Is it worth the financial risk at West Ham?

On Saturday afternoon, Andy Carroll embarked on his new East London adventure with a performance that drew both a smile and a tear from Sam Allardyce. Having escaped the intrinsic triangles of Brendan Rodgers’ ‘tiki-taka’ regime, the pony-tailed assassin fled down route one to Upton Park where he tormented the Fulham rearguard with his aerial prowess and impressive link-up play. However, despite being hailed as the vital component in Big Sam’s master plan, is the former Geordie talisman worth jeopardising the club’s financial well-being?

Just a fortnight ago, in the wake of West Ham’s first failed attempt to secure the services of Carroll, co-owner David Sullivan revealed the worrying implications of a potential move.

It was a terribly expensive deal with the loan fee and with his wages, which were enormous – too much for a club like ours.

Then there was a huge transfer fee which would have blown our budget for several years.” (Daily Mail)

Is this a wise move for a football club in today’s unstable economic climate, especially one that is still recovering from the debts accumulated since their previous departure from the Premier League? It was only 15 months ago that Sullivan admitted, “this club is in a worse financial position than any other in the country”. (Guardian)

If nothing else this transfer highlights the extreme measures employed by clubs as they desperately seek to avoid relegation. With the ever-increasing financial rewards from sponsors and broadcasting deals, maintaining status in the Premier League is becoming an achieve-at-all-costs philosophy. However, significant investment in player acquisitions doesn’t immediately equal success, as highlighted by the contrasting fortunes of QPR and Swansea last season.

There is no questioning that Carroll’s debut in the claret-and-blue was a revelation, not just for the player but also for the team as whole. He played a key role in each of the goals and was perhaps only denied a place on the score sheet himself thanks to an injury picked up in the 68th minute. David Gold announced on Twitter that he thought Carroll would be sidelined for three weeks but reports today suggest he will be on the treatment table for between five and six weeks, which is a huge blow for both club and country.

Throughout this period West Ham will continue to subsidise his wage packet, which is believed to total a six-figure sum. Should the team revert to their previous uninspiring performances in his absence then the pressure will once again fall on his young shoulders to revive a club’s ailing fortunes. It’s hardly an ideal situation for a man who’s spent the last 18 months trying to satisfy the expectations of The Kop.

Let’s presume Carroll returns from injury and fires The Hammers to safety, even if he plays a small part the owners will feel compelled to sign him. They may even have to tie up a deal before January as rumours continue to circulate that Liverpool will attempt to recall him at the earliest opportunity. The club is then faced with a huge financial burden and will be unable to strengthen the squad in other areas unless a number of individuals are shown the door. As I gaze at the current squad I fear there isn’t a single name that would generate even half of the amount needed to purchase Carroll on a permanent deal.

Life in the top-flight is worth a reported 40 million pounds in additional revenue (Deloitte LLP), but the minimum guaranteed payments in the following four seasons – if they drop down – is 48 million. So even if West Ham were to suffer the heartbreak of relegation, the continued financial income coupled with the number of experienced Championship members of their squad should see them bounce straight back up. Portsmouth proved that spending beyond your means can bring you short-term success, but I think the supporters would gladly hand back their FA Cup trophy in order to bring stability and hope back to the current League One dwellers.

West Ham’s chances of survival have been boosted by the arrival of Carroll but they’re playing a very dangerous game if they depend solely on his ability to score goals. Afonso Alves was meant to lead Middlesborough to the promised land and look what happened there.

Key United defender expected to return against Tottenham

Sir Alex Ferguson believes Nemanja Vidic will return to the Manchester United side against Tottenham next Saturday, reports The Daily Mail.

Jonny Evans started alongside Rio Ferdinand in the Serbian’s absence, as United secured a scrappy 2-1 win over fierce rivals Liverpool yesterday.

Vidic has only recently come back to the fold following eight-months out due to a damaged anterior cruciate ligament, suffered in the Champions League defeat to Basel in December 2011.

The 30-year-old admitted his knee was not in the best condition, so Ferguson decided not to risk the player at Anfield.

“He was just feeling a bit tight round about his knee and we decided just to give him a break today. Hopefully he’ll be alright next week,” said Ferguson.

The injury would have been a cause for concern to United fans, especially as the side’s defensive frailties last season were evident to see without Vidic – which was one of the main factors which saw the trophy go to the other side of Manchester.

The club captain is expected to be rested for the Capital One Cup tie against Newcastle on Wednesday but will return for the match this weekend with Spurs.

