses ataques que estou sofrendo- disse Luis Manuel Fernandes, destacando também que Brant cometeu uma violência ao estatuto do Vasco ao dizer que já era presidente.

-Ele afirma estar cometendo uma violência contra o estatuto do Vasco: ‘O resultado provisório me indica como presidente, eu sou presidencialista, logo estou assumindo a cadeira’. Ele não foi eleito. E é disso que essa coletiva aqui se trata. Da convocação da eleição. O fato é que aquele ato foi uma afronta ao Conselho Deliberativo do clube. Uma afronta aos poderes constituídos do clube. E teve como consequência essa enxurrada de ameaças e agressões – completou.

Leeds United have been linked with a summer move for Middlesbrough centre-back Dael Fry, with numerous Premier League clubs interested in the 24-year-old as they look to tighten their defence.

What’s the story?

According to Football League World, the defender is subject to interest from Leeds, as well as Premier League rivals Wolves, West Ham, Southampton, Burnley, Brighton and Brentford.

It has also been suggested that Boro are holding out for more than £20m for his services, but that would only be if the club are to miss out on promotion.

Chris Wilder has revitalised the Teesside club since his appointment in early November, with Middlesbrough currently sixth in the Championship with a game in hand on seventh-placed Nottingham Forest and two games on Huddersfield Town in fifth, with Fry making 21 league appearances so far this term.

Leeds must sign Fry

It’s fair to say that Leeds are experiencing a case of ‘second season syndrome’ after their stellar reintroduction to the top flight last term, when they finished ninth in the Premier League.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side are currently 15th in the table and are still looking to distance themselves from the prospect of a nervy end to the season.

The Whites were notorious for shipping goals last term, conceding 54 times (1.42 per game), but their attack was frightening at times. The Yorkshire outfit scored 62 goals (1.63), which gave them a buffer for getting caught out at the back.

However, Leeds are yet to find that balance between attack and defence this season, conceding 46 goals (two per game) and scoring just 27 (1.17 per game), so investment in the defence is vital.

In Fry, Bielsa could find a decent solution. Despite not boasting any top-flight experience, the 24-year-old has made 160 appearances for Boro since coming through the youth ranks.

Moreover, the 24-year-old was instrumental in Middlesbrough’s triumph over Manchester United in the FA Cup recently, securing victory on penalties after a 1-1 draw as the defender played the whole 120 minutes of normal and extra time.

Wilder’s defence is also one of the best in the Championship, conceding just 29 goals in 30 games, with only Fulham, Bournemouth and West Brom having better records at the back.

The ex-Sheffield United boss is also a big fan of the defender, with the 54-year-old labelling Fry as “outstanding” after his return from injury in a 0-0 draw against Stoke earlier this season.

Leeds centre-back Robin Koch has been particularly underwhelming this term and, despite playing in the division below, Fry trumps the German in most aspects of his game.

According to SofaScore, the 24-year-old has kept seven clean sheets so far this term whilst also averaging 0.9 tackles, 0.6 interceptions and three clearances per game, being dribbled past just 0.3 times per match.

Contrastingly, Koch is yet to secure a clean sheet, has been dribbled past once per game and makes 0.7 tackles per match. However, the German boasts slightly better statistics in interceptions and clearances, with 1.1 and 3.3 per game respectively.

Although £20m is a steep fee for a defender valued at £5.4m by Transfermarkt and with no Premier League experience, at 24 there is still plenty of potential in Fry.

Furthermore, Leeds will have to make some sort of investment in their defence during the summer if they are to improve in that regard. They’ll just hope that it hasn’t cost them their top-flight status in the meantime, and Bielsa would surely love to bring in someone like Fry who would likely improve them in that regard, as evidenced above.

Maratona na antiga casa

Após o jogo contra a Ponte Preta, o Corinthians voltará atuar no Pacaembu no domingo. Isso porque o São Caetano mandará a partida pela segunda rodada do Paulistão no estádio Municial.

Na sequência, o Timão receberá a Ferroviária, dia 24 de janeiro, e São Paulo, dia 28, no Pacaembu. Depois, Corinthians tem dois jogos fora de casa, contra Novorizontino e Santo André, mas volta a ser mandante contra o São Bento, em 14 de fevereiro, quando a Arena já deverá estar disponível.