Arsenal make loss on striker

Arsenal FC chiefs have written off £5.5 million in their accounts to cover the wages of Park Chu Young after the striker failed to make the grade.

The South Korean flop joined Arsenal from Monaco on deadline day in the summer of 2011, but has barely been featured in the Premier League or first team.

The transfer is not one of Arsene Wenger’s key signings at the club, although he first described the striker as a “valuable addition” who would bring “true quality to the squad.” The striker did not live up to his billed reputation, however, only scoring one goal in six appearances.

After spending a season long loan last season at Celta Vigo, the South Korean is now in search of a new club, as the Emirates club have put a £5.5 million ‘impairment fee’ into their recently published accounts.

Despite reducing Arsenal’s profits last financial year, during the last 12 months leading to 31st May, the club have still made an extra £36.6 million, which will give them extra leeway in regards to the financial fair play rules.

Despite taking the loss on Young, Arsenal are still understood to be in a strong financial position, and could acquire two marquee signings in January.

It is thought that Wenger could buy 2 players worth £25 million each and give them six figure contracts if he wished, come the opening of the next transfer window.

Reading skipper takes positives from defeat

Reading captain Jobi McAnuff says he has taken some positives out of the Royals’ 1-0 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield last weekend.

The winger was pleased with his team’s second half performance, but admits that the Royals need to play well for 90 minutes to get results.

Reading are yet to record a win in the Premier League, and were put to the sword on Saturday with a single goal from Liverpool’s talented youngster Raheem Sterling after 29 minutes. McAnuff, 30, believes the defeat can be put down to their poor first half performance.

“In the first half we weren’t anywhere where we needed to be to get a result in this league,” admitted the Reading skipper.

“We didn’t really pose any problems and we made it too easy for them.

“We came out in the second half and gave it a really good go. We were a lot more like our usual selves – but we can’t just expect to turn up for 45 minutes and get a win, especially at Anfield.”

The Jamaican international is searching for his first Premier League goal and came close with a long-range effort that was parried away by Liverpool keeper Brad Jones.

“He [Jones] made some decent saves today and it just wasn’t meant to be – but I’ll keep plugging away!

“We feel we’re good enough to get results in this league – in patches we’ve shown that. It’s all about putting it together now,” he added.

Reading face Fulham this weekend at the Madejski Stadium and will be determined to get their first Premier League win.

O’Neill proud of Northern Ireland draw

Northern Ireland have returned from Portugal with a favourable result, after the home nation drew 1-1 with the Iberian side on Tuesday night.

Niall McGinn put the visitors into a shock lead in the first-half, and dogged defending kept the away team in the lead until 79 minutes, when Helder Postiga tied things up for the hosts.

Northern Ireland manager Michael O’Neill was proud of his players after the game, and felt that it was as good a display as he has seen in his tenure with the nation.

“It’s up there. This is as difficult a place to come, certainly in Europe, against a world class team,” he told Sky Sports.

“All credit goes to the players. They were magnificent. Their work rate, desire, the way they worked for each other – you cannot ask for more than that.

“It was very harsh to lose a goal at the end. Of course, we had to weather severe pressure but at times I thought we passed the ball well, scored a fantastic goal and we’re coming out disappointed with a draw.

“The shape of the team was excellent, the work rate, the way they went about the game, was fantastic.

“To go ahead and stifle Portugal was fantastic. I’m disappointed for the players because they deserved a wee bit more than a draw from the game.

“They have to take confidence and belief from what they did tonight. Their togetherness and spirit has been unquestionable. At times it has been questioned, but certainly tonight they answered that.

“There is more in this team, because we were down a few bodies.

“We’ve got younger players coming into the team all the time. If they can continue to improve and grow and obviously have more performances like tonight, then if you have that spirit you will always get something in football,” he concluded.

Newcastle starlet believes fringe players can shine

Sammy Ameobi says that Newcastle’s fringe players have been given a chance to show what they can do under Alan Pardew’s reign.

The youngster played for the Magpies in the Premier League at the weekend, and it was his shot, deflected in by Papiss Cisse, which secured the win for Newcastle over West Brom.

Ameobi believes that with Newcastle taking part in three different competitions and with few new signings, that it is a big campaign for the younger generation of players at the club.

“This is our chance to come out and show that we can do it. I fully intend to show that I can do it and am capable of it. This is a massive season for me,” he said.

“There’s going to be a lot of opportunities because we’re in the Europa League still and the FA Cup as well so the chance is there for fringe players like me.

“The chance is there for us to show what we’re made of. We’ll see, hopefully.”

Ameobi also believes that he can create chances and take opportunities for the good of the team.

“The main thing for me is that when I come on I try to affect the game. I have to be prepared when I come on to make the most of those opportunities and take the chances.

“I feel like I’ve managed to do that in the last two games. Hopefully I can continue to build on that and continue to do it in the future. I’m glad the manager is looking to me.

“I’m a very creative player and on my day I think I can bring something to the team. I always look to get down that line and put some balls into the box, and hopefully I can continue to create a few of those chances,” he added.

Ameobi came up through the Newcastle United Academy and his début for the first team came in 2011.

Manchester United Ace Considers China Move

Rio Ferdinand has revealed to close friends that he would be open to a shock move to China, after his 10 year career with Manchester United looks set to end this summer, according to reports in The Daily Mail.

With clubs in the Far East willing to offer the England star as much as £130,000-a-week, it is thought that Ferdinand may follow former Premier League compatriots Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka by plying his trade in China.

Reports earlier this month suggested that Ferdinand’s national team mate Frank Lampard is in talks with Chinese club Guizhou Renhe. A move such as this would open the floodgates and may see other elder statesman of the Premier League take the plunge by spending their twilight years in a financially beneficial, far off land.

Talking to Inside United about his future, Ferdinand stated, “The best thing I can do is to look at it at Christmas, and then again in the summer, to see how I’m feeling and go from there.”

I’ll have a better idea of that in December or January time, when the games start coming thick and fast. That is when it really hits you and you know the hard work really has to start.”

Fergie: We need to improve for Derby Day

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has insisted that it is crucial his side improves for their upcoming Premier League clash against rivals Manchester City.

The game which takes place on Sunday at the Etihad Stadium is a chance for Man United to gain a six point advantage over their nearest rivals City.

This could prove pivotal lead into the Christmas schedule and Sir Alex was keen to stress how vital it was that his team improved their performances levels.

United lost 1-0 in their last fixture at the Etihad in what was then a crucial title decider to a Vincent Kompany header and Fergie insists he wants no similar lapses of concentration this time round.

Even though it is still early on in the season Ferguson insists that it would be a huge boost to get a result on Sunday and if they are to achieve this they need to shore up their defence.

He spoke to BBC sport  about the 32 goals let in by United in all competitions this season, and Ferguson conceded: “It’s a worry.

He went on to add “If we perform like that on Sunday then God knows what’s going to happen to us.”

Martin Atkinson has been placed in charge of this Sunday’s game and Ferguson may be slightly more wary of his post-match comments about this referee after the match.

Fergie was handed an initial five match day touchline ban and a £30,000 fine by the FA last year following his comments about Atkinson when his side lost 2-1 at Stamford Bridge to Chelsea last season.

Roberto Mancini Wants Barcelona ace

Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini is hoping to bring Barcelona forward David Villa to the Etihad Stadium in January according to the Daily Star.

Villa has been unable to break back into the Barcelona side since returning from long term injury and it seems a number of clubs are interested in signing the former Valencia striker.

Chelsea and Swansea are both keen on a January move as well as a host of other European clubs but Barcelona are yet to decide if they want to sell the 31-year-old or simply loan him out for six months.

Spain’s record goalscorer formed a superb partnership with David Silva while the pair were at Valencia and with current strikers Carlos Tevez, Sergio Aguero and Edin Dzeko struggling for form, the deal could be a season changer for Mancini.

Villa’s arrival could see the end of Mario Balotelli’s time in Manchester with AC Milan the likely destination for the controversial Italian.

Arsene Wenger wants Walcott to repay faith

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger hopes that Theo Walcott’s extended run at centre-forward will persuade him to renew his contract with the club, according to reports from The Mirror.

The England international is yet to pen a new deal with the Gunners, which has alerted the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool.

Walcott has openly stated that he sees his future as a centre-forward, a position that he has failed to hold down in North London.

However, Wenger has utilised the 23-year-old in his preferred role in recent weeks, with positive results.

He netted a hat-trick against Newcastle over the weekend and has looked sharp in his other outings as the focal point of the attack.

The club believe that his extended run in the position may persuade him to pen a new £75,000-per-week deal, despite rumours that he is holding out for a greater wage.

Walcott, who is set to lead the line against Southampton this week, believes that a conclusion will be reached soon:

“I will just continue to play my football, talks are ongoing. I’ve answered this question on numerous times and I’m sure something will be arranged soon.

“I’ve always said I’m a striker and the manager is giving me the opportunity to play up front. I’m not saying I’ll play up front all the time, but it’s just nice to have a different option.

“We are scoring goals from every position and I believe I am a striker.”
